Annual Report, 2015-16

Report of the

Governing Body for

year ended March 31,

2015

The Members of the

Governing Body are

delighted to present the

Annual Report and the

accounts for the year ended

March 31, 2016. The year

has been truly exciting and

fruitful with some amazing

wins for the animals we are here to serve. We also suffered some major losses during

the floods of December 2015 where thousands of animals died and suffered.

We were fortunate in being able to save several thousand animals with the amazing

help of our volunteers under the leadership of Dawn William. Needless to mention

that well overa thousand people were helped by us with our volunteers taking them in

our boat and inflatables and distributing water and food to them.

Chennai came together during the floods like never before and it is sad that it took a

disaster of this magnitude to show up what the people of Chennai could do if we all

work together.

The damage suffered to the infrastructure at our Guindy center is being slowly set

right but it will take another six months at least to finish the work.

The Platinum rating from GuideStar India - the highest rating for transparency for an

NGO – was renewed this year by Guide Star India.

The great help from the Marchig Animal Welfare Trust, VierPfoten, Bruno Memorial

Trust, CHAL-USA and the Rukmini Devi Arundale Trust has helped us rise to the next

level and we are deeply indebted to them.

In addition to the major donors mentioned above, the support in cash and kind from

tens of thousands of donors is what has made possible the expansion of our work.

We know you will be encouraged by our achievements listed in the body of this report

and thank all our supporters for your tireless commitment to the cause of animal

welfare.

World Animal Day

On the occasion of World Animal Day (WAD), October 4 each year, special programmes are held all over the world. While the reason behind WAD is to remind everyone to be kind to animals, we must be kind all the time. The Blue Cross of India has been observing WAD since 2009, among other things, special blessings at various houses of worship for the animals we are obliged to care for.

This year, we had special prayers at two Ganesha temples; one mosque and one Catholic Church.

These 24 hours are the chance to give back and celebrate animal life in all its shapes and sizes, from mice to elephants, and recognize the positive influence they have on our lives. World Animal Day is a time to celebrate and appreciate our relationship with the animals that share our planet and the ways in which they enrich our lives. A Big Thanks to all who participated and supported us extensively and special thanks to the pet owners who brought their pets and it was amazing to see all the animals (Cattle, Calf, Goat, Donkey, Dogs, Cat and Cock) together under one roof.

TRAUMA FROM THE EYES OF AN ANIMAL “No one could hear my screams. That’s when I realised, I was no more but I was able to see

everything. I watched everything happen, the efforts that went in vain, the efforts that paid off in

flying colours all aimed at SAVING ANIMALS. I am truly grateful to the BCI.”

On 12th of March 2016, couple of Buffaloes were grazing through the fields and going on with their

lives, but before they knew it something tragic happened. They underwent a severe accident and they

were hit by a speeding electric train near the Fort Railway Station. All four were severely injured and

one of them died immediately. We received a call and our rescue team reached the place

immediately and with the help of C-1 Flower Bazaar police station Sub-Inspector N.C. Saravanan, the

rescue was planned by the BCI Team, with ropes and tight knots, the buffalos were rigged upwards

(almost 60 feet in height) towards the hydraulic ambulance on the bridge. Apart from this herculean

task our volunteers had to fight with the butchers to take the buffaloes to our facility for treatment as

they required immediate medical attention, Dr.Banupriya never gave up on them and fought for them

and treated them and unfortunately, one of them didn’t survive the accident, she suffered multiple

limb and spinal fractures. A police complaint was filed in the Government Railway Police Station.

ON GOOD FRIDAY DOING GOOD DEEDS FOR ANIMALS...DOG IN THE

WELL When you do something for an animal which can’t help itself you generate many blessings. It is the

feeling that you get that time which makes life worth living.

On March 25, 2016, at around 12:00 hours after returning from a Rat Snake rescue in Selaiyur BCI

Volunteer Mr. Kavin received a call stating that a dog had fallen into a blind well two days back and

many people attempted to rescue the dog but failed. Without wasting any time further the BCI

volunteer team-Kavin, Santosh, Vignesh, and Kumersan rushed to the site of rescue at Tamil Nadu

Golf club at Nandanam.

They found the dog standing in about one foot of dirty mossy water. She was weak and famished. It’s

pretty obvious with no food and nowhere to move the dog must have been very tired of standing,

weak and hungry too. Vignesh and Kumersan held on to the rope while Santosh held the butterfly net

and Kavin entered the well, Kavin put the string around her neck with great care and grabbed the

poor dog right out of the dirty mossy water to land finally. She was treated at BCI by our panel of fine

dedicated doctors. Thanks to BCI volunteer team who made this rescue a successful one.

EVERY HOLIDAY IS A BUSY HOLIDAY AT BCI... Respect nature and you are respecting life. We often think they are invading into our homes but sadly it’s we humans who have invaded into their homes. On March 24, 2016, at about 07:00 hrs BCI received a call from a learned gentleman from 5th street Manikanapuram, Thirumullaivoyal stating that a small snake fell into a well and will drown if we don't

Page 22: The Blue Cross of India...the floods of December 2015 where thousands of animals died and suffered. ... Chennai came together during the floods like never before and it is sad that

rescue her. BCI volunteer Kiran rushed for the rescue. The well was a blind well with about twenty

feet of water almost to the brim. On his arrival he discovered that the snake was a spectacle baby Cobra which was terrified itself. If Mr. Kiran hadn't acting quickly there are chances that the spectacle baby cobra would drown, as it can’t remain in water for long.. Kiran immediately used the staff to grip the baby cobra and very carefully patiently lure it into a gunny bag .Later she was released into the nearby forest area. https://www.facebook.com/bluecrossofindia .

Chennai is a hub for exotic bird trade-Black headed Munias sold at

Koyambedu market. Why did the lady deny to handover the bird, why did the man get into this business? It’s a clear sign of human greed & lack of awareness amongst public. Layman thinks he can feed the little life better, protect it from other animals, give it all their love and pamper it as a family member. People like this man make it their source of living. On 24th March 2016, Our Residential Manager Mr. Dawn received a call from one of his volunteers stating that he noticed a man selling birds at the Koyambedu market area. Volunteers Kiran, Santosh, Selva & Vanathi took position at the spot. They found a person with 28 pairs of black headed Munias. These black headed Munias are also known as Chestnut Munia & are about 11-12cm in length. It’s a small gregarious bird which feeds mainly on grain and other seeds. The man noticed our volunteers closing on him; he flung the cages with birds on the road & flew off the place. Kiran jumped the Koyambedu market wall while Santosh chased him down the street for about a kilometer & they finally caught him.

Meantime attempts were made to recover a pair of birds from a lady who had just purchased them from this man; she refused to hand them over. But volunteers called the Police & took necessary action. The man was handed over to the K-10 Koyambedu police and a complaint was registered against him.. The birds were brought to our hospital and treated as they were weak and handed over to the Veterinary Hospital at Vandalur Zoo (Arignar Anna Zoological Park) in Chennai after treatment– https://www.facebook.com/bluecrossofindia .

When someone else's pain starts bothering you, is it for the right

reasons? When a human screams pain, we take initiative to help them. The scream of an animal in pain sounds the same. We should not let the scream fade away.

BCI received a call in the middle

of the night from an obnoxious

person from Pattabiram stating

that a cat had fallen into an old

well near his house. The cat is

screaming at the top of her voice

and it is disturbing his sleep. Mr.

Daniel who was spending the

night with a friend in the wild was

informed. They both rushed to

the address and found that the

kitten had found herself a small

hole in the rocky deep dirty well

that was about 50 feet deep. She kept crying for help and Daniel did not delay in rescuing her. The

informer felt guilty in seeing the effort put by the volunteers and later apologized for his behavior.

Today was a good day!

On March 18, 2016 at around 07:00 am we received a call from a man named Mr. Raja of Chromepet. He reported that a cat had fallen into a well and was almost drowning. The timing was almost perfect since one of our volunteers Mr. Daniel who was training with ropes at that moment (universe does coincide things after all!) rushed to the spot. He was right in time to save the cat that was almost drowning. He rappelled down the 30 feet well who's walls was covered in green moss. Once he reached the bottom of the well, he extended his leg so that the cat could climb onto him. The cat was then placed in a net which Mr. Raja pulled up. The cat suffered minor injuries and she was brought to our Hospital & Shelter and treated and now she is more than alright! https://www.facebook.com/bluecrossofindia .

For the betterment of the world around us.

"There are some who fear, there are some who are kind. Fear always chooses. Kindness never chooses."

On March 18 at 12:35pm, as you know Blue Cross of India actively takes part in animal rescues and constantly works towards the betterment of animals. After the 2015 flood in Chennai, many areas remained stagnated with water for days! Fishermen used that opportunity to launch their nets to catch fish. These nets are highly hazardous to the animals that live in these waters. The informer was a corporation sanitary worker and he stated that a small snake was caught in fishing net and unable to break free. Our Volunteers Mr. Satish and Mr. Santhosh paced to the location and found a small cobra about 4 feet in length, stuck in fishing net. The sanitary worker purchased an egg and was trying to let the snake eat it. He stated that if the snake eats the egg, she will become stronger and break the net and shall be free. A very kind intention indeed! Satish and Santosh cut the net and set the snake free. https://www.facebook.com/bluecrossofindia . We're proud to say that our staff and volunteers who are well trained in animal handling have carried out daring rescue operations successfully. One such incident was the rescue of a snake post the flood situation.

IS IGNORANCE REALLY BLISS?

“To error is human”, they said. “Ignorance is bliss”, they said. “Don’t ignore your errors”, they never said. “Flight is what birds long for” - Tennessee Williams

March 14 at 8:20pm - This is yet another story of the negligent behaviour of human kind which has caused distress to other living creatures in this planet. BCI received a call from a volunteer about a crow severely tangled in Manja (Kite flying thread). The poor creature was stuck there for two days. Mr. Tayjul and Mr. Rakaibul went for the rescue. Mr. Tayjul vigilantly released the manja thread (which could have possibly cut the crow in half). The crow immediately perched onto an adjacent Neem Tree. Mr. Rakainul climbed up the Neem tree and brought the crow down to safety. The thread was safely removed and the crow was brought to BCI for treatment. She was released after healing completely a few days later... https://www.facebook.com/bluecrossofindia .

Grumpy, moody and very aggressive cat rescued

On June 22, 2015 we received a call from a gentleman stating that a cat had fallen into a deep well. The Volunteer Mr. Vijay, college student and an animal rescuer extraordinaire rushed to the spot. The cat had fallen in a 60 feet blind well, the ground was very muddy and the walls were too smooth to climb. Our volunteer Vijay quickly rappelled down the well; the cat did not make matters easy. The cat was in a grumpy mood and very aggressive but with all the training the volunteers in BCI go through, the rescue went on without a hitch. The cat was pulled out of the well and now is in need of not only medical attention but also a good long bath. Dr.Anca Vet surgeon from VIER PFOTEN donated the rappelling kit that we used. A Big Thanks to her!! https://www.facebook.com/bluecrossofindia .

On Sunday, March 20th at 7:47am Blue Cross of India received an emergency call from the Executive Magistrate Mr. Thirumaran asking BCI to rush to the C-1 Flower Bazaar police station to save few animals. Our GM zoomed off immediately with Daniel, Blue Cross volunteer. On reaching the C-1 Flower Bazaar Police station we discovered to our amazement there were two people who had two bags containing Black pond turtles and each turtle were tightly bound in dirty synthetic cloth preventing them from breathing and moving properly. Immediately Daniel got them out of those dirty synthetic cloth and sprinkled water on them, we had requested the Inspector to depute a police constable along the BCI ambulance and the two culprits so that they could be safely handed over to the Forest Department. But before that we had to bring the turtles to BCI where our efficient and dedicated doctors had to check the health conditions of the Black Pond Turtles. They found the turtles to be dehydrated and famished. The accused culprits and their belongings were all handed over to the forest department. https://www.facebook.com/bluecrossofindia .

Rescue of a dog that had gotten herself stuck in the freshly-laid asphalt

She has a wonderful personality, and it is no wonder that her community in Kodambakkam misses her. We too missed seeing her bobbing gracefully behind Muneer as he goes about his duties, once she returned to her community. On the 20th of December 2015, Mr. Ajith from Kodambakkam reported that a dog had gotten herself stuck in the freshly-laid asphalt. Our rescue team understood the gravity of the situation and advised the caller as to how to pull her out safely (cooling her skin while lifting her out with the tar) but the locals, not wanting to get their hands dirty with the tar, removed her by wrapping her in a plastic sack. In the meantime our ambulance rushed to the spot and pulling her out of the tar was the first critical aspect of the operation, but by the time she was out, a lot of the asphalt and plastic had bonded to her skin. The animal caregiver that had gone on the rescue, Muneer Uddin, did not mess around with the plastic, but instead purchased a couple of 20-litre barrels of drinking water and proceeded to constantly keep pouring a little at the time on the dog, to keep her cool and brought her to our Guindy facility; it took 3 hours for 2 Vets to remove all the plastic and asphalt. The dog was in poor health, most likely from inhaling a lot of the asphalt fumes. Her skin was also, predictably, much

New Year dawns a new life to the DOG! Dog rescued from a 50 feet

dry well at Chengalpattu Dog being rescued from a 40, 60, 80 and 100 feet well… It lifts one’s heart to see people risking their own lives to save other lives.

January 1 · On the New year - A dog had fallen into a well near Chengalpattu, and went unnoticed for four days. The well owner eventually found the dog in the well alive and started to feed him daily. He alerted the Blue cross, and one of the Blue Cross staff members Taijul rushed to the spot. The well was a 50 feet dry well. Taijul who is well trained in rescues, rappelled down the well and rescued the dog with just a net and a rope. Despite the 50 feet free fall into the well, luckily the dog was rescued unharmed and safely

released. https://www.facebook.com/bluecrossofindia .

A spell-binding save indeed! It is because of us humans and our selfish behaviour innocent animals are forced to suffer.

On June 24, 2015 ·We received a call from a person in Perambakkam stating that a cow had fallen into a septic tank in their apartment complex. A rescue team of brave and strong volunteers of BCI immediately rushed to the sight to their surprise they found out that the cow had fallen into a deep septic tank of an incomplete apartment complex which was almost fully occupied. The septic tank had about three feet of sewage and the cow was stuck inside for more than 24 hours. The owners of the flats hired few people to remove the cow however they were partially drunk. In their attempt to save the cow, they dropped the cow again in human feces unable to pull the cow up. The cow was now severely hurt and its legs were warbling making it difficult for her to stand. Fortunately our mighty rescuers Daniel and Sateesh were there and jumped into the septic tank and held her up, preventing her from sinking or drowning. Rabul and Kayrsul also jumped in and used ropes to bind her. On top Velu, Pavithran, Jagdesh, Samy and Vijay were holding her. After all ropes were secured she was pulled out. The rescue was extremely difficult due to the horrible state of the tank, the weak condition of the cow and her weight making it even more difficult to pull her up. Despite all of this our volunteers executed this daunting rescue without any flaws. The cow was brought to Blue Cross for treatment. On her arrival she was very sick and had high fever. Fortunately she is doing quite well now. https://www.facebook.com/bluecrossofindia .

Child's play brings an animal quite near death It is beyond comprehension how something as elementary as child's play brings an animal quite near death, simply because humans are unwilling to show humanity.

On the 29th of May, Blue Cross received an emergency call from Kotturpuram reporting that two piglets were chasing each other through a small residential area when one of them ran ahead and through a narrow gap and rammed his snout against a wall. While the piglet bled out and cried in pain, the other rushed through the gap to inspect him and got caught. Neither of the piglets could make it out of the vent. Having gotten themselves jammed in between a compound wall and the wall of a house. The gap was six inches wide at it's mouth and tapered down thereon. When Mr. Williams reached the site, he rationally explained to the residents why and how he'd have to break through the wall to save the animals. Both neighbors were appalled and furious at his request and to add to the juvenility of the scenario began to pick a street fight. A frustrated Mr. Williams brought in two senior police men (Sub inspector - Mr. Palanisamy and Administrative officer- Mr. Rajesh Kannan) who attempted to neutralise the situation. However, the neighbors refused to make concessions. Finally, after a few hours, Mr. D. Madhusudhan (an advocate at the Madras High Court) patiently struck a happy medium with both neighbors and allowed Mr.Williams to break the wall. He slid his hands through the aperture, lifted the piglets out and had them sent to Blue Cross immediately. They are now recovering from the incident and their wounds rapidly and are back to being cheery and playful. https://www.facebook.com/bluecrossofindia

Horn locked buffalos

On 7th March we received a call from a gentleman from Gandhi Nagar, Madipakkam stating that two female buffalo's had been fighting and got their horns locked in the same position for the past four hours We had attended several rescues in the past were buffalo's had their horns locked and generally one or even both die. Our GM Dawn Williams along with a team of volunteers and Dr. Dargos from Four Paws rushed to the site. As seen in the picture the white buffalo had her horn under the throat of the black buffalo and the black buffalo had her horn piercing the upper neck of the white buffalo. Dawn being a specialist in ropes and knots and a master handler the buffaloes were secured properly and he used all his skills to cut the white buffalo's horn about five inches and released them. Not many people risk attending such rescues. Both buffalo's were released from their lock and sent apart and are free now. https://www.facebook.com/bluecrossofindia

"Saving an animal won't change the world, but it'll sure change his

world" The worst part of the whole rescue was the greedy manner in which close to 40 different parties all claimed ownership of the cow, every single one with the intention of selling her to a butcher. On the 24th of August, 2015, at about 15:15 hours, Police Head Constable Mr. Karthikeyan of Ambathur informed the Blue Cross of India that a cow had fallen into a 20-foot well in Ekambaram Nagar, Ambathur. Dawn William, our General Manager, realized that many hands would be required for this rescue and got in touch with and obtained the services of volunteers Satish, Santosh, Kishore, Vijay, Kiran, Pavithran, and Prem. Upon reaching the site of the incident, they found that the Fire and Rescue department were already there. Collectively, Blue Cross of India volunteers and the Fire Department pulled the cow out of the well. She had sustained some major scrapes and cuts to her body and legs. After the cow was pulled out, several people began to claim ownership over her, and

several others insisted that everyone was lying. Not having any choice in the matter, Dawn filed a police complaint at the T-1 Ambathur Police Station against the owner of the cow under sections 289 IPC, 429 IPC, 268 IPC, and the PCA Act of 1960. The cow was brought to Blue Cross of India’s facility for treatment, where Dr. Harish found her to be in an advanced stage of pregnancy, while also suffering from a dangerously high fever. We were not sure whether she will make it after suffering such an

ordeal while being in such a delicate condition. Fortunately she recovered and delivered a calf at our shelter and she is happy with her calf at BCI........ The Blue Cross of India thanks Head Constable Karthikeyan and all the personnel of T-1 Ambathur Police Station for their prompt action in calling us as well as assistance with the crowd of self-proclaimed owners of the cow. https://www.facebook.com/bluecrossofindia

On the 28th of June BCI received an alarming call from a surprisingly casual informant. We were informed that a kitten had fallen into a well. The informant provided the directions to the rescue team haphazardly and the BCI rescue team reached the area where the well was soon. The well was a pit of danger itself as it was not just the possibility of the kitten drowning but also that of getting injured by the many bits of planks and even a flowerpot that was on the well. The BCI volunteers first had to clear up the trash in and around the well. They were shocked to see a kitten drowning in the well considering how cool the informant had been. Sateesh, one of the members of the BCI rescue team acted fast and got into the well immediately to save the kitten in crisis. Sateesh entered the cavernous well which was 35 feet of darkness. He rescued the kitten and kept her in his t-shirt until they were safely out of the well and the dark. Sateesh saved the kitten with his brave, selfless actions and his special training. A Big thanks to him and Velu for his assistance. https://www.facebook.com/bluecrossofindia

Kingfisher chicks stuck in well On Sunday, the 7th of June, Blue Cross of India received a rescue call from Mr. Murugan from Ambathur. Mr. Murugan informed Blue Cross that there were four Kingfisher mid chicks stuck in his backyard well. The kingfisher chicks had perched on the edge of the well and when they had attempted to fly off, the chicks fell into the well which was 80 feet deep. Mr. Murugan did not just call Blue Cross, but also attempted to rescue the chicks, by dropping a bucket and then a bag. But the failed rescue attempt only traumatized the trapped chicks, of which only three were still alive. The BCI

rescue team hurried, and reached the area of crisis. Mr. Sateesh, a rescue volunteer then descended down the well and rescued the remaining three tricoloured kingfishers. Mr. Sateesh was assisted by the rest of the dedicated rescue team comprising of Kiran, Kevin, Velu, Deepak, Advil, Pavithiran and Vijay. Mr. Murugan must also be appreciated for his presence of mind. This rescue team, filled with courage and experience, is definitely one to be proud of. Though this may seem like quite the adventurous day, it is a normal day for the people at Blue Cross of India who spend their time saving our animal friends in need. https://www.facebook.com/bluecrossofindia

On June 8, 2015, BCI received an emergency call from a small industry in Chengalpattu reporting that a half grown monkey who was hanging and jumping over the electric cables got electrocuted. This rescue story unlike the others involves a wild animal which test the skills of our volunteers. Mr. Arun Prasad a BCI volunteer working in Accenture was informed about the injured monkey and immediately rushed to Chengalpattu to rescue him. However Mr. Prasad had a difficult task lying in front of him. The sparks of the electric cables blinded the monkey causing him to become

very aggressive and hostile. He used all his compassionate skills to help soothe and relax the monkey. Train hits a cow

May 27, 2015 · Our Master trainer Mr. Dawn Williams received a call from the station master of Perungalathur stating that a speeding train near Prangalathur, close to the Vandalur flyover hit a cow. There weren’t any open injuries but the poor cow could not stand up. Luckily for her the public moved her away from the track lest another train hit her. Unfortunately due her condition she rolled down a slope and fell into a sewage drain. Whoever the owners were, they did not claim ownership of the cow due to the fear that the railway authorities will make them pay a fine. However, as per the railway act, the railways are allowed to auction the injured or dead animal to butchers. The good news is that since the BCI are rescuing wounded animals, the stationmasters usually inform BCI. To prevent such accidents from happening, the railway track is walled off from the main road to prevent both humans and animals from crossing the track but cattle owners leave their cattle in the green grass on the other side of the track. BCI volunteers Adhil, two Bharati scout volunteers and Dawn William went to rescue the cow. On reaching the site, the railway staff told them that the cow has been in the sewage drain for a whole night! Getting the cow out proved to be tougher than expected. They first decided to bind the cow and pull her out. This plan turned out to be impossible. Now, just as the saying goes- when life gives you lemons, make lemonade. Our rescuers found a hole in the wall near the cow. They broke it, thereby making the hole big enough for a cow to pass through. The cow

Rescued an Olive Ridley

For too long has humanity looked only at humanity’s own convenience, and thought very little about pillaging nature and destroying our fellow earthlings.

On Saturday the 30th of January at about 16:00 hours, the Blue Cross of India received a call from Ms. Sagari stating that an injured turtle was washed ashore on Marina Beach, across from the Ice House, and that people were trying to throw her back into the water. BCI volunteer Velu, who stays nearby, was informed and he immediately rushed over to the spot. He found one already dead turtle washed ashore with her shell broken and one other, a gorgeous and mature Olive Ridley was alive, but with her shell broken in several places and one of her left flippers sliced off. It seems likely that she was injured either by a fishing trawler, or while trying to get away from one. Our volunteers Kiran and Srikanth in the meantime rushed to the spot. They first dipped towels that they had taken with them in the water and squeezed it over the turtle, keeping her wet. They then used one towel as a stretcher and carried her to the waiting ambulance. The turtle was treated at our Guindy facility and handed over to the Wildlife Department for further treatment and rehabilitation. https://www.facebook.com/bluecrossofindia

September 26, 2015 :

It is with the deepest regret that we heard of the passing away of Swami Dayananda Saraswathi - a life member of the Blue Cross of India for over 35 years and a regular donor.

“The great successes of this great sanyasi, molded in the ancient traditions of India, is not, however, as well-known as he himself was. That also demonstrated the high point of his personality - humility. Maharishi Aurobindo said that the greatest achievements have been least noisy. This aptly applied to Swami Dayananda’s work and life. In his demise, Hindu philosophy has lost its greatest exponent of recent times, Hindu religion one of its staunchest defenders, and the nation a great patriot saint."

Conclusion

The work of the Blue Cross has increased tremendously in the last few years. Numerous animals injured in rail or road accidents or young puppies and kittens separated from their mothers are rescued by us each year. Thousands of ABC/AR operations on dogs and several hundred on cats are carried out. Numerous of injured and sick animals are in our shelters at any time. The floods of December 2015 have been another major setback to our infrastructure development.

In spite of so much of our work being done by volunteers, the running of so massive an operation needs a lot of money. It is, therefore, with many thanks that we acknowledge the generous help of our supporters without whose help the above work would not have been possible.
