The Beacon of New Bethel Baptist Church November 2018 XXXVIII Issue #3 A Season of ThankfulnessWhere has the time gone? Its already November! The leaves are turning, the weather is changing, and all the stores are already gearing up for Christmas. Another year is quickly coming to a close, and before we know it, 2019 will be knocking on our door to come in. Most of us know the story of Thanksgiving. The pilgrim settlers of Massachusetts, entering into their second winter, received a trading vessel that supplied them with many needs. One of the items they traded for was grain. This grain helped them the next summer to grow crops that would sustain them long term. The Governor at the time, William Bradford decreed that a day be set aside that next Decem- ber to be a day of feasting and prayer for all the colonists to show their gratitude to God for what He had done to keep them alive. This gratitude was also shown to the local friendly Indians who provided land and food for their feast. Along with the native people, the pilgrims celebrated a day of thankfulness. Over the years this day has changed many times and found a resting place on the fourth Thursday of each November. From a Scriptural standpoint, we find the concept of thanksgiving throughout. The Israelites sang a song of Thanksgiving when they were delivered from Pharaohs army (Exodus 15). The Mosaic law set aside times of thanksgiving through various feasts, and the book of Psalms is full of thanksgiving to God for His great mercy and power. Giving thanks to God can be found from cover to cover. The New Testament also tells us, Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (1 Thess. 5:16-18). Paul writes, Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God(Phil. 4:6), and Therefore, I exhort first of all that supplication, prayers, intercessions, and giving thanks be made for all men” (1 Tim. 2:1). As followers of Christ, we are to perpetually live in a state of prayer and thanksgiving to God for eve- rything He has done for us. We should be thankful for our lives, thankful for our ability to work, thankful for our families, and a host of others things. But, primarily, we should be thankful for His greatest gift of all, Je- sus Christ the Son of God. We, like Paul, should always say, Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!” (2 Cor. 9:15). It is through this gift of Jesus Christ, by His death, burial, and resurrection that eternal life with God comes for all who will repent and believe in Him. This is the greatest source of all thankfulness. Much like the pilgrims, almost 400 years ago, when times are difficult and our circumstances seem dim, we should exhibit an attitude of gratitude for everything God has given to us. It is quite easy to move through life, and even the festivities of Thanksgiving, without a thought of giving thanks to God. Let this not be said of us. While we are busy preparing and feasting this November, let us never forget to give thanks to the One whom we owe everything. God is truly good and every good gift comes from Him. May we truly be thankful this Thanksgiving season and may God look upon us as His grateful children. With all thankfulness to God, Pastor Chad Brannan Source: Gotquestions.org Key Word: Thanksgiving

XXXVIII Issue #3

“A Season of Thankfulness”

Where has the time gone? It’s already November! The leaves are turning, the weather is

changing, and all the stores are already gearing up for Christmas. Another year is quickly

coming to a close, and before we know it, 2019 will be knocking on our door to come in.

Most of us know the story of Thanksgiving. The pilgrim settlers of Massachusetts, entering

into their second winter, received a trading vessel that supplied them with many needs. One of

the items they traded for was grain. This grain helped them the next summer to grow crops that would sustain

them long term. The Governor at the time, William Bradford decreed that a day be set aside that next Decem-

ber to be a day of feasting and prayer for all the colonists to show their gratitude to God for what He had done

to keep them alive. This gratitude was also shown to the local friendly Indians who provided land and food for

their feast. Along with the native people, the pilgrims celebrated a day of thankfulness. Over the years this day

has changed many times and found a resting place on the fourth Thursday of each November.

From a Scriptural standpoint, we find the concept of thanksgiving throughout. The Israelites sang a

song of Thanksgiving when they were delivered from Pharaoh’s army (Exodus 15). The Mosaic law set aside

times of thanksgiving through various feasts, and the book of Psalms is full of thanksgiving to God for His

great mercy and power. Giving thanks to God can be found from cover to cover.

The New Testament also tells us, “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (1 Thess. 5:16-18). Paul writes, “Be anxious for nothing, but in

everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God” (Phil. 4:6), and “Therefore, I exhort first of all that supplication, prayers, intercessions, and giving thanks be made for all men” (1 Tim. 2:1).

As followers of Christ, we are to perpetually live in a state of prayer and thanksgiving to God for eve-

rything He has done for us. We should be thankful for our lives, thankful for our ability to work, thankful for

our families, and a host of others things. But, primarily, we should be thankful for His greatest gift of all, Je-

sus Christ the Son of God. We, like Paul, should always say, “Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!” (2

Cor. 9:15). It is through this gift of Jesus Christ, by His death, burial, and resurrection that eternal life with

God comes for all who will repent and believe in Him. This is the greatest source of all thankfulness.

Much like the pilgrims, almost 400 years ago, when times are difficult and our circumstances seem

dim, we should exhibit an attitude of gratitude for everything God has given to us. It is quite easy to move

through life, and even the festivities of Thanksgiving, without a thought of giving thanks to God. Let this not

be said of us. While we are busy preparing and feasting this November, let us never forget to give thanks to

the One whom we owe everything. God is truly good and every good gift comes from Him. May we truly be

thankful this Thanksgiving season and may God look upon us as His grateful children.

With all thankfulness to God,

Pastor Chad Brannan

Greeting Ministry

We are in need of additional individuals to serve on the Greeting Ministry. Greeters serve on a rotation to welcome vis-

letins, Greeters can help direct visitors to a Sunday School class. If you are interested in serving as a Greeter, please

contact Carrie Brannan. ([email protected])

The Bible says, in 2 Corinthians 9:7, “God loves a cheerful giver.” As a reminder for all, we have online giv-ing here at New Bethel. You may access this way to give to the ministries of the church through our church website at nbbcky.com.
