The roots of the Department of Architecture are in Kaunas, when in year 1922

it was established in Faculty of Technique of the newly founded Lithuanian

University. During the initial stage it was supervised by Prof. Mykolas Songaila.

During long years the Department of Architecture was changing it’s place – in

the beginning it was part of Vytautas Magnus University, later - Kaunas Poly-

technic Institute, after the restructuring of this institute, in 1971 Architecture

Department was moved from Kaunas to Vilnius Civil Engineering Institute (now

VGTU), to the newly created Faculty of Architecture.

This school of architecture, until the end of 70-ties (as part of technological

university) was educating architects-engineers. From 80-ties the study pro-

gram was expanded and wide range of artistic disciplines implemented (archi-

tectural composition, architectural semantics, psychology and etc.), since then

future architects are trained while combining rational and artistic directions

in order to achieve high professional level. To enhance quality of education,

architects who are famous and progressive in their creative activities are con-

stantly involved in the teaching process. At this moment 80 percent of teach-

ers in this department are successfully practicing architects.

The Department of Architecture proposes three levels of architecture edu-

cation: bachelor, master and doctoral. During Vilnius period (since 1971) the

Department of Architecture has prepared 706 certificated architects, 743

bachelors of architecture and 319 masters (36 of them were foreign students).

Currently the Erasmus program enables every year 20-25 students from

abroad to come to study to the Department of Architecture.

The aim of the final BA project is to design a Modern Art Center in Vilnius. The project is allocated in the plot between Parod( and Mi*kini( streets in Lazdynai district.

It is a Four-stored building with the underground car parking, art works storages, café, universal library area and educational studio which can be transformed into a confer-ence room, administrative premises, digital library center, auxiliary rooms, exposition halls. Visitors area is designed on the ground floor while the main exposition hall - above it. The building consists of the cylinder and the rectangular volume on the top of it. The architectural concept and spatial structure symbolically echoes the link between empirical and art world. The surrounding space is designed as a public square. The square and the building symbolically relate through the reflection.

The project aims to attract the Modern Art Center as an engaging access to culture, the promotion of artistic awareness, the space for leisure, meetings and contemplation.

Architekt)ros studij( programos baigiamasis bakalauro darbas - Modernaus meno cen-tras Vilniuje. Pastatas projektuojamas *alia Parod( ir Mi*kini( gatvi( esan, iame sklype Lazdyn( mikrorajone. This work is a response to a problem of physical space monopoly in a modern city that made it impossible for humans to freely form their own environment. Social center is a cluster of free-access spaces where people can freely perform various types of work and activities, which then showcased to other social center residents, stimulates natural community development. By placing private living modules of social center residents on top of derelict industrial framework a baseline for space ownership is established, creating environment in which existential principal of human being is justified through importance and responsibility towards other community members.

The Department of Urban Design of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University

(VGTU) represents the positions of urban design education and research in

Lithuania and boasts of having nearly 70-year-old traditions (it was founded in

1944, its first head was associate professor Steponas Stulginskis). The Depart-

ment’s curriculum is based on the European concept of urban design subjects.

Urban design is treated as a branch of architecture with such main fields of re-

search and design as urban structure, urban space and the build-up (buildings)

shaping it. Urban design is an integral part of architectural arts and education

as well as one of the architectural activities.

Lecturers of the Department of Urban Design teach basic disciplines of ur-

ban design arts and science at the level of undergraduate studies (BArch) at

the Faculty of Architecture. Knowledge in the field of urban design is further

deepened at postgraduate studies, Master degree (Architectural Studies axis).

Urban Design Department trains professionals at three levels of qualification:

BA, MA and PhD .

From 1992 students of the Departmen of Urban Design (VGTU) succes-

fully take part in national and international competitions of students’ works

with their prize winning semestral and graduation projects. The most recent

achievement was participation in the 3rd International Festival for Architecture,

Design and Civil Engineering Schools of Eurasia in 2013 at Yildiz Technical Uni-

verstiy, Istanbul, with four prizewinning projects of the Department’s students

Urban quarters located so close to the city center and at the same time surrounded by nature should be an important and vibrant part of the city. Yet industrial buildings built in the Soviet times have a!ected the local identity and, as a result, the current situation significantly conflicts with the context. The work proposes the creation of new high quality urban public spaces and green links, integrating them into the overall system of the city’s urban spaces, including connections to Uzupis district and the Old Town. A new pedestrian passage is designed as well as Vilnele river is customized for recrea-tional use by creating two new public spaces by the water. A proposal of new urban tissue is composed, maintaining and articulating the typical perimeter block principle and adapting some of the former industrial buildings for a new use.

Master‘s thesis considers the structure of Klaip+da old town and its surrounding areas. The main urban architectural concept is based on strengthening the city’s visual identity and developing a system of nominal urban spaces in Atgimimas square and Old Town surrounding areas, which creates a protective zone. In order to express the qualita-tive concept, three significant spatial nodes are detailed. An architectural proposal for these urban spaces is presented by open archeological foundations, semantic water lines around the bastions, highlighted Bir1a’s bridge–Tilt( street axis. The proposal also conciders reconstruction of Klaip+da’s Musical theatre into representative Opera house.

The site of the former factory is in the Quarto Inferiore area, in the north-east of Bolo-gna. The architectural idea of the cultural centre was to create a new centre which will attract visitors who will be interested in its architectural and fuctional soliutions. The capacity of the building was changed adapting it to the current needs. The essential prominent elements of the building are – the network of the building columns, outdoor colonade which is holding the roof, glass facades and rectangular shapes. The third floor was repealed to increase the height of the ceiling. The building consist exposition spaces, multifunctional halls, o#ces, cafes, restaurants and training spaces. The main symbol of the building is a golden 3D hall tangled by tubes. These tubes extend through the gallery and eventually lead to the exposition hall. Inside the 3D hall visitors can experience 3D projections. Golden tubes are visible from most of the building perspec-tives, it is like a sculpture inside the building which invites to come in.

Pravieniskes is a small city known as the biggest imprisonment institution in Lithuania. The environment is really horrible, the residents are surrounded by prison territories. According to the results of the research, the concept was to make city attractive for residents and tourists and humane for prisoners so I suggested to build a skyscrap-er - prison. There could live up to 2700 prisoners. Pravieniskes city would belong to residents: historical GULAG buildings would become museums so in this way residents would have work.

The idea was to create “city in house”. It’s like a sandwich - building’s height is not fixed. Ideology of skyscraper was chosen because it is more humane as prisoner see beautiful life: nature, birds, sky, people in freedom.. This could work as the relaxing therapy, also instructive tool for society as prisoners are always visible due to skyscraper silhouette in skyline.

Lithuania has an old tradition of educating its architects. The first department

of architecture was founded back in 1793 at Vilnius University.

Among these, the present-day Deptartment of Architecture of Vilnius Acad-

emy of Arts and its programme stand out through integration of general uni-

versity and specialty (and related engineering fields) subjects with thorough

studies of arts. The methodology of teaching architecture is anchored on con-

nection of general university subjects, subjects in architectural and engineer-

ing field and of visual expression.

The Bachelor’s and Master’s degree study programme Architecture has been

taught by the Department of Architecture since 1995. In 2012, the study pro-

gramme Architecture received an unconditional notification by the European

Commission in Brussels under Article 21(7) of the Directive 2005/36/EC Quali-

fications of Architects.

The Bachelor’s programme is focused on studies in its main field of archi-

tecture, and the graduation leads to the award of Bachelor of Architecture

qualification degree. It also includes study subjects embracing a wider area

(which provide broader intellectual background, not immediately connected

to the content of major studies), they are set by the school and selected by in-

dividual students. The earned academic qualification title leads to careers with

architectural design firms, state and municipal territorial planning institutions,

and qualifies the graduates, under a guidance of a specialist (project manag-

er), to the development of architectural projects for a range of complexity of

buildings and their environment. According to the procedures set forth by the

Lithuanian Government, the alumni may seek qualification certificate of pro-

ject manager after three years of professional practice, subsequently they can

set up their own business of architectural design.

The purpose of the master’s degree programme is to train MA architects of

high professional level capable of performing independent scientific research

and using it to justify their practical activities. The completion of the second

cycle studies enables an MA graduate in architecture to continue scientific ac-

tivities, teach at a higher education institution, speeds up the process of pro-

fessional attestation and increases competitiveness on the market of architec-

tural design. Masters in Architecture can continue their studies by undertaking

the third cycle to gain a degree of Doctor of Arts.

A center of ritual - building complex, providing committal, ecological incineration and columbarium assistance. Increased pace of life in XXI century does not allow a man to prepare for potential imminent death. Everyone of us has given a thought to this topic at least once and are well aware that life is finite and death is inevitable. The hardest part, however, is to handle everything in a short period of time while spending as much as one can with a kindred spirit. Blueprint is designed for three mourning phases: distress, nostalgia, reconciliation. Functional units - three organically related procedures: prepa-ration, ritual observance, akin empathy. With a help of modern illumination, volumes are shaped, imparting spiritual existence beyond substantial reality boundaries.

This project works with a post-traumatic area of Beirut, which has an archaeological opening created during bombings of ’64 and ’73. The concept of how to revive the site and patch up the city is to superimpose di!erent structures with di!erent functions on top of each other. By using this method we can reflect on the multilayered context, while dividing a huge task into smaller pieces. The project has three main layers:

The bottom layer has the archaeological ruins which are exhibited but not „touched“.The middle layer is an interpretation of the passed historic structures.

The top layer is a completely new lightweight translucent tent structure, which reacts to the bottom layers while keeping its modern appearance.

Kaunas city architectural environment has the uniqueness of the numerous

di!erent periods of significant stylistic features that reflect the diverse evolu-

tion of Lithuanian architecture. Exceptional situation of nature and the sym-

biosis of rich architecture, can provide the perfect environment for subsist-

ence and academic architectural studies, as well as for active student life and

organization of cultural events.

Vilnius Academy of Arts Faculty of Kaunas (KF) continues the interwar

tradition of Kaunas Art School and aims to become an integral part of

the education and culture in European Union. Department of Architecture also

actively participates in helping to achieve main strategic aims of Vilnius Acad-

emy of Fine Arts Faculty of Kaunas.

KF Architecture Department is constantly improving study programs with

regards to passed on traditions of the school and the challenges of the con-

temporary architecture. Department is applying innovative teaching methods,

helps to develop professional skills of the students, their creativity, ability to

reflect, identify the position of their creative activity and motivate it.

Bachelor and Master students traditionally begin a school year with the

week – long creative workshop. Students from di!erent years gather in mixed

groups, therefore, first year students can adapt to the new academic envi-

ronment and academic life easier, because they participate in workshops with

other first year and older students. The workshop concludes in an exhibition

that students have to organize and where they have to present their ideas.

The study program is structured in the way that at least one coursework task

should include working in small groups. This method of study develops crea-

tive skills, ability to work in a team, and promotes leadership abilities.

For over a decade students of Kaunas Architecture Faculty have been regu-

larly participating in international architectural competitions and are often

nominated for their work.

In the faculty that consists of a small number of students creative multi-

dimensional collaboration between di!erent specialties is frequent and self-

contained. This unique environment broadens their horizons and encourages

creativity. Architects that have developed their abilities in this kind of excep-

tional environment are competitive and well-prepared for their future job.

RIGA TECHNICAL UNIVERSITYFACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE AND

URBAN PLANNING

Founded in 1862, RTU is the first technical university in the Baltic countries.

It o!ers full-time or part-time studies in Architecture, Engineering Sciences,

Natural and Environmental Sciences as well as in Engineering Economics.

Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning provides architectural education

at all levels of undergraduate and graduate education as well as undertakes

scientific research. The number of students is about 300 and the yearly number

of graduates is about 45 at Bachelor level and 45 at higher levels. 31 teachers

are involved in the study process.

The Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning consists of Department of

History and Theory of Architecture, Department of Architecture and Urban De-

sign and Department of Fine Arts.

Since the 1990s the university has been active in attracting foreign sta! and

students, and creating joint-degree programmes and international mobility

projects. RTU has more than 400" international agreements with foreign uni-

versities and is participating in Erasmus+, many networks and projects.

The Bachelor’s programme in Architecture establishes the foundation in aca-

demic matters and competence in research leading to architectural design. At

this level, within three and a half years, competence in primary professional

matters is attained, which allows students to continue education in the two-

year program of Architecture and Urban Planning.

Studies in Architect’s degree programme prepare qualified specialists in ar-

chitecture who can independently work in design o#ces and state and local

government institutions. Architect can undertake appropriate research work,

be a knowledgeable professional critic, prepare complete project implemen-

tation plans, and also provide expert’s testimony and consulting services. Af-

ter graduation from the Architect’s programme and three years of supervised

practice architect may apply for a professional Certificate that authorises for

independent practice. Being notified in the European Directive On the Recog-

nition of Professional Qualifications the Architect’s diploma of RTU provides its

keeper professional recognition into the member states of the EU.

The three-semester Master’s programme is to achieve competence by spe-

cialists in scientific and research work in the realm of architecture and city

In proposed project there have been resolved two types of buildings, each one on di!erent side of the canal. First is building with combined func-tions, starting from shops and o#ce areas, and finishing with a!ordable living space. Second is apartment building with shops and boat docks in first level, and apartaments in other. There have been made vertical gardens on the buildings to create methaphore of city jungle in the area.

In an attempt to find solutions for undeveloped low quality recreational spaces and to contribute to developing Riga as a compact sustainable city, the author has chosen Lu-cavsala as a territory for development of recreation and environmental education space. The aim of the project was to work out a new approach to Lucavsala’s sustainable de-velopment based on the existing allotment garden structure. For this purpose, new per-maculture and a greenhouse complex, as well as a wide range of recreational space programmes are integrated into the existing landscape to form a continuous structure.

Pursuing the idea of Lucavsala to become a place for recreation and environmental education, a building of environmental education centre for children was designed. The building is a self-su#cient floating structure, which forms a dynamic city component and is the first step in developing Riga as a dynamic city.

ESTONIAN ACADEMY OF ARTS / FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE /

Estonian Academy of Arts (EAA, est. 1914) is the only one of the six public uni-

versities in Estonia providing higher education in fine arts, design, architecture,

media, visual studies, art culture, and conservation. The Academy consists of

four faculties: Faculty of Architecture, Faculty of Design, Faculty of Fine Arts

and Faculty of Art and Culture. In addition to active study and research activi-

ties, EAA also o!ers lifelong learning opportunities through the Open Acad-

emy. Currently there are more"than 1 200 students enrolled in the Academy.

EAA is striving to become a leading international centre of"innovation in the

field of visual and material culture. The Estonian Academy of Arts collaborates

with more than a hundred universities worldwide and belongs to several in-

ternational higher education networks. The lecturers and instructors are pro-

fessionals in their field — internationally recognised artists, architects, design-

ers, historians, and scientists. Visiting lecturers from universities in Estonia and

abroad are regular guests.

Faculty of Architecture is the focal point of Estonian architecture educa-

tion and the centre of competence in the creative disciplines related to built

environments, including furniture design, interior architecture, architecture,

landscape architecture, urban planning and design. The Faculty of Architec-

ture consists of three departments: the Department of Architecture and Urban

Planning, the Department of Interior Architecture and Furniture Design and the

Department of Urban Studies.

The ambition of the faculty is to provide a very broad field of architecture

education, in the best sense of the word, by paying equal"attention to the de-

sign of interiors, buildings, spaces between them and the larger"environments

where they are located. Architecture and interior architecture are closely relat-

ed, with significant overlapping and joint projects within the curriculum. When

studying architecture, it is also"possible to study landscape architecture as a

subsidiary subject. Urban Studies is"an international English-language Master

level curriculum, which is based on research concerning the functioning of

modern cities, from the perspective of their users, major participants, decision-

makers and planners.

Eesti Kunstiakadeemia (asut. 1914) on ainus arhitektuuri-, disaini-, kunsti- ja

kunstikultuurialast kõrgharidust andev avalik-õiguslik ülikool Eestis. Eesti Kuns-

tiakadeemias on neli teaduskonda:"vabade kunstide teaduskond,"arhitektuuri-

teaduskond,"disainiteaduskond" ja kunstikultuuri teaduskond."Elukestva õppe

võimalusi pakub"Avatud Akadeemia. 2014 aastal õpib EKA-s üle 1200 üliõpilase.

EKA eesmärgiks on saada juhtivaks rahvusvaheliseks innovatsiooni kesku-

seks visuaalse ja materiaalse kultuuri vallas. Akadeemial on tihedad sidemed

rahvusvaheliselt tunnustatud kunstnikud, arhitektid, disainerid, ajaloolased,

teadlased. Regulaarselt kutsutakse erinevatelt erialadelt õpetama külalislekto-

reid partnerülikoolidest Eestist ja väliskõrgkoolidest.

EKA Arhitektuuriteaduskond on Eesti arhitektuurihariduse keskpunkt ja oluli-

sim kompetentsikeskus kõigis tehiskeskkonda loovates"distsipliinides hõlmates

mööblidisaini, sisearhitektuuri, arhitektuuri,"maastikuarhitektuuri, linnaehituse

ja planeerimise. Arhitektuuriteaduskond koosneb kolmest osakonnast: arhitek-

tuuri ja linnaplaneerimise osakond, sisearhitektuuri ja mööblidisaini osakond

ning urbanistika osakond.

Arhitektuuriteaduskonna ambitsiooniks on pakkuda võimalikult laia arhitek-

olemuselt väga lähedased erialad, milles on stuudiumi jooksul olulisi kattuvusi

spetsialiseerumine maastikuarhitektuurile. Urbanistika õppekava on rahvusva-

The master’s thesis centers on North-Tallinn a district in the city of Tallinn. The goal of the project is to re-activate the cityscape and alleviate the physical and mental borders in North-Tallinn by introducing various interventions to the neglected and anonymous area. Project focuses on the area at the end of the Kopli freight station, one of the many border-like situations that characterize the whole district.

The proposed strategy is to organize the space with new elements, to highlight the extant qualities and create conditions that inspire interaction with the city. The spatial elements that are added to the environment mark and frame the spaces enclosed while leaving residents with room for interpreting the intended purpose of the created spaces.

TOOTMINE LINNAKESKKONNAS. ALTERNATIIVSE VÕRGUSTATUD TOOTMISE KATSELABOR TALLINNA KESKLINNAS

PRODUCTION IN THE CITY. EXPERIMENTAL LABORATORY FOR ALTERNATIVE NETWORKING PRODUCTION IN CENTRAL TALLINN

This thesis project investigates resource and energy crises, in an ambitious attempt to envision a change in the existing system. Industrial production and global freight sys-tems are closely related to energy and ecology issues. What if all of our stu! wouldn’t be produced in China and shipped worldwide? Could physical fabrication be reestablished as a vital part of the city fabric?

Many theoreticians claim that an alternative distributed local manufacturing is pos-sible. Instead of one huge centralized production, a network of interconnected but autonomous smaller agents are more e#cient and self-sustainable. This idea is also supported by the developments in fabrication technologies like additive manufacturing, CNC-mills and many other robotics. These are actively used by universities and Maker-movements to explore the possibilities they open up.

The project is a vision of such production-node in a city.

Rail Balticu terminali rajamisel ei näi Tallinn lõpp-peatusena otstarbekas. Oluliseks ku-juneb ühendus ühistranspordi terminalide vahel linnaruumis. Nii oleks võimalik Tallinna käsitleda kui üht suurt transpordisõlme, mille erinevad terminalid asuvad linnaruumis, mitte suletud kompleksi erinevates osades nii on reisijal võimalik kogeda Tallinna mil-jööd. Läbi üistranspordi koridori linnasüdamesse paigutamise pakub lõputöö põhimõt-telisi tüüplahendusi sarnastel puhkudel linnaruumi parendamiseks, pannes rõhu jala-käijale, kes on suure tõenäosusega aktiivsem ühistranspordi ja linnaruumi kasutaja kui autos istuv läbisõitja, mis omakorda elavdab ärilist tegevust ka väljaspool suuri kauban-duskeskusi.

When contemplating the development of Rail Baltic, a mammoth terminal in Tallinn doesn’t seem as the most e#cient concept. Rather, the city itself should be seen as a vast transportation hub, where terminals are not be crammed into a single structure but situate naturally and fuse readily with their surroundings – this would allow the passen-ger to truly experience the milieu of the city and put emphasis on the pedestrian, by far a more active agent than the automobile commuter, which would also work towards enlivening the commercial aspects outside of shopping centres. By way of establishing this corridor of public transportation into the hearth of the city, this paper proposes core solutions and guidelines applicable for similar instances of urban planning.

Buildings organic formula and mate-rial are outstanding in the environment. Laminated timber joists and high glass facades form a grandiose and cozy whole.
