The Bihari János Folk Dance Ensemble
2
The ensemble was founded by Kossuth Prize-winning choreogra-
pher and ethnographer Ferenc Novák and little more than twenty
of his friends in 1954.
Now, more than two hundred children, youth, and adults pass on
the spirit of this initial workshop, and the warmth of their second
home will come down to following generations. From the very
beginning of its existence, the Ensemble is seeking different ways
of putting Hungarian folk dance on stage. In 1972, Bihari was the
initiator of the first dancehouse (‘táncház’) in Budapest, where
the world-famous Hungarian dancehouse movement started. (In
2011, the táncház method - the way in teaching traditional dancing
was inscribed on the UNESCO List of Intangible Heritage of Urgent
Safeguarding.)
SHORT DESCRIPTION AND HISTORY
For us, heritage is not only a historical collection, but
shall be handled as an active material and source of
ever newer choreographies.
The adult group has about 30 choreographies on
repertoire, including authentic dances, contemporary
folk dance, and dance theatre shows.
Bihari has always worked as an open ensemble, hosting
the most well-known Hungarian choreographers
(Katalin Györgyfalvay, Jolán Foltin, Károly Szigeti, Sándor
Tímár, Zsolt Juhász, Zoltán Zsuráfszky) in its rehearsal
hall.

Folk dance teaching and a well-planned training of
the rising generation started in the early 1990’s. A
school was formed in 1995 as a branch of another
school and became independent in August 2000 as
Bihari János Art School with 160 children. Hungarian
folk dance teaching starts at age of six and is done in
ten classes and five groups.
