Dear business partner! Dear reader! The Baltic Brick and Roof Award was first presented in 2009 and this year we do it second time in WBEE history. As you might know Wienerberger Group started already some years ago with an international Brick Award and due to the fact that much interesting projects have been applied for this award from Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, we have decided to continue with this special Baltic Brick and Roof Award. The large variety of different projects shows the high flexibility of Wienerberger clay products as facing bricks, pavers, roof tiles and hollow bricks, produced of clay, water and fire like in the past, but with new designs and improved technical function to fit to the demands of the future and modern architecture. The purpose of this competition was to find and distinguish the objects, in which usage of ceramic bricks, clay roof tiles, hollow-bricks and clay pavers is done in the best solution in architectural and technical way. The nominating projects are demonstrating the variety of opportunities of ceramics in construction. We hope that reading this brochure is supporting you in creating ideas for new projects. The Baltic Brick and Roof Award 2011 Which are the most fabulous brick structures in Baltic States? Where is possible to see the beauty of ceramic facing bricks, clay roof tiles and clay pavers, which invites you to see and admire also from afar? Where have ceramic facing bricks, clay roof tiles and hollow-bricks or clay pavers been used in an outstanding way in terms of design and technology? The purpose of this competition was finding and distinguishing the objects, in which the usage of ceramic bricks, clay roof tiles, hollow-bricks and clay pavers is done in the best solution in architectural, technical and syntagmatic way. The nominating projects demonstrate variety of opportunities of ceramics in construction.

The criteria for nomination were: • A significant part of the project must consist of at least one of Wienerberger products (as POROTHERM hollow-bricks (clay blocks), TERCA facing bricks, TERCA clay pavers, KORAMIC clay roof tiles);

• The completion date for the project is the year 2004 or later; • All functions are possible: single-family homes, row house, apartment buildings, commercial and industrial buildings, public buildings, square, place, garden, etc.; • New buildings, extensions, and architecturally interesting renovations in brick-buildings as well as created gardens and squares will be included in the evaluation. • One and the same project can be in two different categories, but nominated only in one category.

The prices were divided between the following categories of the best projects: • Facing bricks and clay blocks: residential building (single-family house, row house, apartment buildings); • Facing bricks and clay blocks: public building (office building, business centre, industrial building, church, school, hospital … );

• Roof covered with clay roofing tiles (residential building or other buildings); • Squares, places or gardens of clay pavers. The price for each category was 2000 Euros. The decisions were made by a group of chosen international specialists in January 2010. The jury consisted of seven members: Andres Kurg (Estonia), Guntis Grabovskis (Latvia), Gintaras Čaikauskas (Lithuania) and Siiri Vallner – one of the architects of Estonian project, which was vote in to the illustrated architecture book “brick’10” and from Wienerberger team Eduard Rõzov (Estonia), Dainius Balciunas (Lithuania) and Dmitrijs Gavrilovs from Latvia. In addition to the winners of The Baltic Brick and Roof Award 2011 the jury have selected one special prize and three additional projects, which all will get a chance to be nominated for the international Brick Award 2012 organized by the Wienerberger Group.

All these eight projects will be presented in this publication.

The winner of facing bricks and clay blocks residential building category Multi residential house in Vilnius, Lithuania

Photos by Saulius Paukštys Description of project: The building is located in nice and quiet area of Vilnius city, nearby Karoliniskes park. The represented three-storey building is the first one of a multi-residential complex planned to be build. It is a 115 apartment house with underground parking. The building has a total area of 18 045 m2. The project estimated value is 15,7 million Euro. Comments of jury: Andres Kurg: This architecturally straightforward building achieves its main effect due to a very clever dialogue with the context. The all-brick U shaped complex is situated in the vicinity of a Soviet-time prefabricated housing area, but not so much to counterpose itself to it, but attempting a redefinition of the area. The brick as a “warm” material works in contrast to the previous concrete and provides at the same time an unpretentious, yet solid living environment.

Gintaras Čaikauskas: The project has a moderate contextuality, typological clarity. Ceramic decoration helps to highlight the complex unity and to express the contextual idea of urban and architectural transition from the intensive city to the natural environment.

Siiri Vallner: Peaceful and cosy living environment is created. Housing complex is built next to the soviet time microraion and it helps to raise reputation and living quality in the whole area. The nominee of facing bricks and clay blocks residential building category The Special price and additional project to Brick Award 2012 Single-family house in Vilnius, Lithuania

Photos by Tadas Balčiunas Description of project: Te house belongs for three generations of one family. One apartment is for young parents with their children, another is for the seniors. Facades are composed of two contrasting materials: blank walls of rough clinker and clear glossy glass.

Comments of jury: Andres Kurg: This single-family residential house has a compact exterior where the surfaces of the window-openings are well balanced with the dark brick wall surfaces, forming an overall exciting sculptural volume. It follows contemporary international architectural language, yet manages to maintain a regional quality.

Gintaras Čaikauskas: The unique shape of sculptural form, an unusual volume of residential building project provides an expression of individuality and expressiveness. Ceramic brick facade decoration formed a solid, single, memorable, contrasting to the environment character of the building.

Siiri Vallner : Little deviations from simple box shape and precise detailing characterises this building. Together these features create an exciting sense of movement for the facades. The winner of facing bricks and clay blocks public building category Flower shop in Jelgava, Latvia

Photos by Juris Lasis Description of project: Flower shop and office building in 2 stories in the centre of Jelgava, near the neo-gothic church of St. John. In the facade typical red brick is used to blend into the historic surroundings. Massive brick buttresses are the response to the church architecture, seen across the street. Comments of jury: Andres Kurg: The flower shop in red brick is clearly an endeavour to enter into a dialogue with the traditional building material used in Jelgava: not only the nearby St John church is of this material, but also the Soviet-time housing refers to the same context. The building is sculptural and attracts attention in this spot, and the role of brick is defining in this attractive character of the building.

Gintaras Čaikauskas : The project has a characteristic symptoms of small city environment, demonstrates possibilities of simple and complex context problems solution in the local and broadest sense. Clinker brick pilasters with the help of little effort has established an appropriate relationship between the new architecture and historical heritage, in addition to the surrounding buildings.

Siiri Vallner: Expressive and catchy building has something inherently Latvian. Building gets along well with its neighbours (neo-gothic church and 70s apartment buildings) and gives a new fresh look for the whole area.

The nominee of facing bricks and clay blocks public building category Additional project to Brick Award 2012 Administrative Buildings Complex with Shops and Restaurants in Klaipeda, Lithuania

Photos by Ramūnas Atas Description of project: Two, three and nine floors buildings with two levels underground garage and superposed roof buildings are regenerating the old urbanictic structure. For facades composition are used surfaces of bricks and glass. The buildings are used decorated by bricks and differently. The higher parts are decorated with horizontal bricks and lower parts- horizontal bricks ecorations with vertical lines of bricks. The Baltic sea, Kuršiu Neria national park are nicely seen from the higher parts of the building. The total area of buildings / 18 008 sq.m The total volume of the buildings / 76 342 cubic m. Comments of jury: Andres Kurg: A contemporary office building with careful detailing, where the brick surfaces are skillfully devised to fit the overall composition and give a specific character to the building. With office buildings, there is a danger to fall into anonymous international stereotypes, here this is avoided and the structure sits well in the overall urban fabric.

Gintaras Caikauskas: The building of a modern, contemporary architectural design is directly linked to the urban environment, it clearly reflects the typological purposes, forming a distinctive face. Ceramic facing bricks allows to express the contextual characteristic of coastal land, ensure good performance and durability of the surface resistance to aggressive coastal weather.

Siiri Vallner:

Different building heights and varying brick layout articulates huge building volume. Use of brick guarantees good interior climate for the office building.

The winner of roof covered with roofing tiles category National Golf Resort Clubhouse Stančiai Village in Klaipeda district, Lithuania

Photos by Ramūnas Atas Description of project: Unique house architecture corresponds to the natural surroundings and reflects the purpose of the building. House architecture is interpreted by using traditional decoration materials. The clubhouse is built on the slope of the valley where the golf courses are located so that the visitors can enjoy watching golf courses from the clubhouse. It is a two-floor building with basement, open terraces, and pitched roof. For facade decorations two types of bricks were used – Dark Mazaruni Rood Sand WF (95%) and Bright Etna VB WF (5%), the bricks are mixed. Roof covered with Pottelberg 30 tiling, coloured rustic. The total area of the house – 1420 m2, volume – 6630 m3. Comments of jury: Andres Kurg: The task of this building is to provide a traditional and reliable image to its visitors and this is done with the help of dark brick and roof tiling. It is also a work of remarkably good quality, which adds to the overall architectural idea and image of the building.

Gintaras Caikauskas: The main feature of the project – reserved aspiration of the regional image. Provident, archetypical shape of the house helps to create minimalistic individuality of conceptual emphasizes the traditional use of clay roof tiles.

Siiri Vallner: Precise detailing animates facades of this simple building with archetypical shape. Not only roof is worth highlighting. Good compatibility of all its parts is what makes this building excellent.

Photos by Simonas Prikockis Description of project : Plot size / 2554 m2 The total area of residental house / 445m2 There are two buildings in the parcel: residental house with swimming pool and anciliary building with garage. Both buildings finished with Koramic Datura tiles, solid wood frames and trespa panels. Comments of jury: Andres Kurg: A two-part residential building combines different materials in an unexpected way, interpreting vernacular architectural features within a contemporary idiom. Although the use of roof tiles to cover the whole volume of the bilding is a feature now used quite often in contemporary architecture, it plays here a significant role next to the white “fachwerk” volume and the sculptural concrete balustrade of the balcony.

Cintaras Čaikauskas: The contrast between separated different volumes creates the unic composition of an individual residential house in a particular form of artistic ideas intrigue, surprise and facade of the building provides regionality, express the local traditions and continuity of contextual sense. Ceramic decoration design expression provides a sense of monumentality, special decorative materials reflects current trends in architecture.

Siiri Vallner: Design of the private house adopts ideas from traditional architecture in a clever way. These motifs are mixed with contemporary materials and shapes. Result is contemporary and timeless simultaneously. The winner of squares, places or gardens of clay paver’s category Design for Aida and Põhja streets in Pärnu, Estonia

Photos by Kati Vaas Description of project: The aim of the project is to organize public space in the Pärnu new city centre developing area. The project area consists of streets and squares between the concert hall, the museum and new shopping centres. Aida Street is planned to become a new pedestrian axis between the bus station and the yacht harbour. Landscaping project’s intention is to change the new big-scale open space into a more exciting and meaningful area for its users, revealing historical layers and amending physical connections with the rest of the city. The spatial concept is to connect different loose parts of the “new city” by the site’s history. Wooden log as former main trading article is the key element for the design of whole area. With black half-bond laid clinker bricks the historical river area has been marked with sunken logs in the water surface. Comments of jury: Andres Kurg: The design of Aida street in Pärnu is a bold solution for a pavement near a new concert hall and in the vicinity of the river. The asymmetrically placed concrete details that interrupt the continuous surface of the tile pavers could be seen as a pattern that enlivens the public space, but it also carries a conceptual dimension, referring to log shipment

along the river in the past. Thus it is a clever way to produce new layers of meaning in a central urban space that has so far been on the background but now is becoming actively used. Gintaras Caikauskas: Cosy and modern public space in a small town was constructed on the original, poetic concept of the river raft floating image. Layers of historical and contemporary sense of their treatment, and the integrity of the urban, social relevance - professionally realized the fundamental values of the project. Ceramic materials enabled a delicate detailing, the solutions are based on the motivation to achieve completeness of the square elements.

Siiri Vallner: Successful design brings a sense of human scale and friendliness into new city centre. Meaningful space is created - link between history and future. With simple interventions exciting streetscape is created where all kinds of different uses are possible.
