The DA in Limpopo met with farmers, community members, the police, andagricultural unions in Modimolle, followinga recent spate of farm attacks andmurders in the area. The meeting, whichstarted off with the community and endedwith a media briefing, took place at KoroCreek Golf Estate Club House on Monday,4 May.The party indicated that they had learned

that since January 2015, there have been22 farm attacks and seven farm murders inLimpopo. A delegation consisting of theparty’s Members of Parliament and theProvincial Legislature said that they foundthe community traumatized by theseattacks. The delegation was made up of theNational Spokesperson Phumzile vanDamme, Shadow Minister of Police DianneKohler Barner, Shadow Minister forAgriculture Annette Steyn, ModimolleConstituency Head Desiree van der Walt,Limpopo Provincial Chairperson LangaBodlani, Provincial Spokesperson forAgriculture Jacques Smalle, and ProvincialExecutive Committee member KatlegoPhaala.“The Station Commander at Modimolle

Police Station Colonel Isaac Maila informedus that half his vehicles were sitting ingarages and that he is experiencing highlevels of absenteeism. While the SAPSCaptain on duty says that he has sufficientstaff, but he just does not have thenumbers to deal with the problems in hisarea,” said van Damme.“According to the SAPS, farm murders

have increased by 30% in the country since2010. Experts predict that commercialfarmers’ numbers will decline to 15 000individuals over the next 15 years, causingsignificant job losses in the agricultural

The Limpopo Provincial Governmentexpressed their disapproval of the recentlooting of shops owned by foreigners inThabazimbi. The Office of the Premiercalled on residents to put an end to thelooting and other acts of violence. This follows recent events where a

group of community members alleged tohave been concerned about a rapist inthe area of Regorogile in Thabizimbigathered at a four-way stop in theevening of Monday, 27 April, where theyblocked the road and burned tyres. Thegroup then allegedly looted stock fromnearby foreign shops. They alsoallegedly burned down one shop. Theforeigners were taken to Thabazimbipolice station for their own safety.Thabazimbi Police spokesperson

sector, added to which the local productionof food will drop dramatically. This severelyrisks our food security as a country. Farmattacks and murders not only tear apartfamilies, but are a threat to the country’sfood security and threaten job-creation inthe agricultural sector. The DA hasrepeatedly called for a new approach torural safety that will put the protection of allrural communities at the heart of itsapproach,” van Damme said.To ensure the safety of all farming

communities, the party states that theywould establish a specialized rural safetyunit within the SAPS and deployspecialized rural reaction units to clearlyidentify rural crime hotspots on a rotatingbasis. They would also improve rural crimeintelligence gathering and the creation ofan SAPS Rural Intelligence Centre that willimprove the gathering and analyzing ofrural crime information and thus betterinform crime prevention initiatives.“It is clear that the lack of rural safety plan

is having a massive impact on our ruralcommunity. The agricultural sector playsan important role in the South Africaneconomy as it provides jobs to asignificant number of people. These arepeople that feed our nation, farmers, farmworkers, staff at commercial farms andemerging farmers all are vital to SouthAfrica’s livelihood and deserve to beprotected,” van Damme added. The party indicated that from discussions

on the day with farmers, farm workers andthe rural community at large, it is clear thatthey increasingly feel isolated and unsafe. They said that it is therefore up to thegovernment to ensure that the communityis protected as every South African shouldfeel safe and protected in their country. The DA said that they will continue to fight

for the safety and protection of ruralcommunities.

added.The provincial government highlighted

that these acts are not legal, andappealed for community members tocondemn these illegal acts.“The Limpopo government adheres to

the premise that South Africa belongs toeveryone who lives here,” said theProvincial Government SpokespersonPhuti Seloba.“We also appeal to the people who had

immersed themselves in looting torefrain from illicit acts and not allowthese shameful deeds to continue. Weare a listening government, people withissues must raise them and governmentwill study and implement resolutions. The Provincial Government furtherthanks the people of Limpopo who havelived peacefully with foreign nationals formany years.”

Jacques Botha, a Bela-Belaresident, writes: Just over aweek ago one of the Car Guards,in front of Van HeerdensPharmacy, looked seriously ill. Iwent to the Hospital where I wasdirected to the EmergencyServices Office. Within momentsthe two ladies, Betty Mamoela andDora Makhubela were geared upand we left to pick up their patient. It was a crossed conversation

jumping from English to Afrikaansto Tswana to French and backagain but we managed to providethem with all the informationrequired.Throughout the entire process

they were calm, gentle andgenuinely caring, treating the manas if he were royalty of sorts. To these two ladies an immense

appreciation for the service theyrendered, proving that despite allthe negative things one hearsabout the Health Services thatthere are still angels walkingamongst us. I can only hope thattheir superiors will take notice oftheir dedication and quality ofservice to the community andreward them generously.

‘Honour thy father and thy mother’says the Bible. Sadly, in SouthAfrica, honouring one’s father isnot always possible, what with theplague of absentee fathers in ourcountry. It is a tragedy, however, that

many young people raised bysingle mothers do not honouranyone, least of all the motherswho sacrificed dreams and hopesto their well-being.Even those in two-parent

families often disdain theirmothers, treating them with thekind of disrespect that, if youshowed it to a dog, would get youbitten. Is that fair?Consider that, in South Africa,

abortion as well as contraceptivesare freely available to any womanwho can reach a clinic or hospital— in that, we are luckier thanmany in America, where severalstates make it illegal to end anunwanted pregnancy and freecontraceptives is a totally alienconcept.Remember that the woman who

bore you could have gotten rid ofyou, or never had you. Rememberthat she made the choice, knowing that life would be hard, that she would lose much of herfreedom, and that her choicesfurther on in life would no longerhinge on what was best for her,but what was best for you.Often that may mean staying

with a job she hates, because youneeded to go to school. Orstaying with a man she hates, because he takes care of you. Forsome, it meant never finishingschool, or never going touniversity.Every day you can hear the

stories of students at university, whose mothers scrimped andsaved for years, so that theirchildren may have a chance at abetter life. Many of those chancesare wasted by young people toolazy to make the most of them, and then their mothers are oftenstuck taking care of grown menand women who should havebeen off living their own lives. Most of them do this withoutcomplaint and then, when theirchildren are older and havechildren of their own, often raisethose children themselves, to lettheir own children have the kindof life that they never had.Our mothers sacrificed so much

for us, to see us happy andhealthy and grown up, thatcelebrating Mother’s Day is thevery least we can do, to showthem that we recognize andappreciate all that they have donefor us.Mothers give us life — the least

we can do is give them love.
