Greetings, Sunday, February 9th is World Marriage Day, an opportunity to focus on building a culture of life and love that begins with supporting and promoting marriage and the family. National Marriage Week is celebrated from February 7-14. This year’s theme is "Stories from the Domestic Church." What is a “Domestic Church”? Every family is called to be a place of prayer, service, and love—a “little Church of the home.” Families naturally do this in their day-to-day lives: “The spirituality of family love is made up of thousands of small but real ges-tures” (Pope Francis, Amoris Laetitia, no. 315). They do this by strengthening the bonds of love among their members, and by asking the Lord’s presence into their homes. Today’s readings can be applied to all married couples. They also provide clear instruction for all of us who try to live as stewards or caretakers of God’s grace. They offer wonderfully clear guidance on what matters most to God in the way we prioritize our lives and the way God intends for us to use the gifts that have been given to us. The first reading, from the prophet Isaiah, gives us very straightforward instructions: “Thus says the Lord: Share your bread with the hungry, shelter the oppressed and the homeless; clothe the naked when you see them, and do not turn your back on your own.” The Lord gives no wiggle room here — care for our brothers and sisters in need is a “must do” for the Christian steward. But note how generous our God is to us when we do these things. “Then your light shall break forth like the dawn and your wound shall quickly be healed.” The more we give ourselves away the more we will find ourselves, and “light shall rise” for us in the form of more of God’s grace in our lives and more joy and peace in our hearts. Our Gospel passage, from Matthew sends us out on our stewardship way with a bang as Jesus declares to us, His disciples, that we are the “salt of the earth” and the “light of the world.” But, Jesus adds, salt no longer gives flavor if allowed to go stale — light cannot bring its blessed brightness if left hidden. Therefore, we must act! We must live our lives so that others will see the things that we do — the ways that we serve others, care for the vulnerable, prioritize our family relationships and above all, our love for God — and then give God the glory. May God bless all married couples. May God help each one of us as we strive to live according to God’s ways. Fr. Jim

Greetings! During the end of January and the first weeks in February, the students will begin preparation for Lenten Season. Classes will practice prayers, visit the Cathedral to learn the Stations of the Cross and continue the study of Jesus' path to The Cross. This past week, the Diocese sent out information on Higher Ground retreats for both High School and Middle School stu-dents-these retreats are a fun week of faith and socialization and offer an opportunity to grow deeper in their Catholic Faith. To learn more or to register, check out highergroundretreats.org or check out the Diocese website. Please encourage your chil-dren to attend a retreat. We will not have religious education classes on Wednesday, February 12th. Classes will resume on February 19th. Questions for Parents-are you attending mass each week with your children? Please attend mass, we encourage the students to attend each week but they need the guidance of their parents to role model! Take a few minutes to visit with your children about what they are learning in class each week, stop and visit with their Catechist as they are working hard to guide your chil-dren on their Faith Journey and we appreciate them! If you have any questions, please contact Barb Ernst, DRE at 308-384-2523 ext. 213. Thank you for your support of St. Mary's Religious Education programs!

If you are ill – please do not hold hands during the Our Father. Instead of shaking hands at the Sign of Peace, you can simply cross your hands over your heart and say “Peace Be With You.” If you are ill, we also ask that you do not receive from the chalice so that germs do not get spread. Thank you for your understanding and for helping us to stay healthy.

The person who has been “saved,” who has “heard the good news of salvation,” still lives in an unsaved world, a world sadly oblivious to the presence of God. Today’s readings outline how the disciple is present in the world. The outline begins with Isaiah: “Share your bread . . . shelter the oppressed . . . clothe the naked” (Isaiah 58:7). Those who hear the word of salvation are not insensitive to the urgent needs of others. Then Paul reminds his flock that he brought Christ to them not in eloquence or wisdom, but by being with them in the “weakness and fear” of their daily lives (1 Corinthians 2:3). Finally, Jesus tells his disciples to go out into the gloom and darkness of the streets of the world and let God’s light shine through their good deeds. We disciples don’t save the world. To the extent, however, that we have heard the word of God and been awakened to God’s presence, we may spread that word and bring that presence to others. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Saints and Special Observances

“As disciples of Jesus, we are called to become neighbors to everyone (cf. Lk 10:29-37), and to show special favor to those who are poorest, most alone and most in need. In helping the hungry, the thirsty, the foreigner, the naked, the sick, the impris-oned—as well as the child in the womb and the old person who is suffering or near death—we have the opportunity to serve Jesus.” Pope Saint John Paul II, Evangelium vitae, 87. © 1995 Libreria Editrice Vaticana. Word of Life

If there is snow on the ground – we encourage you all to enter the church through the northwest entrance closed to Mary’s Closet (close to the rectory). Since our snow-removal ministry is still getting established, we do not know if we will have sufficient help to clear the sidewalks and stairs at the other entrances of the church.

Weekday Mass Goers

As we prepare for colder weather, the Cathedral could use help with snow removal. We can use responsible stewards who can be available early in the mornings to help clear the parking

lot, sidewalks and hand-clearing the steps. Our hope is to form a responsible team who can as-sist Jim Lehl, our coordinator of Maintenance at the Cathedral. If it snows overnight we begin at 4:50 am in the morning. If you are interested – please contact Fr. Jim at the parish office (384-2523).

Saludos.

Baptism is the beginning of a lifetime journey in faith. It is our privilege and our joy to welcome new members to the life of the church and St. Mary’s Cathedral for month of January:

Johanna Perez & Maria Beltran.

During these winter months please take care when walking around our facility – especially when there is snow and ice. We have many steps and many places where ice tends to form. Please notice that we have put snow shovels and ice/snow-melt near many of our entrances. Near these items there is also a clip board with a form. If you are kind enough to help remove snow – or to spread the ice-melt we ask that you please record what you did and the time you did it. This helps us with our Catholic Mutual insurance company requirements.
