IMPROVING Blackwood’s streetscape, organis-ing over 70 events, and contributions to commu-nity and environmental work are just some of theoutstanding achievements and services for thelocal community recognised at this year’sAustralia Day awards held by Mitcham Council.

Take the Blackwood Action Group (BAG) forexample which was presented an ‘Excellence inCommunity Service Award’.

Some of the activities this group has been

involved in: Wittunga Botanic Gardens MasterPlan; the Blackwood Road Management Review;upgrading of the Blackwood streetscapes,Blackwood and Coromandel railway station gar-dens; plans for Waite Street Reserve upgrade;and many other initiatives.

“It was indeed an honour and a most gratifyingfeeling to be awarded the Mitcham Council’sAward for excellence in community service dur-ing the Australia Day ceremony at Carrick Hill,”comments Geoff Bartlett, BAG secretary. “TheAward really acknowledges individual efforts bymany local Hills’ residents who have a great pas-sion for the district.”

While Onkaparinga Council recognised the‘Coro Alive! 175’ Coordinating Committee bypresenting it with the ‘Community Event of theYear Award’.

Over 70 events were held from January toNovember last year by 18 organising groupsfrom the community. These ranged from con-certs to historical discovery sessions, guidedwalks, orchard open days, bus tours, exhibitions, celebratory church services, picnics and a com-munity festival.

“There was also significant support from thecities of Onkaparinga and Mitcham. The awardreally is to the people of Coromandel Valley andclose neighbours that organised and participatedin the celebrations," said Trevor Conlon,CoroAlive! 175 President

Events were enjoyed by residents living local-

ly, in neighbouring suburbs, across SouthAustralia and interstate. The CoordinatingCommittee has estimated that upwards of 15,000volunteer hours have been contributed to plan-ning and staging the calendar of events.

"I would like to acknowledge the work of thecoordination committee members, support of thestaff and volunteers of the CoromandelCommunity Centre, and the contribution madeby community groups and individuals whostaged the events,” added Trevor.

PRIME Minister Julia Gillard received awarm welcome at the first CommunityCabinet meeting held last month at TheHub Recreation Centre (Aberfoyle ParkHigh School), despite the vocal protestersagainst live animal exports outside.

Community Cabinet meetings are partof the Prime Minister’s commitment toprovide opportunities for people to bringtheir concerns directly to the government, and they also give the government firsthand access to community perceptions andexpectations.

With the general election happening onSeptember 14 this year, some may see itwas a political move to hold the first meet-ing in Boothby.

The Boothby electorate represents ‘mid-dle Australia’ and the outer suburbs of thiselectorate include Springfield, CrafersWest, Blackwood, Happy Valley, Marionand Oaklands Park.

It is held by the Liberals’ AndrewSouthcott and is the most marginal seat inthe country by just 0.3 per cent, followinga redistribution last year.

After welcoming the people to the land,Aunty Josie, a Kaurna Elder lightened themood by advising people to ask the ques-

tions but to ‘make sure you get the rightanswers.’

There were also a few jocular momentsbetween attending ministers with MarkButler MP highlighting he’d been to thesame school as the Prime Minister – but afew years later!

Flanked by Senator Penny Wong andHon Kate Ellis, Ms Gillard shared some ofher personal life growing up in SouthAustralia, and how her parents hadfocused on opportunity and education togive the family a better chance.

She also spoke of what the Governmenthad achieved since it had been in power, highlighting the National BroadbandNetwork, the focus on clean energy, hospi-tal care and the money being spent oninfrastructure in SA.

Somewhat reminiscent of a first day atschool, the eleven ministers present thenexplained what they’d done that day inSouth Australia, and then questions werewelcomed from the floor.

The 300-plus audience was made up ofpeople of all ages, and all backgrounds.Concerns raised from the floor were pri-marily social issues.

The Prime Minister fielded questionsranging from the issues of single parentsshifting onto the ‘Newstart’ allowance, thelow pay for childcare workers, mental

health funding to a query about the prob-lem of youth violence.

Questions were also asked about climatechange, food labelling and world poverty, but it was the asylum seeker and refugeeissue which attracted a larger number ofquestions, including two secondary schoolstudents grilling the Prime Minister on thisissue.

The Prime Minister and relevant minis-ters answered the questions politely andeloquently, but didn’t reveal anything new.

Ms Gillard responded to one queryabout refugees by highlighting theGovernment was lifting the refugee intaketo 20,000, and was focused on deterringasylum seekers from taking the dangerousjourney to Australia by boat.

She admitted youth violence was a diffi-cult issue, but stressed work had gone intoprograms which focused on helping youthhave good role models and encouragedteam work.

Meanwhile, like a tinny radio in thebackground, the protesters’ continued theirchants.

Although the meeting ended with awholehearted applause, it remains to beseen on 14 September whether thisCommunity Cabinet has convinced thepeople of Boothby to change their viewsand voting. ❐❐

Life changing trip

Join in Easter discoveryEASTER is coming ... sooner rather than laterthis year!

After an Easter in late April in 2011, whichcoincided with Anzac Day; we find ourselveswith a March Easter in 2013. Furthermore it willbe during the school term, instead of it being sur-rounded by a holiday period.

Blackwood Hills Baptist Church is lookingforward to reflecting upon and celebrating thestory and meaning of Easter on the weekend of29-31 March.

“It’s a special weekend in the calendar for allkinds of reasons,” said Associate Pastor JasonHoet. “People still find the first Easter story afascination and seek to get an understanding ofwhat it means. Our experience is that this is thecase with people of all ages.

“People are very welcome to attend any of theservices over the Easter weekend,” added Jason.

“On Good Friday we try to engage the senses aswe reflect upon the intriguing and dire circum-stances that surround the trial and crucifixion ofJesus. We try to capture a mood that brings usinto the story and has us consider its implicationsfor our lives”.

“On Easter Sunday we seek to do somethingall together different as we try to come to termswith the surprise and wonder of the resurrec-tion,” added Jason.

“It certainly is a contrast to emerge on EasterSunday with a new found hope in the miracle ofEaster. We love it when people join us in thatdiscovery.”

You are welcome to join in the Good Fridayservice at 10am on March 29 at Blackwood HillsBaptist Church at 72 Coromandel Parade,Blackwood. You are also welcome to join in onEaster Sunday at 10am and 7pm on March 31. ❐❐ For more information call the church on8370 0333 or visit www.bhbc.org.au

Wanted: Green Army projects

◆◆ An ABC-TV reporter interviews Greg Hunt (on right) about the Coalition’s ‘GreenArmy’ project , joined by Dale Thompson (CFS Sturt Group) and Andrew Southcott(Boothby MP).

◆◆ Maxine Conlon and David Wyatt working on some of the information and records gathered during the

CoroAlive!175 events held last year.

Challenge to sort out Coromandel Valley history

A ‘Green Army’ of young Australians will take on environ-mental projects to clean up our community under theFederal Coalition’s Environment Plan.

At the Belair CFS Station on Sheoak Road last month;Greg Hunt, the Coalition’s Shadow Minister for ClimateAction, Environment & Heritage; Andrew Southcott,Federal Member for Boothby; together with DaleThompson, CFS Sturt Group officer announced the ‘green’plan.

“We are tackling environmental issues head on with a15,000 strong Green Army which will enable teams to oper-ate in nearly every community across the country,” saidMr Hunt.

The Green Army will be comprised of teams of up to 10people including a co-ordinator to tackle local environmen-tal projects. Participants will receive a training wage andsupervision.

Each project may take up to 25 weeks to complete.“We are asking the community to submit ideas for worth-

while projects,” said Boothby MP, Andrew Southcott.

“It may be cleaning up a local creek, restoring a bush-walking path, rejuvenating sand dunes or reducing flamma-ble undergrowth like feral olives in at-risk bushfire areas,"he added.

Sturt Group CFS officer, Dale Thompson was supportiveof the plan, commenting that, “this is an ideal opportunityto reduce some of the bushfire risk in the Adelaide Hills byremoving feral and flammable vegetation.

“The ‘Green Army’ working in conjunction with localsCouncil could have a significant impact in reducing theimpact of a bushfire.”

Andrew agreed saying, “We are keen for local environ-ment groups or councils to be involved. They may worktogether with the Green Army to get the job done or theymay act as co-ordinators for projects which they see as apriority for our area.

“Areas such as Brownhill Creek, Sturt River, BelairNational Park, and the coastline could be possible optionsfor a Green Army scheme.”

part of the formal records system known asCollections MOSAIC, a data base for historicalcollections, being introduced throughoutNational Trust of SA branches.

Over the last two years many hours have beenput in to transferring previous records from theold systems. This work has largely beenachieved, and is being continued by AshleyPhillips and Maxine Conlon.

Ashley and Maxine, together with DavidWyatt constitute a working group from theBranch Committee focussing on the processingof information in hand in preparation for addition

THE highly successful calendar of communityevents organised to celebrate the discovery ofCoromandel Valley 175 years ago, finished inNovember last year.

These events promoted community spirit andactivity that will no doubt continue in the mindsof those who participated for many years tocome.

However, a legacy of the activities is a largeamount of verbal and written records and record-ed interviews now in the possession of theCoromandel Valley and Districts National TrustBranch.

This is great news for the community butleaves an interesting but challenging task to col-

to the formal records. (This includes the “new”information collected throughout 2012.)

There is a need for volunteers to help sort orprepare written documents as electronic files, aswell as transcribe audio files to text.

To assist in this task the Branch is seeking acontrol pedal and software intended for use witha computer, or to borrow (or have donated) a footpedal transcription machine.

these interesting and valuable tasks or becomeinvolved in bringing together the “Story ofCoromandel Valley”, contact the BranchSecretary, David Wyatt on 8270 4400, or email:[email protected]

They staged over 30 of the celebrationevents which included the CoromandelConnections and the Spotlight Nightswhere research information and storieswere exchanged. The wider communityreceived great benefit during the year andan upsurge in interest and involvement inthe history of the Valley and its people wasdiscovered.

YOU don’t have to travel all the way into thecity to enjoy a Fringe-like event. Come andenjoy an evening of music and relaxation whilesocialising with friends and family.

The Coromandel Community Centre will behosting a 'Music in the Park' evening onWeymouth Oval, 442 Main Road, CoromandelValley on Saturday, 16 March.

Several bands will entertain the crowd on theOval from 6.30pm. Bring along your rug, chairand picnic or purchase something from the cater-ing options on offer.

The performers lined up to entertain the crowdwill include: Abbey Howlett (charismatic youngartist with a powerful and unique vocal style pre-senting soulful original tunes and fresh spins onold ones); Bee Wood Jazz (some traditional jazztunes combined with modern and less conven-tional - mostly ex Blackwood High students);and Onkaparinga City Big Band - a crowdfavourite and supported by the City ofOnkaparinga.

Adults can soak up the atmosphere while chil-dren play on the oval in a safe and secure envi-ronment. Families are encouraged to bring alongsport equipment to keep the kids busy.

A $2 donation will be all that it takes to enjoythe entertainment at this family orientated com-munity event.

This evening is supported by The City ofOnkaparinga and Blackwood Party Hire.

“This is the first time I have entered thecompetition,” said Blackwood residentSharon Brown. “Being a full-time Mum totwo young children, this prize of $200 isfantastic and will come in very handy.

“I’m originally from Ireland, however Imet my Australian husband at Coffin Bay.We both love fishing and the outdoors, andspend time exploring the Coorong.”

“We’ve been in Blackwood for over 10years and feel really privileged to live insuch a beautiful environment. It’s only 15minutes to the city, yet have the BelairNational Park just around the corner,”said Sharon.

Sharon was looking to spend her win-nings at Snazzi’s Boutique, selecting a gar-ment for her mother-in-law; buying fruitand veg from Waggon Wheels; and treatsfor her dog from Blackwood Pets.

Community can tuck in to edible garden trailBELAIR resident Nick Wilkey presentedCouncil with a new and exciting vision of an edi-ble garden trail throughout the City of Mitchamrecently in an attempt to reignite Council interestin community gardens.

As reported in this paper last month, councilwithdrew support for a community garden at theend of last year citing financial reasons; thecouncil is already in deficit by $1.5 million.

The deputation, ‘Community Gardens: aSustainable Way Forward’ proposes mainte-nance of several sites in the City of Mitcham

through community and business sponsorship. “It focuses on community business support

through the development of co-partnerships andhas a strong core value of inclusion of all groups, such as minority and cultural, to encourage com-munity involvement from all sectors,” said Nick.

He added a number of local businesses hadalready offered their generous support to the pro-ject through allocation of funds or through thesupply of products, including plants and equip-ment hire, as well as labour and knowledge.

This community gardens’ model is based onones in Adelaide’s sister cities of Austin, Texasand Auckland, New Zealand.

Sites currently being considered for the projectinclude the Blackwood Hill Reserve, CarrickHill, and Flinders University. Nick hoped everycouncillor would embrace the vision, the sustain-ability aspects and community benefits.

Several experts were already on board andonce a group has been formalised, Nick is keento hold a public forum and to work with interest-ed groups, organisations, businesses and theCouncil to move the vision forward.

In order for the new project to move forward, the current motion would need to be rescindedand supported by a majority of Mitcham council-lors. ❐❐

RIGHT: Melva Yandell with the Blackwood Golf Club “Grandmothers’ Trophy” which she won in 1993 for bestscore in the qualifying rounds of the club championship while being a grandmother.

GOLF has played a huge part in the lives of twofemale members of the Blackwood Golf Club inCherry Gardens.

This month both ladies are celebrating50 years since they joined the club in January1963. The women of Blackwood Golf club willhonour these two ladies on March 5 - GeraldineEitzen and Melva Yandell (pictured on the right)- who have contributed a great deal in differentways to golf and the social life of the womenmembers.

Geraldine brought most of her family to golf atBlackwood with husband Murray also notchingup 45 years, and four of their children, Trent,Shelley, Ashley and Guy becoming members.

Guy represented the club in Junior Pennants, while Geraldine played Interclub for some years,

and was non-playing captain for a year afterretiring as a player. She was elected to theWomen’s Committee in 1995.

Geraldine has had two holes-in-one. The firstwas on the 14th hole at Blackwood before thereorganization of the back nine. The other was atClare, when a group of caravanners spent aweekend there.

In fact Geraldine and Murray have been lead-ing lights of a group taking their caravans toLoxton and Millicent for interclub competitionsover long weekends.

Melva joined Blackwood shortly after her hus-band, Max, did. Max was a foundation member, attending the first planning meeting in 1962.Melva spent many years on the Women’sCommittee, four as Secretary, 3 as Vice-presi-

dent and 2 as President. Melva caddied for many of the players in the

Women’s Pennant competition. Strangelyenough, Melva also had a hole-in-one on the14th, in 1970.

Both Geraldine and Melva have vivid memo-ries of building the course at Cherry Gardens. Itwas just a forest then, and Melva remembers see-ing the first fairway laid.

When work was allocated at working bees,Melva complains, she was too often given thejob of removing stones from what is now the left

hand bunker near the 16th green. Geraldine andMurray attended every working bee except one, their specialty being top dressing fairways.

Geraldine, who still plays in the field on thewomen’s competition day, Tuesday, is wellknown for sharing jokes at lunch.

Melva doesn’t play competition any more, butcomes to the club for lunch on the last Tuesdayof each month, along with other retired players.

Congratulations to both these golfers. Theyare really long stayers, and the Blackwoodwomen golfers are very proud of them. ❐❐

IN SPITE of the housing and retail sectors ral-lying for a rate cut to spur on spending, manypeople in the financial industry view the deci-sion by the Reserve Bank of Australia to leavethe cash rate on hold at 3.0% as a positive.

“There are a number of encouraging signs inthe property market that should buoy positiveconsumer and business sentiment,” said LouiseStanton, a local Mortgage Choice franchiseowner.

“Although the official interest rate remainsstatic for the month ahead, Australians shouldtake a glass half-full view of the situation.Further rate cuts are expected in the comingmonths but for now, borrowers shouldn’t losesight of the fact that rates are at an historicallow and this is good news for anyone lookingto enter the property market,” explainedLouise.

“With rates low, it isn’t just those looking topurchase property that can capitalise on thebenefits. Those who already have a mortgagecan potentially make savings on their currentloan – they just need to know where to startand what changes to make.

“Mortgage holders should invest time toresearching and comparing their loan optionsto ensure they are still getting the best deal fortheir needs. You might find that you can switchlenders and save, or you can use the new foundinformation to negotiate a better deal with yourcurrent lender.

“Keep in mind, however, that if you applyfor loan pre-approval with another lender to

switch or to try to boost your negotiatingpower, it will be recorded in your credit fileand multiple loan applications can impact yourcredit rating and hence your ability to borrowin future.”

Louise reminded borrowers that they didn’tneed an official interest rate cut to help themrepay their loan sooner.

For those eager to make savings, she offeredthese top five tips for the month:1. Gather all the facts. Research the loan

options available in today’s market to ensurethat your loan is still the most suitable andcost effective for your needs.

2. Speak with a professional. If you don’t feelcomfortable heading into the loan marketalone, ask for professional help from a mort-gage broker who has good lender relation-ships and can use these to negotiate a betterdeal on your current loan or help you switchto a new loan with a different lender.

3. Budget to be in a better position. You mayfind that you can make savings elsewhere inyour budget.

4. Up the ante on repayments. Switching yourmonthly repayment to fortnightly may makea big difference.

5. Offset any concerns with savings.Depositing savings into an offset accountthat is attached to a home loan can help toreduce the interest accrued on a loan.

COROMANDEL Valley mum, Tarsha Cameron was inspired byher 8 year old daughter who was living between two houses, where the routines were entirely opposite and having to adaptto each setting. This is Tarsha’s personal journey...

“ I had been in a rut - not exercising, not eating well - andmy daughter's difficulties were getting more and more chal-lenging for me to handle because I was always feeling fatigued.

During this period I watched two of my friends, lose a greatamount of weight because they were eating healthier, and haddeveloped a hunger for activity. Eventually, I discovered thatthey both had joined Healthy Inspirations Blackwood.

So when I was ready to make a change because I couldn'tkeep up with my daughter, and my long term boyfriend pro-posed, I decided to give Healthy Inspirations a try.

When I first started in September 2011, I was greeted withwarmth by the personal trainers upon entry and introduced tothe Healthy Inspirations program, learning the science behindtheir weight loss plans.

Initially, my exercise regime consisted of occasionally walk-ing through the park, and attending a flamenco class once aweek. Now I go to the gym three times a week, attend multipledance classes, and enjoy running on a regular basis. I am running and I have never been a runner!

I lost 8.2kg, 39.5cm’s and 5.3% of my body fat and never looked back..And on top of all this I am feeling happier and more energetic, and am continuously supported to

look after myself (both physically and mentally) by the Healthy Inspirations team especially when Iam over stressed!

MORE than 50% of Australian adults and morethan 25% of primary school children are eitheroverweight or obese. Being overweight as achild increases the likelihood you will becomeoverweight as an adult and if coupled with badeating habits, this can be a death sentence.

Eating a diet high in fat (especially saturatedfat), sugar and kilojoules, coupled with littleexercise can increase not only the risk of becom-ing overweight but also can increase the risk ofdiabetes, heart disease and some cancers. Eatingan unhealthy diet and/or being overweight canalso have many short term consequences such asreduced concentration, energy and performancein school and sport.

Our eating habits as adults are affected bymany factors. From early on, our eating environ-ment and early education around food and exer-cise behaviours strongly influences our eatingand exercise habits and taste and food prefer-ences as adults. It is very important therefore toeducate our children and ourselves as early aspossible.

From early on,focus on exposingchildren to themany and variedtastes and texturesof healthy foods.Take them shop-ping and let them‘help’.

Involve them incooking with sim-ple things to begin

with to appreciate allaspects of food like pita pizza using vegies, leanham and cheese. (You can even make a face),wholemeal pancakes, popcorn, fruit jelly, yoghurt and banana-yoghurt smoothy.

Let them have their own vegetable patch (oreven a pot with tiny tomatoes). We are morelikely to eat our own produce and it tastes betteranyway!

Educate them on the immediate positiveaspects of eating healthy by explaining they willfeel better, have more energy and confidence, jump higher and run faster rather than talk aboutweight loss.

Do not limit altogether, fast food, high fat foodor sugar snacks like chocolate, cakes, chips orlollies.

Call them ‘sometimes’ foods – otherwise theymay binge when they’re out of sight or whenthey get older and can buy their own. Tell themwhen and how much they can have.

Make available at home, a tasty variety ofnutritious food choices and make less availablefoods high in kilojoules, fats and sugars like con-venience snack foods.
