    POTENTATE “2014” KEVIN J. CARTER

please let us know. You do not have to be a Past Master to enjoy doing ritual work and, as I said last month, if you yourself would like to participate in these degrees with us, please let us know.

I represented Bektash at the NH York Rite formal banquet on Friday, May 9 at The Yard restaurant in Manchester.

I represented Bektash at Grand Lodge on Saturday, May 17. The visitation for Tunis Shrine of Ottawa took place May 23-25. Lady Melanie and I travelled to Perth, Ontario for the event. We were joined by Dick Quindley and Lady Con-nie. It was, as usual, a good time.

Sphinx Shrine's visitation happened May 30 - June 1 in Windsor CT. Lady Melanie and I were able to attend since the Smoker, which was originally sched-uled for this Friday night, was cancelled. It was unfortunate, but with only a very small number of tickets sold, cancelling was obviously the right thing to do. We ended up having a great time at the Sphinx visitation, along with CRAP Dick Quindley and Lady Connie, and all our friends from NESA.

Coming up for June, the Third Annual Bektash Poker Run will take place on Sunday, June 1. Last year, we had about 60 riders participating in this event. We hope they will all again complete the course picked out for them then enjoy the barbeque at the finish line at Bektash when it is over. The Chairman for this event is Chaplain John Flaherty. Cook-ing will be done by the Bektash Chefs. There is also a rumor that some guy named Shamus will show up.

The morning of June 7, I will represent Bektash at the NH Scottish Rite Council of Deliberation in Concord.

    Continued on next page

    Greetings to all Nobles,

Lady Melanie and I, along with Chief Rabban Dick Quindley and Lady Con-nie, as well as Past Potentate Bill Hebert and Lady Sharon, attended the Joint Visitation of Mt. Sinai and Cairo Shrines in Essex Junction VT on May 2-4. It was very gratifying to get together with our counterparts and friends from all the other Shrines in the Northeast Shrine Association. A fine time was had by all in attendance and Lady Melanie (as usual) posted a picture of us at the event on Facebook within minutes of the picture being taken.

On Wednesday, May 7, your Bektash Shriners' Masonic Degree Team per-formed a Master Mason degree for our masonic brethren at Morning Star Lodge in Wolfeboro. There were four candi-dates - three from Morning Star Lodge and one from Winnipisaukee Lodge in Alton. It was a great masonic event and my thanks go out to all those who helped make it a success. Please note, if your Worshipful Master would like us to do the same for you at your Lodge,

There will be at least seven Candidates and the degree work will be done solo by yours truly as I did for Illustrious Ed Daneault a few years back. The work of the day being done, we will have a Western theme dinner and then dance to the mu-sic selections of Summer Brown. To quote our friends from Karnak, "Let's have some fun, eh?"

And speaking of Karnak, the weekend of June 13-15, Lady Melanie and I will be in Pointe Claire, Quebec for the visi-tation of Karnak Shriners of Montreal. Our Stated Meeting will take place on June 16 at the Shrine at 7:00 PM. All Nobles are welcome to attend. Please be there. Remember, it's all "For the Kids," Kevin Carter Potentate 2014

RECORDER’S CORNER In this month's Bektash News we have information on the Northeast Shrine Association Field Days to be held on August 21-24, 2014. It is going to be another great

Shrine weekend of fun and excitement. Our Hosts this year will be the Melha Shriners of Springfield, Massachusetts. They have a lot planned for us which we know you will really enjoy. The hotel we have booked is the LaQuinta Inns & Suites in Springfield. They have all the ameni-ties for an enjoyable stay. We all look forward to a fun filled weekend with many of your fellow Shriners and their Ladies attending. So, please sign up early before we run out of rooms. Most likely we will not be able to add rooms once our allocation of 35 rooms is ex-hausted. For more information please go to pages 36-39.

Please don’t forget to bring in your winter collection of Aluminum Tabs to the Bektash Office. We have several barrels that need filling. Please keep the Tabs coming. It is a great source of revenue for the Bektash Hospital Patient Transportation Fund. Thanks for your dedi-cation and cooperation.

Please come to Bingo and see how well it is operating, especially in our smoke free environment. The only smell is those delicious dogs and burgers being prepared by our own Bektash Chefs. We now have delicious French fries along with weekly specials. Bingo is one of our biggest Fund Raisers. We are so busy these days that we could use some additional help. Lucky Seven ticket sales have increased consid-erably. Why not join your fellow Shriners and their Ladies for loads of fun and excitement? Give Robert St. Jacques, PP a call at 603-455-6556 or Lloyd Doughty at 603-860-0435 if you are interested in join-ing Bingo. See more information in the Bingo ad on page 27 in this edition of the Bektash News. Thanks.

We are looking for volunteers once again to give a hand at this years "Fez"tival of Trees. To organize and run an event like the "Fez"tival of Trees, starting early is absolutely critical. The Committee has had sev-eral meetings starting immediately after last year's most successful "Fez"tival of Trees.

Being successful happens only by hard work and dedication. With your support this can be accomplished very easily. This is now our

  • June 2014 13

biggest Fund Raiser of the year. Please help Bektash and your "Fez" tival of Trees Committee by signing on early. We thank you for your past support and hopefully for your future support. Our next meet-ing will be on June 24th at 7PM at the Bektash Shrine Center.

We still have several members that have not paid their membership dues for 2013 and 2014. If you are not sure you have paid you can check to see if you have 2014 dues card . If you do not, you probably have not paid. If you have a problem paying there is no issue we can’t try to accommodate your particular personal needs. Our goal is to keep you as a member of Bektash. Give it a try; call me today at the Bektash Office.

Please make sure you have read the following notice that was an-nounced in the April issue of the Bektash News and I will repeat it just in case you missed reading it. If you wish to continue to sub-scribe to the mailed version of the Bektash News you will be able to do so by paying a subscription fee of $1.00 per month. A small amount when you compare it to our cost of printing and postage of $1.50 per month. To eliminate this charge you can simply opt out of the mailed version and receive it for free electronically at www.bektashshriners.org. If you want to do so, please send to the Bektash office your Email address so that we can add it to our elec-tronic list.

To repeat, if you currently subscribe to the electronic color version there will be no change. If you wish to continue with the printed version you are asked to send $6.00 by June 1st. to cover the cost from July 1st through December 31st. And, on or before January 1, 2015 you will then owe $12.00 for the whole of 2015 year. Thanks to those that have paid and to those that opted out previously and those that opt out now for your cooperation and understanding.

As always, there are many functions and activities held by Bektash. Come and Join us. You will love it and you will not be disappointed. Check the calendars and ads for more information in each month’s Bektash News.

Yours in the faith, Joel Weinstein Recorder

♫ The first parade of the 2014 season will be in Hooksett on Sunday, May 25th with a formation at 11am. Please note a correction in the gathering place. It is NOT at the Library, but at Lambert Park. ♫ We will once again march in the Memorial Day Parade in Hen-niker on Monday, May 26th with a formation at the school at 9am. This will be the 64th year we have performed in the Henniker Parade. ♫ Plaistow will be our destination on June 21st for their Old Home Days Parade. We will form at the Library at 1pm. Please not that June 28/29 will be a parade free weekend. All-in-all we are scheduled to do eleven parades this summer so enjoy the parade-free weekends when they arrive. ♫ Please check your uniforms to make sure they didn’t shrink over the winter. If you need to make a size swap talk to our Leader Ron Perry. ♫ We always need horses and our Leader suggests that you bring a Mason along with you to the parades so he can pull a drum. Who knows? You might even create a new Shriner. ♫ Drum Corps Trivia: On June 25, 1931 a “Personality Contest” was sponsored by the Drum Corps and Patrol A at the Arcadia in Manchester . The event netted $500 for the Shriner’s Hospital in Springfield, Ma., $700 for the Bektash Real Estate Association and $1,325. each for the Drum Corps and Patrol A. In 1931 this was a lot of money! See you at the Parades! Fraternally, Ron Parsons, Secretary

    Dear Nobles and Ladies:

It's not too soon to start thinking about going to Springfield, Massachusettes to celebrate the Northeast Shrine Association Field Days. Our host, the Melha Shriners has a wonderful weekend planned with something for every-body to enjoy.

Springfield, Agawam, West Springfield and the Pioneer Valley offer many great places to visit, as well as many outstanding restaurants. Within a mile from Headquarters Hotel, the Sheraton in downtown Springfield, one can visit the Basketball Museum and the Dr. Suess Museum, the Forest Park and Zoo, the Springfield Armory, Melha Temple and the Shriners Hospital for Children, to name a few. They are hoping to provide a continuous shuttle that will stop at numerous places, where you can get on and off for as long as you like.

A few miles to the north, one can find the five College campuses; Mt. Holy-oke, Smith Amherst, University of Mass and Hampshire College. Another very popular attraction is Yankee Candle, again in the same area. The Big E, located just across the bridge in West Springfield is home of the Eastern States Exposition, where the motorized competition and the Ladies Luncheon will be held. Those that have campers and motor homes may also make use of the facilities offered at the Big “E” Eastern States Exposition Grounds. Agawam, home of Six Flags of New England, will be the site of our Saturday parade, and the banquet which will be held in the Picnic Grove at Six Flags of New England. Six Flags have offered us a reduced park admission for Fri-day and Saturday. An evening of fun and entertainment has been planned following the banquet. All in all, there is much to see and do. Melha hopes that you will take advan-tage of what is being offered.

For the registration forms, more information either go to the Bektash web site: www.BektashShriners.org or call the office at 603-225-5372. The hotel information and the registration form are on page 38.

THE 100 MILLION DOLLAR CLUB The 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children have provided lifesaving and life-changing medical care to more than 800,000 children, regardless of their ability to pay. The money to provide these needed services at 22 hospitals comes from many sources: community donations; fundraising events; investment income; and support from the Shriners Inter-national. As health care costs increase, Shriners Hospitals needs your help, more than ever, to continue to provide more specialized care, offer medical education and conduct more research. Too many people believe that if they cannot donate or leave a large sum or money, their gift will not count. Every contribution helps. In order to encourage donors to contribute to Shriners Hospitals for Children, the HUNDRED MILLION DOLLAR CLUB was es-tablished in 1972. The club is named for its goal of adding 100 million dollars to the endowment fund through gifts or bequests of $100 or more.

HOW TO JOIN There are three ways to become a member of the 100 Million Dollar Club: (1) By contributing $100 or more to Shriners Hospi-tals for Children; (2) By having your will include a bequest of $100 or more to Shriners Hospitals for Children; or (3) By adding a provision to an existing will leaving $100 or more to Shriners Hospitals for Children. Shriners. Please fill out the form on the right and send your contribution to Bektash Shriner's Recorder Joel Weinstein.

WHAT YOU RECEIVE Each donor receives a handsome 100 Million Dollar Club certifi-cate. By contributing $100, you can feel like a million, knowing that you have helped to ensure that Shriners Hospitals for Chil-dren will be able to continue helping children in the years to come.
