Why do we need Protein?

How much Protein do I need*?

Our bodies are dependant on protein for tissue development, maintenance and repair

Our body uses protein to make blood, skin, hair, bone, and muscle

We need protein to stay active and mobile

Dietary Protein is a source of essential amino acids. Essential amino acids cannot be made by our metabolism, so it is essential they are consumed in our diet

For most people to achieve optimum health it is usually preferable to consume more protein than the recommended daily intake (RDI) this is because:

Protein RDI:

• Is a recommended minimum

• Avoids protein losses – maintains lean body mass

• ~37-64g protein/day1

Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Range (AMDR):

• Is a recommended range

• Help prevent chronic diseases, meet micronutrient needs, support optimal lean body mass

• 75-125g protein/day2

* Based on ANZ recommendations for adults1 For most adults (based on body weight)2 For someone consuming 2000 calories/day

Our body is approximately 16% pure protein

Protein is integral to a healthy diet and can provide energy, supports muscle growth and a healthy body composition, and provides a feeling of fullness

Protein is continually being made and broken down in the body – the body needs dietary protein every day to fuel this

Do consumers value protein?Consumers link protein with a number of different benefits

Complete protein:

• High quality proteins

• Provides an adequate concentration of all the essential amino acids to meet human requirements

• Includes dairy protein – the protein in milk is a rich source of all the EAA, and has the added benefit of both rapid, and slow digesting protein, for quick recovery and sustained release of EAA

Incomplete protein:

• Does not provide adequate concentrations of all the essential amino acids to meet human requirements

• Does not provide all essential amino acids to meet human requirements

• Typically plant derived but includes collagen
