“The BIG Picture”Leader’s Lesson Overview #1

by Becky Fischer

There’s an entire generation rising up who has absolutely no understanding of why it’s important to support Israel.

At first, creating an entire series of lessons on the subject of Israel and the Church for children might seem like a real stretch. Some may think the topic would be too dry and boring, or way over their heads. Or some might think it would just be a “glorified vacation Bible School” with no more depth than lessons full of Old Testament Bible stories. None of these are accurate. Israel is in the news everyday, and as we entered another election cycle in our government during the writing of this manual, we began to realize there was an entire generation rising up who had absolutely no understanding of why it is important to support the tiny little, obscure nation that seems to cause so much trouble in the world. We now watch soberly as more and more Christians seem to lack knowledge of the very ba-sics of biblical truths. God said, “I will bless those who bless [Abraham] and for those who curse [Abraham] I will curse. And all the families of the world will be blessed through you,” (Genesis 12:3). Israel celebrated its 60th birthday as a

nation in 2008, and Kids in Ministry International sponsored a three day kids conference to begin teaching a new generation the deep rooted connec-tion between Christians and Jews. We taught them why it is so important to pray for the peace of Jerusalem, and how our very future of Jesus coming back again hinges on what happens in Israel. We were amazed as some of our most spiritual and committed children began to have “the light come on” of revelation, when prior to the start of the conference they were question-ing why we even needed to study the topic. This lesson then is to give a very quick look at the “big picture” as God sees it through the annals of history. Just how did it all begin? Where do we as Christians fit into the picture? We hope to “connect the dots” between all the Old Testament stories and heroes and their significance to us today as born again believers. It is a magnificent story that only God could weave and understanding it only enhances the truth and validity of God’s Word.

Introduction

Why Is Israel Important?Props: 1. A large wall map of the world mounted in an easy place for several people to get to at one time. If

you do not have a wall map, a globe is an option, 2. A newspaper with headlines about Israel.

Lesson #1:

We’re starting a new series of lessons about the nation of Israel and her citizens called Jews. What’s amazing is even though Israel and the Jewish people go back thousands of years they are still the focus on much of the news we see on TV and newspapers today. (Display a newspaper with headlines about Israel.) The whole world has it’s attention on Israel. Half the world hates Israel and the other half are friends of Israel. Most born again Christians love and support the Jews. It’s important to know why because entire nations ac-tually go to war over their love or hate of the Jews. Let’s take a look at a world map and see if we can find Israel. It must be a really big nation if it gets so much attention. (Go to your world map or globe and allow the children time to find Israel. Make sure all the children see it, then mark it in some way for future reference.) Israel is not big at all! In fact, it’s a very tiny nation! How could such a tiny nation draw so much attention? (Allow for discussion. No right conclusion is necessary now.) This should lead us to start asking ques-tions like, “Who are the Jews anyway?” Where did they come from, and why are they so impor-

tant in the world? It should make us Christians even more curious because the whole Bible, both Old and New Testaments, were written by Jews. Our spiritual history as Christians comes through the Jewish people. Everything God wanted to tell the world concerning His plan of salvation He told through the Jews. This is why the Bible says “salvation is of the Jews” (John 4:22). Jesus was born of Jewish parents in the nation of Israel. Jesus was a Jew. Jesus was sent to tell the Jews about salvation. He wasn’t even supposed to share the information with any other people (Matthew 15:24). Every Bible hero we have ever had—David, Moses, Samson, Samuel, Gideon, Esther, Ruth, Daniel—were Jews. All of Jesus’ disciples were Jews. God was the one who started the Jewish nation in the first place. He must have had a reason. Not only that, but our whole fu-ture as believers is tied to what happens to the Jews! God told Israel, “You are my Chosen peo-ple (Deuteronomy 14:2). He didn’t choose them because they were big or even great, but because He loved them and wanted to keep His promises to their ancestors (Deuteronomy 7:7-8).

Visual Lesson #1

Where It All Began

Lesson #1:

Let’s take a journey through the Bible to see if we can learn where the Jewish people first came from. I’m going to need some helpers. (Call your helpers forward already dressed in their costumes.) These children all represent Bible characters you are familiar with. (If you work with children who have no church background and don’t know these people, you are going to have to explain who they are. Make sure your rope is long enough for all of the actors to hold onto plus more left over.) These first two children represent the first two people ever mentioned in the Bible, Adam and Eve. (Give them the end of the rope.) They are the parents of the whole human race. The first children they had were two boys named Cain and Abel. (They also grab onto the rope. All actors stand close together. ) If you remember Cain was a farmer (point to the fruit) and Abel was a shepherd (point to the lamb). They had a third brother we don’t know much about named Seth. (Seth takes his place holding the rope.) What he is famous for is being the great, great, great+ grand father of one of the most famous men in all of history,

Noah. (Give Noah the rope.) What was Noah famous for? (Allow for response.) He was famous for building the ark when God destroyed the earth with a flood. Further down the family line (point to all the children holding the rope to show it is the “family line”) came a very important person we’re going to be talking about a lot over the next few weeks. (Hand the rope to Abraham.) His name is Abraham. God had been looking for a man like Abraham for a very long time. He was looking for a man who would wor-ship Him and only Him in a world where people were worshiping all kinds of other gods. He was looking for a man of integrity—one who kept his promises, and would be a friend of God (James 2:23). He was looking for someone who had eyes of faith and could believe for big miracles. Most of all God was looking for a man who would raise his children to worship Him too. He found all of these things in Abraham. He was absolutely critical to God’s whole plan of salvation for all mankind. Abraham didn’t know it though, and God deliberately didn’t tell him because Abraham needed to follow God by faith.

Actors: Adam, Eve, Cain, Abel, Seth, Noah, Abraham, Jesus Props: 1. Artificial leaves for Adam and Eve, 2. A basket of fruit for Cain, 3. A toy lamb for Abel, 4. A Bible costume for Seth, 5. Two or three stuffed animals for Noah, 6. The Abraham mask for Abraham from the JOM Visual Kit pg 252 or create your own costume for Abraham that can be used throughout this series, 7. A 20 ft. rope thin enough to hang clothes pins and paper on it.

Visual Lesson #2

Top Secret!Props: 1. Paper about 11 inches wide and 17 inches long rolled up with a bright red ribbon tied around it. With a marker write on the outside in big letters “Top Secret.” On the inside have a large picture of Jesus taped to the scroll and printed above it the words “Jesus, Son of Abraham,” 2. A girl dressed in a Bible costume as Sarah holding a baby doll.

Lesson #1:

God’s plan of salvation was TOP SECRET! (Hold up your top secret scroll.) It had to be! His arch enemy, Satan, was on the prowl trying to destroy mankind and enticing people to turn their backs on God to follow him. If God would have exposed his hand to Abraham or anyone else, the devil would have undoubtedly intercepted the plan and kept it from coming to pass. What was the plan? (Allow for discussion. When it’s over untie the ribbon and unroll the scroll exposing the picture of Jesus.) God’s plan was to bring the Savior of the world down the family line of Abraham. He needed a pure family line to bring Jesus through. He needed a family that would always serve and love him and was separated from the world in the way they lived and thought. He needed a family that was His very own. Everything was hinging on Abraham! How was this supposed to happen? (Sarah enters with the baby.) Abraham and his wife Sarah wanted to have a baby, but they couldn’t. Why couldn’t they have a baby? (Let various children tell parts of the story in chronological order.) They were too old to have children. But God had promised Abraham

a son. He told Abraham he was going to become a great nation, and he would have so many children and descendents they would be as numerous as the stars in the sky or pebbles of sand on the beach. That’s a lot of kids! Abraham had no idea how God was going to do it, but they were covenant partners. They had signed their partnership with the blood of animals which meant it was a covenant that could not be broken. Finally when Abraham was 100 years old and Sarah was 90, their son Isaac was born. There was no question in anyone’s mind it was a miracle! Isaac was a miracle baby! Then something horrible happened. God told Abraham to sacrifice his son to prove his love for Him. But Abraham trusted God completely. He thought it through. He decided God would have to raise Isaac from the dead because his promise of millions of offspring still had to come to pass. He was ready to do it when God stopped him. “I just wanted to know if you’d really go through with it, Abraham.” Little did Abraham know he had paved the way for God to sacrifice His only son Jesus, a miracle baby too, to prove His love to the world.

Visual Lesson #3

Abraham’s Story

Lesson #1:

Props: 1. A bag of clothes pins, 2. Pieces of paper with names written on them in black marker big enough for the children in the audience to read. Names will include: Esau, Jacob, Judah, Joseph, Moses, Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego, Samson, Saul, Samuel, Jeremiah, Elijah, Joel, Joseph, Mary, and Jesus, 3. A child dressed as Jesus, 4. A tall artificial tree.

So Abraham began a family for God. He actually had two sons. It’s a long story, but before Isaac was born, he had another son named Ish-mael by a different wife. We’ll talk about Ishmael in a later lesson. For now we’re going to continue discussing Abraham’s family line through Isaac. (Chose a child to hold the end of the rope which should be at least eight to ten feet away from Sar-ah.) Abraham’s family was growing just like God had promised. There was Isaac’s sons Jacob and Esau. (Pin their names to the rope with the clothes pins.) Jacob had twelve sons by himself. Two of them were Judah and Joseph. (Continue to pin each name to the rope as you name them.) There was Moses, Daniel, Shadrach, Me-shach, and Abednego. There was Samson, Saul, Samuel the prophet, and the prophets Isaiah, Jer-emiah, Elijah, Joel, and eventually a young man named Joseph, and a young girl named Mary. And what was their son named? (Allow for response as the Jesus actor steps up and takes the end of the rope from the other child.) It was Jesus! Jesus was in Abraham’s family line! He was God’s top secret plan for the salvation of the world! He was the

Messiah, the savior that all His ancestors had been told would rescue them from their enemies. You see, every now and then God would sneak bits and pieces of His top secret plan to the prophets. Throughout the centuries he would give them pieces to the puzzle such as where Jesus, or who they called the Messiah, would be born, and how He would die. He told them what He would do, and many other things. It was a puzzle no one was really able to put the pieces together on until after Jesus had died and resurrected. So even though they knew some things, they didn’t know everything, and the plan of salvation was safe from the corrupt hands of the enemy! It was this family—coming down through Abraham—that became known as the Jewish people. They became the nation of Israel. Jesus wasn’t the end of the line. He was just one in the family tree. There have been millions of Jewish people born since Jesus, and they are still with us today. But they brought us Jesus! (Have your actors take the paper names from the rope and pin them to the artificial tree to demonstrate this was the family tree for the nation of Israel.)

“Jesus, Born Under the Law”

Drama Skit

Lesson #1:

Actors: God, Jesus, Abraham, a teenage IsaacProps: 1. A sturdy table or two sturdy chairs for God and Jesus to stand on to give the illusion they are up in heaven. Cover the table with either cotton batting for clouds, or shiny gold material for streets of gold. 2. A bundle of wood or branches, 3. Shoe boxes painted gray for stones for the altar. 4. A toy lamb, 5. A small artificial bush.Costumes: White wig and robe for God, a brown wig and beard, and a blue robe for Jesus, any type of Bible costumes for Abraham and Isaac. Abraham will wear the Abraham mask from the Visual Kit.

“Abraham’s Sacrifice”

(God and Jesus are “up in heaven” looking down to earth where Abraham and Isaac are walking slowly with Isaac carrying the bundle of wood. There are “stones” [boxes] scattered around the stage.)

Jesus: (Pointing at Abraham and Isaac) There they are, Father, coming up Mount Moriah just like you told them to do.

God: Yes, I see them. Abraham isn’t wavering one bit. Look how he’s marching up the mountain with calm assurance. I knew I could count on him.

Jesus: He loves and trusts you completely, Father. When you told him to take his only son up to the mountain and sacrifice him to you, he didn’t even flinch one bit.

God: I know it. I’ve been waiting hundreds of years to find a man like Abraham who would obey me totally with no holding back. I’m counting his faith as righteousness to him. It has to be this way. We’re covenant partners. If he will go all the way and be willing to sacrifice his only son...

Jesus: Then you can send your only son as a sacrifice for mankind to earth and it’s all perfectly legal on earth and in heaven.

God: You got it! Look! They made it to the top. Let’s see what they do.

Abraham: Well, here we are, Isaac. You can set the wood over there and let’s start gathering the stones o make that altar.

Isaac: (Sitting down and wiping his forehead with his arm.) Aren’t you even tired, Father? I’m tired and I’m just a teenager. Why....you’re over a hundred years old and we just climbed up Mount Moriah. Let’s rest for a minute.

Abraham: Why, you youngsters! (Chuckles) When I was your age....

Isaac: (Covering his ears) Oh, no! Not another “when I was your age” story! Please! Spare me!

25

Jesus Our MessiahAbraham: (Chuckles again) Well, OK, here...you help me with these rocks.

Isaac: There’s something I don’t understand and I’ve been wondering about it this whole trip. We’ve got the wood and we’ve got the fire for this sacrifice. But where’s the lamb that we always offer up to God? What are we going to use for the sacrifice?

Abraham: Well, son, don’t worry about it. God’s going to provide the Lamb.

Isaac: Oh, all right....(stands up and dusts himself off. He begins gathering all the stones and stacks them into an altar while God and Jesus talk.)

God: (Pointing at Abraham.) Look at that Abraham. He wasn’t able to tell Isaac everything yet, but I can see his heart and he’s going to go through with it. Yes!

Jesus: This is one of the most important moments in the history of man, isn’t it, Father?

God: Yes, son, it is. (Folds his arms and nods his head.) Abraham doesn’t have any idea how important what he’s doing is to the rest of the entire human race. He has trusted me from the beginning. He didn’t have a son, and I promised him one. But I made him wait 25 years before Isaac was born. That was very important because I wanted to make sure the whole world knew Isaac was a miracle baby. I made sure both Abraham and his wife Sarah were way too old to have kids so that everyone would know I was the one who gave them their son.

Jesus: And it’s their only son which is very important because when I go down to earth (thumps his chest with his thumb) I’m going to be a miracle baby with a human mother and I’ll be an only son with You as my Father. (Puts arm around God’s shoulder.) There are so many similarities between me and Isaac.

God: Listen! (Leans forward, cups his ear with his hand.) They’re talking again. This is the big moment!

Isaac: There! (Dusts off his hands.) The last stone has been laid on the altar. Now it’s time for God to bring us the lamb.

Abraham: Uh...son, do you trust me completely? (Acts nervous.)

Isaac: Of course I do, father. (Puts hand on father.) There’s no one on earth I trust more than you.

Abraham: Well then, I want you to listen closely because what I’m about to tell you is going to seem crazy but you’ve got to trust me. Promise me that you will.

Isaac: I promise you, father, but what’s going on?

Abraham: Isaac, when God promised to give me and your mother a son of our own He told me to look at the stars in the heavens above and try to count them. (Points upward.)

Isaac: Right. And He told you that you would have more descendents than there were stars in the heavens. I remember. You’ve told me that a hundred times, and I believe it’s going to happen, father.

Abraham: But it hasn’t happened yet, has it, Isaac?

Isaac: No, sir! I don’t even have any kids yet. I’m still a kid myself.

Abraham: And God can’t lie to us or break His promise to us, can He, son?

26

Jesus Our MessiahIsaac: Of course not! He’s our covenant partner. If He ever broke His promise to us He’d have to die because our covenant with each other is unto death! We can never go back on promises we make to Him and He can never go back on promises He makes to us. And, boy! We got the best end of that deal! Imagine, father! We’re covenant partners with Almighty God!

Abraham: That’s right, son. And if our covenant partner asks us to do something for Him, what are we to do?

Isaac: Why, we’re obligated to do just what He asks. What does all this have to do with not having a lamb for our sacrifice and with me having more kids than the stars in the sky? Where are we going with this conversation?

Abraham: Isaac, our covenant partner has asked me to sacrifice to Him the most precious possession I have. He’s asked me to sacrifice you!

Isaac: Are..are...are you serious? But...but...

Abraham: Now, son, I don’t understand it either. But I just know that He has asked me to sacrifice you on the altar and yet He’s promised to give us more descendants than there are stars in the sky. Then He must be planning on raising you from the dead!

God: That’s it! That’s it! YES! Abraham, you did it! If you expect me to raise your son from the dead then that means as your covenant partner, I will be required to raise MY Son from the dead! Yes! Abraham, yes!

Jesus: This is fantastic, Father. He just made it possible for us to carry out the plan of salvation for all mankind!

God: Shhhh! Let’s keep listening...

Isaac: I...I...don’t know what to say, father, except I love you, and I’ll do whatever you ask of me.

Abraham: Here, son, let me prepare you for the sacrifice. (Ties son with rope and helps him onto altar.)

Jesus: This is it, Father. It’s time to stop them. You didn’t really want him to kill Isaac. You just wanted to know that he was willing.

God: That’s right. Abraham! Abraham! Don’t harm your son or do anything to him! Now I know that you respect Me and trust me, and you are even willing to sacrifice your only son to me. That’s all I wanted, Abraham. I just wanted to know you were willing.

Abraham: Oh, thank you, Lord!

Isaac: Oh, man! Praise the Lord! Nobody is happier than me! Come on, dad. Get me off this altar!

(Sheep bleating in the back ground.)

Abraham: Oh, thank you Lord! (Unties Isaac and raises hands in praise.) Praise your name forever!

Isaac: Look, father! (Points) Over there behind the bush! God has provided a lamb for the sacrifice!

Jesus: I love it when a plan comes together!

God: And now the stage is set! How little does he know that I am providing another Lamb. It’s the sacrificial lamb for all mankind! (Pats Jesus on the back.)

Jesus: And no man will take my life, Father. I will lay it down!

Experiencing God #1

One of the big reasons God chose Abraham to be the father of His chosen people, the Jews, was because Abraham worshiped the one true God alone while everyone else in the land worshiped many gods. It should be obvious why this was important. But the second big reason God chose Abraham was because He knew Abraham would teach his children to worship Him alone as well. For centuries Jewish parents have taught their children a special prayer called the “SHEMA” (pronounced ‘shuh-maw’ with the emphasis over the second syllable). It’s a prayer that Jesus and every good Jew prayed every day of their lives. The prayer and what to do with it is found in Deuteronomy 6:4-9. (Select a child to read it from their Bible.) Because of these scriptures Orthodox Jews, or those who follow the scriptures very closely, literally strap little boxes to their foreheads and arms.
