THE BRIDGE

As documented in this issue of the Bridge, last June we said goodbye and good luck to another class of Severn graduates – the class of 2011. For some high school seniors, graduation signals an end, but as is implied by the word commencement, to Severn graduates it signifi es a beginning β€” an opportunity to assume the responsibilities of their generation. As they embark on this im-

portant journey, I am confi dent their years spent at Severn provide a solid platform from which to make smart decisions and the tools and wherewithal to do so.

A well educated population is crucially important if the United States is to succeed in an increasingly competitive global environ-ment, and this generation will be asked to address some of the most important social, political, and scientifi c questions of our time. It will require creativity, the capacity to see multiple possibilities, and then the ability to choose wisely and formulate novel solutions to these complex problems. At our opening assembly this August, my remarks to the collective student body centered on the importance of seeing possibilities in situations and choosing well. Th e follow-ing are excerpts:

from the headmaster

Our mission asks you β€˜to marshal the courage to lead.’ This is not physical courage, the kind you might muster to take on an athletic opponent. It is another kind of courageβ€”moral courage, the cour-age to stand up for what you believe in even when, especially when, it is not popular. Leadership demands you to think for yourself and act on your convictions; good leaders have an intellectual curiosity; they think widely, constantly seeking connections that others might miss; they possess a willingness to change and grow. Leaders have vision. They think of and identify meaningful choices in situations when others feel powerless. Leaders make choices today to achieve their vision, to make a better tomorrow.

As you can see, at least in my opinion, being a leader means far more than being accomplished or being successful. In fact many accomplished people are not good leaders at all. Don’t get me wrong, many are, but being successful does not necessarily make you a good leader. For example, in making the headmaster’s list, are you a good leader? Maybe, maybe not. You may be a terrifi c basketball player but that doesn’t mean you are a good leader. A great lawyer, a great teacher, none of these necessarily make you a great leader. Leadership is not about your accomplishments: it’s about creating a better tomorrow by making informed choices today. Eff ective leaders have sharp vision, can see multiple pos-sibilities when others see few, and then formulate and choose a new direction for the better.

The essence of good leadership is simpleβ€”not easy, but simple. Make smart choices that improve you and your surroundings. Choosing is about creating a life, a life of value. Every day, every hour, every minute, you make choices and, in turn, you are made by those choices.

The ability to choose well is arguably the most infl uential tool for controlling your future. Choice lets us get from who we are today to who we want to become in the future. The impact choice has on your potential, your future, cannot be overstated.

Choice is imbedded in every aspect of your life, in every question you may faceβ€”questions as simple as β€˜what should I have for break-fast’ or as complex as β€˜should I report a fellow student for cheat-ing on a test?’ In her book, The Art of Choosing, Dr. Sheena Iyen-gar a professor at Columbia University states, β€˜We are faced daily with our own imperatives to choose. Should we act or hang back and observe? Calmly accept whatever comes our way, or doggedly pursue the goals we have set for ourselves? We measure our lives using diff erent markers: years, major events, achievements. We can also measure them by the choices we make, the sum total of which has brought us to wherever and whoever we are today . . .. When we view life through this lens, it becomes clear that choice is an enormously powerful force, an essential determinant of how one leads a life.’

Th e rapidly changing world in which Severn graduates and current students will live, work, raise families, and be called upon to lead is full of promise and uncertainty. I have no worries, though, that our new graduates will fl ourish in this world. For nearly a cen-tury, a Severn education has established a foundation from which to lead by instilling the ability to identify possibilities when others see few and by making smart choices to improve both themselves and the communities in which they live. As always, if there are any thoughts you would like to share with me, please email [email protected].

FALL 2011

We all remember Trumbull’s famous oil painting where our founding fathers sit down in the summer of 1776 to write our Declaration of Independence. Th ey are of various ages, professions, and interests and they share a common goal. Th ey’ve come together in Philadelphia for what would soon be our country. And they have the task of the millennium: craft a document to declare America’s independence and create a new nation. But how do they do it? How do these men usually characterized as farmers, as the everyday men’s men of the colonial era, manage to create a document that has lasted 235 years? And could we possibly do the same today?

Th e answer? Scholarship.

Th ere are fi ve men assigned to the writing of the declaration; we all know them: John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Th omas Jeff erson, Robert Livingston, and Roger Sherman. And who do they choose to be the head of the committee? Th e youngest. Th omas Jeff erson at only 33 years of age. Why?

John Adams described Jeff erson as having a β€œreputation for literature, science, and a happy talent of composition.” Originally, Jeff erson asked Adams to make the draft of the declaration. Adams refused, believing that the young man who had so β€œseized upon his heart” was better fi t for the job. Jeff erson reluctantly accepted the position. He was on a time crunch. Remember, he had no computer, no internet, and no library at his fi ngertips that warm summer of 1776. He had only his own bank of knowledge. So he sat down, shut in his hotel room by the glimmering light of his oil lamp, and went to put quill to parchment. But what would he write? He pulled his quill back to think. He was a well read man. So he would draw on what he knew.

Th omas Jeff erson himself said that he drew his ideas from β€œthe harmonizing sentiments of the day, whether expressed in letters, printed essays, or in the elementary books of public right, as Aristotle, Cicero, Locke, Sidney.” And so, a few nights, and many drafts later, the Declaration of Independence was born. Jeff erson was able to express Locke’s natural rights of man that our country was founded upon because he was well read. He spoke broadly. He knew that in order for the declaration to last, it couldn’t be bogged down by

specifi cs. He did not speak of small issues, but rather gave what was absolutely necessary: the principles. Th is man was not simply a farmer picking up his pitchfork to start a revolution. He and his colleagues were bright, intelligent men, ready to make a necessary change. Th ey knew that what they were doing was justifi ed because they had philosophical evidence behind them. Th ey had read; they had conversed, and they had thought. Th ese men were everyday scholars.

Now let us spring forward 235 years to today and let me ask, how many of us are everyday scholars?

If we ask our modern students if they know who Cicero is–would we be surprised if they answered, β€œOh yeah, he was that guy who got eliminated on survivor last week, right?” Or if we ask them to explain the works of Sidney, β€œWhat? You mean that place in Australia?” How many of us truly understand the principles of Locke? And besides that, who are the great minds that we should have in our banks of knowledge? How many of us could easily reference the philosophies of Ghandi, Churchill, or Nelson Mandella?

What if we were called upon to create a document that would make a new nation? Could we call upon our banks of knowledge–sequestered in a hotel room–and craft a document to last 235 years in less than a week? Even with computers, internet, and libraries at our fi ngertips–could we understand and apply the principles of our great thinkers–on a time crunch? Our founding fathers knew that scholarship could reward them infi nitely.

But today those immortal concepts of Th omas Jeff erson–Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness–have been degraded into several pop-culture referencesβ€”β€œLife,” the popular board game; β€œLiberty,” the Jeep teen dream car; and β€œTh e Pursuit of Happiness,” the Will Smith movie.

As American citizens it is our duty to foster that innate curiosity–that need for everyday scholarship of our founding fathers. As we enter the 21st century, let us pay homage to our founding fathers, those everyday scholars, as we continue our own quest for life and liberty through the pursuit of scholarship.

In Pursuit of Scholarshipβ€”Emily Price ’11

Th e Severn Oratorical Society, coached by Dr. Jackie Baugh, continues to wow the

Severn community with articulate, poised and confi dent student speakers. A standout of last year is Emily Price ’11, the Maryland State Winner and national fi nalist in the Sons of the American

Revolution’s Joseph S. Rumbaugh Historical Oration Contest. Through elimination rounds, Emily reached the fi nals

as one of the top six speakers in the United States. This annual contest challenges students to write an original oration

on the topic of an event, personality, or document which pertains to the Revolutionary War and to show

the relationship it bears to America today. We proudly share Emily’s winning speech with our Bridge readers.

FROM THE 1975 NAVIGATOR:

Woody feels that coffee makes a good teacher. If he were β€œhead man” he said he would like to make the coffee stronger. Mr. Johnston has been at Severn for β€œthree fun years” (as he says),β€œbut time sure fl ies when you’re having fun.” He is still waiting for a memorable teaching experience. Hillsadale College, Akron University and Loyola College have all seen Mr. Johnston over the years. Mr. Johnston has β€œinside” and β€œoutside” interests. He is advisor to the Chess Club, Prom Committee and the Junior Class. Mr. Johnston was also the assistant soccer coach. He teaches 7th grade English, Modern World Literature, Great Books and Comp. II. When asked if he held any positions, Mr. Johnston gravely replied that he once held a yoga position for 30 minutes.

FALL 2011

This year, Norwood Johnston II, Director of College Counseling, will celebrate 40 years as a dedicated Severn staffer. How on earth does he stay fresh?

He will tell you he has the best job at Severn, and perhaps he does. Sitting in his organized and comfortable offi ce, Woody Johnston shows no signs of β€˜back to school’ stress, no apprehension over the next round of college applicants

that will sit nervously before him, and frankly, perfectly positive and at ease in his position as director of College Counseling and with his many years at Severn. β€œIt’s a constantly changing environment,” says Woody. β€œI meet new kids every year, new families. I don’t have the workload and the grading concerns that our faculty has but I know every student, every parent, and I still interact with them all at diff erent levels.” Nice work if you can get it.

Woody knows the demands of teachingβ€”he fi rst came to Severn in 1972 as an English teacher, teaching 5 sections of English, coaching JV Soccer and serving as advisor to the Chess Club. Woody was appointed head of the English Department in 1976 by Headmaster Jim Donnelly. A year later, he was asked to be the Director of College Counseling, holding both positions and continuing to teach two sections of Honors American Literature until 1988 when Headmaster Edson Sheppard asked him to assume the role of full-time director of college counseling, a position he holds to this day. Woody continued to teach American Literature, Shakespeare, and up until two years ago, an elective, Detective Fiction. Woody says, β€œNot being in the classroom last year and this has meant that I have missed opportunities to engage students in an activity that I love, reading and responding to great literature.”

Woody does not believe that students have changed that much over the years taking into account diff erent habits, diff erent dress, and a technological revolution. But he does believe that their focus has changed. β€œStudents are defi nitely more self-motivated,” he says. β€œTh ey focus on their priorities better and are actually more spirited.” He believes that the whole college application process has accelerated. β€œMore students are applying than ever before, often to the same group of universities,” says Woody. β€œMore of the applicants are women than men, many are international, and

most submit multiple applications, making the selection process increasingly selective.” And have parents changed? β€œWell, parents today do hover, and some will mash their teeth over this but I fi nd that it is worse when parents can’t be involved. When I work with a student whose parent is not available to sit with us for whatever reason, I fi nd I miss the hovering.”

Woody has certainly experienced the physical transformation of the Severn campus. β€œSevern has evolved and allowed the people to go along with it,” he says. He feels that when the School went co-ed, along with the designation of Middle and Upper Schools, Severn began to attract a higher caliber student. As facilities and programs improved, specifi cally over the last 10 years, opportunities for faculty grew as well and that too served to attract better and more diverse students. When pressed to comment about areas of possible improvement, Woody could only think of one such areaβ€”the archives and its importance and relevance to our identity. β€œWe need to seize who we were and make it who we are,” he says. β€œβ€˜Private schools take the literal meaning of β€˜independent’ quite seriously. Severn celebrates its β€˜independence’ by separating itself from others, by declaring our distinction, by defi ning our mission uniquely.”

Severn currently has two full-time college counselors and Woody is extremely thankful to have Sarah Markhovsky, Associate Direc-tor of College Counseling, as his partner for the last fi ve years.Woody has much to be proud of, certainly not the least of which are the thousands of grateful students he has guided and sent off to begin successful college careers. β€œDo you realize that our student to college counselor ratio is 1 to 50,” he asks, β€œthat public school college counselors see hundreds of students while they also serve as academic counselors, psychological counselors, and class deans? I feel like an ambassador of the School,” he continues. β€œI have the opportunity to travel to conferences and represent Severn to hundreds of colleges and universities across the country. I am con-stantly enriched and restored by the interchange of ideas among students, parents, and my colleagues,” β€”as we are enriched, Woody, by your commitment to Severn School.

BOYS LACROSSECoach Brian Wood Th e 2011 Boys Varsity Lacrosse team im-proved as a team and as a program with a fi nal record of 10 wins and 12 losses. We started the season off with wins over Bullis and Western Reserve, two teams we lost to last year and, on our spring break trip, we beat Cape Henry and St. Anne’s-Belfi eld in very exciting night games in Charlottesville. We traveled to Baltimore and beat Friends. After losing three straight games, we re-bounded with our best win all year by beat-ing Loyola 7-5 at home. In Anne Arundel county, we had our best year ever by snap-ping a three season losing streak and beating Spalding 7-3. We played in the Severna Park tournament and beat Annapolis 9-2 and had an exciting come from behind victory over Severna Park 8-7. Although we lost to St. Mary’s, our student athletes played with a lot of heart and passion in the 8-6 defeat. We lost 12 games this year but 9 of those losses came from teams ranked in the top 6 in the state. Our Ted White MVP award was given to Cole Bailey ’11 for his leadership and pro-duction (75 points, 31 goals and 44 assists). Th ese are truly outstanding numbers consid-ering the talent that Cole had to play against each game. Th e Player’s award was given to two players, Kevin Bolger ’11 and Adam Blaszczak ’11, both goalies. Th ese young men have been competing against each other since their freshmen year and shared the goal tending responsibilities. Our Hardest Shot contest was won by Mark Cohen ’12 at 89 MPH. Mark is now tied for 4th place on the Severn School All Time Hardest Shot List.

GIRLS LACROSSECoach Renie Sotiropoulos

Th e 2011 Girls Varsity Lacrosse team ended the season with an 11-9 record. Led by eight seniors, this year’s team was a mixture of sea-soned veterans and promising new talent. It was good to see the squad come together under the leadership of captains Caroline Code ’11 and Rachael Nock ’11. Th e team put together some great wins against ranked opponents including St Pauls, Severna Park,

and Broadneck. Th e team made period ap-pearances in the Baltimore Sun Top 15 and was ranked either 1 or 2 in Anne Arundel County by the Annapolis Capital through the season. Th e Ted White MVP Award went to Beanie Antonini ’11 and the Player’s Award went to Rachael Nock. We will miss the se-niors who can be proud of the way they rep-resented the program and the school over the last four years but they have left the program in the capable hands of new captains Alexa Kunowsky ’12 and Kelly Reese ’13 as well as returning and new varsity players.

TRACK AND FIELDCoach Richard Zmuda

Th e Severn Track and Field team had an out-standing 2011 Spring season. Some of the highlights for the girls included a new school record in the 4 x 400 and multiple runners qualifying for the A Conference Champion-ships, including: Grace Weaver ’12 (400, long jump), Delia Repasky ’13 (300 hur-dles), Lana Humes ’14 (400), Teisha Miles ’12 (shot put), and the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relay teams. At the end of the season, De-lia Repasky received the Coach’s Award and Grace Weaver received the Player’s Award. For the boys, Adam Boldt ’13 and Chris Byrns ’12 both broke 5 minutes in the mile. Also, the boys 4 x 800 relay team won the B Conference and qualifi ed for the A Con-ference Championships. Eamonn Vain-Cal-lahan ’12 received the Coach’s Award and Kevin Priddy ’11 won the Player’s Award.

BASEBALLCoach Hal Sparks

Th e Severn Baseball team fi nished the season with the best record (18-2) in the B Division.  Th e team received a fi rst round bye in the playoff s after winning the Red Division Con-ference.  Th e fi rst game in the playoff s was vs. Mount Carmel (eventual division cham-pion) and the only conference  team to de-feat the Admirals during the regular season.  Severn lost to Mount Carmel in extra innings and pitching let the team down in the next playoff game, ousting us from the playoff s.  Severn ended the season with a 18-4 record, after ranking as high as 9th in the Baltimore

This August, Severn introduced its new athletic logo. β€œMindful of our heritage, we have included a burgee representing our ties to the Severn River and the fi ve stars symbolizing the 5 star Admirals in the Navy,” noted Severn Athletic Director Julian Domenech β€˜84. Along with the introduction of the new logo comes the launch of a new athletics product website where clothing and spirit items will be available at various times throughout the school year. UP AND COMING ALUMNI ATHLETES

Congratulations to the following student-athletes of the Class of 2011 who committed to play a sport at a college or university this fall.

Sun poll of all high schools in the Metro area.Several players had  excellent seasons with pitcher Joe Kotler ’12 winning 10 games in a row with a 1.73 era. Joe struck out 96 and walked 16, pitching 66 innings.  Keenan Schlegel ’13 and Sam Wachs ’11 had  re-cords pitching for the Admirals. Wachs end-ed with a 3-1 record and Schlegel fi nished 5-2.  Leading hitters were Jake Ashworth ’11 at .492, Ryan Boulier ’11 at .482, Sam Meisenberg ’11 at .414, Ben Stringfel-low ’11 at .413 and Nick Stringfellow  ’11 at .409.  Th e Admirals played  good defense only committing 42 errors.  Team speed was outstanding with 89 stolen bases, Jake Ash-worth leading with 25  stolen bases.  Ryan Boulier led the team with 13 sacrifi ces.Th e future looks bright for the Admirals base-ball program, returning Kotler, Lantz  and Schlegel on the mound and underclassman Dave  Jaklistch ’14, Jack Treanor ’13 and Zach Domenech ’14 to help in 2012.  Th e motto of the team, β€œIf you can’t bunt, you can’t play and if you can’t throw strikes, you can’t pitch,” is what the team strives to achieve.

BOYS TENNISCoach Cathy Offi cer

Th e Varsity Boys Tennis program continued to make strides in the MIAA A Conference fi nishing with fi ve conference wins over Boy’s Latin, Calvert Hall, John Carroll, Park and Friends. Th ey tied with two other teams, St. Pauls and Park School, for sixth place in the 12 team conference. Highlights includ-ed beating Calvert Hall, Park and Friends for the fi rst time since entering the elite A league. Despite the lack of home courts ,

the team rallied to play all over the county and travel more than normal to complete this successful season. Th e team was led by Co-Captain Mike Alden ’11 who faced the toughest competition at one singles. Th e best overall record went to the other co-cap-tain Jai Lakhanpal ’12 who fi nished with an impressive 7-5 league record at three singles.Th is year’s Player’s Award went to Mike Al-den whose dedication to the sport of tennis and leadership on and off the court gained the respect of the other players. He will be truly missed next year. Th e Coach’s Award goes to a player that only missed practice one time and was a four year varsity starter, Ben-nett Heussler ’11, another senior who will be missed.

GOLFCoach Ben Pellicani

Th e Severn Golf team had a comeback 2011 spring season. After missing the playoff s the previous two years, the golf team had to win the last match of the season on the road against Curley to make the playoff s.  Lead by senior captain and All-Conference selection, Sarah Brown ’11 the Admiral Golf team was able to pull out victory 11 Β½ to 10 Β½ to se-cure a playoff spot.  A strong nucleus of play-ers return from the 2011 team and look to make another push to the playoff s in 2012.

SAILINGCoach Anne Megargel

Th e Severn Sailing team had a great year and ended the 2010-11 campaign with an excel-lent 4th place fi nish at the Fleet Racing Mal-lory Championships, only losing to two San Diego teams and a team from the US Virgin Islands. Th e team continued to make signifi -cant strides in terms of team racing as well. While not qualifying for Team Race Nation-als Baker Trophy, which was a bit of a dis-appointment, we put forth a strong eff ort at the Mid-Atlantic Championships even while missing some critical seniors at the event. We are hopeful that the experience gained by Patrick Floyd ’13 and Maeve White ’13, our sophomore skippers at that regatta, will serve us well as we move into developing our team race knowledge and skills. Our outgo-ing senior class (many sailing in colleges and

universities that include Dartmouth, Brown, Boston College, Bowdoin, Middlebury and Boston University) was not only successful on the water but they were excellent mentors for the group following them. Th eir abilities were superb and sure to show at the next level of sailing. Th e Coach’s Award went to Scott Houck ’11 and the Player’s Award went to Terry Duncan ’11.

Following a sidelining injury that prevented Kendall from competing for most of the winter season, she continued to train hard within her ability, kept the success of the team in mind as a guiding factor in her rehabilitation and thrived through the late season to a varsity record and fourth-place Ivy fi nish in the 100 fl y and fourth place Ivy fi nish in the 200 fl y.

Carlton Mulcahy Rogers died on July 2, 2011. Upon gradu-ation from Severn, Carlton returned to Los Angeles and spent the next 2 years at Po-mona College, where he joined the R.O.T.C. program. He transferred to the University of Southern California, where he graduated in 1938 with a BA in business. In 1940, he graduated from Southwestern Law School and then served as a special agent in the FBI prior to WWII. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in May 1942, as a Second Lieutenant. He served in the South Pacifi c theater as a 1st Lieutenant with the 362nd Engineers, operating a lumber mill on Guadalcanal. He was then reassigned to the European theater, now as a Captain, and served with General Patton’s 15th Army, building bridges to cross the Rhine River. He was awarded the Bronze Star. Upon returning home, he headed to Phoenix, Arizona, where he started the Union Gypsum Co., manufactures of wall board and other building materials. With his father’s passing in 1952, Carlton took over as president of Pacifi c Rock & Gravel Co., with mining operations in Irwindale, Upland and Corona, CA.

1935

Brigadier General James How-ard Keller passed away on Feb-ruary 13. After graduation from Severn, Jim entered the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and graduated in 1939. He was captain of the lacrosse teams in both 1936 and 1939. In 1941 he was assigned to the 32nd infan-try regiment of the 7th Division

with which he served in the Pa-cifi c area throughout World War II. He participated in the cam-paigns of Attu, Kwajalien, the Philippines, Okinawa and fi nally the surrender of Japanese forces in South Korea. He commanded the 32nd infantry regiment at the end of the war. In 1945 he was assigned to the faculty at West Point. During his military ca-reer he was awarded the combat infantryman’s badge, the distin-guished service medal, two silver star medals, three Legion of Mer-it medals, four bronze star med-als and the Army commendation medal. He retired from the Army in 1969 and was employed by the McDonnell-Douglas Cor-poration in St. Louis until 1976. After 30 years of military service and eight years with McDonnell-Douglas, General Keller retired. He served terms as president of Sea Pines Golf Club, Inc., Sea Pines Country Club and Chair-man of the Board of Trustees of Th e Seabrook.

1937

John Randolph β€œRandy” Cou-pland, III passed away on Au-gust 11, 2011. After graduating from Severn, Randy went on to the University of Virginia. He had a love of sports, especially baseball. He was the fi rst pitcher to have his name engraved in the Norfolk, VA β€œNo Hit, No Run” Hall of Fame Book in 1931 and later was inducted into Severn Athletic Hall of Fame. At the University of Virginia, Randy always joked that he was drafted twiceβ€”once by the Yankees, and once by Uncle Sam calling him to service shortly after. He claims his most memorable time in his brief baseball career was

the opportunity to pitch to Joe DiMaggio. Unfortunately, the fi rst pitch was hit over center fi eld and a smiling DiMaggio said, β€œWelcome to the majors kid,” as he rounded the bases. From ’35-’39 he served in the Naval Reserve and was drafted and commissioned in 1942 into the US Army. He served with the French Army in northern Africa and as a Captain in the US Army 3rd Infantry Division in the Eu-ropean theater. Randy was dis-charged in 1946 and recalled in 1951 for the Korean confl ict. He served as an advisor with the Ko-rean Army and was discharged a second time in December 1952.

1938

Richard β€œDick” Lazenby died from pneumonia July 30. While at Severn, Dick received the honor of All Maryland Lacrosse before moving on to the Univer-sity of Virginia, participating in the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity and three sports - soccer, swimming and lacrosse. Dick then attended the US Naval Academy, Class of 1943. He achieved All Mary-land and All American honor-able mention in lacrosse and was the Naval Academy’s repre-sentative to the second North/South All Star lacrosse game in 1941, where he scored the win-ning goal for the south team. Following graduation he was as-signed to a destroyer operating in the North Atlantic, then shifted down to the invasion of North Africa and landing at Sicily. Th is was followed by an assignment to another destroyer serving the Pacifi c and which took part in the landing at Saipan. Dur-ing the summer of 1944 he was ordered back to the states and served on fi ve diff erent aircraft

carriers. He became command-ing offi cer of VA 94 (fi ghter squadron) and was executive of-fi cer of the carrier USS Franklin D. Roosevelt during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He also had two tours in the Pentagon both in public aff airsβ€”the fi rst in the Navy Department, the second in the Department of Defense as head of the Naval Security Review, where his performance earned him the Meritorious Service Metal. On retiring from the Navy, Dick entered the real estate business in Annapolis and served many years on the Anne Arundel County Board of Real-tors. n Albert β€œBuzz” Betzel, Capt. USN (Ret.) passed away on   May 19. After graduation from Severn, Buzz attended the Naval Academy Class of 1942, where he specialized in electri-cal engineering. In December ’41, his class was accelerated into service, and he fought as a submarine commander in the Pacifi c for which he was awarded the Silver Star. After 30 years in the Navy, he joined the National Science Foundation’s polar re-search department, and served as manager of the Palmer Station in Antarctica during the 1980s.

Lt. Col. Robert β€œBob” Th orn-ton Strange Jr. died May 30. While attending Severn, Bob played football, wrestling, and lacrosse with good friends Buzz Hall and Casey Hernandez, and became an outstanding athlete. Upon graduation from Severn, Bob matriculated to the Uni-versity of Maryland, leaving the university to enter the Merchant Marine Academy in Louisiana during the Korean confl ict. In January of 1950, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. Af-ter graduation from the Air Force Aviation Cadet program, he was commissioned as a second lieu-tenant and sent to South Korea, where he spent the duration of the war fl ying Night Intruder raids over North Korea with the Th ird Light Bomb Wing. Dur-ing this time, he earned several medals and commendations for bravery and service including the Distinguished Flying Cross.

β€œWhat could be considered my original near miss was that I was born at all.” So begins Near Misses: A Naval Aviator’s Story, by Paul Allen Riley, who has written the detailed true story of his close brushes with death as a fi ghter pilot at the dawn of the jet age. For any reader with experience as a pilot, or really any aviation buff , Near Misses is a must-read, and is a clear thumbs-up.

Th e writing is clear and concise, if sprinkled a bit too liberally with the use of aviation terms for those of us whose fl ying decisions are limited to whether to purchase the headphones for the in-fl ight movie. Th e jargon does not obscure the story, though, but rather is a necessary component of a book that is, at its heart, about adventures in fl ying. One cannot write a legal thriller without using phrases like β€œverdict” and β€œpresumed innocent,” and I suppose one cannot write a book about fl ying without shifting one’s gaze to one’s β€œgyro horizon instrument.” In any event, the level of detail of the author’s recollection of particular fl ights that occurred in the 1950s, now over a half-century ago, is no less than astounding, and must be the result of a fl ight log religiously maintained, combined with a sharp memory for detail.

In sum, Near Misses should be a textbook for all Student Naval Aviators, a fi reside companion to retired military aviators now freed to muse on the good fortune of their own survival, and a reminder to the rest of us of the serious risks a few take on behalf of the security and liberty of all.

Near Misses caused this reader to refl ect that, when we consider our own β€œnear misses” in life, we must begin to realize, as the author seems to conclude, that whatever setbacks we have been through, mere survival to any ripe age is, after all, a miracle of sorts, even for those of us who have never lit the afterburners of our experimental jet aircraft, or been catapulted off the narrow deck of a surging aircraft carrier in high winds and rolling seas to have β€œslipped the surly bonds of earth and danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings.”

From John Norton: John Leo-cha and I are organizing our 40th reunion, which will take place during the 2012 Alumni Weekend scheduled for May 11, 12, and 13. John and I ar-gue about politics from time to time, but we are agreed that we’d like to make this a big event. Severn will be hosting our re-union dinner at the school on

Saturday, May 12. We will be contacting you soon with more details. Please don’t hesitate to let us know now if you are plan-ning to attend, or if you’d like to help. And if you have any ideas that will make it a more attrac-tive, memorable event, we’d like to hear those ideas now, too. As an inducement to you, John and I are asking Th e SCOOTER Store to donate a Jazzy 1170 XL Plus Power Chair, with 16” knobby drive wheels, as a door prize. You can reach John Leo-cha by email at [email protected], or by calling him at 443-454-3696. You can reach me by email at [email protected], or by calling me at 410-924-8642. Please don’t argue with us! As most of you know, my brother, Harold Norton ’74, passed away in July. Denise Tray Rosson ’78 kindly helped me organize a me-morial gathering at Severn for his classmates and his Severna Park friends. Liz Mann Carlin ’74, Mark Fitzsimmons ’76, Steve Fromyer ’74, Steve Hill ’74, John Leocha ’72, Jeff Po-pham ’74, Ann ’76 and Geoff Riefe ’73, Steve Shenk ’74, Susan Snyder ’76, Jim Trost ’74, and Gary Zorn ’74 were among those who came to visit and remember Harold. We scat-tered some of Harold’s ashes at Severn. Joe Burke ’94 catered the gathering, and Ann and Geoff brought terrifi c chocolate mint brownies, Harold’s favorite fl avor combination. Many more of his classmates, teachers, and friends from Severn sent kind, thoughtful notes to my fam-ily. We are grateful, and I know Harold would have felt honored. Th ank you.”

Abigail, Katherine and Molly Morsberger, daughters of Melissa White Morsberger ’91

From Heather: β€œHi class of 1991! I heard that our 20th Re-union was a fantastic event and I was so sorry to have missed it. I was visiting Annapolis in August and got to catch up with Car-rie MacVean Grimes, Cheryl Helman Madden, and Melissa White Morsberger who all en-joyed seeing everyone and at-tending the alumni activities. A big shout out to Casey Cole who I heard made the trip from Colo-rado, and Alexi Dzurec coming from New Mexico! Impressive! A big thanks to Kristin Gil-lis Long and Carrie MacVean Grimes for their eff orts with this event. n Melissa White Mors-berger shares that she is doing well and is excited to announce the birth of their third child, Molly Elizabeth, born on Febru-ary 1, 2011. She weighed 8 lb. 5 oz. at birth and is showered with love by her two big sisters Abigail (10) and Katherine (8). Melissa and her husband, Steve, continue to live in Catonsville. Melissa is an elementary school nurse for Baltimore County Public Schools, and has been re-ally fortunate to be able to bring both of her older girls with her to school each day. She had a

great time visiting with other members of the Class of 1991 at the evening reunion but was very sorry to have missed the pic-nic. She and her family enjoyed spending a week in Ocean City this summer as well as an amaz-ing two weeks in the Adiron-dacks, which is their annual fam-ily vacation spot. She is looking forward to another great school year but isn’t excited to get back into the balancing act of work, family, and all of the craziness of having kids in activities during the school year! She wishes ev-eryone well and asks that more of you send updates on your lives. n So what a great surprise it was to be reading the July 2011 of Food and Wine magazine and see Andrew Dehart’s name in an article about hunting lionfi sh! I defi -nitely attribute many of my skill sets to my education at Severn. Severn prepared me not only for college, but for life: of course Severn taught me math, science, and library research techniques, but I also learned team work, patience, professionalism, self-confi dence, pride, and respect. I really believe that Severn laid the foundation for me to grow into a better person as I got through college. Severn’s teachers truly care about their students, and for that reason they really are the backbone of the school. rFROM THE ALUMNI OFFICE

It is with great appreciation that we say farewell to Woody Wooddell ’73 as our Alumni Associa-tion chairman. After two years of serving as chairman of the Alumni Board, the demands of his thriving dental education center and other professional endeavors made it necessary for him to pass the leadership baton. He will, however, remain on the board where he will continue to work on the alumni career networking program. β€œWoody has done a terrifi c job for the last two years guiding the alumni association to its current healthy state,” said Head-master Doug Lagarde. β€œWe appreciate all that he has done and will continue to do to support Severn.”

Stepping up as co-chairs for the Association will be Car-rie MacVean Grimes ’91 and Mark Carroll ’83. Carrie and Mark both expressed their ap-preciation for Wooddell’s lead-ership and are looking ahead for continued growth within the program. β€œWe look forward to working together to build an even stronger association to support the mission of the

school in whatever way we can,” said Carrie. β€œLet us know if you have any ideas or would like to be involved,” Mark added.

Woody said, β€œIt has been an honor and a privilege to be involved in the resurgence of the Alumni Association’s presence at Severn. From day one everyone on the Execu-tive Council has devoted themselves to the creation of our vision and putting it into action. He added, β€œIt is exciting to see the relationships being built between all ages of alumni and Severn. Th e strong leadership of Carrie and Mark will assure the continuance of the Alumni Associa-tion’s enrichment of the Severn School community.”

Annual Fund Endowment Capital Gifts

SEVERN SCHOOL ANNUAL REPORT 2010-2011

the A N N UA L F U N D

An absolute necessity in the life of the school, our Annual Fund supports current programs and students at Severn in the most immediate sense.

Whether it’s support for our Mock Trial team or an outing to the National Press Club for our budding journalists, the Annual Fund is here to assist.

Your support of the Annual Fund is part of a tradition of generous giving by loyal alumni, parents, parents of alumni, grandparents, friends, faculty

and staff . When you give to the Annual Fund, you join others in being stewards of an educational tradition that is distinctive. Unrestricted operat-

ing funds (the Annual Fund) close the gap between what tuition covers and what it actually costs to run the School.

We are proud of our community and the challenge to our students to pursue excellence in character, conduct and scholarship. Severn School

students have been empowered by our dedicated faculty with a lifelong curiosity for learning, and we call on our friends annually to help us

continue this signifi cant stewardship.

Every gift is important to Severn School, regardless of its size, and we ask everyone to join us in this collective eff ort.

Thank you for your generosity.

Severn has established a series of Annual Fund giving levels to acknowledge the generous support of our donors. Gifts of every size are sincerely appreciated.

GIFTS RECEIVED 7/1/10 - 6/30/11

CASH GIFTS Most gifts to Severn School are in the form of cash, the most convenient way of giving. Such gifts are tax-deductible and are vital to the support of Severn School’s annual, capital and endowment needs. Credit cards (Master Card, Visa and American Express) are accepted. Mail your contributions to: Severn School, Th e Boone House, 116 Maple Avenue, Severna Park, MD 21146. You may also call Holly Carroll at 410-647-7701 x 2259 or go to www.severnschool.com to make an online gift.

SECURITIES Gifts of appreciated stocks, bonds, and mutual funds are exempt from capi-tal gains taxes. If the securities have been owned for more than one year, a gift of these assets can provide the donor with a charitable income tax deduction for the fair market value of the security. Securities can be electronically transferred by your broker to Severn School’s brokerage account (see information below).

MAKING GIFTS OF STOCK Electronic transfer is the easiest method for stock transfer be-cause your gift is valued on the day you transfer it. Th e value of your gift is determined by the average of the high/low price of your stock on the day of transfer. Th e toll-free number for our account at Citigroup, Smith Barney is 1-800-638-9165. Our broker is J. Kirk Jay ’87. Our account # 58E-084491156Y and the β€˜DTC” transfer number is 0418. Please call Kirk Jay or Mary Salsich at 410-647-7701 x 2261 or e-mail [email protected] at Severn if you have any questions or to notify them if you transfer a gift. You can also send us unsigned stock certifi cates via certifi ed mail. However, the related stock power must be guaranteed by a bank offi cer or investment broker and be sent to Severn School in a separate envelope.

GIFTS IN MEMORY OR TO HONOR Each year Severn receives many gifts in memory of or to honor classmates, parents, teachers, students and friends. When memorial or honoring gifts are received, Severn notifi es the family. In some instances, special funds are established which may become capital or endowed funds.

LIFE INCOME GIFTS Gifts of appreciated property can generate income for you with positive tax benefi ts. One example is the formation of a charitable remainder trust. BEQUESTS Every member of the Severn School community should have an up-to-date will. We hope you will consider Severn School as one of your benefi ciaries. Some people specify an amount, some a percentage of their estate. All bequests are sincerely appreci-ated. If you let us know, you are then a member of the Severn School 1914 Society.

LIFE INSURANCE Should you have a life insurance policy that has outlived its origi-nal purposes, you might consider putting the money to work for Severn School. You can amend the existing policy so that Severn School is the benefi ciary.

GIFTS-IN-KIND Artwork, antiques, computer equipment, books, tickets for theatrical and sporting events, and valued collections currently qualify for charitable deductions when their use relates to the education Severn School provides. We welcome inquiries about such gifts.

MATCHING GIFTS Call your personnel offi ce to fi nd out if your company will double or even triple your donation to Severn School. More than 500 companies match gifts to independent schools.

WAY S TO G I V E

approach for you with your tax advisor or contact Mary Salsich at Severn’s Advancement Offi ce,

410-647-7701 ext. 2261 if you have any questions or would like
