Dear Sir or Madam:

A few years ago, I purchased a Gary LaFontaine fi ve-weight Stealth Rod with two tips. At the time of purchase, I thought, Stealth Rod with two tips. At the time of purchase, I thought, Stealth Rod"Well, it's nice to have two tips but I probably won't need the second one." Fast forward to a few weeks ago when I came off of the San Juan River with a big grin on my face for actually catching a couple of nice fi sh on this very challenging river with my Gary LaFontaine fi ve weight Stealth Rod. This rod works really well whether I am fi shing dry fl ies or soaking nymphs for sulking trout. When I got to my truck, I placed the rod on top of the canopy to keep it out of harms ways as there was a lot of traffi c in the parking lot. I carefully packed all of my gear in the back of the truck and closed it up. After I returned to my motel room, I unpacked the truck and took everything inside. When I looked for my fl y rod, I realized that I had left in on top of the truck. My heart jumped into my throat as I raced back outside and started the truck up praying that my rod and reel would be back in the parking lot. After I reached the parking lot and looking it over very carefully, I realized that my rod and real may be gone forever. Feeling very sad, I headed back to the motel. On a whim, I stopped by Abe's Fly Shop and asked if any-one had turned in a fl y rod. The courteous gentlemen behind the counter stopped and looked at some notes he had posted behind the counter. He asked me to describe the rod and I told him it was a Gary LaFontaine 5 wt. Stealth Rod with a Ross reel attached to it. He then led me to the back of the shop and pulled out my fl y rod and reel. He mentioned that it had been run over so I probably could not fi sh with it anymore. I thanked him profusely and asked for the name of the indi-vidual that found the rod and reel and turned it in. He gave me the name and room number. I quickly wrote a thank you note to this gentlemen and left it at his room door. Also, I made a visit to the offi ce and asked if I could leave a reward for the gentlemen that found my fl y rod and reel as a small gesture of my appreciation for turning in one of my favorite rods and reel combinations. He agreed that it would be a good idea. My prayers were answered for both the return of the rod and reel as well as the condition of the fl y rod. Yes, it had been run over and the tip was ruined. However, I reached into the burgundy col-ored rod tube that contained the spare tip for my Gary LaFontaine 5 wt. Stealth Rod. I was in business again! Thank goodness for the spare tip! This incident has rekindled my belief that there are some really fi ne and decent people fi shing the same streams, rivers and lakes that I do.

Thank you, Patrick Welch (NM)------------------------------------------------------------------------

by Jim Schollmeyer & Tracy Peterson This book contains 28 fl y patterns that can be used to match most fi shing situations. Each pattern includes information on what the fl y imitates, and when, where and how to fi sh it. These patterns were chosen not only for their ability to catch trout, but to show the different types and styles of commonly used fl ies. To reduce the number of patterns needed, natural insects with similar body shapes or states of development are grouped together, and one or two basic patterns that imitate the insects in each group are presented. Then by changing the size and/or body color of the basic pattern, you can match all of the naturals in its group. With each basic pattern there is a photo showing useful variations of the fl y or a similar pattern. An interesting concept not seen before in a tying book and nobody does it better than Jim Schollmeyer.

Many of us just use the rotation to see the bottom of our fl y, but the rotary vise advantages go far beyond this. Rotary Fly-Tying's main objectives are to explore a sampling of true rotary vises currently available on the market, guide tiers through the sometimes frustrating adjustments needed to use their rotary vise to the fullest and share tying tips and tricks for quickly tying effec-tive fl ies. There are also 36 fl ies for fresh and saltwater species. Al and Gretchen have years of experience at the vise both as tyers and teachers. by Lou Ureneck Not all father and son trips turn out to be the stuff of American legend, but sometimes the ending is worth the fi ght. Told against the backdrop of the Alaskan wilds, Backcast is the remembrance of a fi shing trip that carried a father and son from the mountains of Alaska to the Bering Sea. Along the way, nature transforms from friend into foe, and their struggles are played out against the poignant emotional battle raging between the two as they descend the river headed toward confrontation. Double Haulwith Rhea Topping

Okay, I always like clear, concise subject matter. It helps me identify what a particular item can do for you. So here is what I can tell you about this DVD— Great topic to tackle. The day I reviewed this I also reviewed Fly Casting —for better fl y fi shing (p.5). I had a great day. The skills Rhea teaches on this DVD are used over and over again in every type of cast, but if you can't "haul" correctly to begin with–you're lost. This DVD alone is worth watching, but together with an instructional DVD teaching other casting methods, makes a dyn-o-mite lesson. Rhea's methods are basic, consistent and make the Double Haul sensible and better yet, do-able. Mel Krieger, Joan Wulff and Brian O'Keefe add tidbits of their own.(#B3778) DVD; 60 min. Under sub-optimal conditions of the early season, low water, few fi sh and very clear rivers, the benefi ts of the Scandina-vian Spey Cast become apparent. (#D3779) DVD: 74 min. Price -- $39.95

Blue Man in a Red StateMontana's Governor Brian Schweitzer

and the New Western Populismby Greg Lemon

We like to toss in something unusual every once in awhile and this was irresistible. A gun-toting, horseback-riding liberal Democrat, Brian Schweitzer won the governorship in Montana through a com-bination of shrewd political maneuvering and old-fashioned grass-roots populism. In a state that elected and re-elected a Republican President, Schweitzer continues to enjoy high ap-proval ratings. How he's managed to appeal to his conservative electorate even while pursuing a populist agenda has intrigued journalists and political strategists across the country. Floating on a rising tide of western populism, this grandson of Montana home-steaders holds a graduate degree in soil science, speaks Arabic, and could not be more passionate about his program to convert Montana's massive coal resources to gasoline. In a national election year, this fi rst look at the governor and his agenda is an absolute much-read. (Well, I think so anyway, but I live here.)

Fly Casting– for better fl y fi shingswith Kjell Ove Grimsmo

This DVD was brought to our attention by it's "star" Kjell Ove Grimsmo. We are currently working on getting inventory to the warehouse— hopefully we can help set up the import for this DVD. This is an instructional DVD on fl y casting produced in Nor-way. It's tone is encouraging and easily suggestive. Past sales in the Book Mailer dictate a high interest in this type of DVD. I thoroughly enjoyed this production. It covers many areas of casting in simple, direct, nicely-fi lmed chapters with emphasis on lengthening each type of cast. A couple of lesser known casting techniques—the Snake Roll Cast and the Air Snake Cast round out a complete venue on casts for almost all situations. There are bonus sections devoted to just fi shing—Atlantic Salmon and Grayling Fishing in Norway, some saltwater fun, and Sea Trout in Argentina. An all around great production done by a really knowledgeable guy. Kjell will participate in this year's Spey-O-Rama at the Golden Gate Casting Club. I suspect he will do very well in this year's competition. He says the purpose of the DVD is to instruct with less speaking. I got lots of education via verbal or visual, it all worked for me.

New~ Hemingway on Fishingby Ernest Hemingway, afterword by Jack Hemingway

All Hemingway, all fi shing. From childhood on, Ernest Hemingway was a passionate fi sherman. .Here collected for the fi rst time in one volume, are all of his great writings about the many kinds of fi shing he did. From the early Nick Adams stories and the memorable chapters on fi shing the Irati River in the Sun Also Rises to such late novels as Islands in the Stream, this collection traces the evolution of a great writer's passion: the range of his interests; and the sure uses he made of fi shing, transforming it into the stuff of great literature.

How to Fish by Chris Yates

Chris Yates is a photographer, author, founder of Waterlogmagazine, but fi rst and foremost a fi sherman. For years he was the angling correspondent for the Financial Times. He was fi rst inspired by the discovery of a monster carp in his village pond when he was fi ve. Thirty years later, he caught what was then the biggest carp—and the biggest fi sh—in England. There's no better guide for the uninitiated —and no better companion for those already familiar with the satisfactions of fi shing than Chris Yates. Having had some history with some types of wood-work-ing, I fi nd I am naturally drawn to the process of crafting

a bamboo rod. I don't have any knowledge, tools, means or any-thing else that could carry me down this path, but if I decided to take that direction—a good place to start would be Golden Witch Technologies. Many of our bamboo guys are already fa-miliar with them to be sure. You can print out their catalog from your computer. Check out the section on classes. They aren't cheap, but I bet if this is what you want to do, they are one of the fi nest places to do it. Visit goldenwitch.com. Here’s two of their new DVDs just out~ see p.21 for another on graphite...

Making Bamboo Rod Blanks Using the methods originally taught by Daryll Whitehead, then refi ned through years of custom and light production rod-making in the Golden Witch rod shop, Russ Gooding and his team will guide you from selecting the raw culm to the fi nished blank. Broken into discrete steps, making bamboo blanks is a surprisingly straightforward process. It focuses on blank making, not as a mechanical engineering exercise replete with arcane formulae, but as an accessible craft to which all anglers can aspire. Bamboo is potent, yet sublime. Finishing Bamboo Rods Aesthetic decisions, fi t, and fi nish defi ne the quality of a split bamboo rod long before an angler tests its action over ris-ing fi sh. An elegant rod is a harmonious composition, melding classic styling with components that hark back to the era of our forefathers: agate stripping guides, fi ne silk threads, cork, native wood, nickel silver, and natural oil and resin varnishes. Well fi nished, a bamboo rod looks good, feels good, and even smells good. Although each rodmaker will choose a different aesthetic, all rodmakers must master the details of fi t and fi nish. Making Strip-Built Fly Rodsby John Betts

A documentation of a subject that is revered with an intense labor of love. Originally self-published as an elegant hand-drawn and hand-written journal, Amato has re-released this in full color while still retaining its unique style–a journal written in calligraphy with exquisite drawings. Betts shows how to build durable strip-built fl y rods on a lathe with ordinary wood-working tools and skills. We highly recommend this ap-pealing book for our bamboo boys, rod makers, history buffs, and wood-working anglers.

“a journal of combining ordinary skills and available standard wood working tools in new ways to turn smooth, lively, durable strip-built rods from native and exotic hard and soft woods on a lathe.”

Stealth Rods have a perfect taper made out of the fi nest graphite scrim. It has a sweet action -- a softer tip allows for close, accurate and delicate presentation while the casting power in the

butt lays out 100 feet of line in the fl ick of an eye. Matte black fi nish, black Fuji double-foot guides, and an anodized reel seat (ebony insert). They fl ex beautifully all the way down into

the butt. Grip is a Full-Wells (except h-taper which is a double-well) with a front taper—handle has an uplocking reel seat.

Every rod comes with a spare tip -- and we will replace any broken tips or other pieces at our cost plus shipping.

Price includes the Stealth Rod with extra tip, cloth rod bag, and cordura rod case.

------------------------------------------------------------------------d-taper~ This marvelous STEALTH Rod is our standard d-taper modu-lus design. It fl exes beautifully all the way down into the butt and also has amazing casting power. The "d" stands for "delicate".p-taper~ The p-taper 6-weight is as revolutionary in its way as our 4- and 5-weight d-taper series. The "p" stands for "power". This graphite scrim is a technological advance — it makes a rod fl ex and store more energy in the casting stroke than any other rod. The way it bends, deep into the mid-section, makes it perfect not only for throwing a long line, but for casting weighted nymphs and streamers.h-taper~ The h-taper 3-piece rods cast just as beautifully and maybe even a little farther than the original p-taper. The main difference from the p-taper is in the butt. The h-taper has a powerful fi ghting butt on a thinner blank. The grip is a double well with an anodized aluminum reel seat. These modifi cations make a excellent light saltwater rod as well a freshwater rod.

Judy reveals their secrets for anticipating the drift, casting to create slack and controlling tension to present a natural appearing fl y. This book is in and out of the Book Mailer as it goes in and out of print—but Slack Line Strate-gies is a unique topic done very well, it is will always have space here, as long as it is in print.

Gotta love your Dad–

I took my dad to the mall the other day. We decided to grab a bite at the food court. I noticed he was watching a teenager sitting next to him. The teenager had spiked hair in all different colors: green, red, orange, and blue. My dad just kept staring at him. The teenager would look and fi nd him staring every time. When the teenager fi nally had enough, he sarcastically asked, "What's the matter old man, never done anything wild in your life?" Knowing my Dad, I quickly swallowed my food so that I would not choke on his response; I knew he’d have a good one. And in classic style he did not bat an eye in his response. "Got drunk once and had sex with a peacock. I was just wondering if you were my son."

Private Label FliesFLIES ~~ FLIES ~~ FLIES

Here ~~ and only here! The biggest selection of LaFontaine Private Label Flies sold anywhere!Plus — some new to some but an old favorite to others...

Over the years we have brought in new LaFontaine Patterns and taken some patterns out. A few patterns remain poised on the line: we really don't sell enough of these patterns to merit keeping them in production, but they are so deadly for certain fi shing situations, we can't bear to let them go. So it is with the Black June, a pattern absent from Book Mailer pages for the past couple of years. But while you haven't seen it here – by special request, we have continued to have this pattern tied privately for several devoted fans. For this reason I have been prompted to keep some of these in my fl y box this past season. And you know what, those Black Junes came out of my box every time I fi shed. At sometime during the day on each river I found myself tying on that fl y. Be it because there was no clear winner in a hatch situation or because other patterns lost their effectiveness at some point during the day, out came the Black June and to work it went. It almost alwaysalways pulled in at least one or two more fi sh for the day. I can't tell you if it was the actual "small beetle" or terrestrial imitation of intent or that it's small and black with a silver fl ash that attracts the fi sh. I just know it works and I recommend you give it a try. It is small and simple to tie, but its effectiveness is mighty. It can be fi shed just under the surface or a little lead wire wrapped about 18 inches above the fl y gets it down into the weed beds later on in the season. You can watch Al Beatty tie this fl y on the LaFontaine Originals Vol. 3 DVD (p.28).

Air Head 6-pack $12 3-pack $6 Brown -- size 10 (#S1002) (#T1002) 12 (#S1003) (#T1003) 14 (#S1506) (#T1506) 16 (#S1550) (#T1550) Olive -- size 10 (#S1005) (#T1005) 12 (#S1006) (#T1006) 14 (#S1519) (#T1519) 16 (#S1518) (#T1518) Yellow -- size 10 (#S1008) (#T1008) 12 (#S1009) (#T1009) 14 (#S1488) (#T1488) 16 (#S1520) (#T1520)~ a "pulling" fl y with spikes and a head of closed-cell foam that diffuses light. Sizes 14 and 16 in Olive and Yellow match the Little Yellow Stone and Little Olive Stone of western rivers during mid- and late-summer months. Size 16 Browm is a great imitation for the March Red in early spring on New England streams (p. 139 of Trout Flies)

----------Beadhead Marabou Worm 6-pack $12 3-pack $6 Natural Gray -- size 14 (#S1617) (#T1617) Olive -- 14 (#S1618) (#T1618) Red -- 14 (#S1619) (#T1619)~ cast upstream and fi sh dead drift in the current. That "somersault" motion is a triggering action, a movement that makes a trout refl ex-ively pounce on the fl y. The Beadhead Marabou Worm works during the warmer months, when fi sh metabolism is in high gear. It is also a great streamer pattern for early spring. Try as the bottom fl y in a two-nymph rig. (a variation of the standard Marabou Worm on p. 85 of Trout Flies)

----------Blackfl y Larva 6-pack $12 3-pack $6 Olive/Black -- size 18 (#S1014) (#T1014) ~ trout in the Northeastern rivers gorge on the aquatic larvae of these biting fl ies. This was Gary's #1 nymph for Maine, upstate New York, and Canada during May and June. Use the White Marker (p.17) with this fl y. (p. 42 of Trout Flies)

----------Cased Caddis Larva 6-pack $12 3-pack $6 Dark -- size 12 (#S1022) (#T1022) 14 (#S1556) (#T1556)~ case-making caddisfl ies drift free in the current during the day, not during the night like other larval and nymphal forms. We see lots of these in the rivers here in Montana. This fl y imitates a very impor-tant food item. (p. 45 of Trout Flies)

----------Clear Wing Spinner 6-pack $12 3-pack $6 Black -- size 18 (#S1026) (#T1026) 20 (#S1025) (#T1025) 22 (#S1027) (#T1027) Olive -- size 14 (#S1036) (#T1036) 16 (#S1037) (#T1037) 18 (#S1038) (#T1038) 20 (#S1039) (#T1039) Rusty -- size 12 (#S1040) (#T1040) (red/brown) 14 (#S1041) (#T1041) 16 (#S1042) (#T1042) 18 (#S1043) (#T1043)

<< Clear Wing Spinner continued >>Clear Wing Spinner continued >>Clear Wing Spinner~ the Clear Wing Spinner, with wings of clear Antron, matches the wings of a spent mayfl y spinner. The wings of the natural aren't only clear -- they are pleated and when they're fl at on the water they gather air bubbles underneath. So does the Antron. Great pattern for early mornings. Added bonus: you can see this fl y from 30 feet away because of the brightness of the wings (making it invaluable for the small imita-tions of the Trico, for example). (p. 147 of Trout Flies)

----------Cricket 6-pack $12 3-pack $6 Black -- size 10 (#S1558) (#T1558) 12 (#S1057) (#T1057) 14 (#S1058) (#T1058)~ from late dusk on into dark this is a killing fl y; and not surprisingly it is also really effective at dawn. Do fi sh eat that many crickets? Or do they just like black? The pattern works. Fish this tandem with a bright fl y as an indicator. (p. 151 of Trout Flies)

--------------------

Dancing Caddis 6-pack $12 3-pack $6 Bright Green -- size 12 (#S1060) (#T1060) 14 (#S1521) (#T1521) Brown/Yellow -- size 12 (#S1722) (#T1722) 14 (#S1723) (#T1723) Ginger -- size 12 (#S1062) (#T1062) 14 (#S1522) (#T1522) Gray -- size 12 (#S1064) (#T1064) 14 (#S1523) (#T1523) Russet -- size 12 (#S1066) (#T1066) 14 (#S1524) (#T1524)~ tied so that the hook point rides up. This means the fl y looks "right" when fi shed dead drift or with a twitch. On tough, fl at water streams this is my caddis dry fl y imitation. The Dancing Caddis is earning a splendid reputation on lakes, too. Ever notice how stillwater caddisfl ies "run" across the surface after emerging. This fl y skates beautifully, leaving the same "V" wake on the water. Tip: grease the whole leader. We also have the original Swedish Dry Fly Hook for this pattern (p.16). (p. 154 of Trout Flies)

----------Deep Sparkle Pupa 6-pack $12 3-pack $6 Brown/ size 12 (#S1068) (#T1068) Bright Green -- 14 (#S1069) (#T1069) 16 (#S1070) (#T1070) 18 (#S1071) (#T1071) Brown/Yellow -- size 12 (#S1073) (#T1073) 14 (#S1074) (#T1074) 16 (#S1075) (#T1075) 18 (#S1076) (#T1076) Dark Gray -- size 12 (#S1078) (#T1078) 14 (#S1079) (#T1079) 16 (#S1080) (#T1080) 18 (#S1081) (#T1081)

Deep Sparkle Pupa 6-pack $12 3-pack $6 Ginger -- size 12 (#S1083) (#T1083) 14 (#S1084) (#T1084) 16 (#S1085) (#T1085) 18 (#S1086) (#T1086)~ this is the fl y (along with the Emergent Sparkle Pupa) that started the Antron revolution -- and it's still the best caddis pupa imitation. Fish it dead drift (weight on the leader) two or three hours before the start of the actual emergence. Or, when trout start slashing the surface sporadically, swing it across a fl at. (p. 112 of Trout Flies)

----------Deer Hair Wooly 6-pack $12 3-pack $6 Natural Gray -- size 10 (#S1089) (#T1089) 12 (#S1090) (#T1090) 14 (#S1091) (#T1091) 16 (#S1092) (#T1092)~ an all-around terrestrial searching dry fl y. Try it as a catapiller imitation in deep, slow runs during the heat of the day. (p. 161 of Trout Flies)

----------Diving Blue-Winged Olive Egg-Layer 6-pack $12 3-pack $6 Olive -- size 16 (#S1093) (#T1093) 18 (#S1094) (#T1094)~ the Blue-Winged Olive (Baetis sp.) mayfl y lays its eggs under-water. This pattern was devised and tested to mimic that behavior -- this is a sinking fl y with a post of clear Antron and an olive body that matches the underwater female perfectly. The amazing thing about this activity is that not only the females but also the males go underwater during the egg-laying. Imagine that -- this is like a double spinner fall. With any other mayfl y only the females land on the surface, but here both females and males are available to the trout. What a bonanza! (see it tied in LaFontaine Originals, Vol. l, p.28)

----------Diving Caddis 6-pack $12 3-pack $6 Brown/ size 12 (#S1096) (#T1096) Bright Green -- 14 (#S1097) (#T1097) 16 (#S1098) (#T1098) 18 (#S1099) (#T1099) Brown/Yellow -- size 12 (#S1102) (#T1102) 14 (#S1103) (#T1103) 16 (#S1104) (#T1104) 18 (#S1105) (#T1105) Dark Gray -- size 12 (#S1107) (#T1107) 14 (#S1108) (#T1108) 16 (#S1109) (#T1109) 18 (#S1110) (#T1110) Light Ginger -- size 12 (#S1112) (#T1112) 14 (#S1113) (#T1113) 16 (#S1114) (#T1114) 18 (#S1115) (#T1115)~ in a recent survey of commercial fl y sales only one winged wet fl y pattern (the forgotten fl y style) ranked in the top 20 -- it was this wonderful, imitative pattern. Gary considered this an indispensable pattern in his fl y box. Caddis can be the phantom insect anglers can't see but must trust in by the way the trout are feeding. Extra protec-tion for always having the right stage. (p. 32 of Trout Flies)

Double Wing 6-pack $12 3-pack $6 Gray -- size 12 (#S1131) (#T1131) 14 (#S1132) (#T1132) 16 (#S1133) (#T1133) Lime -- size 12 (#S1137) (#T1137) 14 (#S1138) (#T1138) 16 (#S1139) (#T1139) Orange -- size 12 (#S1143) (#T1143) 14 (#S1144) (#T1144) 16 (#S1145) (#T1145) Pink Lady -- size 12 (#S1149) (#T1149) 14 (#S1150) (#T1150) 16 (#S1151) (#T1151) Royal -- size 12 (#S1155) (#T1155) 14 (#S1156) (#T1156) 16 (#S1157) (#T1157) Yellow -- size 12 (#S1167) (#T1167) 14 (#S1168) (#T1168) 16 (#S1169) (#T1169)~ the Theory of Attraction is one of the center points of The Dry Fly -- New Angles. Choose this pattern for the color of the light- There are six important color variations: Gray = overcast days; Lime = afternoon; Orange = dusk; Pink Lady = early morning; Royal = brightest sun with glare on water; Yellow = midday. (p. 168 of Trout Flies)

The Drowned Trico, developed by Justin Baker, imitates all of those spinners that get sucked underwater. You'll catch fi sh after fi sh on this pattern. Just fi sh it dead drift through areas where trout are working the surface. (see it tied in LaFontaine Originals, Vol. lll, p.28)

----------Duck Butt Dun 6-pack $12 3-pack $6 Slate/Olive -- size 16 (#S1216) (#T1216) (BWO) 18 (#S1217) (#T1217) Pale Gray/Yellowish-Olive (PMD) --

The Pale Gray/Yellowish Olive is for the western Pale Morning Dun; the Slate/Olive is for the Blue-Winged Olive (which hatches in trout streams across the country). (p. 173 of Trout Flies)

He demonstrates how to tie it on Volume II of the LaFontaine Originalsseries. He shows how the Double Magic technique adds an aura of orange Antron around the peacock body -- and makes the classic original into a new super nymph. We felt as if the most effective dry fl y was always going to be one that you could see. The top wing is yellow and it stands up slightly to present a visible silhouette. And by the way, this is a great fi sh catcher. If you tie your own, vary the wing color to fi nd out what works the best for your area. (see it tied in LaFontaine Originals, Vol. l, p.28)

----------Floating Damsel Nymph 6-pack $12 3-pack $6 Olive -- size 10 (#S1259) (#T1259)~ every tug of the lines results in a snaky up-and-down swimming motion. An excellent way to lake fi sh using a fast sinking line and very short leader. Also great in slow water on big rivers in the weedy shallows. (p. 66 of Trout Flies)

----------Foam Ant 6-pack $12 3-pack $6 Black -- size 16 (#S1274) (#T1274) 18 (#S1275) (#T1275) Red -- size 18 (#S1280) (#T1280) 20 (#S1554) (#T1554)~ this was Gary's favorite imitation for high-mountain lakes. The translucent foam lets light radiate around the body segments, perfectly matching the natural insect. A great pattern for fl at water in streams, also. Eric Peper turned us on to this -- the #20 Red Foam Ant is a killer on the San Juan in NM. (p. 197 of Trout Flies)

----------Foam Beetle 6-pack $12 3-pack $6 Green -- size 14 (#S1281) (#T1281) 16 (#S1282) (#T1282) Black-- size 14 (#S1824) (#T1824) 16 (#S1825) (#T1825)~ this is mainly a lake pattern (where it seems to work spectacularly). Especially on high-mountain lakes terrestrials make up 70% or more of the summer diet of trout and the fi sh are always hunting for beetles. Foam is green or black on the bottom -- white on top for high visibil-ity. (p. 200 of Trout Flies)

----------Free-Living Caddis Larva 6-pack $12 3-pack $6 Bright Green -- size 14 (#S1285) (#T1285) 16 (#S1286) (#T1286) Olive Brown -- size 14 (#S1289) (#T1289) 16 (#S1290) (#T1290)~ imitates all of the caddisfl y larvae that don't build cases prior to pupation. These larvae include the free-ranging hunters (Green Sedge - use Bright Green) and the super abundant net-makers (Spotted Sedge - use Olive Brown). Gary used this pattern with the White Marker (p.17) trick all the time -- as a searching combination this is a good one.(p. 71 of Trout Flies)

Improved Buzz Ball 6-pack $12 3-pack $6 Orange/Grizzly -- size 14 (#S1570) (#T1570)~ one fall day on a mountain lake Gary watched trout continually bust clumped balls of mating midges, all the time ignoring single insects on the water. The Improved Buzz Ball brought those cutthroat charg-ing from many yards away. (p. 144 of Trout Flies -- this Improved Version has a "half wing" of clear Antron for better visibility)

Veteran Missouri River guide, Trapper Badovinac (Fly Fishing Mon-tana Solitude and Fly Fishing Montana's Missouri River), loves this fl y.

---------Lady Heather 6-pack $12 3-pack $6 Gray/Cream -- size 14 (#S1334) (#T1334) 16 (#S1335) (#T1335)~ a Trude-type dry fl y great for overcast days. This pattern was tested and developed by on-stream days of fl ogging. Gary spent so many days in the rain that he ended up with a nearly terminal case of mildew. Effective fl y and the one that drove Gary to scuba diving. (p. 216 of Trout Flies)

----------Missouri River Sow Bug 6-pack $12 3-pack $6 Gray -- size 14 (#S1623) (#T1623) 16 (#S1624) (#T1624)~ the totally unique imitation of one of the most important crusta-ceans in spring creeks and tailwaters. This fl y, developed by one of Gary's team, Tony Perpignano, is dubbed with gray muskrat, and weighted carefully along one side of the hook shank so that it wobbles as it drifts in the current. So tantalizing! (see it tied in LaFontaine Originals, Vol. lV, p.28)

----------Mohawk 6-pack $12 3-pack $6 Gray -- size 14 (#S1366) (#T1366) 16 (#S1367) (#T1367) Green -- size 14 (#S1370) (#T1370) 16 (#S1371) (#T1371) Orange -- size 14 (#S1374) (#T1374) 16 (#S1375) (#T1375)~ colored deer hair covers the rear 2/3rds of the hook shank; the front 1/3rd is always white. It's that white section that makes this pattern such a visible fl y. The Mohawk often outperforms the trailing nymph or emerger. (p. 225 of Trout Flies)

---------Natural Drift Stonefl y Nymph 6-pack $12 3-pack $6 Black -- size 6 (#S1380) (#T1380) 8 (#S1381) (#T1381) 10 (#S1377) (#T1377) Golden -- size 6 (#S1388) (#T1388) 8 (#S1389) (#T1389) 10 (#S1386) (#T1386)~ still the fi nest stonefl y nymph there is for matching the emerging insects crawling into the shallows. Fish it right next to the banks. The buoyancy of the deer hair thorax and the lead-weighted abdo-men keep this fl y drifting in a vertical position. (p. 91 of Trout Flies)-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gold Bead Deep Sparkle Pupa 6-pack $12 3-pack $6 Brown/ size 12 (#S1189) (#T1189) Bright Green -- 14 (#S1190) (#T1190) 16 (#S1191) (#T1191) Brown/Yellow -- size 12 (#S1194) (#T1194) 14 (#S1195) (#T1195) 16 (#S1196) (#T1196) Dark Gray -- size 12 (#S1198) (#T1198) 14 (#S1199) (#T1199) 16 (#S1200) (#T1200) Ginger -- size 12 (#S1202) (#T1202) 14 (#S1203) (#T1203) 16 (#S1204) (#T1204)~ the weight of the bead adds another dimension to this fl y. The bead sinks the fl y, of course, but it also gives it a "jigging" motion as it bounces along the bottom. Carry both variations, regular and bead head, in your box for versatility in presentation. (see it tied in LaFontaine Originals, Vol. Vl, p.28)

----------Gray Coughlin 6-pack $12 3-pack $6 Gray -- size 12 (#S1297) (#T1297) 14 (#S1298) (#T1298) 16 (#S1299) (#T1299)~ it's afternoon and the light is starting to get soft. This is the time to start drifting a Gray Coughlin on the riffl es and runs. A fi ne, consis-tent searching dry fl y so drab it's hard to say what it imitates. Use it like an Adams. The quill fi bers separate after a few casts. That's okay. (p. 211 of Trout Flies)

------------Halo Mayfl y Emerger 6-pack $12 3-pack $6 Brown -- size 14 (#S1305) (#T1305) 16 (#S1306) (#T1306) 18 (#S1307) (#T1307) Cream -- size 14 (#S1309) (#T1309) 16 (#S1310) (#T1310) 18 (#S1311) (#T1311) Olive -- size 14 (#S1313) (#T1313) 16 (#S1314) (#T1314) 18 (#S1315) (#T1315)~ this is a revolutionary pattern, a mayfl y emerger that recognizes the "halo" that forms over the thorax as the back of the hatching nymph splits and fl ares out. Trout key on this bright aura. The best way to fi sh the Halo Mayfl y Emerger is to double rig under a Mohawk as a an indicator pattern. (p. 122 of Trout Flies)

------------Halo Midge Emerger 6-pack $12 3-pack $6 Black -- size 16 (#S1316) (#T1316) 18 (#S1317) (#T1317) 20 (#S1318) (#T1318) Olive -- size 18 (#S1541) (#T1541) 20 (#S1542) (#T1542) Red -- size 18 (#S1539) (#T1539) 20 (#S1540) (#T1540)~ this is an indispensable imitation for lakes, tailwaters, spring creeks, and for winter fi shing on rivers. With the back humped up against the surface and the body hanging down, this unique shape is irresistible to trout. See the Halo Mayfl y Emerger for Mohawk fi sh-ing tip. (p. 128 of Trout Flies)

Apparently, the off-centered weighting on this fl y makes it dance tantalizingly on the dead drift in moving water. A hot pattern for the Big Horn (pink), Green River (olive), and White River (orange). And a #12 Olive racked up an incredible day on the Box Canyon on the Henry's Fork. (p. 94 of Trout Flies)

---------Shroud 6-pack $12 3-pack $6 Gray & Red -- size 12 (#S1413) (#T1413) 14 (#S1414) (#T1414) 16 (#S1534) (#T1534)~ think "dry fl y Woolly Worm." This is the pattern that proved how incredible marabou is as a tailing material for a dry fl y (no, the marabou doesn't sink it). The red marabou tail slithers with every twitch. It's guaranteed to be the most effective fl y available when Callibaetis mayfl ies are on the water.(p. 231 of Trout Flies)Sparkling Hare's Ear 6-pack $12 3-pack $6 Natural Hare's Ear -- size 12 (#S1636) (#T1636) 14 (#S1620) (#T1620) 16 (#S1622) (#T1622)~ the question is simple -- if you mix Antron with any dubbing, do you make a better fl y? The Sparkling Hare's Ear has a body of 50% Antron and 50% hare's ear. In our underwater testing this pattern pulls trout farther than the standard Hare's Ear pattern. Unlike the unnatural brightness of metallic tinsel, the natural brightness of Antron never seems to frighten or repel fi sh. There is magic in this material -- and the Sparkling Hare's Ear is a magical fl y.(p. 51 of Trout Flies)

----------Spruce Moth 6-pack $12 3-pack $6 Cream -- size 12 (#S1422) (#T1422)~ the Spruce Moth, always abundant around pine-forested trout streams, is a strange terrestrial. It lands on the water, but once its wings get wet it can't fl y away. Trout gorge on them. Indispensable on the Gallatin River and Rock Creek in MT. (p. 240 of Trout Flies)

Antron fi bers around the body mimics the translucency and brightness of the edges of a mayfl y nymph. Black and brown are moving water colors and the olive imitates the damsel fl y nymph for stillwaters.

Variegated Midge Larva 6-pack $12 3-pack $6 Olive/Red/Clear size 18 (#S1569) (#T1569) Antron 20 (#S1566) (#T1566) 22 (#S1595) (#T1595) 24 (#S1598) (#T1598)~ our Book Mailer customers are the fi nest fl y fi shermen in the world. The Variegated Midge Larva is a great stillwater fl y, especially a high mountain lake fl y, but readers started using it on tailwaters and spring creeks with tremendous results, out-fi shing all other midge larvae imitations. It's the fl ash of the clear Antron -- pure magic! Hot fl y on the Green, UT. (p. 133 of Fly Fishingthe Mountain Lakes)

It has a hare's ear body, a mixed brown/grizzly hackle, and white calf tail wings. It was cre-ated specifi cally to match the western Brown Drake (none of the other Wulff patterns do), but it proved to be such a good, all-around fl y on the Big Hole and other rivers that it became very popular for everyday drift boat fi shing. ~ FANCIFUL FLIES ~ These are the more complicated, larger patterns. We put four fl ies in a package instead of 1/2 dozen. The price is still $12.00 per pack-age (and the price is a bargain for such fancy fl ies).

White size 4 (#F1833) 6 (#F1834) 8 (#F1835)

Black size 4 (#F1836) 6 (#F1837) 8 (#F1838)

~ this streamer pattern is designed to be fi shed using a strip-strip-pause pattern. During the pause phase, it will turn over on its side (looking dis-combobulated, or "drunk"). Great for tailwater fi shing!

– • – • – • – the amazing Flex Patterns 4-pack $12 Flex-Hopper -- size 10 (#F1256) ~ a match for big insects when trout are on the hunt. The "fl ex" imitates the insect in a manner unlike any other hopper patterns. Trout look over imitations and refuse every one except a Flex pat-tern. Why? They are waiting for a sign of life, a bending of the body. If you are tying this pattern, be creative, vary heads until you fi nd a perfect combination for your home water. Here's the fl y that makes trout eat it out of pure curiosity - it triggers an instinctive "grab it" refl ex. The Tear Drop is the fi rst subsurface fl y to effectively use the appeal of phosphorescence. (p. 98 of Trout Flies)HINT: When I tie these Tear Drop Nymphs, I dab a little dubbing on the "tear drop" part of the hook after I apply the Aqua Head Flex Cement. It just gives me a little bit denser body and helps hold my fi gure 8 pattern.

Klod Hopper 4-pack $12size 8 (#F1810)

10 (#F1811) 12 (#F1812)~ the "Superfl y" of 2003. This pattern, developed by Paul Stimpson, uses tan and dark-brown coloring and large, red and black striped legs to imitate a mature grasshopper. He designed it with a smaller body hackle and rubber "X" legs so it would fl oat "in" the surface fi lm and ride just like a natural to fool those "intelligent" fi sh. I have seen this hopper pattern work time and time again when nothing seems to be pulling the trout in. I also learned how to tie it. I think I'll continue to pilfer the supply closet, so to speak.

*LaFontaine Private Label Fly Box* It pained us when we were forced to discontinue our Bristle-Tac Fly Box. Bristle-Tac is a product made by 3M who is also the parent company of Scientifi c Anglers- We thought this choice was a no-brainer, since we liked how the Bristle Tac performed, and was produced by a company with connections in the fl y-fi shing industry, meant great availability. Not so. But we have found a box with material similar to Bristle-Tac and we can get it with the LaFontaine logo. It is now "Hook-Lock", not Bristle Tac. We are carrying one size — 5-1/2"x3-3/4"x1-1/4" which is approximately the same size as our most popular medium-sized box. It has Hook-Lock on the top and bottom, and pretty much looks just like our original box except these are forest green and have a Gary LaFontaine Private Label Flies logo imprinted in gold. We like the Hook-Lock because it is easy to insert and remove fl ies. It will work on fl ies from size 6 to 18. The Hook-Lock system allows for great air fl ow so hooks that have seen some action dry quickly. The lightweight, durable SAN plastic boxes feature tight fi tting lids, full length piano hinges with brass pines, non-glare, non-slip grained fi nish; lanyard eyelet, and easy-open recessed latches. the Book Mailer has done it!~~Sparkle Yarn (yes, the offi cial colors)~~

What is the most frustrating problem with Antron yarn? Find-ing it. It is a miracle material -- just look in any fl y tying catalog and you'll see how it has been embraced since it was fi rst used on the Sparkle Pupa in 1972. But there are many different types of Antron, and only one type yarn was chosen by Gary for fl y tying.

To ensure the availability of the right type of Antron yarn for our own fl ies, your own personal tying, we contracted for produc-tion runs of custom colors of this perfect yarn.

1 color per bag (enough for hundreds of fl ies) Price -- 90 cents

(#Y217) - Golden Russet (#Y208) - Brown(#Y207) - Dark Gray (#Y215) - Ginger(#Y212) - Light Gray (#Y216) - Peach(#Y209) - Yellow (#Y214) - Olive(#Y210) - Pink (#Y206) - Dark Green(#Y211) - White (#Y297) - Apple Green

All 12 colors (#Y218) Special Price -- $10.00-----------------------------------------------------------

And, since we have the yarn (custom colors with35% clear Antron fi bers), we decided to offer it’s companion~

(painstakingly packaged by elves)~~Touch Dubbing~~

This is the fastest way to dub; no other method will form bodies as sparse and fuzzy. It is used for the bodies on Sparkle Pupa pat-terns and is absolutely essential for of the touch dubbing technique.

view and learn more about the touch dubbing techniqueFishing and Tying Caddisfl ies video (p.28)

The segment on the Sparkle Pupa shows how to touch dub.

The yarn or fur has to be chopped into small bits by hand and then tossed into a blender. The tyer uses a tacky wax (for example, BT's Super Tacky, see right-hand column) to coat the tying thread, and then he holds a ball of the fi nely cut dubbing mix and touches that ball to the sticky thread. His fi ngers never touch the thread – just the dubbing ball. That's it!

1 color per bag (enough for hundreds of fl ies) Price -- $1.95

(#T234) - Golden Russet (#T225) - Brown(#T224) - Dark Gray (#T232) - Ginger(#T229) - Light Gray (#T233) - Peach(#T226) - Yellow (#T231) - Olive(#T227) - Pink (#T223) - Dark Green(#T228) - White (#T298) - Apple Green

High Demand! ~~Umpqua Bright Green Yarn~~Umpqua Bright Green Yarn~~ ~~

Sometime in the past Umpqua Feather Merchants began tying the Sparkle Pupa patterns with a bright fl uorescent green yarn. Our private tyers continued to used the Dark Green (#Y206) per Gary's instructions. At one point, we had Umpqua use Gary's dark green and there were protests from fl y shop owners far and wide. So now you have a choice; use the color that best matches the caddis in your area. (#Y203) Price -- 90 cents per pack

~ Custom supplies for LaFontaine Patterns ~Getting into the business of supplying fl y tying materials has been great. Our readers kept asking about the special items used on Gary's fl ies.

To clear up any confusion, here is a listing of what we offer.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Umpqua Green, Dark Green, Olive Green and Apple Green all four colors, (#2014) Price -- $4.50

the Earth Yarn CollectionGolden Russet, Brown, Ginger and dark Grey

all four colors (#2015) Price -- $4.00

I don't know if rearranging the yarn like this will help you guys out or not, we just seem to use some colors a lot more than others.

~~Clear Antron~~

What is Antron? Antron refl ects light. It is Nylon, but the fi laments of regular Nylon are round and the fi laments of Antron are 3 or 4 sided. Those fl at sides bounce back light rays and make Antron sparkle. The fi rst fl ies ever tied with Antron ware the Deep Sparkle Pupa, Emergent Sparkle Pupa, and Diving Caddis.

(used for wings on the Clear Wing Spinner, Diving Caddis,Flying Ant, and other patterns from Trout Flies)

1 bag (#Y243) Clear Antron Price -- $2.75-----------------------------------------------------------

~~BT's Fly Tying Wax~~

This is the fi nest fl y tying wax since the long-gone Overton's Wonder Wax. It staystays soft ~~ it staysstays on the thread ~~ it grabsgrabs the short-fi bered Touch Dubbing and makes a beautifully fuzzy and sparse body. Match the color of your thread to the color of the Touch Dubbing ~~ run BT's Wax up and down the thread once ~~ and touch dub to your heart's content.

(#W425) BT's "Regular" Tacky Wax Price -- $ 4.95(for size 12 and smaller –less "tacky" or stiff as the Super Tacky Wax)

(#W276) BT's "Super" Tacky Wax Price -- $4.95(for size 10 and larger)

-----------------------------------------------------------AND FOR THE VERY END OF YOUR TIPPET--

BT's Float-EZY Simply the best fl y fl otant available. Like other fl otants it fl oats the fl y very well but it has two additional unique properties. It does'nt melt on a hot day and is still quite usable on a cool fall morning. Below 38 degrees it gets fairly stiff. But then, so do we.

(#C3035) Price -- $3.95--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WE GET E-MAILS: I have some tan sparkle yarn from an order years ago but I don’t see it in your listing anymore (try ginger). If it’s not available now, will it become available soon? This is the best all around color as far as I’m concerned and I have tried them all.

Also, many of the sparkle pupa’s I see in fl y shops are obviously tied with a coarser antron yarn in place of the type of yarn you sell. Do these fl ies catch fi sh as well as the one’s tied with your yarn? (another topic, another catalog!) I fi sh a lot with the deep sparkle pupa and soft hackle fl ies. It doesn’t seem to matter where I fi sh, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Utah, Colorado, the same fl ies seem to be good fi sh getters.

————————————MONTANA SNOW-PRECIPIATION UPDATE———————————— The good news is the snow gods have smiled down on Montana

this January. But will our prayer dances on the ski slopes please them enough to keep showering the state with their blessings? We can only keep at it and wait and see. There was good accumulation of snowpack reported in most Montana basins this January. With the majority of river basins showing an Average 91-110% Snow Water Equivalent increasethis month. The Bitterroot & Madison rivers are above averageat 111 & 116% respectively. The Clark Fork is the only one below average at 88%. The above-average snow pack means we are making up ground towards our Seasonal Precipitation (rain & snow water equiva-lent) as a percent of normal for the 2008 Water Year that began on 10/1/07. But will the drought be left in the dust? So far most of Montana is split down the middle with eleven river basins at 91-110% seasonal precip. with low score going to the Upper Clark Fork, and nine at 111-117% high score going to the Madison River Basin. The next few months will tell the tale.

Man vs. FishThe Fly Fisherman's Eternal Struggle

by Taylor Streit Man vs. Fish is short stories of fi shing from New Mexico to Argentina. Streit and his side-kick "superfl y" get "hooked" into the tail of great marlin and in a more real life scenario—by walking barefoot in the living room carpet—wonder who left the hook lay-ing around? The fl y-tyer Taylor? This is the kind of reading that will inspire you to thrash your way to a wild place, don waders, and become part of the action. Taylor guides out of Taos and Chama, New Mexico and takes anglers to Argentina each winter.

"All the tales are good fun and great writing. There's some wonderful satire to boot . . . These stories catch fi sh. And all of them are hefty lunkers."

OOOOOOFish With What You Find

by Jim Gilsdorf This is a little gem you won't fi nd just anywhere~ Jim Gilsdorf has been writing a column in his fl y-fi shing club’s newsletter for several years. Each chapter is a story along with a pattern and recipe. The chapters are short, good down home fi shing. Here are some of the chapter titles: Roadkill and the Fly Tyer, The Religion of Release, Not So Rolling Stones, Ale and Vin, Madtoms and Englishmen, Laying Down with Sally. Gotta admit, kinda fun. One thing of special note—some chapters are about fi shing in winter. This is a season that doesn't get attention—makes the book more unique and great for "how-to".

Trout Rigs and MethodsAll You Need to Know to Construct Rigs That Work for All Types of Trout Flies and the Most Effective Fishing

Methods for Catching More and Larger Troutby Dave Hughes

Hughes's clear and simple instruction describes 18 trout rigs and 81 methods to fi sh them. For moving water: rigs and methods for dry fl ies and emergers, nymphs, wet fl ies, streamers, dry fl ies, and droppers. For stillwater: dry fl ies and sunk fl ies. Fly fi shers learn the specifi cs of the rig—types of fl y line, lengths and tapers of leader and tippet, the fl ies, and split shot, putty weight, strike indicators, droppers, point fl ies, and indica-tors—the full array of methods to present the rig to the trout. Instructive illustrations throughout. The more rigs you learn to construct and the more methods you learn to apply, the more situa-tions you'll solve, and the more trout you'll catch.

Some basic necessities . . .Each Book Mailer takes on its own rhythm and tone as we sort through what is newly available in print and DVD's. It morphs into itself and

well, I guess it becomes the Book Mailer. Each issue is different in the end. This winter I fi nd a real lack of print. Books are at a minimum. Some of the familiar publishers are focused on "pocket sized" or "series" books, not something our readers fi nd desirable overall. Some publishers are pro-ducing fewer fl y-fi shing titles. For the past ten years that I know of, most fl y-fi shing titles have been published by a handful of publishers, each offering multiple selections. Today I am seeing numerous publishers doing only one fl y-fi shing title. This makes our chase a little harder, but we are learning the curve and the offerings are unique and diverse. The other side of print is DVD’s. These are exploding. I know we up-load at least a dozen new DVD’s each month to the website. We have never seen quantities of book titles like this. There is very little that weighs in on the negative side of DVD's. They are light and inexpensive to ship. They are small, consistent in size and easy to inventory. We do have more defective DVD's than books. This is because DVD player technology is constantly changing and there are a couple of methods for replication of DVD's–some are done on the cheap side. Those that are trying to save money now will only get away with it for so long. Production quality of DVD content is greatly increasing. The fi lming is gradually get-ting up there to rival what we see in theatres. This extra effort in the fi lming process carries through to the reproduction side and so overall quality of DVD's are on the rise. We’ll do everything on our part to make sure your selection is usable to you. Bearing all this–it is a smooth cast onward and if you are looking for a certain topic there already is or soon will be a DVD to cover it. Our newsletter selections are based on your buying preferences, but the website (thebookmailer.com) offers so much more. If you don’t have internet access feel free to call, and we can search for something that meets your need. So, while book selection feels short to me this issue, DVD selection is amazing. But it is the shortness of print that makes showcasing John Gierach's Fool’s Paradise so special. This is his tradition and it verifi es that books will go on. It is John's way and we are glad of it. I don't expect DVD's to replace books. I suspect we are in the initial surge and a level will be reached in a couple of years. As I look towards our Spring newsletter, I don't see a lot of new books, although I expect DVD selections to remain strong. Since LaFontaine Legacy (p.21) will be released during the summer months when we don't mail, we're going to showcase his book. We think Gary deserves his own issue and we're going to have some fun with that. That's about it for trends in reading, watching and learning fl y fi shing. If you are doing any of it —feel lucky.

~Why Fly Fishing~ In 1968, a small and devoted group of people came together to make real the idea that the history and artifacts of fl y fi shing deserve a permanent home. From modest beginnings, and through the dedication and hard work of volunteers, friends and employees, the American Museum of Fly Fishing in Manchester, Vermont has grown to become an amazing place: a repository for the artifacts and anecdotes of a magical sport and pastime. In this marvelous production you will fi nd out why Joan Wulff, John Gierach, and Flip Pallot love to fl y fi sh. You’ll hear from Nick Lyons how fl y fi shing has infl uenced great writer’s and from James Prosek, how fl y fi shing and nature come together with palette and brush. Since the Museum is a 501-c-3 charitable organization, $25 of the purchase price of the DVD is tax-deductible donation. And that is why we are promoting it and doing the DVD distribution—for the sole purpose of assisting the Museum and growing interest and participation in fl y fi shing. We’re not making any money, so please make us feel good about ourselves! (PS- where else are you going to see John Gierach on fi lm?)(#3777) DVD; 31 min. Price-- $30.00

GET OUT OF THE CARThis is supposedly a true account recorded

in the Police Log of Sarasota, Florida

An elderly Florida lady did her shopping and, upon return-ing to her car, found four males in the act of leaving with her vehicle. She dropped her shopping bags and drew her handgun, proceeding to scream at the top of her lungs, "I have a gun, and I know how to use it! Get out of the car!" The four men didn't wait for a second threat. They got out and ran like mad. The lady, somewhat shaken, then proceeded to load her shopping bags in the back of the car and got into the driver's seat. She was so shaken that she could not get her key into the ignition. She tried and tried, and then she realized why. It was for the same reason she had wondered why there was a football, a Frisbee and two 12-packs in the front seat. A few minutes later, she found her own car parked four or fi ve spaces farther down. She loaded her bags into the car and drove to the police station to report her mistake. The sergeant she told the story to couldn't stop laughing. He pointed to the other end of the counter, where four pale men were reporting a car jacking by a mad, elderly woman described as white, less than fi ve feet tall, glasses, curly white hair, and carrying a large handgun. No charges were fi led. Moral of the story? If you're going to have a senior moment . . . make it memorable.

-------------------- Don’t laugh, I had to retire my little get-about town car, Rhonda Honda this winter. I replaced it and my larger SUV is a Subaru Forester. It was no small feat with the research and the tussle with the car dealership –trying to keep the salesmen focused on what I wanted to spend my money on rather than what they thought I should spend my money on. Imagine, a car salesman who knows more about me than me . . . At any rate I fi nally found the right car salesman and away I went. I work a couple nights a week at a local art house, we have two movie screens and do live performances. This is non-profi t organization, managed by some very dedicated individuals and I’m very fond of my little part-time job. It’s usually late when I leave, and not long after the new car purchase I was heading home. I couldn’t quite fi gure out why my key wouldn’t open my car door. From behind me I heard someone say “Ah, ma’am, that isn’t your car.” Sure enough, mine was farther down. Now is this old age, not paying enough attention, or are there too many cars that look alike? I’m just glad the owner didn’t carry a gun and had enjoyed their performance. Otherwise, this story might have had a different ending also.

Some avid anglers, who are also hunters, have discovered how to make their fun last year-round.

This work is the foundation of how to fl y fi sh. It's the fi rst serious book the beginning fl y fi sher-man should read -- and in many ways its the last serious book the advanced fl y fi sherman should read. Coming . . . the rest of the patterns. LaFontaine Legacy is a book Gary knew was there, it just had to typed. During his last years he entrusted Al Beatty and Paul Stimpson with this mission. They produced the LaFontaine Originals (p.28) and every time they got together, this book was part of the topic and the friend-ship. An established master with bamboo, Russ Gooding of Golden Witch Technologies, takes the classic bamboo rod building aesthetic and translates it to the modern graphite blank. This comprehensive guide to building a graphite fl y rod focuses on a 7'6" 4-weight, but the tools and techniques used can be applied to a wide range of rods. This production goes into great detail on each and every step, using close-up shots, multiple angles, and repetition where needed to ensure that even a total novice builder will be able to build a fl y rod that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. With that said, the program is also loaded with tips and tricks, that even an advanced rod builder is sure to learn something new. Few builders are as accomplished at executing the popular, decorative feather inlays as Russ and they have become one of his trademarks. We’re not talking about a piece of “never take out of the tube rod art” here, we’re talking about a fl y rod that is meant to be fi shed. Follow the steps outlined in this program and the end result will be a fl y rod that is beautiful, personal, and will rival the performance of any rod on the market today. Don't miss Golden Witch's other DVDs on bamboo (p.6).

N E W !Norris on Trout Fishing

Norris on Trout Fishing samples both the expertise and the Norris on Trout Fishing samples both the expertise and the Norris on Trout Fishinggenerous warmth that made Thaddeus Norris (1811-1877) such a beloved fi gure in American angling. From his wise portrayal of the many types of anglers, to the biology and behavior of native American brook trout, to his touching portrait of the now-extinct Michigan grayling. Norris set a standard for thought that educated and inspired succeeding generations and still offers wisdom today. His concluding essay on the joys of fi shing alone is regarded as a primary milestone of angling phi-losophy that set the tone for works of some of our later writers, like Gingrich, Schwiebert and Gierach.

—and— Skues on TroutObservations from an Angler Naturalist

George Edward MacKenzie Skues has been described not only as that father of nymph fi shing but as the greatest fl y fi sher who ever lived. He was also modest, humorous, and warmly companionable writer. Skues was the rarest of angling authori-ties, the iconoclast with a reverential respect for fl y-fi shing’s traditions. He had a rare gift for sifting through many generations’ accumulation of opinion and advice, keeping only what was truly useful and adapting it to the needs of anglers in a rapidly changing world. Skues on Trout showcases one of angling's greatest theorists sharing his hard-won wisdom along his be-loved trout streams.

Dead Madonnaby Victoria Houston

All the characters are back, Police Chief Lew Ferris, Doc Osborne, and that incorrigible Ray Pratt. New dead people, new unpleasant characters, and adventures in the delightful Wisconsin Loon Lake setting. I am about two-thirds of the way through this one and it is very much in keeping with the fi rst of the series. So, if you've read these, you will want this one and if you haven't, but you enjoy a light read with fun characters and a fl y fi shing theme—this one's for you.

Trout Flies to tie the Tear Drop Nymph.

During Gary's scuba diving observations he played with fl uorescence for nymph patterns. The result was a fl y with a little bit of this unnatural aura, the Tear Drop Nymph, that caught trout in incredible numbers. You need the Uni-Glo vinyl material for the abdomen.

Uni-Products Tying Thread Uni-Products has been a great company to work with since we started carrying Uni-Glo back at the turn of the last century. Their products have held up well and demand has been consistent. And since my instructor whole heartily endorsed Uni-Thread and Paul Stimpson uses this for his tying, I was confi dent this was the company to start with. Plus there is the great offer from Uni-Products. With every combo pack of thread, we will include their unique booklet, FREE! "How to Choose & Use Fly Tying Thread". A 48-page booklet explaining everything from thread construction, thread materials, the new Denier method for establishing thread size to Bobbins, Thread Opera-tions, Ribs, Hackles, Spinning Hair and just a whole lot of concise, illustrated tips about thread and fl y construction. It really made2 + 2 = 4 for me, and even if you have tied for a very long time, you will fi nd this handy little guide useful. Remember, knowledge is power and Uni-Products has made this very easy for us.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Subject: Two Rednecks Bubba and Earl, were driving down the road drinking a couple of bottles of Budweiser. The passenger, Bubba, said, “Lookey thar up ahead, Earl, it's a dadgum police roadblock!! We're gonna get busted fer drinkin' these here beers!" "Don't worry, Bubba," Earl said. "We'll just pull over and fi nish drinkin' these beers then peel off the label and stick it on our foreheads then throw the bottles under the seat." "What fer?" asked Bubba. "Just let me do the talkin', O.K.?," said Earl. Well, they fi nished their beers, threw the empties out of sight and put the labels on each of their fore heads. When they reached the roadblock, the sheriff said, "Howdy boys ya'll been drinkin'?" "No sir," said Earl while pointing at the labels... "Me and Bubba's on the Patch."

(Tip: the listed leader length includes three feet of tippet. So if you purchase a nine foot leader, it will actually come out of the package a total of six feet in length. Now add your tippet!)

~ Fluorocarbon UNIFORM-SINK LEADERS ~ The best way to describe how the Uniform-Sink Leader fi shes is to picture using it on a lake with a fl oating line. When it is cast out it fi shes at a 45 degree angle from the end of the fl oating line. It does the same thing in rivers but is harder to envision because of the effect of moving water. The Uniform Sinking Leader is a great nymph leader and pulls streamer patterns down those few extra inches that make all the difference. The enjoyment of being able to fi sh at different levels of the water column and not having to worry about the diffi culty of casting a sink tip fl y line (which seldom goes where you want it to go in the fi rst place), is a big bonus. Casting furled leaders puts a smile on your face and makes your day of fi shing far more productive to boot!

~ Fluorocarbon FULL-SINK FURLED LEADERS ~ These Full-Sink Leaders are tremendous for deep water nymphing and streamer techniques. They kick air–resistant, weighted fl ies over wonderfully; and cut through the currents to carry those patterns deep. But the greatest use for Full-Sink is for stillwater fl y fi shing. In lakes these leaders sink straight, without a belly; and that is such an incredible advantage when it comes to setting the hook. Our Full-Sink will increase your catch rate by 15 to 25 percent in stillwa-ters simply because you will set the hook so much quicker.

STRIKE INDICATOR FLOATING FURLED LEADERS

Our friend George Beech has been expanding his fabulous line of leaders. These new Strike Indicator Leaders are the same as the Floating Furled Leaders exceptexcept that the fi rst 18" except that the fi rst 18" exceptis colored red. This is the 18 inches at the start of your leader, where it attaches to your line. Grease the red section for higher buoyancy. This is an excellent leader for shallow water nymphing situations. If you're trying to mark a certain depth to fl oat a wet fl y, nymph or emerger, just grease the leader with fl oatant from the line attachment section towards your fl y stopping at the point where you want your fl y hanging below the surface. This won't fi x all delicate nymph strikes, but it can sure help out—especially in hard-to-see situations and when using an emerger.

These all come with a ring to attach your tippet and are5-feet in total length.

~ UNIFORM-SINK ~ FULL-SINK ~ FLOATING ~Here are some select style and size combinations from a list of about 150 our supplier offers.

Any of the others can be special ordered -- visit www.thebookmailer.com for a full listing.Metal Rings are so popular, that we're only stocking those with rings (but if you're "old school" we can special order ones without).

*************************************************************************************** An ancient idea. Modern materials. Put them together and you have the fi nest leader for dry fl y fi shing and shallow water nymphing. The Furled Leader is specifi cally designed for transmitting power between the fl y line and the tippet. It allows the angler to cast accurately and delicately with slack line presentations in all conditions at varying distances. A Furled Leader is not hollow in the center. They're solid, don't spray water, and turn over the fl y beautifully – even in windy conditions. There are three styles of furled leaders, Floating, Uni-form-Sink and Full-Sinking. A leader for every fl y fi shing situation. Leaders now come with a metal ring on the tippet end. This precision crafted ring extends the life of your leader so there is no "accidentally" clipping the monofi llement while changing tippet. The ring option has been tried and tested by our wonderful house list of customers and this is a win-win, fi sh-fi sh combination.

IN OUR NEVER-TO-BE-HUMBLE OPINION, THE BEST LEADER YOU CAN USE!Be sure to check out thebookmailer.com for a complete listing of available styles of Furled Leaders.

| Winter 2008 Newsletter |---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

He who laughs last, thinks slowest.

Its another edition of the Book Mailer and there are many outstanding new items to choose and explore. Our feature, Fool’s Paradise by John Gierach is a sure-fi re winner. John is trying to have a book out about every two years, it just depends on how the writing goes and how much fi shing presents itself in between. Sometimes the research has to be done fi rst. Signed copies will be available, John goes to our book distributor’s warehouse and signs for a couple of days—we try to have our best estimate of what we want for autographed copies by that time. Once he’s done signing, he generally doesn’t go back for more. So if you’re of a mind to have an autographed copy, sign up now. John is also stars in the new Why Fly Fishing DVD along with Joan Wulff, Nick Lyons, and Flip Pallot. It was commissioned by The American Fly Fishing Museum as part of an exhibit and to promote and share the grace of fl y fi shing. All proceeds go towards the Museum and are tax-deductible.

We are seeing a lot of imports, information (usually in DVD format) that is being shared across the seas. Fly fi shing is a very old sport and its success and beauty was originally founded somewhere else, even though our ego’s might like to think otherwise . . . however it is exciting to see the sharing and melding of techniques and ideas. Some across-the seas DVDs to check out are European Nymphingby Jack Dennis & Vladi Trazebunia (p.2), and by the Trout Bum dudes Fish Bum 1: Mongolia - River Wolf , also Fish Bum 1: Mongolia - River Wolf , also Fish Bum 1: Mongolia - River Wolf Fly Casting for Better Fly Fishings (p.5), Mel Krieger’s Patagonia and End of the Road (p.23), and a book from England on How to Fish (p.6). There are also several new books & DVDs to help us in our pur-suit. Fly tyers don’t miss Jack Dennis’ Beginning Fly Tying Collec-tion (p.2)—it can’t be best in price, the Beatty’s Rotary Fly Tyingbook (p.3), and Shane Stalcup & Jeff “Bear” Andrews have several new DVDs out (p.4). Everyone could use 1001 Fly Fishing Tips by Jay Nichols, Basic Stream Flies by Jim Schollmeyer, and fi nd out the answer to the question, “Do fi sh fake orgasms?” (p.3). Some new DVDs out for admirers of rod building are Sporting Fly’s latest volume about bamboo artisan, Jerry Kustich, and the Ruby River (p.4); Golden Witch Technologies has out Making Bamboo Rod Blanks, Finishing Bamboo Rods (p.6), and How to Build a Graphite Fly Rod (p.21); and Making Strip-Built Fly Rods (p.6).

The LaFontaine Black June (p.8) is back by special request. If you haven’t tried this all-around fi sh-getter yet—you have been missing out. Also the reintroduction of our LaFontaine Private Label Fly Box (p.14). This has been discontinued for some time and we have fi nally nailed down a distributor. They function has well as the old style, but with the hot, new look of our LaFontaine logo. The 2008 Big Sky Journal: Fly-Fishing Edition has just hit the shelf along with the fl y-fi shing forecast, Tight Lines 2008 (p. 17). While you’re there, read the latest update for Montana’s Snow-Precip Report. I think fl y fi shing is truly an international sport. Transcend-ing race, religion, color and even politics. Speaking of, be sure to check out Blue Man in a Red State, (p.5) written about Montana’s governor, Brian Schweitzer. I had to throw that in for the surprise, but I would guess many of you are politically informed and watching this election year closely. There is no doubt it is shaping up to be an interesting race. Is it just my age that makes me pay attention or am I getting smarter or more boring?? At any rate while there is much I would like to change, issues that make me hotter than heck, it is nice to know that no matter what goes on beyond my control, the waters remain constant. The fi sh are stay-ing healthy, enjoying a measure of protection from myself and many of you, they are given the space to grow heavy and old. And when it all gets to be too much—away I go to fi nd them.

Casting about for the meaning of life, wish us luck. ~Cathy & Marcy (for the Book Mailer)
