Introduction To The Bible’s Chronology

The Bible presents a chronology in Genesis, chapter 5 and 11. This chronology or calendar lists the number of years from the birth of father and son from generation to generation. I asked myself the question: Is there possibly a consistent calendar from Adam to Jesus, from Old to New Testament, from creation to salvation?

After an “every-day” Bible study for about one year (1995-96), I found the answer to this question: Yes, there is such a calendar building a consistent time scale throughout the ages from Adam through Jesus. However, there is no complete list with generations from the birth of the father to the birth of the son. It is only the era between Adam and Abraham which offers us such a generation list. After Abraham, the Bible introduces a different calendar-concept to determine the number of years between the time of Adam and the time of Jesus.

The New Testament offers a clearer picture with a “higher resolution” of God’s character and his plan for mankind. The Book of Galatians, chapter 3, verse 17 introduces a different concept of time calculus. Instead of recording the year from generation-to-generation (birth-to-birth), the Bible introduces the concept covenant-to-covenant. This is the answer to my initial Bible chronology question. The number of years between two consecutive covenants is required to capture the number of years of the salvation history from Adam to Jesus.

The numbers from covenant to successive covenant are special numbers. These are “multiples of ten” such as 10, 20, 30 and so on, or 110, 120, 130 and so on. The multiples of ten can be grouped into pairs of two. The pairs sum into “multiples of a hundred” such as 100, 200, 300 and so on or 1100, 1200, 1300 and son on.

After understanding the two calendar concepts generation-to-generation (birth-to-birth) – of the Old Testament from Adam to Abraham and covenant-to-covenant – of the New Testament from Adam to Jesus, the extremely high number of jigsaw puzzle parts is reduced to a relatively small one.

The following Bible passages are relevant to the Bible’s calendar. They can be divided into four categories:

Category One: Single-verses to determine the number between two covenants:

• Galatians 3:17: 430 years from covenant of circumcision (Abraham) to covenant of law (Moses).• 1 Kings 6:1: 480 years from covenant of law (Moses) to dedication of First Temple (Solomon).• Daniel 9:2: 70 years from First Temple (Solomon) to Second Temple (Zerubbabel).

Category Two: Multiple-verses to determine the number between two covenants:

• Genesis 5: 987 years from covenant of life & death (Adam) to covenant of rapture (Enoch).• Genesis 5-9: 670 years from covenant of rainbow (Noah) to covenant of circumcision (Abraham).• Daniel 9:24-26: 540 years from Zerubbabel Second Temple to Crucifixion of Christ.

Category Three: Scripture passage of prophetic interpretation to determine the number between two covenants:• Daniel 9:24-26: 540 years from Second Temple (Zerubbabel) to Crucifixion of Christ (Jesus).

Category Four: Bible books of meticulous Bible study and spiritual prayer.• King 1+2, 1+2 Chronicles, Jeremiah: 420 years from First Temple (Solomon) to Second Temple (Zerubbabel).

The Bible Chronology from Adam to Jesus is determined by nine covenants which divide the whole calendar into eight sections:

1): 987 years from Adam to Enoch 5): 480 years from Moses to Solomon2): 670 years from Enoch to Noah 6): 420 years from Solomon to Nebuchadnezzar3): 520 years from Noah to Abraham 7): 70 years from Nebuchadnezzar to Zerubbabel 4): 430 years from Abraham to Moses 8): 540 years from Zerubbabel to Jesus

These are all multiples of ten except the first number 987.

The following pairs sum into multiples of hundred.

430+670=1100 520+480=1000 480+420=900

There are relationships between the members of the three pairs:One Example:430 – covenant of law (Moses): Moses was saved in a wooden basket named in Hebrew “tevah”.670 – covenant of rainbow (Noah): Noah was saved in the ark named in Hebrew “tevah”.

The Nine covenants presented in the following graphic are like a ladder reaching from bottom to top from the earth to the sky. It starts with Adam: the covenant of life and death, followed by Enoch, the covenant of rapture; Noah, covenant of rainbow; Abraham, covenant of circumcision; Moses, covenant of law; Solomon, covenant of temple service; Nebuchadnezzar, covenant of end of temple service; Zerubbabel, covenant of second temple service; Jesus, covenant of eternal life. Each covenant is represented by a person as a representative who serves as an intermediate between mankind and God. With each covenant, mankind is getting one step closer to God’s presence. With Jesus, the final step has been reached. One cannot get closer. The blood and body of Christ guarantees as the fruit of the tree of life and as living water.

The nine covenants are forming a rigid “grid” in order to avoid added differences in time book-keeping.

Many Bible scholars believe that the age of the earth is several hundreds of millions of years. It is a great challenge for man to accept the Bible as a book of historical and chronological reliability and accuracy. But great is the benefit when accepting it and great is the loss when denying it. There are countless of versions how the creation history is interwoven with secular data such as the ice age, the stone age and of course the ancestors of mankind to be found in the kingdom of animals. This Bible chronology assumes that Adam has been created in about 4000 BC. In order to study the origin of man we do not need to study the creation but the creator. However, there is essential data provided through the creation by the creator:

• Through man: today’s languages on earth can be traced back to one common language: Adam’s language must havebeen similar to today’s Hebrew language. The human body is the best artifact that it was originally much larger.Consider the human jaw bone. It does not have enough space for all teeth. The wisdom teeth did have enough spaceto grow during pre-flood times. A man was only adult at age 40-60. Pre-flood man was a giant compared to post-floodman - looking like a dwarf. The appendix is an indicator that man was originally designed to eat only vegetarian.

• Through Creation: the oldest living beings on planet earth are the bristlecone pine trees of the Sierra Nevadas, USA. These are approx. 4400 years old. This matches with the number of years between the flood of Noah and today.

• Through Life on Earth: today’s scientists are well on the way to “crack the code” of aging. This code has beenintroduced with Noah’s flood by a change in radiation from the sun and vegetation on earth. There was no rain beforeNoah’s flood. Life on earth was like in a green house. Man lived up to 900 years and more. He lived on a vegetariandiet and was about double tall from today’s average person (likewise were animals). In Genesis 6:3 it is prophesied that man’s life on earth will be cut short after the flood to 120 years. This has been fulfilled with the life of Mosesseveral hundred of years later. The event of the global flood of Noah was a transformation of all life on earth.The original atmosphere was destroyed. It was followed by a change of climate, vegetation and life on earth.This triggered not evolution but the opposite, the extinction and deterioration of life on earth.

• The Millions of Years: This is the time of God. A God who is beyond time and space. “I am Who I am”(Exodus 3:14 – this is a creator who has been since eternity, beyond time and space)

Next Question: How can we set our well-known world calendar (BC / AD) in relationship to the Bible’s calendar? Answer: There is no event in the Bible which has been recorded by secular data. Neither the birth and crucifixion of Christ nor the building of Solomon’s temple has been set into relationship of our contemporary world calendar we are familiar with. None? No! One event in the Bible has been recorded by extra-biblical time-calculus. These are the Assyrian calendars which date back from the time of the Roman Empire to the event when Solomon’s Temple was burned down by Nebuchadnezzar’s army in 586 BC. This is the only year which works as a reference point between the Bible’s and the World’s year count.

There are three ways to calculate the exact years of Christ‟s Birth and Crucifixion.

The First Method is found through Biblical data: The “Only-Biblical-Method”.The Second is found through combination of Biblical and Secular data: The “Combined Method”.The Third is found through Secular data: The “Only-Secular-Method”.

The First Method:586 BC was the year of the burning of Solomon’s Temple. From there, there are 70 years of “the desolation of Jerusalem” until the Zerubabbel’s Second Temple has been dedicated in 516 BC: (Daniel 9:2). From there, there are 490 years to the decree of Caesar for Herod the Great to remodel the Second Temple in 26 BC. From there, there are 49 years to Jesus Christ’s final year of ministry in 23 AD. From there, there is 1 year to the crucifixion of Jesus in 24 AD. Daniel 9:24-26: 70 Sevens, 7 Sevens, 62 Sevens = 70 x 7 years, 7 x 7 years, 62 x 1 week: 1 Seven may be interpreted as 1 week or as 7 years). Jesus was crucified at age 33 (Luke 3:23, John), Jesus was born in 9 BC.

The Second Method:Secular data states King Herod the Great died in 4 BC. In Matthew 2:16 it is stated, Herod the Great killed young children age 2 and younger. Jesus was 2 years old when he fled with parents from Israel to Egypt. In Revelation chapter 12 it is stated, Jesus stayed for 3.5 years in Egypt. Jesus was at age 5.5 when Herod the great died. Jesus was born in 9 BC.

Star of Bethlehem: The conjunction of Mars, Saturn & Jupiter occurred three times during 7BC. The first time in spring: May 29-June 8, second time in early fall: September 26-October 6 and the third time in early winter: December 5-15, about 2 years after the birth of Jesus. The re-appearance of the star is in accordance with Scripture, Matthew chapter 2. Astronomer John Kepler calculated the conjunction of Mars, Saturn and Jupiter in 1603 when it occurred again. Thus, it was December of 7 BC when the three wise men paid honor to Jesus – but not necessarily winter time when Jesus was born.

The Third Method:Emperor Augustus ruled over the Roman Empire between 31 BC and 14 AD. In 4 AD, Augustus decided to adopt Tiberius as his son and successor. Chronologist have dated the year 14 AD (which is the year of Augustus’ death) as the first year of Tiberius as Roman emperor. The misinterpretation of 14 AD instead of 4 AD as Tiberius’ first year of reign lead to a 10-year gap between the assumed and the real birth of Christ. From a Biblical perspective it was the year 4 AD when Tiberius became Roman Emperor as a co-reign together with his father Augustus.The Roman Catholic church introduced a new calendar starting with year 1 AD as the assumed year of Christ’s birth in 525 AD calculated by the monk Dionysius Exiguous or Denis the Little. After the reformation, historians introduced the year 0 as an additional year of the Christian calendar to expand the world calendar into the history before Christianity emerged. This year needs to be subtracted from the 10-year gap, resulting in the correct dating of Christ’s Birth 9 BC: 10 BC+1 = 9 BC.

Star of Bethlehem: Matthew 2: Three wise men from the Mid-East see a star shining from far away in the east. They

travel westwards. They see the star shining again when traveling from Jerusalem to Bethlehem. This is most likely the

triple-conjunction of Mars, Saturn & Jupiter of 7 BC. It was identified by John Kepler (1571-1630) in 1603. The

conjunction occurred three times in a row in the year 7 BC in late spring: May 29-June 8, early fall: September 26-October 6 and early winter: December 5-15. The double re-appearance

of the star is in accordance with scripture of Matthew 2.
