Rise Against Hunger
Dear Chip,
It is with great pleasure that we announce the
destination of the Rise Against Hunger meals
your church helped package on May 4, 2019. A
shipping container holding 285,120 meals has
been sent to Nicaragua for our partner
ORPHANetwork. If you happen to receive more
than one of these announcements, your meals
have gone to impact multiple partners.
ORPHANetwork is an organization that
nourishes lives through food assistance and other
services in Nicaragua. To learn more, please visit
our partner/country spotlight on the Impact Stories
tab and click and drag on our World Aid Map at:
https://www.riseagainsthunger.org/world-aid/
Ending hunger is only possible if we continue
to grow the movement. We encourage you to
share the news about this shipment. Since 2005,
volunteers like you have helped us distribute over
455 million meals worldwide. We can end
hunger by 2030, but we can't do it without you.
Please visit our website:
www.riseagainsthunger.org
Consider making a donation, planning a meal
packaging event at your place of worship, school,
company, civic club, etc., joining our advocacy
efforts, or inviting us to speak to a group.

Summer praises You, God: Birds sing,
trees clap their hands, the sun beams,
rain showers announce Your goodness –
and we join in. Hallelujah!

Fellowship Meal Wednesday, August 21 at 6pm
No one has signed up to host this popular
community meal this month. If you or your
committee/group would like to host, please let
Lavonda or Roberta know.
Fish Fry at Bethlehem Church Saturday, August 3, 11am-4pm
Our friends and neighbors at Bethlehem
A.M.E. Zion Church are hosting a FREE Fish
Fry August 3, from 11am-4pm. We all know how
wonderful their famous fish dinners are! They’ll
be sharing them at the Brookstown Festival
again this year, so be sure to go this Saturday,
August 3, for a preview of their delicious
signature dish.
This is a generous invitation to the community
to join together for good food and fellowship.
See you there!
Dinner Church: Extending God’s Hospitality and Welcome!
Genesis 18:1-8
The Lord appeared to Abraham by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat at the entrance of his tent in the
heat of the day. He looked up and saw three men standing near him. When he saw them, he ran from
the tent entrance to meet them, and bowed down to the ground. He said, “My lord, if I find favor with
you, do not pass by your servant. Let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves
under the tree. Let me bring a little bread, that you may refresh yourselves, and after that you may pass
on—since you have come to your servant.” So they said, “Do as you have said.” And Abraham
hastened into the tent to Sarah, and said, “Make ready quickly three measures of choice flour, knead it,
and make cakes.” Abraham ran to the herd, and took a calf, tender and good, and gave it to the
servant, who hastened to prepare it. Then he took curds and milk and the calf that he had prepared,
and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree while they ate.
The Dinner Church movement is a component of “Fresh Expressions” of the Holy Spirit in the
church. It is for some a new thing, but many of us are reminded that it is really a very old form of
hospitality, welcome and redemptive community. The earliest Christian expressions of gathering were
around a common meal, the lovefeast or agape. Jesus’ practice of eating with others, providing food
and wine for others, celebrating religious meals with his followers, and encouraging eating during the
most expansive and inconvenient teaching times reveals the sacred nature of receiving from God our
daily bread. Jesus’ teaching includes many references to celebratory meals to which others, all others,
are invited to the table. One of our most significant sacraments is based on Jesus’ words to his
disciples during the Last Supper. The Last Supper was itself a commemoration of the most significant
event in the life of the Hebrew people, an ordinance of God, the observance of which is to be in
perpetuity - The Passover.
Each Sunday, we are reminded that we are greeters on God’s behalf. The Welcome is God’s and it
is to all. No discrimination can be exercised as we extend hospitality and welcome! When Abraham
saw the men nearing, he ran to meet them, and invited them to receive refreshment. For Abraham,
hospitality was an obligation of his faith, as it is for us.
In the Dinner Church, we literally run out from our entrance to meet others as they approach, and
extend to them a welcome and hospitality that represents, not our household, but God’s
household. The provisions come to us from God, through the Church. ~ Pastor Chip
These summer days, Shepherd Lord,
You lead us amid green grasses and peaceful
waters to restore our souls. Thank You for
Your goodness and mercy!
As summer rains fall from heaven, ripening
grass, flowers and crops, so God’s Word comes
down from heaven, producing abundant
harvests in our lives.
(Based on Isaiah 55:10-11)
“There shall be eternal summer
in the grateful heart.”

THE BUMC “BARN QUILT EVENT”
To any and all who are interested, please mark your calendars!
On Saturday, August 17th, the instructor Ms. Anita, will be in Brookstown’s Fellowship Hall for the
Barn Quilt painting event. If we get 15 participants we (BUMC) can get one for free.
The Fall Festival Committee would like to use it in the Silent Auction this year. So participating will
not only be of benefit to yourself, it will also benefit our Church! How neat is that?
The plan is to start the class 8:30-9:00am and run until finished 2-4 hours later.
Each participant will go home with their own completed Barn Quilt. Prices vary upon size and are
reasonable. Paints and colors are designed not to fade from the outside elements.
The size and pattern need to be selected no later than August 3rd; see Roberta or Noreen for details.
Ms. Anita transfers your selected quilt pattern onto the board, and you fill in the paint in colors you
desire. There is a technique and Ms. Anita leads in the painting process.
If you would like lunch, you may bring your own,
or pay for a sandwich meal;
see Noreen for lunch orders.
Don’t miss out on a fun-filled event!
This class will fill up fast so be swift!

United Methodist Women August 13 at 5:30pm
The ladies of Brookstown will resume their
monthly meetings August 13, after taking the
past two months off for the summer. Meetings
will be held at 5:30pm at The Sherwood

Center. You can get coupons from “Talk of the
Town” mailing and online. All ladies are
welcome and encouraged to attend!
Our entertainment schedule for this year’s festival features a variety of activities.
There will be something for everyone!
10:30am ~ Triple Threat Line Dancers This is a group of energetic and entertaining seniors who are indeed a triple threat
because they are “retired, inspired, and desired!” Their purpose is to entertain some, and
encourage others, to learn line dancing as a way to improve health and fitness. Currently,
they entertain dementia and Alzheimer’s seniors at the Ted Williams Senior Services
Center the first Wednesday of every month, and the residents at the Trinity Glen
Retirement Center every quarter.
If you are interested in joining Triple Threat, their classes meet every Wednesday from
2:30 – 4:30 at the Rupert Bell Recreation Center in Winston-Salem for hours of endless
fun and good health.
Early on, they were happy to just meet one day a week, but their enthusiasm for line
dancing has extended beyond that. Now these senior line dancers are available to
entertain groups at parties, reunions, picnics, street festivals, and charity events, offering
an intriguing glimpse into the many styles of urban line dancing.
12:00pm ~ Billy Myers, Gospel singer Billy Myers has had a love of singing for the Lord since he was a young boy, and has
been a member of southern gospel quartets most of his adult life. As a member of New
Vision Baptist Worship Center in Clemmons, he was led to begin a solo career to spread
the Word of God. In 2009, Billy began traveling North Carolina, singing for Jesus and
giving his testimony.
Being a cancer survivor since 2008, Billy loves to tell of how Jesus healed him and
brought him through cancer. While traveling to share his testimony and singing, he had the
opportunity to become part of Carolina Cancer Services. He does what he can for the
people he comes in contact with who are affected by cancer, often holding fundraiser
singings for families. The goal of Billy Myers Ministries is to be “One Man, One Heart, One
Soul - Serving One Lord” and to spread the love and hope of Jesus Christ. You can find
him on FaceBook.
1:00pm ~ Amie Harris & Tal Crews, Vocal Duo This brother/sister duo will present a performance of pure harmonies, soulful dynamics,
and easy listening music.
Amie Harris was born with a purity of voice that will inspire the darkest of minds, sooth
the roughest soul, and soften the hardest of hearts. She is inspired now, more than ever, to
allow her gifts to be the healing force for her own life, and to be used as a conduit of
alignment with her higher power.
Tal Crews, brother of Amie, has been immersed in music since childhood. He grew up
singing and playing in church with his family. Growing up with a very musically talented
family, his interest in composition was swiftly sparked, allowing numerous works of divine
inspiration to flow.

This Side of Heaven
A little girl who’d grown up in the city spent some of her summer vacation out in the
country. One starlit night, she and her dad stood gazing up into the sky without any harsh
streetlights obstructing the view. The girl, amazed by the sparkling view, exclaimed, “If
heaven is so pretty on the wrong side, I wonder what it looks like on the right side!”
“Love is a fruit in season at all times, and within reach of every hand.”
