The Bridge Outreach Service Autism in fiction The following list of books include autistic characters with some books also written by autistic authors. The reviews are taken from a range of online sources and do not necessarily represent the views of The Bridge. Where possible reviews by members of the autistic community were used to inform how authentic the portrayal of characters were perceived to be. The Disability in Kidlit website provided some particularly useful reviews http://disabilityinkidlit.com/. Suggested reader’s ages are included as rough guidelines, however, it is advised that you look over the content to ensure it is suitable for your readers. The Spaghetti Detectives by Andreas Steinhafel (9+) This is a quirky and entertaining read. Translated from German, it is the story of two misfit boys who find friendship as they set out to solve a very unusual mystery. The reader is drawn in right from the start, when the narrator Rico is intrigued to find a small piece of pasta on the pavement. This leads him to uncover the truth behind all manner of strange goings-on in his neighbourhood, including a local kidnapping plot. Rico is autistic and his friend Oscar is gifted and anxiety-ridden, and both are enormously likable. . A Whole New Ballgame by Phil Bildner (10+) Rip and Red are best friends whose fifth-grade year is nothing like what they expected. They have a crazy new tattooed teacher named Mr. Acevedo, who doesn't believe in tests or homework and who likes off-the-wall projects, the more "off" the better. They also find themselves with a new basketball coach: Mr. Acevedo! Easy-going Rip is knocked completely out of his comfort zone. And for Red, who has autism and really needs things to be exactly a certain way, the changes are even more of a struggle. But together these two make a great duo who know how to help each other―and find ways to make a difference―in the classroom and on the court. With its energetic and authentic story and artwork, this is a fresh, fun book about school, sports, and friendship.
