I often liken the experience of visiting Design Days Dubai to my own journeys around the world, seeking out new talent, meeting galleries and witnessing fresh design initiatives. Design Days Dubai is a similar journey of discovery, full of exciting and stimulating new designs, concepts and stories from far-flung corners of the globe. All of these are brought together with a wealth of local and regional talent to celebrate the sheer diversity of global design and I believe that diversity is the lifeblood of Design Days Dubai. In addition to captivating collectors and denizens of the design world, we also view the extensive public programme as a pivotal part of Design Days Dubais diverse voyage of discovery. Throughout the fair, daily workshops, talks, live performances and installations supported by our Strategic Partner Dubai Culture and Arts Authority and Dubai Design District (d3), help widen the public understanding of both the design process and the spirit of collectible design. We feel honoured for the continued patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai. His endorsement underlines how design creates culture, which in turn shapes the values that determine the future of our city. This very special fair requires an outstanding venue and we thank our sponsor Emaar for hosting us in the vibrant setting of Downtown Dubai. We also thank our valued sponsor Van Cleef & Arpels, who will debut its dazzling new collection, Pierres de Caractre Variations for the first time in the region at Design Days Dubai. In association with Tashkeel, Van Cleef & Arpels has also supported the Middle East Emergent Artist Prize for its third year. We are also delighted that sponsor Audi Middle East will host the Audi Lounge for the first time at this edition, a stylish and exclusive venue where collectors can relax between seminars or enriching journeys around the many global galleries. We are proud of the opportunity for diverse discovery that Design Days Dubai brings to its visitors and I very much hope you enjoy this editions rich journey.

    Audi Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

Great design is the way we envision our future and for the fourth edition of Design Days Dubai, we look forward to seeing fantastic creativity and innovation. Audi design is progressive and highly emotional; it expresses the technological competence and quality claim of our brand perfectly. Our designers seek inspiration in everything they do and authenticity is key. Audi stands for sportiness, lightweight design and the quattro permanent all-wheel drive so when we design an Audi, we express this know-how in a new form and we put the sportiest car in the premium segment on wheels.

The Audi designers, not unlike an artist, have to have their fingers on the pulse of the times and are guided by a variety of influences be it from nature, architecture, art or film.

As global design patron and responsible employer, Audi supports regional cultural arts at its locations. For the fourth year the brand with the four rings is an exclusive sponsor of Design Days Dubai, which will showcase the path-breaking works of leading design galleries and the most innovative of designers from around the world.

  • Nada Debs A 10 Year Journey

I never thought that I would end up in the position I am today. When I started designing furniture, it was just something to do on my free weekends in a small town in upstate New York. So here I am, celebrating 10 full years of Nada Debs, a brand that has so many missions that I don't know where to start!

I think my passion was really first ignited many years ago when I took a furniture design course at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD.) Ill never forget the excitement of going from workshop to workshop, trying to pick materials out for my final projectI managed to get an A+ so I guess my destiny was already brewing then. Another early pivotal moment was visiting the first ever International Contemporary Furniture Fair in NYC. It was 1988 and there were only a few furniture stands and I longed to be amongst them. I made it 15 years later when I launched my Floating Stools, which were bought by Columbia Pictures and ended up in Eva Mendes apartment in the film Hitch starring Will Smith! Following that I moved to London where the contemporary design scene was also beginning to boom. I visited the first modern furniture fair, 100% Design and again, many years later, found myself exhibiting my work there too.

So, what makes me tick? I have always been searching for a meaning in design. Was it enough just to make something look good? No, actually, it wasnt for me. And that meaning had to be justified. At the beginning I realised I was looking to create designs that every single person /human being could relate to. I wanted to please everyone with my work and I wondered how could I find a formula for that! I found the answer in the universal language of geometry, and in craft. Those two elements gave me justification for my work. Everyone can relate to geometry, whether we live in Asia, America or the Middle East. A circle is a circle, a square is a square; we all get it. The infinite patterns derived from geometry are mesmerizing in an emotional, spiritual and satisfying way. I can express certain emotional elements through design and that, for me, validated being a designer.

I didnt realise how much my upbringing in Japan had influenced me until I started to create furniture in the Middle East. When I moved to the region 15 years ago, I viewed locally made furniture as old-fashioned and couldnt believe that the industry had never been moved forward. By coincidence a friend asked me to make a contemporary piece for a Lebanese restaurant in London. I took this opportunity to visit Damascus to see how the craftsmen there produced inlay work. It took me several trips to find a workshop that would welcome me and share their secrets. Entering through a small door, I was astonished to find an actual Aladdins Cave! It led to a huge workshop filled with men inlaying, cutting, sanding, and working with intricacy. My heart skipped a beat. Every time I approached a craftsman, he would show me his work with love and pride. I wondered if I was the only one who saw the beauty, the patience, and the dedication that went into the craft. I wanted to share this with the whole world - and I wondered how I could do it without simply repeating what had been done before. Traditionally, the craftsmen would treat traditional 18th

century-style European furniture pieces such as a chest of drawers or a chair and craft a mother of pearl inlay upon it. I wondered if I could take a more simple style furniture, something more rectilinear, the style I was used to from my upbringing in Japan and apply this craft on that. Would people notice the beauty of the workmanship then? So I tried. I asked the craftsman to refrain from crafting floral designs and instead inlay a series of circles next to each other. What? Are you sure you want to do that? they asked. Yes, Im sure, I replied. And thats how I got my first drawer front.

I took it to Beirut, used it on a simple bedside table and all of a sudden I saw that I was able to fuse the two cultures into one. I understood that is was possible to have two opposing forces Zen and Oriental - working together! Then I realised that fusion was exactly like me. Im both Japanese and Arab and I exist - my furniture became the answer to my personal identity crisis of belonging to more than one culture. The rest is history. The furniture took on a life of its own. The patterns on the craft are endless, the forms simple and I created a new Arab identity in furniture design.

What also drives me is the fact that I wanted Middle Easterners to be proud of our heritage and of local manufacturing. And through designing functional objects, I felt I was able to reach the masses. A tray here, side tables there, a tea box as a gift everyone, from every culture, appreciated the style of my work. The arabesque patterns derived from Islamic geometry remind us who we are, where we came from and how our origins in mathematics and geometry has inspired the rest of the world.

As well as merging opposing aesthetic philosophies such as Asian and the Middle East, I also like to merge different materials such as concrete which is manmade, inlayed mother-of-pearl that is organic. Past versus present, manmade versus organic, fluid forms versus rectilinear forms, technology versus craft; always searching for balance and harmony among oppositesthat really has become the epitome of my work.

So what next? Well, it is about pushing the boundaries of craft, of my business and allowing people to see that design and craft work well together. It is about making the craft found in the Middle East desirable and it is about celebrating this great art made by the human hand, the hours it entails and how much love is put into the work. It is impossible to produce such intricate work without putting in the hours of attention it requires and I believe that people do feel the love that has been channeled into my designs or products. Its not just about the design; its about the energy that comes out of the craft.

With the dawn of spiritual awareness these days, I feel that my mission is to bring out the spirituality within craft and evoke the feeling of love through the work of the human hand. Working with our hands brings out an element of peace and if we can get more people to appreciate this, then we can get more people take up these artisanal crafts. Maybe then, we will be more at peace with ourselves. How beautiful is that?

Maitha Al Mazrooei Towards an evolving industry

Within the last three years there has a concerted effort to actively fund, commission and host a wide spectrum design projects within Dubai. The diversity of these projects is a direct result of the growing cycle of collaborations and creative designers based in the city and the intent has been refreshingly experimental.

The design movement in the emirate is in an investigational cycle, where the participants within the local industry are attempting to carve a niche and leave a mark. What gives it character is the network and array of collaborations that occur at different points during the design process. The trickle effect, back and forth between retailers, exhibitors, designers and manufacturers is a primary stepping-stone towards a matured design infrastructure.

The growth of locally-based designers is directly linked to the progression of design education in the UAE. Cross-disciplinary school and college programmes, that began around 2003 in fields from architecture through to multimedia design and fashion has allowed for an increased level of productivity in these and related fields. Over the years, quality has been filtered as a result of healthy competition through exhibitions and awards, contributing towards an ever-evolving design field. In return the schools and programmess support their students through international and local outreach opportunities. As these institutions progress and grow in their efforts the intentions of the designers have become clear and more specific.

The threshold between education and an established design studio comes in the form of creative spaces such as Tashkeel, and the previous Shelter. The spaces acted as a base for up and coming designers, they are environments that truly foster collaborations with like-minded creatives - a makers space. The individuals stemming from distinct design disciplines provide additional value through a continuous dialogue of filtering and editing, evolving the design process. As a result of continued experimentation, design collectives such as Mobius Design House have formed. They have greatly shaped and continue to impact the local design scene by fostering designers from multiple disciplines working in various mediums. Together, their professional backgrounds allow for a multifaceted base that will lead to a well-rounded industry.

The ability for local designers to graduate to their own private working studio has been slow in the city and only a small number of have managed to venture off on their own and sustain themselves. Although commissioned projects are important in nurturing regional designers, they are temporary initiatives towards a more viable profession. The opportunity to exhibit products both locally and internationally are numerous, as are the platforms for showing at local design fairs and curated exhibitions. They allow participating designers to communicate with a potential audience and through the prototypes exhibited, retailers can grasp the spectrum and level of production in the city.

This point leads to the issue of production, quality and availability of material. Production facilities are endless, yet the difficulty lies in the ability to locate manufacturers that provide a high level of craft. Therefore the attempt to mass-produce has its limitations and constraints. Until the local production facilities catch up with the designers the quality will lag behind.

The design cycle is ongoing with multiple points of entry for all participating entities - designers, programmess, retailers and fairs - that are interlinked and vital to developing a design base. The pace of productivity will dictate the direction. The integrity of the industry will start to surface and the intentions will refine, coming to a full circle once all factors integrate progressively.

1971 - DESIGN SPACESharjah / United arab emirateS

1971 is a multi-functional design space dedicated to exhibition, display and discussion on all forms of contemporary design ranging from graphics, furniture and interiors to interactive design and new design technologies. Through a mixture of curated exhibitions and public programmes, 1971 aims to become a regional and international design hub working closely with local designers, architects, schools and universities. 1971 also services as an informal meeting venue and includes a fully serviced cafe.

The gallerys installation for Design Days Dubai is an attempt to showcase a physical representation of the graphical process underlying the formation of arabesque patterns. These patterns are normally generated through intercrossing circular foundations. Arranged systematically on a surface expanse, the circles, their tangents and intersections then form the basis of an endless array complex arabesque patterns.

Through movement, the simple circular roots of the complex arabesque patterns are in juxtaposition, creating yet an altogether new dimension of representation that brings antonyms (such as chaos and order, simplicity and complexity) much closer to each other.

Aljoud Lootah is a multi-disciplinary designer based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, whose work explores the realms of product design and bespoke corporate gifts.

With a keen interest in the idea of contrasts in form and function, Aljoud Lootah composes her creations by mixing traditional silhouettes and concepts with modern elements. Patterns, folds and geometric shapes are at the heart of her inspiration. Her creative drive comes from a passion for detail, aesthetics, and experimental approaches to materials and techniques.

For Design Days Dubai 2015, these interests are further explored through the use of forms and patterns. In The Oru Series, a collection of geometric furniture and decorative objects, pieces take inspiration from origami forms. The name Oru originates from the Japanese words to fold, and the idea behind the designs is to show that folding a flat, two-dimensional sheet can create aesthetically appealing functional three-dimensional forms. The multi-faceted products with their complex folds coupled with sophisticated simplicity, are a modern interpretation of an ancient form of art.

Since its founding in Beirut in 1998, Ardeco has created a unique environment in its 500 square metre gallery. Furniture, lighting, and decorative items from the 1930's to the 1970's, collected from France blend harmoniously with contemporary high-end French furniture brands such as Hugues Chevalier Paris.

Serving as both a continuation and a renewal, the new showroom Ardeco Gallery was inaugurated just across the road from the original gallery in 2014. It focuses on European Modern Art and Mid-century design and features the contemporary line of Georges Amatoury Studio. Comprising of tables, consoles, benches and accessories, the collection is imbued with more than a hint of mid-century spirit yet crafted using contemporary design techniques. The result is a range of timeless, harmonious compositions, each with its own distinct personality.

Recently Ardeco Gallery, welcomed Memphis Milano, a new cutting edge collection of eye-popping furniture and accessories made in Italy. Created on the initiative of the iconic architect Ettore Sottsass, this great cultural phenomenon of the early 80s has become an almost mythical symbol of "New Design."

For Design Days Dubai, the gallery will focus on its ethos of bridging modernity and old-world glamour, establishing and creating a dialogue between Mid-Century decorative art and contemporary, yet timeless, furniture.

Artys message is that although the 21st century Emirates may be high-tech and luxurious, many natural elements such as the seas, the sand and palm trees that were so integral to the daily lives of generations past remain unchanged. These elements are translated via a bespoke collection of art works that double function as furniture items, while connecting them with traditional symbols.

Following their professional training in woodcarving at Boulle School in Paris, Ingrid Michel and Frdric Pain established their Binme design studio in Burgundy and quickly solicited work on projects for the film and contemporary art industries.

The duo bring together a wealth of expertise to produce unique furnishings and bespoke pieces using unusual combinations of materials such as light and smooth resin together with solid and raw oak. The organic forms of their work evoke the mineral or vegetable world blended with more contemporary elements. Lines are pure, sensual, comforting. The chromatic palette is infinite; colour combinations can be daring and often minimalistic.

Binme is returning to Design Days Dubai with a new collection created especially for the event. These exceptional pieces represent Binomes signature identity within the design world.

    BROACHED COMMISSIONSmeLbOUrne / aUStraLia

Broached Commissions creates collections based on design history, specifically focusing on what happens to design when it migrates. Design movements, after all, are nothing more than a set of conventions based around technological knowledge and materiality. But what happens when these conventions migrate to new places? This is what preoccupies Broached - the story of globalisation as read through the perspective of design.

Broached Gallery operates out of Melbourne but also shows in a pop-up capacity in Sydney and Canberra. The space only exhibits work commissioned by Broached.

The gallerys exhibit for Design Days Dubai 2015 draws on pieces from Broached Colonial and Broached East. The two collections bring together designers from England, Japan, China and Australia to reflect upon colonisation in the first collection and the Australian gold rush in the second. The resulting ten objects convey the move from a Feudal globalising world to an industrial one.

Broached is a creative direction house, an on-going research project, a design studio and gallery in one. They create objects that relate deeply to the traditions of design and artisanship.

Broached Commissions has three founding permanent design members: Trent Jansen, Adam Goodrum and Charles Wilson. Broached Commissions was founded by creative director Lou Weis and Vincent Aiello.

Carpenters Workshop Gallery transcends classical borders in terms of art and design. Its proposal stands just at the intersection of these two universes: reaching precisely a symbiosis between art and design.

Carpenters Workshop Gallery produces and exhibits functional sculptures by international rising and already established artists and designers going outside their traditional territories of expression. The gallery is actively involved in the research and production of the limited edition works exhibited.

The choices are guided by the research of an emotional, artistic and historical relevance - a relevance that appears as evidence.

The gallery relies on the partnership of childhood friends, Julien Lombrail and Loic le Gaillard. They first opened a space in Londons Chelsea in 2006 in a former carpenters workshop, followed by a second space in Mayfair in 2008.

The opening of a 600 square metre space in Paris in 2011 at 54 rue de la Verrerie is an address steeped in history as it was previously occupied by the Galerie de France for several decades, and is viewed by the duo as a return to their roots. This Parisian transition confirms the commitment of the two founders of the gallery, as well as that of Aurelie Julien, their director, to the international promotion of their artists and designers.

Cities also works hand-in-hand with many upcoming artists from the Middle East and Gulf regions to highlight their contributions to the field of art and design.

The Cities collection at Design Days Dubai portrays the art of nature and the art of man, and how these two forces interact while using wood as a chief material for creation. With its versatility, beauty and natural texture, wood is art created by nature. Yet, placed in the hands of a designer, it can also become a tool of creation. Each piece portrays a different interpretation of the medium and highlights the high quality craftsmanship and innovation of the designers.

Fadi Sarieddine Design Studio is a multidisciplinary atelier that was officially founded in 2013 by Lebanese architect Fadi Sarieddine. Primarily focusing on furniture design, Sarieddine brings his rich architectural experience to his furniture by combining form and function, giving life to practical and charming objects. His experimental design approach challenges the fundamentals of traditional design; on one hand he examines the use of unconventional materials by taking them out of their natural setting and applying them as a new medium thus giving them a new identity. On the other, he cleverly adds functions and compartments to an otherwise basic object.

At Design Days Dubai 2015, Sarieddine will debut his plug-in series in a booth curated around the theme of contaminated spaces. This design approach celebrates the transportation of materials out of their comfort zone into an entirely new setting. The plug-in series revolves around the idea of customisation. Each plug-in takes a skeletal structure reminiscent of virtual wireframes to encapsulate various objects. Moving with the wave of the object, a table can be a bench, a planter or a decorative item The end result is a personal limited edition. Sarieddine creates a playful system, which allows furniture to catch up with the flexibility of modern day technology.

Gallery FUMI was established in Shoreditch, London in 2008. Directors Valerio Capo and Sam Pratt have built enduring creative relationships with clients, architects, interior designers and collectors. They run a growing programme of exhibitions in their galleries in London and Porto Cervo, Sardinia, alongside a regular presence at international design fairs.

The directors are unafraid of the unconventional, embracing change and the new, while promoting the value of craftsmanship. Objects are usually handmade by the designer in a small workshop context, or in small batch production by specialist craft practitioners. Many use traditional techniques: glassblowing; cabinetry; lacquering and meticulous hand assemblage but also disassembly, burning and digital technologies. There is an emphasis on the satisfyingly tactile as well as the purely visual, and significance placed on the emotional as well as the practical value of craft practice. Highlighting this vision of design, Gallery FUMI is delighted to participate for the first time at Design Days Dubai.

The gallery will present a selection of contemporary works including new pieces commissioned specifically for the fair. Designers and artists include Glithero, Rowan Mersh, Sam Orlando Miller, Studio Markunpoika, Study O Portable, Jeremy Wintrebert, Thomas Lemut, Alex Hull and Faye Toogood.

Gallery S. Bensimon was born out of the dedication to capture the beautiful and the rare. Situated in the heart of Paris, this light and calm space gives contemporary artists, craftspeople and designers total freedom to express themselves.

The result is a collection of beautiful furniture and objects produced in a sustainable way, with an emphasis on natural materials and sensitive expertise. Given this freedom, design creates a dialogue between tradition and innovation; the human hand tracing the lines of a contemporary poetry with technology and craftsmanship working together to generate mutual communication, restoring meaning and veracity to the object.

The limited editions pieces reflect many personalities, emotions and sensations. Elegant, simple yet bold, the gallerys collection come together in in an environment of harmonious tranquility.

In the heart of this small town, 100 metres from the Piazza del Duomo, where one can almost still hear the footsteps of the great Michelangelo Buonarroti, is Sabrina Landini Atelier & Gallery, where ancient materials such as bronze and marble take the form of the gallery's 'beaux objets'.

Designed, produced and assembled individually using the ancient techniques of Tuscan artisans, each of the design objects in this space is unique. Made with natural materials, these diverse works connect the past to the present, conveying a sense of substance, beauty and style.

    Shamsa [email protected]

Shamsa Alabbar is an experimental line based on Arabic typography creating an unusual type of beauty. Calligraphy - an integral part of the regions culture for thousands of years is reworked to create something unusual and simultaneously beautiful.

As a graphic designer Shamsa always had a huge interest in typography, especially with its many rules that must be respected. The designer strove to follow the basic guidelines whilst adding a new dimension. The whole idea behind the collection is to introduce letters as an art form.

This collection is based on Shamsas signature geometric alphabets, taking abstract shapes from the core collection to form a unique asymmetric form, balanced and complete in itself. She has also created a varied adaptation of typography based on vertical and horizontal lines that create a simplified version of the traditional letters, as well as an additional adaptation of typography formed by cropping the letters using a triangular shape, thereby creating a modern form that resembles a hint of the Arabic letter. The contemporary Arab woman inspires this collection; she is modern, and minimal but still embraces her roots and traditions.

Shamsa Alabbar is Arabic, edgy, modern, geometric, and unusual. This experimental line has been designed for art and design lovers; those who are not afraid of change and being different.

Southern Guild was established in 2008 to provide a platform for collectable, limited-edition South African design, showcasing work by the most recognised names in the country and cultivating the careers of emerging contemporary designers. In February 2014, Southern Guild also successfully organised the inaugural GUILD, Africas First International Design Fair during World Design Capital Cape Town.

South African design is artisanal, handmade and cerebral and our designers work in a very personal, exploratory way with deep cultural relevance and little interest in passing trends. Southern Guild encourages collaboration and discourse, which aims to stimulate and provoke the local design industry and has become a benchmark for quality and originality. The gallery cohesively and comprehensively showcases the most important contemporary design from South Africa, at the best fairs around the world.

For Design Days Dubai, Southern Guild aims to convey the multi faceted nature of South African Design, which is layered with story telling, political allusion, historical and cultural references and a drawing down into primal and earth-bound essence. These impulses are expressed through sculptural and graphic form that seems somehow familiar and yet strange.
