Workshop Description:

Join me for a full day workshop as joyous colors are used to combine hand appliqué with machine piecing in this Prairie Lilies Scrap Quilt. Constructed in a two-for-one technique, the machine piecing methods create cutaways that are ready to go into a Bonus Quilt, so you are actually making two quilts at the same time. Make use of every bit of fabric. It is such fun!

Students bring a suitcase of fabric. (guidelines below) Class starts with how to choose and combine fabrics for a successful scrap quilt, ‘shopping’ from what is brought in your suitcase, giving valuable fabric selection skills that can be applied to future quiltmaking projects.

This is followed with a clever two-for-one piecing method that makes economical use of every bit of fabric. The design is then adorn with hand applique, utilizing a very nifty stem technique. The stitch taught here gives invisible results, and is the same stitch used for a neat and tidy binding on your quilts.

In addition to the Prairie Lilies quilt, students will also be making a Bonus Quilt out of the cutaways. Here is a link to see the Prairie Lilies main quilt. http://www.lindahalpin.com/gallery_description/prairie_lilies.htmlAnd here is a link to see the Bonus Quilt made from the Prairie Lily Cutawayshttp://www.lindahalpin.com/gallery_description/lilybonus.html

The class sample is 50” x 50”. Directions includes multiple sizes, so you decide how large a quilt you want to make.

Fabric Guidelines:

Class begins with Fabric Selection. We go through fabrics you bring and learn new combinations. Class quilt lots of reds, blues, pinks, greens, etc. Bring suitcase of 100% cotton fabrics, prewashed, pressed, in a variety of scales of design. (solids, small prints, medium prints, large prints; include all kinds of designs: calicoes, checks, plaids, stripes, batiks). We will select fabrics from your suitcase.

• Fabric is divided into ‘backgrounds’, ‘lily fabrics’, and ‘leaf /stem fabrics.’

• Background can be a several tans that have no other colors in them.

• Lily fabrics must contrast with the backgrounds. • 4 different quilters quarters of greens for leaves /stems.• Be sure to include background fabrics! Bring a variety of

lily fabrics. I combined batiks with traditional • quilt making fabrics. Go to my website to see a picture of the quilt:

Frequently Asked Questions: Scrap Quilt? Just because it’s a scrap quilt doesn’t mean we reach blindly into our stash and sewing whatever we grab. We have more control than that. Bring fabrics you love. Include fabric you don’t know what to do with.

Bring pieces large enough to work with. Tiny pieces will not work for the sewing techniques we’re doing. Quilters Quarters (or Fat Quarters) are fine.

What fabric to bring? Class begins with Fabric Selection. You will be ‘shopping’ from what you bring. You might supplement with other fabrics from home, fabrics swapped with classmates, or new fabrics purchased at class. Be sure to bring backgrounds, fabric for lilies, and for leaves. Include a variety of solids, small prints, medium prints, large prints, checks, plaids, stripes, batiks, etc.).

How big is the quilt? Class sample is 50” x 50” . Directions include multiple sizes, so you choose your size. Remember, cutaways will create a Bonus Quilt!

See picture here:http://www.lindahalpin.com/gallery_description/lilybonus.html

How much fabric to bring? Bring a suitcase full. (larger than a carry-on, smaller than a steamer trunk). Bring a well-rounded selection to choose from.Precut prior to class? DON’T cut anything prior to class.

Workshop Description:

Circles can be found throughout the natural world and in human designs from diverse cultures and across millennia. Circles appeal to us on so many levels—they are simple and elegant; they’re curved, organic, and smooth, with no sharp corners; they evoke a comforting sense of completeness and totality; they’re in the hugs that embrace us and the nests that protect baby birds. Circles are as familiar as the dot of an “i” or the period at the end of a sentence. They come to us in images of the Earth from space. Circles are as tiny as a subatomic particle and as large as a black hole.

In this class we explore and create a sampler of circular motifs in bead embroidery. Working with a wide variety of beads we will learn, design, and stitch a diverse range of circular forms that could be used on art quilts, garments, and other fiber art.

Some previous embroidery experience is recommended.

Workshop Description:

Learn this simple technique for creating a deceptively complex quilt with strips that seem to weave and intertwine. Not a block construction and not a “cheater” method, this approach creates a lattice using partial seams. This technique is NOT HARD and can be used for other patterns such as herringbone.
