The U.S. Army ROTC 4-Year Scholarship To attract the best and brightest high school and college students, Army ROTC offers merit-based scholarships for use at any of our nearly 300 host colleges and universities, or through partnership agreements with over a thousand other schools. Army ROTC scholarships cover tuition and fees OR room and board, and they provide an allotment to pay for books as well as a monthly stipend of spending money that increases each year. (Stipends are paid for each academic month that the scholarship is in effect, for up to ten months each year.) Army ROTC scholarships do not pay flight fees. The 4-Year Scholarship application is contained in this booklet and allows you to select up to ten schools where you would like to use the scholarship. Once you are offered a scholarship, you must use it at the school identified in your offer letter. For information on 3- and 2-year scholarships, see the Professor of Military Science (PMS) on campus at the school you are attending. Remember – if you’re

not selected to receive a 4-year scholarship at this time, you could be eligible for a 4- or 3-year scholarship when you get on campus! Our scholarships pay full college tuition and educational fees, OR room and board (capped at $10k), whichever is chosen by the student. Many schools provide additional incentives for scholarship winners, which may include academic credit for ROTC classes, etc. Many of these incentives are listed by school at www.goarmy.com/rotc . The 4-Year Scholarship allows qualified and competitive students to arrive on campus with far fewer financial concerns than most students face, and provides a ready avenue of academic and extracurricular support through the Department of Military Science. The benefits of an Army ROTC scholarship go far beyond financial. By taking Army ROTC, students develop skills that will help them better survive the rigors of college life, and prepare them for future success both in their initial military service and beyond into civilian positions.

Cadets and Officers

Army ROTC cadets are scholars, athletes and leaders. Our scholarship winners are well-rounded students with good grades and strong potential to serve in leadership positions. More than half of them have held office in either one of their classes or in the student body. Most are National Honor Society members, and a few are editors of school publications. Many are members of school, church, or private clubs and other organizations, and others are varsity letter winners and varsity team captains.

name a few. Talk to the PMS and the cadets at each campus you visit – ask the cadets about their Army ROTC experience and ask the cadre about their experience as junior officers. You’ll find that you’re in good company with this group and that Army ROTC is truly one of the best leadership development programs in the world.

Army ROTC is looking for achievers with broad interests, leadership ability, and a demonstrated willingness to take on and overcome challenges.

Special Scholarship Programs

We also look for academic excellence. Most of our scholarship awardees fall in the top 25% of their class. These top achievers score on an average, between 1050 and 1350 on their SAT and between 22 and 30 on their ACT.

Nursing Army ROTC is an elective taken while studying for your nursing degree, and it provides a foundation for achievement, including leadership and management skills critical to success in the profession. Army ROTC provides outstanding clinical opportunities in the form of the Nurse Summer Training Program (NSTP). NSTP introduces cadets to the roles, responsibilities and expectations of an ANC officer, and provides progressive experience and leadership opportunities in a clinical setting, working side by side with an ANC officer in a medical treatment facility.

The pursuit of excellence continues with cadets on campus. Army ROTC cadets are encouraged to participate in a variety of campus activities, including competitive varsity sports and student organizations. The Army benefits most by commissioning officers with a variety of backgrounds and a diversity of experiences. An Army ROTC battalion (the group of all cadets enrolled in the program at a particular school) is a group of students from many backgrounds, some who have been selected as scholarship winners and many who are just taking the courses to best prepare for the future.

Upon graduation and successful completion of the Registered Nurse licensure exam, you begin your professional career. As an ANC officer, you have competitive promotion opportunities, challenging leadership positions and advanced educational options immediately upon arriving at your first assignment. These training programs prepare you for practice in a chosen specialty area.

In addition to the required five-week camp, cadets may choose to participate in a wide variety of Army- sponsored leadership development programs during the summer, including skills training programs like Army ROTC has an excellent 2-, 3-, and 4-year

nursing scholarship program available to students pursuing a nursing degree, for use at accredited Bachelor of Science/Arts in Nursing schools and colleges.

Airborne School and internships with Army agencies, in disciplines from ecology to medicine. In their final year, cadets compete for their choice of branch assignment based on their order of merit – a score which encompasses their academic standing, battalion ranking, and performance at camp. There are seventeen Army branches to select from,

SAT & ACT enclosed list of Army ROTC Colleges and Universities. When taking your college entrance exams, you

should list Army ROTC as a test score recipient. The Army ROTC code for SAT is 0454; the code for ACT is 1676. You should also list as recipients

those schools at which you are planning to apply; the schools you are listing in this application. You may not be required to list your social security number (SSN) on the college entrance exams, however, it is recommended that you do so for proper posting of your scores. Experience has shown that many applicants have been disqualified because they failed to allow sufficient time for processing test results. SAT and ACT test results require approximately four weeks to process; do not wait for test results to mail your application forms! By listing Army ROTC as a test score recipient, your scores will automatically be furnished to our office. Test scores provided in this manner require no further verification. Also, test scores reflected on official transcripts require no further verification either. In order to accept scores provided from any other source, you must personally submit those scores to the address on page 1.

Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU) To further develop the diversity of the officer corps, Army ROTC reserves a limited number of scholarships for those students who desire to attend an HBCU. To apply, note your interest in block 22 on page 2 of the application.

SAT and ACT Writing tests are required; however are used subjectively for the board at this time. No whole person score is associated with the writing tests.

Contact your guidance counselor to determine test dates and registration dates and requirements. The Army cannot schedule or administer these tests, nor can we initiate a request for scores. If you are living in an overseas area, you may require additional processing time and assistance. We have provided the agency addresses below for your convenience. Medical Examination Your medical condition is not a consideration in the selection of scholarship winners; however, all winners must be medically qualified in order to enroll as scholarship cadets and receive benefits. Individuals selected as scholarship finalists will be contacted and scheduled for a medical examination by the Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board (DODMERB). DODMERB will normally contact students via letter or postcard announcing an appointment date and time or requesting that you contact a contracted physician to make an appointment. If you are unable to report to the examination as scheduled, you must notify DODMERB immediately to be rescheduled. You are responsible for your own transportation, lodging and meals related to this examination. If you do not receive appointment information within six weeks after being notified that your application has been provided to your school choices, contact DODMERB at 1-800-841-2706. As part of your medical evaluation, you must weigh less than the maximum allowable weight for your height. See page 18 for the allowable weight for scholarship recipients. Results of the medical examination will be furnished directly to you by DODMERB as well as to Army ROTC. Upon receipt of your results, you may want to contact us at the address on page 1, or e-mail us at [email protected] , to ensure that we have received a copy. You must comply as quickly as

possible with any requirements to provide additional medical documents or to schedule a consultation in a particular area, in order to avoid delays in the scholarship processing.

GOOD LUCK!

The President’s Challenge Physical Fitness Test Events

Curl-ups (or partial curl-ups) (Sit-Ups) This event measures abdominal strength and endurance. Curl-ups test Have student lie on cushioned, clean surface with knees flexed and feet about 12 inches from buttocks. Partner holds feet. Arms are crossed with hands placed on opposite shoulders and elbows held cto chest. Keeping this arm position, student raises the trunk curlingto touch elbows to thighs and then lowers the back to the floor so thathe scapulas (shoulder blades) touch the floor, for one curl-up. To start, a timer calls out the signal "Ready? Go!" and begins timing student for one minute. The student stops on the word "stop."

Curl-ups tip Instruct helpers to count aloud the number of repetitions.

Curl-ups scoring "Bouncing" off the floor is not permitted. The curl-up should be counted only if performed correctly. Partial curl-ups test Have student lie on cushioned, clean surface with knees flexed and feet about 12 inches from buttocks. Do not hold or anchor the feet. Arms are extended forward with fingers resting on the legs and pointing toward the knees. The student's partner is behind the head with hands cupped under the student's head. The student being tested curls up slowly sliding the fingers up the legs until the fingertips touch the knees, then back down until the head touches the partner's hands. The curl-ups are done to a metronome (or audio tape, clapping, drums) with one complete curl-up every three seconds, and are continued until the student can do no more in rhythm (has not done the last three in rhythm) or has reached the target number for the test. Partial curl-ups tip Make sure that the participant's arm is fully extended from the starting position. Partial curl-ups scoring Record only those curl-ups done with proper form and in rhythm. Partial curl-ups rationale Done slowly with knees bent and feet not held, the partial curl-up is a better indicator of abdominal strength and endurance than the timed curl-ups.

The President’s Challenge Physical Fitness Test Events

Pull-ups (or right angle push-ups or flexed-arm hang) (Push-Ups) This event measures upper body strength and endurance. Pull-ups testing Student hangs from a horizontal bar at a height the student can hang from with arms fully extended and feet free from floor, using either an overhand grasp (palms facing away from body) or underhand grip (palms facing toward body). Small students may be lifted to starting position. Student raises body until chin clears the bar and then lowers body to full-hang starting position. Student performs as many correct pull-ups as possible. Pull-ups tip Spend as little time hanging from the bar beforehand as possible, the extra time on the bar may reduce the number of pull-ups performed. Discourage any kicking of the legs or swinging of the body as this may also decrease the number of repetitions. Pull-ups scoring Pull-ups should be done in a smooth rather than jerky motion. Kicking or bending the legs is not permitted and the body must not swing during the movement. Right angle push-ups testing The student lies face down on the mat in push-up position with hands under shoulders, fingers straight, and legs straight, parallel, and slightly apart, with the toes supporting the feet. The student straightens the arms, keeping the back and knees straight, then lowers the body until there is a 90-degree angle at the elbows, with the upper arms parallel to the floor. A partner holds her / his hand at the point of the 90-degree angle so that the student being tested goes down only until her / his shoulder touches the partner's hand, then back up. The push-ups are done to a metronome (or audio tape, clapping, drums) with one complete push-up every three seconds, and are continued until the student can do no more in rhythm (has not done the last three in rhythm) or has reached the target number for the PPFA.

Right angle push-ups tip As with the pull-up, spend as little time in the starting position beforehand in order to increase the number of repetitions. Any extra movement may also decrease the number of repetitions. Right angle push-ups scoring Record only those push-ups done with proper form and in rhythm. Right angle push-ups rationale The student's body weight has less effect on right angle push-ups than it does on pull-ups. This makes right angle push-ups a better indicator of the range of strength and endurance found in students, whereas many are unable to do any pull-ups. Pull-ups remain an option for students at higher levels of strength and endurance. Flexed-arm hang testing Using either an overhand grasp (palms facing away from body) or underhand grip (palms facing toward body), student assumes flexed-arm hang position with chin clearing the bar. Students may be lifted to this position. Student holds this position as long as possible.

The President’s Challenge Physical Fitness Test Events

Flexed-arm hang tip Rather than doing a pull-up to start, lift the participant to the starting position. This decreases any extra exertion and may possibly increase the length of time. Flexed-arm hang scoring Chest should be held close to bar with legs hanging straight. Timing is stopped when student's chin touches or falls below the bar.

Endurance run/walk (1-Mile Run) This event measures heart/lung endurance. Endurance run/walk testing On a safe, one-mile distance, students begin running on the count "Ready? Go!" Walking may be interspersed with running. However, the students should be encouraged to cover the distance in as short a time as possible. Endurance run/walk tip Use a large enough running area so that no more than eight laps are necessary to complete a mile. Help participants learn proper pacing for the mile by having them run at the mile pace for short distances during warm-up time. If you are not using a track that is measured in miles, then you will need to convert from that measurement into miles. Refer to the conversion chart below for converting to miles when using a 400 meter track or 440 yards. Endurance run/walk scoring Always review students' health status before administering this test. Give students ample instruction on how to pace themselves. Allow them to practice running this distance against time, as well as sufficient time for warming up and cooling down before and after the test. Times are recorded in minutes and seconds. Alternative distances for younger children are 1/4 mile for 6-7 years old, and 1/2 mile for 8-9 years old. The same objective and testing procedure are used as with the mile run.

Conversion for Miles

On a 400 meter track 1 mile = 4 laps + 9 meters 3/4 mile = 3 laps + 6.75 meters 1/2 mile = 2 laps + 4.5 meters 1/4 mile = 1 lap + 2.25 meters

On a 440 yard track 1 mile = 4 laps 3/4 mile = 3 laps 1/2 mile = 2 laps 1/4 mile = 1 lap
