Please look to formal Evansville Lutheran School communications for information about what our school is doing in the beginning and throughout the year. We will not necessarily follow everything that EVSC schools are doing un-less we are mandated by the State of Indiana to do so. Information will be sent out through the use of the “Monarch Messenger Newsletter”, through Mailchimp emails and to ELS Notification on the Remind App. Do NOT rely on social media unless information is posted on the ELS Facebook page. Please refer to our communications that have been sent out or contact the School Office and speak to Mr. Shull or communicate with the office staff. We will make sure your questions are answered to the best of our ability for what ELS is planning at that time.
July 20, 2020
Dear Evansville Lutheran School Parents,
After discussion with other Evansville area private schools, ELS has decided to set a start date for
traditional learning on Monday, August 10th. Taking these few extra days for the start of the school
year will allow our staff extra time to prepare for the beginning of the year. We hope it will give our
families comfort in knowing that our students and staff are a top priority.
On the following pages, you will find our plan for traditional school days while taking precautions
and keeping everyone safe. There are three columns with varying guidelines. On Monday, August
10 we will be in the Green column. **We need each student to provide personal, clean masks in
their school supplies. Students will be encouraged to wear them at times where we cannot socially
distance 6ft. but will not be required to wear one all the time.
Please take the time to read all of the following pages. This document was sent out via ELS Notifi-
cation on the Remind App, through MailChimp and each family will receive a hard copy in their Reg-
istration folder. Please watch the ways we communicate with you as information will be sent out
quickly for any changes that we may need to make.
We have had some donations from ELS supporters. We’d like to share with you what was donated
and how we will use them. One of the donations was a lanyard for each student. This will help stu-
dents keep their mask clean and in one spot when not in use. We have also been able to order
enough thermometers for each class and area to have one.
We look forward to seeing everyone at their Registration Appointments this week. All staff will be
wearing a mask during Registration (per current city-wide regulations - wearing a mask in public,
indoor areas). We will have some available at the entrance for those who would like to wear one.
Mr. Tony Shull
Principal, Evansville Lutheran School
Overview
Evansville Lutheran School has developed a “Comeback Plan” for reopening our school
building and providing educational ministry for the 2020-2021 school year in response to
the COVID-19 pandemic. The plan provides a tiered approach with actionable steps that will
be taken before students and employees return to school buildings, along with school actions
that will be taken given the possibility of varied levels of community spread of COVID-19
throughout the 2020-2021 school year. This plan is built with consideration for the guidance
and recommendations of health officials and state and local leaders, and it’s designed to
prioritize the health and safety of students and staff as we open school buildings and provide
educational ministry for the 2020-2021 school year. While careful consideration has gone into
the construction of this Comeback Plan, school leadership recognizes that the plan must be
fluid to allow ELS to respond to potential changes in local health-related regulations.
The Back to School 2020-2021 Comeback Plan is grounded in the identity of Evansville
Lutheran School, as defined by our Mission...
OUR MISSION
Evansville Lutheran School provides a superior education, guided by Lutheran principles, in an
environment of Christian love. Our students are equipped to go forward in life with Christ.
ELS Back to School 2020-2021 - Decision Tree
The decision-tree below provides a flexible framework to address challenges that may develop throughout the
2020-2021 school year, based upon the possibility of varied levels of community spread of COVID-19. Instead of a
one-size-fits-all approach, the decision tree provides a menu of instructional models and responses that Evansville
Lutheran School can adopt to ensure the continued success and safety of students and staff members.

and all students in the classroom for full school
days, each day of the week
• Maximize social distancing of student seating,
to the extent practicable
• Limit physical interaction of partner/group
work
• Establish distance between the teacher’s
desk/board and students’ desks
• Identify and utilize large spaces (i.e.
gymnasiums, auditoriums, outside spaces – as
weather permits) for social distancing
• No sharing of supplies between students; clean and
disinfect shared supplies after each use
• Managed entrance and exiting of areas for special/
elective classes such as Choir, Band, Art
Prepare for potential future distance learning by
increasing current blended learning:
• Develop a digital learning plan
• Integrate virtual learning practices
• Allow students at home temporarily due to illness or
quarantine to complete their coursework virtually

Other Drop-Off/Pick-Up Protocols: • Morning Care - Parents/guardians may drop off students for Morning Care starting at 6:45 am—7:20 am at the Gym Door. *There is no charge for Morning Care but everyone who utilizes it must be approved. A morning care application needs to be filled out before school starts. • Virginia & Elsas (Library Door) - Doors automatically open at 7:00 am, please do not have students ring the button if the doors are locked, just be patient and the doors will unlock on their own. • YCare - All communication needs to go through the YMCA downtown. When picking up students after school hours, parents should use the Library Entrance off Elsas, ringing the bell to let them know you are there.

Returning to
School After
Illness or
Quarantine
As per current CDC guidelines, ELS will adopt the following guidelines for returning to school for
students who are COVID positive or presumed positive:
1. Symptom-based strategy
● Persons with COVID-19 who have symptoms and were directed to care for themselves at home
may discontinue isolation & return to school under the following conditions:
○ At least 3 days (72 hours) have passed since recovery defined as resolution of fever
without the use of fever-reducing medications and improvement in respiratory
symptoms (e.g., cough, shortness of breath); and,
○ At least 10 days have passed since symptoms first appeared.
○ A doctor’s note should be sent with the student upon return to school.
2. Test-based strategy
● Previous recommendations for a test-based strategy remain applicable; however, a test-based
strategy is contingent on the availability of ample testing supplies and laboratory capacity as
well as convenient access to testing.
● Persons who have COVID-19 who have symptoms and were directed to care for themselves at
home may discontinue isolation under the following conditions:
○ Resolution of fever without the use of fever-reducing medications and
○ Improvement in respiratory symptoms (e.g., cough, shortness of breath), and
○ Negative results of a COVID-19 molecular assay for detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNA
from at least two consecutive respiratory specimens collected ≥24 hours apart (total
of two negative specimens)
○ A doctor’s note should be sent with the student upon return to school.
3. Time-based strategy for persons with confirmed positive COVID-19 who have not had any symptoms and
were directed to care for themselves at home may discontinue isolation under the following
conditions:
● At least 10 days have passed since the date of their first positive COVID-19 diagnostic test
assuming they have not subsequently developed symptoms since their positive test.
● If they develop symptoms, then the symptom-based or test-based strategy should be used.
Note, because symptoms cannot be used to gauge where these individuals are in the course of
their illness, it is possible that the duration of viral shedding could be longer or shorter than 10
days after their first positive test.
● A doctor’s note should be sent with the student upon return to school.
For students or staff who had close contact with a COVID positive person, the student (and potentially
siblings) should self-quarantine for 14 days if the contact was longer than 10-15 minutes and social
distancing was not in place. A doctor’s note should be sent with the student upon return to school. If
returning to school prior to 14 days after exposure, a mask should be worn if possible and where
practical.
Distance learning will be available for students at home due to situations of illness and/or quarantine.
