The circulatory systemThe body’s transportation network
Things you should know about the circulatory system
It consists mainly of the heart, blood vessels and blood
The heartThe heart is a four chambered pump that keeps
blood moving every minute of your lifeThe heart has valves that keep the blood moving
in the right direction
Three types of blood vessels arteries – carry blood away from the heartVeins- carry blood back to the heart; also
contain valvesCapillaries- exchange nutrients, waste, oxygen
and Carbon dioxide with the cells
Four main components of bloodRed blood cells (RBC) which carry OxygenWhite blood cells (WBC) which fight diseasePlatelets which help clot bloodPlasma which is the watery part of the blood
that dissolves nutrients and keeps the blood moving
There are four main blood groups A- contains A antigens but not BB- contains B antigens but not AAB- contains both A and B antigensO- does not contain A or B antigensBlood is further classified as Positive (+) or
negative (-) by the Rh antigen. + has the Rh factor, - does not.
Interactions The circulatory system works with the
respiratory system to deliver the Oxygen to the cells
The circulatory system works with the excretory system to filter out wastes from the blood
All systems rely on the circulation of blood for nutrients and oxygen.
specific things you can do to protect the health of your circulatory system.
Eat a balanced diet Participate consistently in aerobic exercisePractice stress management Avoid substance abuse (steroids, some allergy
medications, amphetamines, smoking, etc.)
The heartThe heart is a four chambered, muscular organ
that is responsible for providing the pumping power to move blood through the body.
The heart muscle is called myocardium and is made of cardiac muscle.
**On the pictures, right is left and left is right. (because it is from the perspective of being in your chest)
Circulation The heart is the
pump that circulates the blood to the body.

What is meant by the “two loops” pattern of blood flow? Loop 1- heart to lungs and back to heartLoop 2- heart to body and back to heart
Three type of blood vesselsArteries- carry blood away from heart
Thicker, more smooth muscle tissueVeins- carry blood to heart
Has valves to prevent backflowCapillaries- nutrient/ waste- O2/ CO2 exchange
Blood- main partsRed blood cells-
carry oxygen
White blood cells- fight disease
Platelets- forms blood clots
Plasma- liquid: hydration
What is blood pressure? The pressure exerted outward by the blood on
the arteries
What is high blood pressure? (Hypertension)When the blood pressure gets over a normal
range and puts to much pressure on the system. Baseline pressure for hypertension is 140/90
