Sometimes it is fun to engage in some “thinking games.” One game that is fun to play is, “Would You Rather?” To begin, offer your passengers two options and ask which they prefer and why. For example, you might say, “Would you rather live near the beach or the mountains?” Another game is “Three Favorites.” To play this game someone in the car needs to pick a category (books, movies), and then everyone shares his or her top three choices. Another fun challenge is “What Doesn’t Belong?” To play this game, you take turns naming items and asking the others in the car to explain which is the odd one out and why. Everyone usually enjoys this activity because there can be more than one “right” answer. For example, if I named “owl,” “ostrich,” and “eagle,” someone may respond, “Ostrich, because it can’t fly.” While another answer could be, “Owl, because it hunts at night.” These are a few suggestions to make time together in the car fun and stimulating for encouraging thinking through ideas. FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK Dear Blossom Hill Families:

Between afternoon activities, errands, and family adventures, we often find ourselves spending a lot of time on the go in the car. Sometimes it is fun to engage in some “thinking games.” One game that is fun to play is, “Would You Rather?” To begin, offer your passengers two options and ask which they prefer and why. For example, you might say, “Would you rather live near the beach or the mountains?”

Another game is “Three Favorites.” To play this game someone in the car needs to pick a category (books, movies), and then everyone shares his or her top three choices. Another fun challenge is “What Doesn’t Belong?” To play this game, you take turns naming items and asking the others in the car to explain which is the odd one out and why. Everyone usually enjoys this activity because there can be more than one “right” answer. For example, if I named “owl,” “ostrich,” and “eagle,” someone may respond, “Ostrich, because it can’t fly.” While another answer could be, “Owl, because it hunts at night.”

These are a few suggestions to make time together in the car fun and stimulating for encouraging thinking through ideas.

2016-2017 H&SC Committee Chair Openings

How Can You Help The Blossom Hill Community?

It takes help from hundreds of volunteers to execute all the events, programs, and services that the Blossom Hill Home and School Club support each year at our school. Currently, the H&SC Board is actively seeking volunteers to fill numerous Committee Chair positions for the 2016-2017 school year. Are you interested in getting more involved? Here is your opportunity. Take a peek at some of the openings available for next year:

Executive Board Positions • President Elect – Be a part of the H&SC’s Executive Board and

help shape the future of our school.

Committee Chair Positions • Hospitality – Help the H&SC Board get coffee and goodies for

various meetings throughout the year. • Green Team/Recycling Coordinator – Coordinate our school’s

recycling and environmentally-friendly programs like Trash Busters at lunchtime.

• Dads Club – Help organize set-up and breakdown of various H&SC events like Family Movie Night, The Harvest Festival and The Hive. If you are really ambitious, you can take this to the next level. Plan dads-only outings and adventures for dad and kids to enjoy together. The sky’s the limit with this position!

SR2S UPDATE Traffic Study

The Town of Los Gatos has commissioned a traffic study around schools in the community. The goal of the study is to build on Safe Routes to School programs currently in place and improve traffic flow in the Town. This is an exciting opportunity for schools and the community. You may notice individuals collecting data and observations through the end of April. They will be counting cars, bicyclists, and pedestrians as well as reviewing traffic flow during drop off and pick up times. Once that phase is complete there will be an opportunity to review new SR2S maps and ask questions. Look for information regarding those meetings in your Wednesday Packet after Spring Break. If you have any questions please contact the LGUSD SR2S Coordinator, Karen Briones, at [email protected].

K KINDERGARTEN: Our youngest students will explore the colorful world of artist Henri Matisse in March as his vibrant images and compelling story generate much discussion with their literal and expressive content. Workshop: Our next activity with Kinders consists of Foil Sculpture in May.

1 st FIRST GRADERS: The paintings and murals of Diego Rivera give our first-graders a glimpse into art from other cultures. Scenes from Mexico showing depictions of children’s games to dignified images of workers toiling are sure to pique their interest.

2 nd SECOND GRADERS: Aritst Romare Bearden and his experiences during the Harlem Renaissance and the Golden Age of Jazz captivate our second-graders as they learn to express their own stories through a collage work shop.

3 rd THIRD GRADERS: The focus during March is on the outdoor massive sculpture of Claes Oldenburg and Coosje Van Bruggen. From a bridge made of a giant spoon to hamburgers that sit on the floor, students become enthralled with the possibilities that fanciful sculpture bring to the discussion. The public may be familiar with “Cupid’s Span” by AT&T Park in San Francisco and “Corridor Pin” at the De Young Museum.

4 th FOURTH GRADERS: Artist Georgia O’Keeffe is the focus for March as students compare her paintings of nature and of cities. Her individual experiences and life-long commitment to art are examined as students learn about America’s most famous woman painter.

5 th FIFTH GRADERS: The month of March is when our 5th graders view site-specific pieces of art and monuments created by artists as their personal response to an idea and an area. The artists profiled are Keith Haring and his pictorial subway art; Christo’s & Jeanne-Claude’s temporary- environment work, Maya Lin’s “Viet Nam Memorial,” and Andy Goldsworthy’s manipulations of nature. Workshop in spring: Students photograph a picture and edit to create a piece of art.

7 th SEVENTH GRADERS: The French and Spanish language classes at Fisher receive slide shows focusing on art history from their respective countries during the time they explore their cultural offerings. French students then participate in an “art Jeopardy game.”

All Guest Artist: Jennifer Kretschmer will visit all the schools this spring where she will demonstrate and compare digital and traditional methods of art. Annual Student Art Show sponsored and installed by The Art Docents of Los Gatos: May 2-6, in the Multi-Purpose Room at Fisher Middle School. All students in grades K-5 will have a piece of art exhibited in the show and select pieces from Fisher students will also be on display. K-5 students visit during school hours with their classes; the show is open daily from 2:00-4:00 to the public (except Friday when it closes at 1:00) and during the evening of Thursday concurrent with Fisher’s Open House.

Join the Art Docents of Los Gatos. No art experience required; training is offered in the fall of every year and membership is as varied and diverse as our community. Browse our monthly newsletter “The Palette” at www.artdocents.com to discover more of what we do. The Art Docents of Los Gatos is generously supported by LGUSD, LGEF, Home & School Clubs, Local governments, Silicon Valley Creates, Los Gatos Community Foundation and community groups through grants and donations.
