the idea behind the design of the memoria l pavi l ion was fami ly ; whether i t i s Brett ’s parents leigha and tom, his f r iends f rom school , or h is basebal l fami ly. this space is a place for ever yone to gather and be together, that i s why in the inter ior of the pavi l ion is a large concrete table and bench where Brett ’s d i f ferent fami l ies can jo in together for meals . the concrete wal ls surrounding the space keeps the focus upon what is happening within , yet on the wood s lats there are v iewing areas for basebal l spec tators to watch the games. the 2x4 wood s lat wal ls of fer spat ia l def in i t ion and protec t ion f rom foul bal ls , which are prone to this area . on the opposite s ide of the pavi l ion to contrast the more enclosed concrete fami ly s ide, there is an open area where basebal l fans are able to hang out and pul l up a lawn chair to watch the di f ferent games. this open space is ver y versat i le and able to have team meet ings, par t ies, or just about any smal l event .

redefining the image of a pavi l ion. i nterplay bet ween mater ia ls : concrete and wood struc ture evokes a sense of st rength and stabi l i t y whi le the canvas overhangs f loat on the breeze to give the space an a i r y, l ight feel . openness a l lows spec tators and players v iews to the f ie lds on e i ther s ide. to memoria l ize Brett , g lass panels hang a long the s idewalks narrat ing stor ies of h is l i fe, as wel l as h is image, and poss ibly f raming one of h is basebal l jerseys.

the concept of th is des ign is powered by the idea that someone can be sheltered f rom uncomfor table par ts of nature whi le st i l l feel ing completely in the open. this was achieved by creat ing the l ightest poss ible struc ture, tensi le fabr ic . the mater ia l a l lows for gent le cur ves and over lapping sa i ls that create a dynamic play of l ight and shadows, whi le block ing the uncomfor table southern l ight .

as a contrast to the ex tremely l ight roof struc ture, the ground plane is dominated by mass ive e lements. these e lements can be used as seat ing as wel l as a table sur face, depending on the needs of whoever is occupying the space. once enter ing the space, the seemingly chaot ic form of the roof struc ture is revealed to be quite ordered, and the objec ts on the ground fol low the lead of the hexagonal form of the roof struc ture.

located bet ween the Blue and Gold basebal l f ie lds at the CiCo Park Basebal l complex, the new Brett Bolton Memoria l Pavi l ion wi l l be construc ted dur ing the summer of 2012. the pavi l ion wi l l ser ve for the var ious purposes that happen s imultaneously with the summer basebal l season. as v is i tors walk down the s idewalk heading south f rom the hear t of the f ie lds, the guests wi l l be greeted by an e legant grey and dark blue fabr ic roof s l ight ly f loat ing on a summer breeze, creat ing a fa int , rhythmic puls ing noise as i t r i ses and fa l ls with the wind to inst i l l a sense of a i r y re laxat ion. the user wi l l then fol low the path and be greeted by a concrete and steel column reaching towards the sk y and ac t ing as the struc tural suppor t for the ent i re pavi l ion. on this column res ides Brett ’s name engraved on a plaque to show that the pavi l ion was bui l t in h is memor y. Under the canvas roof, that provides shelter dur ing dark weather, whi le a l lowing the roof to glow with any l ight , i s an e l l ipt ica l concrete s lab. Concrete benches c i rcumnavigate the ex ter ior of the space, creat ing var y ing levels of seat ing and even a counter space. When the user ar r ives at the back of the pavi l ion, they witness a large per forated metal screen with a basebal l g love and basebal l nest led ins ide, with sunl ight shining through to cast shadows on the pavi l ion f loor and counter top.

Basebal l : a fami ly spor t . . .

a player approaches home plate, p lac ing one foot in the batters box, gr inding his c leat into the dir t , s lowly fo l lowed by the other. Gr ipping the bat , he peers out f rom under his helmet to glare up at h is opponent on the mound. the pitcher tenses up, rocks back on one foot , ra ises his k nee, and ever ything goes s i lent . the adversar y drops his k nee to the ground as his arm comes up and over re leas ing the bal l . i t may be f ly ing at incredible speeds but as the batter looks on, i t only f loats in t ime with a sof t , a i r y sound as i t f l ies c loser to the plate. Within that moment the batter ’s conscious te l ls h im, “ i can do this .” the swing comes, h is shoulder drops, and the bat becomes weight less as he swings with a l l h is might . the bat and basebal l meet with an echoing crack as the bal l i s re jec ted f rom being caught by the catcher and is f lung into the outf ie ld. the bat fa l ls to the ground as the batter takes of f running towards f i rst base. the f i rst base coach, cheer ing and jumping waves the batter and gives him the s ignal to keep going to second. He rounds f i rst base in a c loud of dust and the thud that h is c leat makes against the base. Breathing heavi ly he glances over at the thi rd base coach who is waving him to keep going, keep pushing, keep running. another thud against second base this t ime, the runner speeds towards thi rd ; the coach a l l the whi le point ing towards home plate and waving him on st i l l .

By this t ime the outf ie lder retr ieved the bal l , threw to the cut of f man who was on his way to swinging around to throw to the catcher in hopes of gett ing the runner out . the throw fa l ls shor t leaving the catcher to move for ward away f rom the plate, mak ing a wide open lane for the runner. the runner is breathing hard, legs star t ing to shake, not f rom being out of shape; he’s t ra ined for this ; he’s merely shak ing f rom the adrenal ine cours ing through his veins. Keeping his eye on the base unt i l the ver y last minute, h is c leat stomps home plate with the f inal c loud of dust r is ing as the sound of the crowd r ises back to attent ion of the runner. He hears cheers f rom fr iends, parents, teammates, spec tators : he hears cheer ing f rom his fami ly. Basebal l i s a fami ly spor t . Suppor ted by fami ly, carr ied by f r iends, led by coaches the idea of fami ly exceeds the father, mother, daughter, son concept but encompasses ever yone. this sense of fami ly has even inspired Brett Bolton’s fami ly : coaches, teammates, f r iends, and the l ike to memoria l ize his memor y with this pavi l ion.

“nothing great was ever accompl ished without enthusiasm.”
