Bulletin Deadlines

My good friends in Christ Jesus, This weekend we celebrate the 90th Anniversary of the Dedication of our current Cathedral Church. This bulletin contains some additional historical information and photos. Please stop over at the Parish Hall after mass for a reception and to receive a free antique postcard of the Cathedral. We also have additional historical items on display.

Normally on this weekend we would be the celebration of the 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time. This year we will take time during the weekend liturgies to remember that our current Cathedral church building was dedicated 90 years ago on July 5th, 1928. This means that the readings and prayers will come from the “Common of the Anniversary of the Dedication of the Church” instead of the ones you normally find for that weekend. The readings we selected for this weekend are Isaiah 56:1,6-7 (“For my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.”). Psalm 84 (“How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord, mighty God!”). 1 Corinthians 3:9c-11, 16-17 (“Do you not know that you are the temple of God?”). The Gospel is John 4:19-24 (“God is Spirit, and those who worship him must worship in Spirit and truth.”).

This weekend we are also offering tours of the Cathedral. They are offered Saturday evening at 7:00 pm and Sunday afternoon at 3:30 pm.

While we are honoring a beautiful Cathedral church – it is important to also honor the community which has been gathering in this church for these many years. The real beauty of a church is the faith that is exhibited, professed and celebrated by that community. We also honor our ancestors who sacrificed so that we might continue to enjoy our Cathedral church building and community of faith. We, now, become part of that history. What will our sacrifice and generosity of sharing faith put forth for future generations to enjoy?

May God continue to bless our parish community and our efforts. Fr. Jim

Almighty God, thank Thee for the job of this day. May we find gladness in all its toil and difficulty, its pleasure and success, and even in its failure and sorrow. We would look always away from ourselves, and behold the glory and the need of the world that we may have the will and the strength to bring the gift of gladness to others; that with them we stand to bear the burden and heat of the day and offer Thee the praise of work well done. Amen. --Bishop Charles Lewis Slattery (1867-1930)

St. Mary’s Cathedral Eucharistic Adoration Prayer Intentions

“Please remember the Cathedral in your will”

We began passing this special crucifix at one of our English masses and at our Spanish masses. Every week this crucifix will be given to a family who takes it into their home and enthrones it in a place of honor. A prayer book will accompany the crucifix so that you are encouraged to pray daily for vocations. At the end of the week you return it to the small table near the ambo (lectern) so that it can be passed to another family.

Of course, it is the work of all of us to pray and work for more vocations to the priesthood, religious life and permanent diaconate.

Like our page and you will receive the meditation of the day, the Saint ( Blessed) of the day/story and the

Gospel of the day to your Facebook page in each morn-ing. Great way to start you day!

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Last week’s Treasure mentioned the “Nuns of the Battlefield,” religious sisters from several communities who served as nurses in the Civil War. Florence Nightingale had only instituted female nurses a decade before in the Crimean War, so the idea of women tending to wounded soldiers was extraordinary. The medical and sanitary conditions on the battlefields were appalling, and the sisters were nearly all teachers. Few had any medical training beyond what they had learned as youngsters in the family. Anti-Catholic prejudice was so deeply entrenched in America that sisters could not wear their habits in public. These sisters were the first, and people on both the Union and Confederate sides soon began to marvel at their bravery, efficiency, and respect for Protestant soldiers. More than six hundred sisters from twenty-one communities went to war, serving in wretched conditions. They were tough and single-minded, efficient and fearless. After the war, sisters could appear in public everywhere in the reunited nation, and often received the praise and gratitude of grateful soldiers and family members on behalf of their sister nurses. An outdoor monument to the “Nuns of the Battlefield” stands in Washington at M Street and Rhode Island Avenue. The inscription reads: “They comforted the dying, nursed the wounded, carried hope to the imprisoned, gave in His name a drink of water to the thirsty.” —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

“Gracious Father, I thank you for the mercy you have shown in forgiving my sins and for the peace that comes from being recon-ciled with you and with your Church.”

Padre Jim Golka.
