One advantage of making ceramic/potteryjewellery is that special materials arenot required. Clay is one of the mostversatile ofmaterlals, and is easy to workwith. A fine-grained clay is a better choicesince the shapes made will be small.Decide which is preferable; earthenwareor stoneware clay. These are availablethrough most ceramic supply shops. If theindividual jewellery shapes are quite fragileand intricate, it would be best to bisque firethem to avoid breakage during glazing andhandling, otherwise there is not much needfor extra firing.Glazing is best done by dipping. It would be tootedious to try to apply the glaze by brush, and almostimpossible to spray it on. The pieces are picked upbetween the thumb and forefinger and "dunked" inthe glaze for seconds only. This is enough to give asmooth, even coating. The glaze will dry immediatelyon the bisque or dry green piece. The spots left bythe fingers can easily be touched up by dabbing ona touch of glaze with a finger or brush. A toothpickor skewer can be used, depending on the size of thehole, to "dunk" the piece into the glaze for a fewseconds. Clean the holes so they will not fill upduring the firing process, or they will close over.Since pieces are small, and are glazed on all sides, itis awkward to stilt them without leaving blemishes. The easiest way is to string the beads. or pieces withholes, on a nichrome wire, (through their holes). andfire them in this manner. In this way none of the edgestouch so there will be no stilt marks.Pieces that will have findings glued onto them later, should be left with unglazed areas on the backs sothat the glue will mend better with the piece. These can be fired on small buttons of dry day, thebuttons sitting under the unglazed area of the piece. The examples below are just a rough idea of what canbe done in the area of bead and pendant making. Ifyou do not have a kiln, most ceramic/pottery shopsdo give a firing service and charge accordingly.

Step 3Picture 3 shows the beads that have dried naturallyand picture 4 is of the beads that have been driedthen bisqued. They can then be scoured with apiece of fine sandpaper, steelwool or even a spongescourer. This can be done after the bead is dried butat this stage the bead is very fragile and can break.Alternatively the bead can be scoured after it hasbeen bisqued. The sandpaper removes all the marksand blemishes on the bead leaving it with a smoothersurface which gives a better finish.

Step 4A stick can be used to dip the bead into the glaze.Once out of the glaze. clean the other side of thehole to ensure that no glaze has gone in it or thehole will close up. Do not dip in the glaze for longerthan 3 to 4 SECONDS or the glaze will get toothick and run off the bead. Ensure the glaze is eitherearthenware or stoneware glaze. appropriate for theclay being used, as each of these fires to differenttemperatures in the kiln.Beads are dipped in the glaze a quarter of the wayorthey will stick to the bottom of the shelf when beingfired. When placing into the kiln. ensure the unglazedpart is on the kiln shelf. Or if using bead wire, theentire bead can be dipped. Just ensure there is noglaze in the hole or the bead will stick to the wirewhen firing.

Whenworking with shapes in square stitch orevenpeyote, it wise to first draw up your de-signon quad paper with the squares coloured toindicatewhich and what colour beads you will beworkingwith. It will also give you the advantage toascertaina starting point and it points out whereyouwillhave to increase and decrease in thedesign.

"Square stitch" sometimes called faux-loomstitch, as the beads are organized in neat columnsand rows in the same way as loom weaving. Thisproduces a strong fabric that is fairly stiff withrows and columns of beads.String the required number of beads for the firstrow. Then string the first bead of the second rowand go through the last bead of the first row andthe first bead of the second row in the same di-rection. The new bead sits on top of the old beadand the holes are horizontal. See diagram below

    I for the first step.

String the second bead of row 2 and go throughthe next-to-Iast bead of row I. Continue throughthe new bead of row 2. Repeat this step for theentire row. See diagram below for the secondstep.
