Hi LWG Community.

Wow, what a week of learning! This term our staff have started unpacking a number of teaching and learning approaches from a text called ‘Clarity in the Classroom’. After we read a chapter as a team there is an expectation that we will use various approaches we

have discussed with our learners. In the Kereru space Nick and Sophia have been focusing on making learning visible by allowing our learners to

understand not only what they are learning but more importantly ‘why’ and being able to talk about this with others. This is powerful stuff! I encourage you to chat to your children each day and ask them to explain to you what they have been learning and why.

On Wednesday Jennie and a group of budding scientists and parents visited Rolleston College for an hour of workshops. This was a great experience for our learners and a perfect example of tuakana–teina (older learners supporting younger learners) which as you know is an important characteristic of our school.

Also, on Wednesday night we had a PTA information evening in the Grove. We had a great turn out of parents who are really keen to become involved which is fantastic. Thank you to Nathan Currie the Chairperson of the GROW West Rolleston group and Sue Jackson the Principal of West Melton who were guest speakers. It was really beneficial to hear their experiences. If you were not able to attend and would like to be involved, please see me next week. The first official meeting will be advertised next week.

All the best to our Cross Country team who compete in the Zones event next week. I really enjoyed our first training run together yesterday. I know they will demonstrate a great deal of GRIT on Monday.

Amazing things happen - Youtube Video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7JdCY-cdgkI This week in Kereru we watched and discussed a Youtube clip called “Amazing things happen”. It is an introduction to autism that aims to raise awareness among young non-autistic audiences, to stimulate understanding and acceptance in future generations. It is intended to be viewed, discussed and shared widely by anyone but especially teachers and parents.

Pataitai Stations Last week the kereru students wrote about the learning that was happening at the Pataitai Stations. The aim is have our learners thinking and reflecting about their learning on a daily basis. We used three questions to help frame our thinking. 1. What am I learning? 2. What am I thinking/wondering? 3. Where could I take this learning next?

ICAS Assessment

ICAS is an independent, skills-based assessment program which recognises and rewards student achievement. Please see https://www.eaa.unsw.edu.au/icas/about for more information.

This year were are offering ICAS assessments in English and Mathematics.

The closing date for entry for English is Friday 23rd June. The sitting date for the test is Tuesday 1st August. The fee for the English assessment is $9.50

The closing date for entry for Mathematics is also Friday 23rd June. The sitting date for the test is Tuesday 15th August. The fee for the Mathematics assessment is $9.50.

Please note that a minimum of 3 entries per subject per school is required. Schools entering fewer than 3 students per subject will be charged the fee applicable to 3 enrolments.

Please email nickg@lemonwoodgrove if you wish to enter your child for the ICAS English or Mathematics assessments.

COUGHS AND COLDS As we know general coughs and colds can start appearing in greater numbers around this time of year. At Lemonwood Grove we are continuing to remind our learners around the importance of hand washing and good hygiene after sports activities, before eating and after going to the toilet. Our learners also have access to hand sanitizer. If your child is sick, can you please keep them at home until they are well enough to return to school.

UNIFORM UPDATE Postie Rolleston and the Warehouse online both have supplies of black thermal tops.

We have an awesome school uniform and we would really appreciate your support around ensuring that our learners are wearing it with pride each day including black socks, tights and black shoes.

At this stage children can wear coloured gloves and hats to school on cold days.

INCREDIBLE YEARS PARENTING PROGRAMME

The Incredible Years Parenting Programme offers support to parents by providing additional skills and strategies to help manage behaviour at home.

What is the Incredible Years Parent programme?

Incredible Years Parent is a 14-session programme for parents of children aged 3–8, which provides parents with skills to better manage children with behavioural problems, creating a home environment that is conducive to positive social and educational outcomes.

The programme is delivered by Ministry of Education, Special Education staff and by 69 non-government organisations (NGOs). Many of these NGOs also provide a range of social services to families funded through the ministries of Health or Social Development or other agencies.

The Ministry of Social Development ran a pilot study to evaluate the programme and the results showed sustained improvement in both the parenting practices and the children’s behaviour.Read the evaluation report published by the Ministry of Social Development.

What is involved?

Parents across the country come together each week for around two hours and develop approaches to use at home with problem behaviours, such as aggressiveness, ongoing tantrums, and acting out behaviour, such as swearing, whining, yelling, hitting and kicking, answering back, and refusing to follow rules.

The programme looks at:

‣ making time to play and spend quality time with children and letting children lead the play

‣ encouraging the behaviours parents would like to see, through setting clear rules and boundaries and using praise and encouragement

‣ selectively using consequences, such as ignoring, loss of privilege, and time out.

‣ Parents learn from each other and support each other.

How Would I Take Part?

Please discuss with your child's whanau teacher. They can give you a referral form (there will also be copies in the office). Complete the form and return it to the office and we will arrange for it to be sent in to the coordinator of the programme. A member of the Incredible Years Parenting Team will make contact with you.
