President’s Column . . . James MarekBeing the Hands

Not far from our house is a verynice sports complex. The complex hasnumerous ball fields thatattract huge crowds al-most every weekend foryouth baseball and soft-ball tournaments. Thesports complex bringsmany people and a greatamount of money to thebusinesses in our com-munity and provides aplace for many young people to enjoyparticipating in sports. Sports com-plexes like the one in our hometownare increasingly more common, as isthe reality that sporting events areoften held on Sunday mornings. Ihave participated in more than oneconversation where the participantscomplained about games being heldon Sundays and how bad it is thatthese events take families – espe-cially young people, away from Sun-day School and Church. We havereminisced how when we were youngSundays and Wednesdays were churchdays and sporting events were never

scheduled on those days. To myknowledge, none of these conversa-

tions have ever led toanything positive, otherthan to identify an obvi-ous problem. One thataffects the church andthe family.

Several weeks ago, ourpastor announced that anew outreach effort hadbeen started in our com-

munity. The outreach was being car-ried out by the widow of a Lutheranpastor in our community. The lady’sfirst name is Grace. Grace is at least inher late 70s, if not early 80s, and shehas felt called to bring Sunday Schoolto the sports complex. I saw her in thebank one day and asked her how shemanages to pull this outreach minis-try off each Sunday. With a smile onher face she said, “I take a batterypowered DVD player and the rest ofmy stuff and I pile it in a wheelchairand push it across the grounds. Peopleusually come rushing up to me and

ask me if they can help. I then tellthem what I am doing and invite themto the Sunday School class. She said,“People see an older lady pushing awheelchair and feel sorry for me. I usethat to recruit my students.” She wenton to say that she believed that thechurches of tomorrow would be inball parks and other places that peopleenjoy visiting.

When Grace told me her story, Iwas inspired, amazed, humbled, andembarrassed. What a wonderful ideaand solution Grace has put into ac-tion. While I had just exhibited a keensense for the obvious and complainedabout baseball games being playedon Sunday, Grace had seen the prob-lem as an opportunity and moved to

answer God’s call. In other words, Iwas just a nose – detecting a problembut doing nothing to solve it. Grace,on the other hand, has become thehands necessary to reach people“where they are”. I have often said, the church needs more hands than itdoes noses – Grace has moved pastthe talk and actually done somethingto address a need by serving people.

I heard someone say that Chris-tianity is not so much about bringingpeople to Christ as it is bringingChrist to the people. Thank God for“hands” like Grace. If you have a ballpark in your area that hosts games onSunday and have complained aboutit, maybe God is calling you to be aGrace in your community.

We need tohave vision to see the possibilities.Spiritual disciplines practiced includeservice, sacrifice, Bible reading, medi-tation, prayer and pilgrimage – goingto a place where God did somethingspecial for an individual such as theHus Encampment. Sometimes we needto clean our spiritual glasses and tryto see things not as they are, but asthey can be. All joined in singing 3verses of “Just as I am.”

3. The Unity Prayer was read byPresident Marek.

“Holy Spirit, as in the past youunited different men and women andmade them one, so bring us togetherin a oneness that celebrates our di-versity of talent and ability. May ourpersonalities blend in a superb har-mony, as, laying our egos aside, welearn to prefer one another and todelight in encouraging the gifts wesee in others. Let there be no startemperament, no prima donna behav-ior among us, but a sense of en-semble, as we try to be as anonymousas possible so that you can shinethrough our efforts to the glory ofChrist. And when all is done may we

be in the wings and HE in the spot-light, taking center stage and receiv-ing all the applause! Holy Spirit, youwho are fully God and yet so anony-mous, hide us that we may reveal Him.Amen.”

The Giving and Stewardship Cor-ner is a small way of reminding uswhat the Bible has to say aboutgiving and stewardship. Generosityis not only an act of worship but anexpression of our gratitude to Godour Father and provider. Giving isalso a spiritual discipline that pro-motes spiritual development and ma-turity. Malachi 3:8-10 “Will a mere mor-tal rob God? Yet you rob me. “Butyou ask, ‘How are we robbingyou?’“In tithes and offerings. Youare under a curse – your wholenation – because you are robbingme. Bring the whole tithe into thestorehouse, that there may be food inmy house. Test me in this,” says theLORD Almighty, “and see if I will notthrow open the floodgates of heavenand pour out so much blessing thatthere will not be room enough tostore it.”

By-Laws – why do we have them?I went to the internet for an answerand found that churches have by-laws to promote efficiency, to providedirection, to preserve unity and main-tain its testimony (a church shouldagree on certain issues), and to pro-tect itself from liability. While somepeople are not very interested in by-laws, they are an important part of theUnity and all churches should havetheir own by-laws.

The word “diligent” is used sev-eral times in our Constitution and By-Laws. What should we be diligent indoing? Let’s take a look at what theby-laws say about it. The Unity Sec-retary has the responsibility to “dili-gently care for the Unity of theBrethren’s official documents, books, etc.”, while the Unity treasurer is tobe diligent with the Unity of theBrethren’s funds. The following isstated in the Constitution, Article IV.Membership, paragraph 6:

“If one member is afflicted, thewhole body suffers; therefore, everycongregation and pastor in the Unity

Let’s Take a Look at What the By-Laws Say….- by Liz Ripple

of the Brethren should diligently la-bor for the welfare of the Unity of theBrethren, abide by its Constitutionand By-Laws, fulfill the decisions ofthe Convention, materially supportits work, and concern themselveswith the discipline and spiritual growthof all members, so that congregationsand pastors may become a blessingto their membership and a light to thewhole community.”

In looking at the By-Laws from1959 (the earliest version that I have),the wording in the paragraph above isalmost identical to our document to-day. I hardly hear the word “afflicted”anymore, and if you didn’t know, itmeans distressed. This paragraph isdeep in content and meaning. To meit’s saying that some things do notcome easy and we – members andpastors – must work hard and bepersistent in the work of Christ, and indoing so, we can be a light to every-one we meet.

Next time – how will next year’sUnity of the Brethren convention bedifferent than others?

into his own sermons, the groundupon which he stood grew moreunstable.

Wycliffe’s works had already beendeemed heretical and some 200 vol-umes of his books had already beenpublicly burned in Prague. Hus delib-erately put himself even further inharm’s way. He knew only too wellthat he, too, could be deemed a her-etic in the eyes of man if he continuedto write and preach that which he soearnestly believed.

Hus never flinched and remainedtrue to both his faith and his personalconvictions.

The Council at Constance wascalled and Hus was promised threethings if he attended.

Hus was to be granted safe pas-sage. He was to be given a freehearing. Finally, he was promised thatif he did not agree with the Council’sdecision, he would be allowed toreturn home. History tells us that onlythe first promise was kept.

Upon arrival Hus was arrested andplaced in a dungeon next to a sewerfor over three months, and then trans-ferred to a drafty tower of a castle onLake Geneva.

When brought before the Council,

the state of his physical health haddeteriorated. Hus now suffered fromneuralgia. His face was pale and hisarms and legs trembled. Yet, the lightin his eyes still shined brightly.

The outcome of the hearing, if onewere to be generous enough to call itthat, had already been determinedand Hus was declared guilty. Husknelt and his prayer for his persecu-tors was as sincere as it was beautiful.

“Lord Jesus Christ,” he said, “par-don all my enemies, I pray Thee, forthe sake of Thy great mercy! Thouknowest they have falsely accusedme, brought forward false witnessesand false articles against me. O! Par-don them for Thine infinite mercies’sake.”

A ceremony of degradation thentook place. Even the method in whichhis hair was to be sheared was asource of contention. Some demandeda razor while others clamored forscissors.

“See,” said Hus to the King, “theBishops cannot agree in theirblasphemy.”

The scissors eventually won out,and afterward Hus was forced to weara fool’s cap a yard high with a pictureof devils tearing at his soul.

“Most joyfully,” said Hus, “will Iwear this crown of shame for thysake, O! Jesus, who for me didst weara crown of thorns.”

As he was led in chains to theplace where he was to be burned, theprocession passed a street in whichhis books were already ablaze. His-tory records that Hus smiled as theypassed.

Hus was burned at the stake July

Some of the affirmations I appreci-ate most in life are those that comefrom my Sunday School students. AsI write this we are well into our studyof Mere Christianity by C. S. Lewis.Whenever a student thanks me forintroducing them to new material, Itake it as far more than gratitude. Itake it as an affirmation from God thatI am doing what He wants me to do.

Of course, with this come severalresponsibilities. Among them are se-lecting the material ahead of time andbecoming as familiar with it as ishumanly possible. For me that meansreading it several times and takingmany notes along the way. Fortu-nately, I am an avid reader and con-sider this a joy.

I also have to admit to my studentsthat I really do not feel as if I am theone selecting the material. What I amreally doing is trusting God to lead meto it. That is certainly the case withthe book I have chosen for our nextstudy, A History of the MoravianChurch by J. E. Hutton (1909). Whilebrowsing books on Amazon’s website,I was quite surprised when I came

The Big Picture- by Jim Pokorny

across this book while searching foranother. Intrigued, I previewed thefirst chapter and was so taken withwhat I read that I immediately orderedcopies for the class.

As I write this article in the monthof May, I am only too aware of the factthat it will be July as you read it. Julyis the month in which we celebrate thelife of John Hus, and one year fromnow will be the 600th anniversary ofhis martyrdom. It is with Hus thatHutton begins his historical narra-tive, and this is simply one morereason why I gratefully acknowledgeGod’s guidance.

Hus lived in a time of political andreligious turmoil, and the intrigues ofboth were hopelessly intertwined. Thecorruption that existed in each addedfuel to the rising flames of populardissent. As the writings of Wycliffe, the English reformer, came to theregion, even more fuel was added toan already volatile mixture.

Hus had already been on the at-tack, speaking against the vices ofthe clergy. As he studied the works ofWycliffe and incorporated his thoughts

As I conclude, I wish to leave youwith these very personal and partingthoughts.

You and I are but a small part of awonderful tapestry that God contin-ues to weave today. As such, we aresimply a small part of a much largerand wondrously beautiful picture. Godhas graciously given us a remarkableheritage, and ours is a very richhistory which still has chapters wait-ing to be written.

One of the themes that I see recur-ring time and again throughout ourhistory is that we have always beenmisunderstood. The same holds truetoday. It is only when we study ourhistory that we really understand wherewe came from and, consequently, whowe are.

As we better understand thesethings, we are better able to visualizethe vast untapped potential we haveat our disposal.

As we peel back the layers of time,we can easily see that God was with

us at each and every turn in our story. We can see that whenever some-

one tried to forever close the door onus, God was there to open a new doorfor us.

What was said of the church inPhiladelphia in the book of Revela-tion can also apply to us.

Revelation 3:8 (NET) – “I knowyour deeds. (Look! I have put in frontof you an open door that no one canshut.) I know that you have littlestrength, but you have obeyed Myword and have not denied My name.”

We see that God has preserved usnot only for a purpose, He preservedus for His purpose.

While some churches bicker aboutwhat sets them apart, our motto ringswith unmistakable clarity.

In essentials, unity; in nonessen-tials, liberty; in all things, love.

And, beyond this, our standingorder remains unchanged.

Our Lamb has conquered. Let usfollow Him!

16, 1415. As the fire was lit, Hus beganto pray, “Jesu, Son of David, havemercy upon me...” At this point theflames reached his face and the greatvoice so loved by the people washeard for the final time.

Yet Hus was just the first chapterof many chapters in our history.

There were chapters about othermen. Men like Peter of Chelcic, Gre-gory the Patriarch, Luke of Prague, and John Augusta to name but a few.

There were chapters about places.Places like Kunwald, Leitomischl,Jungbunnzlau and Lissa.

There were chapters about perse-cution and lies. Lies like when a manjoined the Brethren the devil taughthim how to read.

There were chapters about thedownfall, the arrest of 47 in one nightand the Day of Blood at Prague.

There were chapters about beingforced to take sides in a civil war, ofbeing forced to choose exile over con-version, and of having to obey therules of the lands that took them in.

But scattered among the darkestnights there were some glorious dawns.

There were chapters about whatthe children were taught. They weretaught The Apostles’ Creed, the Ten

Commandments, the Lord’s Prayer, the Eight Beatitudes, the “Six Com-mandments” of the Sermon on theMount and the epistles of St. John.

There were chapters about victo-ries. Victories like the Golden Age, theKralitz Bible, and the “Lamb and Flag”seal.

There were chapters about theglowing remarks made by Luther, Bucer,Calvin, and Melancthon.

And of course, there was the chap-ter about John Amos Comenius.Comenius was the last Bishop of theBohemian Brethren, theologian, au-thor and The Father of ModernEducation.

With the Thirty Years War hishome was pillaged, his many booksand manuscripts burned. He enduredthe loss of his wife and child. It wasat this dark hour that he wrote theclassic allegory, The Labyrinth of theWorld and the Paradise of the Heart, which my class has studied and Icannot recommend to you highlyenough. It was Comenius who led theBrethren exiles to Lissa in Poland.

And this is merely the first third ofHutton’s history. As I write this I havejust begun to study the revival underCount Zinzendorf.

could accommodate only a limitednumber of students. The residentstudents basically lived out of theirsuitcases, with no complaints whatever.

The bathroom and laundry facili-ties were located a short distanceaway from the rear of the building asshown, reminding the students fromthe rural areas of the familiar “out-houses” they used at home at thetime. The only thing missing mayhave been the previous year’s SearsRoebuck, Montgomery Ward, or J.C.Penny catalogs hanging on a wirerack on a side wall, and possibly alush chinaberry tree outside for shade. However, these separate men’s andwomen’s bathrooms had flush toiletsand bathing facilities, a real luxury. The laundry room was actually only awashhouse, and the clothes were driedon a three-line clothesline strung eastto west between two cedar posts witha braced cross bar at top. The prevail-ing south or north winds efficientlyfluff-dried the clothes attached to thelines with clothespins. Remember thosedays?

Saturday was “wash day”, andalso building and yard cleanup day.The lawn was mowed with a reel-typepush mower. Though the youngsters

lacked vacuum cleaners, their skillfuluse of brooms, dust-mops, dust cloths, and wet-mops soon had the buildingclean and ready for Sunday and thefollowing week’s activities.

Mrs. Marie Hegar was in charge ofthe kitchen and dining room and, withhelp provided by select lay womenduring the class sessions, she wasalso the substitute teacher for Rev.Hegar in his absence. Later, sonsJoseph and Daniel also helped. Manytimes the students or their familieswould bring eggs, butter, potatoes, peaches, plums, and fresh gardenvegetables from home. These treatswere not only welcomed and enjoyedby the students, but this also helpedstretch the budget. After all, a dozeneggs would cost as much as 12 to 15cents a dozen at the grocery store. You would be surprised what youcould buy for a $1 bill. The onlyproblem was, the dollar bills were asscarce as hens’ teeth! The averagewage for a day’s work on the farm, sunup to sunset, was one dollar aday. (This is recalled from experience.)

Fridays were observed as “playdays” with carloads of young peoplearriving from neighboring congrega-

The Hus Memorial School wasoriginally organized as a much-neededtraining program for Sunday Schoolteachers, held annually in variousBrethren churches. The 1924 classwas scheduled to meet in Temple, despite the fact that the Temple con-gregation did not own a church facil-ity. A rapid search for a suitable sitefor this class resulted in the purchaseof the abandoned Wedemeyer Acad-emy school building for $7,000.

After some initial repairs and afterbasic furnishings were quickly pro-vided, the building served as theperpetual site for the Hus MemorialSchool for the next 20 years. For 18 ofthose years, the building also housedthe principal and teacher, Rev. JosephHegar, and his family, until they pur-chased a home on South 1st Street inTemple. The second floor was utilizedeach Sunday for the Sunday Schooland worship services of the TempleBrethren Church pastored by Rev.Hegar – an arrangement that contin-ued with only a short break until June

1939, when the congregation built itsfirst small frame church building at808 East Central Avenue.

The floor plan, as shown in theaccompanying diagram, fairly wellrepresents the activities/uses of eachroom and the outbuildings as noted. The second floor was accessed by aset of stairs starting from the groundfloor on both sides of the wide hall, leading upward to a landing abovethe front door, and continuing up-ward as a single stair between the twomen’s dormitories to the second floorlevel. Designed and built to be aschool building, the facility lackedprovisions for personal comfort andconvenience such as kitchen cabi-nets and appliances, storage andclothes closets, bathrooms, and util-ity or laundry facilities. Yet the ab-sence of such amenities did not dampenthe spirit and enthusiasm in which thebuilding was accepted and utilized. Those of us who lived in Temple or innearby communities commuted toclasses each day, as the building

and have been “doing it” ever since! It is also well documented that theHus Memorial School was the mosteffective means of uniting the mem-bership of the different churches ofthe Unity of the Brethren in Texas.

Graduation exercises were held atthe completion of the 8-week HusSchool session. The four highest schol-ars were recognized, each of whomwould make a presentation on theprogram and be rewarded with a choicebook as a gift. One student – the classhistorian – reviewed the highlightsand activities of the class. Anotherstudent offered a class prophecy, forecasting the future achievementsof each student, and never failing togenerate some questionable and amus-ing moments. The graduating classoffered several musical numbers and, joined by all ex-students present, closed the program by singing “Hojverni v boj” under the dynamic direc-tion of Rev. Hegar. This was alwaysfollowed by many hugs, tears, andpromises to “stay in touch.”

Such was the life of a student ofthe Hus Memorial School in Temple,Texas, from 1924 to 1944, when theWedemeyer building was sold due toits rapid deterioration and excessiverepair costs. I was asked to recordthese memories from my perspectiveas an ex-student of the 1932 class andas a member of the Temple BrethrenChurch throughout the years in ques-tion. Hopefully these memories willhelp present and future generationsbetter understand the experiences ofparents, grandparents, great-grand-parents, etc., who would have at-tended the Hus Memorial School dur-ing its years in Temple.

With fond and grateful memories, composed and respectfully presentedby:

tions for an afternoon of fun andfellowship. After volleyball and groupactivities, Mrs. Hegar and her assis-tant served sandwiches, cookies, andglasses of “Leon Punch” (tap water)or lemonade in the dining room. Rev.Hegar then gathered everyone in theclassroom for a slideshow of Czecho-slovakia accompanied by interestingtales. Finally a few hymns were sung, always closing with “Hoj verni v boj”before dismissing. Some of the stu-dents went home for the weekend andreturned Monday morning. Fridayevenings were always anticipatedeagerly, for lasting lifetime friend-ships were formed – some even lead-ing to marriage!

Rev. Hegar spent 33 years as theHus School principal and teacher, during which time he pastored theTemple Brethren Church, edited TheBrethren Journal, wrote “In Memo-riam” articles in The Brethren Jour-nal as a tribute to prominent or influ-ential deceased members of the Unity, and, during World War II, publishedletters of interest in The BrethrenJournal from many service men andwomen. Rev. Hegar loved music;pounding on the piano until eachseparate voice was perfect, he hadthe class singing as an accomplishedchoir in a very few weeks. He spent

much time translating songs fromGerman and English to Czech, draw-ing the bars, entering the notes, andwriting or printing the words beneath.Using a crude box-type letter-sizedink pad and a roller, he printed onecopy at a time. This writer has numer-ous original copies of the musicaltranslations he produced. “Hoj verniv boj” was one of his most belovedtranslations, as was “Se nestidim” (IAm Not Ashamed), a beautiful malequartet or chorus presentation.

Rev. Hegar baptized many infantsand married many young couples inhis office. He taught Bible classes atTemple High School and traveled manymiles by request to perform variousfunctions, baptisms, weddings, fu-nerals, etc. Although he was ham-pered by a weak voice, he neverrefused to respond to any requestsfor his services, anytime, anywhere. He taught his classes in Czech with asprinkling of English. During all ofthese years as a teacher, Rev. Hegarwould admonish and inspire his stu-dents with a charge: “If ever facedwith a task or obvious need, neverhesitate, but GET UP AND DO ITimmediately!” There is concrete evi-dence in every congregation of theUnity that these Hus Memorial Schoolex-students have honored the charge

I hope you don’t mind, but we are going to take a short departure fromthe Sunday School Songs to delve into something even more important. As summer turns to fall, the children and youth of our churches willreturn to school. They will learn much, grow much, and also face manychallenges. Let’s commit ourselves to praying for all the children of ourschools as they begin the 2014-2015 school year. This month’s sectionis dedicated 31 verses for our children, youth, teachers, coaches, staff, and administrators. Join me in praying for a year of joy, growth, andfulfillment.

Call to me and I will show you great and mighty things.Jeremiah 22:2

40/July-August 2014 BRETHREN JOURNAL

Needed: FRIENDS OF THE BRETHREN JOURNAL– from the editor

The Brethren Journal has been publishing life and activitiesof the Unity of the Brethren in Texas for over 100 years. All of theseinclude records of weddings, baptisms, deaths, etc., of the minis-ters... when they were submitted. These records are invaluable forfamilies who wish to research their family history or activities thathave taken place in our congregations and the denomination. Itwould be fitting, in the eyes of the Brethren Journal BusinessCommittee, to ask for financial support for the continuation of thispublication.

If you wish to become a special FRIEND OF THE BRETHRENJOURNAL, please send your donation to the Business Manager(address inside front cover). These donations are tax deductible.
