LETTER FROM A PARISHINER

“Dear Neighbour,  I would like to say a big  thank you to the anonymous 'neighbour' for being  so generous to myself and family at Christmas. It came at a time of despair and sadness, I will keep the letter for  times in the future when feeling low as it will always make me smile.I can't say how emotional I felt when opening the letter, it was wonderful, I will always be grateful. Unfortunately  my husband passed away  in hospital at Christmas,  but he did know about the gift, he was also very grateful as he was fretting about not having earned any money in the last year as he was so ill, it made him feel that we could have a decent Christmas. I hope this letter reaches the person that is responsible. Thank you again, A Very Grateful Family”

News from Great Totham Primary SchoolMessage from the Head teacherAlongside a balanced and varied curriculum, we believe it is important to offer our pupils a range of interesting and stimulating extra-curricular activities which help to develop a range of skills and allows the children to demonstrate and develop their talents.Keith Bannister, Headteacher

School News:A whole host of exciting and interesting clubs are offered to our pupils by staff and external professionals before and after school and during lunchtimes. Below is a snapshot of some of the clubs available to our pupils.

There are many sporting clubs ranging from netball to hockey. The pupils also enjoy the expertise of professionals who run our football and golf clubs. We are very keen to ensure the children have a chance to follow up their initial interest, so we have developed partnerships with local clubs and organisations such as: Beacon Hill Football, Wickham Bishops Tennis Club, Forrester Golf Club and Maldon Hockey Club.

Music is highly valued at the school and lunchtime infant and junior recorder clubs allow the children to learn to play the recorder and to read music notation. The school choir practises hard and regularly performs to the school in assemblies.

On Friday evenings, the schools hosts ‘Great Totham Music Makers’ a music school which is open to both children and adults and offers tuition on piano, keyboard, woodwind, brass, strings, voice, guitar and drums. There is also a choir, a band and theory groups available to join. More information can be found at www.essex.gov.uk.

Drama Club is an extremely popular club which not only allows the children to express themselves freely, but also develops their speaking and listening skills. ‘We can cook’ is an excellent club which teaches the children how to prepare healthy food safely and hygienically. Pupils enjoy tasting many new foods and preparing a meal for 4 people which they then take home to share with their families.Children are full of questions and curiosity which is why our Science Club (run by an external provider) is so popular. Pupils discover and learn fascinating scientific facts through fun, hands-on experiments.

Wildlife Club is a firm favourite across both key stages; the children enjoy exploring the school habitat and identifying the many different plant, bird and animal species living on our doorstep.

At lunchtimes, our pupils have the opportunity to attend our ‘Doodle and Draw’ art club where they can be creative and create their own masterpieces or they can follow step-by-step instructions to develop their drawing skills. There is also a weekly Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 ‘Construction Club’ where children use their imaginations to build magnificent structures using Lego! We are shortly introducing a Christian Club to be run by Father Stuart Batten and Rev. Jonathan Pearce.

Gardeners Corner – February 2012

Spring is just around the corner and with the warm weather during January you may already be seeing the heads of some of the early bulbs poking up. February is a good month to tender your beds in preparation for the spring and the summer.

Spend this month: Mulching your garden with well rotted manure or soil improver, It’s still not too late to plant some last minute bulbs (bargain bin

bulbs will still be worth their money). Tidy up the last of the leaves. Apply general fertiliser to asparagus beds. Remove debris from around the garden to reduce hiding places for

snails and slugs. Plant new fruit trees and bushes. Set out potato tubers in trays to chit.

Happy gardening! Jon Aldis, Goodlife Countryside Services. 01621 892808
