Introduction• The Blue-Billed Duck is also known as the Oxyura

Australis.Oxyura-Australis - is the scientific name for the Blue-Billed Duck.It is found in NSW,VIC,TAS and in some parts of QLD and WA.It isn’t a very common duck.One wetland it is found in is the Macquarie Marshes.

description• Male: The Blue-Billed Duck is a diving duck. Males have a large scooped light blue bill,

rich deep chestnut plumage. Dark head, the upper neck is an orange brown colour. The chest is white, it has a stiff upper tail and the males bill turns bright blue during breeding season.

• Female: The female has a brown bill and darker plumage than the male. It has narrow bands that are light brown, it has a black chin and a speckled black throat.

Diet• The blue-billed duck eats by surfacing or diving. It eats aquatic

insects such as chiromid fly lava, caddis flies, dragonflies, water beetles and duckweed. The most common feeding times for the Blue-Billed Duck is early morning and late afternoon.

Habitat• The Blue-Billed Duck is almost fully aquatic. It is seldom seen

on land.Usually seen in flocks of several individuals.It likes to live in large,deep,open freshwater.They like to live in dam in the Autumn.The Blue-Billed Duck spends daylight hours alone in small concealed bays with vegetation.

Life cycle • The Blue-Billed Duck starts off as an egg,when the egg hatches it is a

duckling ,then it becomes an adult duck,then mates,has an egg (if female) and then get old and dies.The maximum size for a Blue-Billed Duck is 44cm,the average size is 39cm,the average weight is 850g,the breeding season is variable usually August to November.There is usually 4 to 6 eggs in a clutch,the eggs spend 27 days in incubation and 35 days in the nest.
