What was the Blitz?

• Blitz is short for Blitzkrieg this is German for Lightning War.

• The Blitz was a period of intense bombing by the Germans over the cities of England.

• The Blitz lasted 57 continues nights.

Why Did The Blitz Start?

• The Blitz started because a Luftwaffe accidently missed is target, which was the ship docks, and hit London instead. We took quick action and bombed Berlin, Hitler was so angry he decided to make a new target, the cities of Britain.

• Barrage Balloons were lighter-than-air balloons that were flown over ships and important buildings, as a protection against low-flying aircraft.The balloons were tied down by a very strong cable, so the balloon was quite large. It is said any aircraft that dived too low to shoot or bomb a target would fly into this and crash

Gas masks where used so people could breath clear air if there was a gas attack (which there never was!) children had Mickey mouse gas masks so that they would wear them.

• ARP wardens had very important jobs there people who didn’t go to war but helped clear out bombed houses and looked for survivors. They also called the siren and the all clear.

• Evacuation in WWII was where children where children left the cities (or country) to live with relatives or host family's.

• Some evacuees where excited to go and thought of it as an adventure some where scared, depending on their home life.
