Principal’s Thoughts Bruce Nield
Acting Principal
Congratulations Congratulations to the Henson family on the arrival of Archie Roy, a son and brother for Melanie, Paul and Maya. Both are doing well. Staffing We welcome this week Mr Ben Miller who is joining us as our new Physical Education, Health and Personal Development teacher. Mr Miller is looking forward to accompanying our students on the Snow Trip in Week 4 and joins us from Richmond River High School in Lismore. Upcoming Excursions There are going to be lots of opportunities for our students to get out and about over the next term including Work Experience for Year 10, Work Placements for Hospitality and Electrotechnology, the Fairfax Festival at the end of the Term, SRC Camp for the student executive, the Canberra excursion for Primary students and the Year 5 and 6 Debating Gala Day in
Deniliquin next week. It’s inspiring to see how our students engage these rich learning experiences outside the classroom as part of expanding their skills and building their confidence in the wider world. Students not going are expected to attend school. Transition, Electives, Parent Teacher Night The school’s transition program for students from Years 6 to 7 continues this term, with the next transition day being on the 26th of August for our 2015 Year 7 students. The Department of Education and Communities is changing its enrolment forms for students enrolling in 2015 and parents will be provided with these in a new enrolment pack once the changes take effect. A reminder as well that Stage 6 2015 elective forms are due on the 1st of August. With Parent Teacher Interviews on the 30th of July, this is a great opportunity to talk to your child’s teachers about their interest and potential in a range of subjects. A Stage 5 electives meeting with be held towards the end of the Term.

Flu season is here! Influenza is spread from person-to-person through the coughing or sneezing of infected people. Remind your child about these good hygiene practices to minimise the spread of infection:
Anyone who is sick with influenza symptoms should stay home until their symptoms are gone.
Cover the nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. Throw the tissue in the garbage bin after use.
Wash hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
Avoid touching eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
If you or your child develops influenza-like illness, seek the advice of your family doctor as you would with any other illness. The seasonal influenza vaccine, which protects against the pandemic influenza strain as well as two other influenza strains, is now available free to eligible people. More information about the vaccine is available from the NSW Health Immunisation Unit's vaccination page. Previous vaccination with the pandemic influenza vaccine, Panvax® is not a barrier to also receiving the seasonal influenza vaccine.

Uniform It is now very cold and students are required to wear their full school uniforms, which includes their school jumpers. If your child does not have a school jumper please arrange to get them one, either from the school or from one of the shops in Swan Hill. A list of things to bring has been sent home this week as well as the medical forms required for the excursion. Please return the medical forms as soon as possible and finalise any outstanding payments. Parent Teacher Interviews Just a reminder that Parent Teacher Interviews have been arranged for Wednesday 30th June. Please follow the instructions in the bridge to book your time slots. If you are not available on this date and you would still like to speak to your childs teacher please call the school to arrange an alternative time.

GEM This year in secondary we have added another layer to our student monitoring. 1 Poor effort & behaviour, non submission of tasks
1-5 Monitoring in all classes, reporting to Ms Wait daily Not allowed to attend excursion and extra curricula activities
Keep brains ticking over If your child is working on a personal project or a school assignment, don’t forget www.SchoolAtoZ.com.au has lots of information and fact sheets to help with home learning. For students polishing their spelling skills, the free Spelling Bee mobile app also allows them to record a list of their own words and then test themselves. You might even want to challenge them with a list you create. Here’s where you’ll find the free app to download: http://bit.ly/Q9ez0G
