The Best of the Best & The Worst of the Worst!
I truly love getting and giving gifts. I love the way it makes me
feel and the way it makes other
people feel! When asked what
the best and worst I was
automatically like, “Uh, how
in the world am I going to
decipher that?” Thinking more
about it now, I think the best
gift I have ever received was a
Barbie Jeep that I got for like
my 6th birthday. Oh I just
loved it! It was bright pink
with purple flowers all over it,
it screamed girly girl! I suppose the worst gift I got, as much
as I loved it, was my first iPhone. It became something I was
on constantly. I definitely spent way more time on it than I
should have! Truth be told, I don’t really think I’ve received a
“bad” gift!
Taylor, a junior, says, “The
best gift I have ever gotten
was my new fan called a
Vornado! It’s SO loud and
awesome! I LOVE IT!
Now, the worst
gift would
have to be this
little “Barbie”
vet. It wasn’t
even a Barbie
though. It was
just this weird
purple lego
looking thing.
It was supposedly a “hair dresser” theme thing. I
honestly threw it in the trash right after they gave
it to me. In my defense, I was in second grade
and I am pretty sure the girl just got it out of her
toy-box! Ridiculous! Obviously my mom made
me wait until school was over and the girl left
before I could get rid of it.
Play Ball!
It truly is the most wonderful time of the year! On their road
to the gold ball, the Deer Creek-Lamont Lady Eagles have
came out with an aggressive start to the year! With a two big
wins at their back entering the Pond Creek-Hunter Tourna-
ment, they came out with 4th Place only losing to OBA and
Pond Creek-Hunter, who ended up winning the whole thing!
Going back to before the PCH Tournament, the Lady Eagles
took over impressive wins against Cherokee and Dover. The
girls showed their skills from the 3 point line and driving the
lane! Caroline, a sophomore at DCLA, is starting point guard
for the girls this year. She talks about how the season is going
so far. “To say the least, I feel like we have improved greatly
from last year. This, to me, says a lot about how our season
will go. We lost only one starter last year, so we have a very
well meshed team. In the games coming up, I expect for my-
self to drive the lane and make solid passes. For us as a team,
I really would like to see our team set a good tone on the
court and to score more. Our coach is really big on hitting
from all spots on the court, but the 3 point line is where he
likes us to hit strongest from.”
The Eagles put in a lot of hours on their own
as well as in practice led by Coach Jason
Collins. This is a coach that is big on being
in shape. “Something we hear from coach
frequently is that we won’t ever lose to a
team from them being in more shape than
us. So to say he is big on running is an un-
derstatement. That definitely isn’t the worst
part of practice, that would have to be listen-
ing to Coach’s jokes that aren’t that funny
(only joking...kind of).”
As you can see, the Lady Eagles are working
hard to find their place in this years rank-
ings. Right now, they are ranked at 24th and
their goal as a team is to work their way to-
wards 15th at the least. We, as a community,
are very excited to see where this season leads! Keep follow-
Taking the Opportunity From the Best to the Worst of Gifts
There has been gifts that made people so happy once they received them, but there
has been horrible gifts that made people cry as well. This is not about Christmas
gifts but about receiving gifts in general. William, a good friend, told me about his
best and worst gift ever. Very interesting what he received, so I’ll tell you. The
worst gift William ever received was the gift of speech, he says that he doesn’t
know if his words will hurt or help those around him. His best gift though is life.
He was given a life by his parents, and he cherishes that.
That was the gifts my friend William was given, now I’ll tell you about the best and
worst gifts I ever. The best gift I have ever received is knowledge. i\It is power to
me, and it is a needed thing in this world. Something some people don’t cherish or
view as needed. The worst gift ever is probably socks. I greatly dislike them
actually as gifts. I do wear socks of course, but still not something you want as a
gift. That’s a bit about the gifts I’ve received, and my good friend William telling
me about the best and worst gifts ever. Hope your gifts are the best this season!
The Lights of Jingle Bell Hill
The Deer Creek-Lamont Elementary school always hosts a Christmas program
every year, and it’s a blast! The titles to all the programs are
different of course. Every year there are different songs and a
short story to it. Also, there is a few lead parts that the older
kids are assigned. This year the skit was The Lights of Jingle Bell
Hill. This program takes place in Jingle Bell Hill, as the annual
holiday contest is being hosted. Each year, the citizens who
reside on Candy Cane Lane try to win the “Best Lighting Contest”
award, but there is always that one that is a grouch at Jingle Bell Hill known as Scary Larry.
The main leads are: Carly Light as Miss Jingle Jangle (Decorating Chairman), Abbie
Kirkendall as Miss Bell Jangle (Assistant Decorator), Madelyn McReynolds as Betsy Crocker
(Town Bake/Choir Director), Cantrell Compala as Elf Rudolph (“Red Light” Man), Clay Smith
as Scary Larry (Grouchy guy), Emmon Blackburn as Mr. Sorta Bright (Light Bulb Family
Member), Jaxson Silks as Mr. Receptacle (North Pole Gas & Electric), and Clay Lopez as Mr.
Bright Light. There was other roles as well that took part in this fantastic program. The
Kindergarteners played as the Sugar Cookies, 1st and 2nd as Polar Bears, the Candy Canes,
Elves, and Christmas Lights were played by the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th. The whole elementary
sang songs, The Lights of Jingle Bell Hill, Swingin’ Down Candy Cane Lane, Halfway to Christmas, Sh, Sh, Sugar
Cookie, Everybody Has a Light to Shine, Share the Light, and again The Lights of Jingle Bell Hill. Of course we
can’t forget our elementary band which played the songs,
Jingle Bells, Jolly Old St. Nick, and Up on the Housetop.
The program went fabulous and everybody was
delighted by how the elementary preformed. It was a
great night for all.
Molly Blaser, a senior, explained the best and worst gift she
has ever received. This doesn’t necessarily mean that she was
given these gifts for Christmas, but these two things are
something she has been given in the past. We will start off
with the worst gift she’s been given. Molly received a bag
of broken jewelry! The jewelry was all broken and useless.
That is a totally reasonable gift that would be described as
the worst present to receive, but then again jewelry is jew-
elry and it’s the thought that counts! Let’s move on to the
best gift she’s been given. Molly was very excited to get a new phone! She explains that this
phone was the best because it was exactly what she wanted. Who doesn’t love a new phone?
Now, my worst gift is similar to Molly’s worst gift. I had been given a huge amount of jewelry,
but it was the kind of jewelry that looked like it was made in the ancient world. There was two
rings and only the charm piece of the necklace. The charm piece was so big, it was actually
pretty heavy, but I never was given a chain to put it on. My best gift I’ve received would have
to be my early Christmas present this year. I was given an amazing, cute little ring. It is so pret-
ty and would probably have to be the best piece of jewelry I’ve received. This ring means a lot
to me and I am very thankful for it.
Best & Worst
High School Basketball Boys
Reed Reynold’s, a junior explained what has been happening with the Deer Creek-Lamont high school boys basketball team.
One of the things Reed talked about was the recent Pond Creek-Hunter tournament. He stated that the games didn’t turn
out like they were expecting. “We expect to win 2 out the 3 games each tournament. That’s the goal for every tournament
we go to”, Reed stated. This is true for all basketball teams, it’s just a hard fight especially with only 5 players at the time.
There is good things that had come out of this tournament, though. “It always helps to play good teams”, Reed said. Every
chance they get, they want to play good teams. This helps them experience talent coming from another team, which will help
their learning experience in the end. Reed explains that even though the tournament didn’t turn out like expected, there was
good things that came out of it. “We played hard and never gave up”, he stated. That is what every team must do in order to
continue to be a good team.
Reed explains the difficulties and strengths of the basketball team. It’s a tough job for 3 out the 5 starters to come and start
in every single game, when they have never played in a varsity basketball game before. The strengths of the team that help
out a lot would have to be that they’re fast kids. They have the quickness and good shooters on the court to keep the game
going. Reed also stated that the hardest part about playing with 5 boys was playing all 32 minutes with no one to sub in. It’s
tough for all the boys to come out and play with no breaks, and it’s worse when players get into foul trouble. That’s why eve-
ryone has to watch what they’re doing, because if not they’re 3 or 4 boys working so hard and
trying to do 2 jobs at once on the court.
The basketball team predicts that this Friday night game against Kremlin will be a good one, only if
they all play up to their potentials. The game will be a fun one, but every man must do their jobs
completely.
When the DCLA boys return after Christmas break, hopefully things will start going better. Reed
stated that the team has a couple players coming off of the injury list, which will help everyone
out a lot. Let’s hope things get rolling for the basketball team when they return from Christmas
break!
Merry Christmas from Adryan!

The Best or the Worst
The best gift I have ever received would to have to be
on my sixteenth birthday when I got my first truck.
It was a 2004 F-150, I was so excited. My parents and I
had originally looked at it together, but I never
thought that the morning of my birthday they would be
driving it on the driveway to my house. I was barely
awake, but as fast as I could, ran outside in my socks to
give them a hug and tell them thank you.
The worst gift I have ever received would be a dead
fish. My brother had wrapped a dead fish and gave it to
me for Christmas. It was supposed to be a joke, but that
was the first time he had ever really gotten me some-
thing so I was very excited to see it.
Well, when I took the wrapped gift
out of the bag it had a bad smell to
it. Not thinking anything of it, I
continued to open it. Finding a dead
bass inside. My feelings got a little
hurt, but I thought it was more so
funny than a sad thought. I threw it
away, and went on to the next gift.
Brendan, a freshman
at DCLA, also has a
best or worst gift.
The best gift that he
has received so far
was his 1989 vintage
motorcycle. He was
so excited he could not believe what he was
seeing. He has always wanted a motorcycle, and
the fact that his parents got the exact one he
wanted, really warmed his heart.
Brendan has also received a not so good gift.
This gift he received during a game of dirty
Santa. It was the complete set of monkey butt
powder. He was not very happy with the gift, he
had expected something decent because the
package was heavy. But, when he opened the
bag, it was the powder. So, he went home a
The DCLA FFA Christmas Party The Deer Creek - Lamont FFA hosted their annual Christmas party again this year. It
was on Wednesday, November 14. They had a variety of finger foods, played a couple
games, and bonded together as a chapter. The FFA Vice President, Abby, explained
that they put it on every year before Christmas break. She also stated that the FFA
advisor, Mrs. Schmidt, deserves all the credit for putting it on. They played pool, dirty Santa, and ate a lot of food. They
hung out and got to bond together as a chapter. Abby, Austin, and Haley ended up winning the ugly Christmas sweater
contest as the first, second, and third place winners. Their prize was just a little pocket money, which was a fun idea.
Watching everyone’s faces as they opened the gifts they had gotten from dirty Santa, and laughing about it was the
best. Everyone ate some cookies and hung out a little bit longer. After hanging out, talking, listening to music, playing
games, and eating as much as their tummies could hold, everyone left, waving goodbye to the chapter Sentinel,
Breagan, thanking him for letting them use his barn to host the party.
