Law Alumni Network: Look Who’s Talking

Hosted by Nick Hughes (BCom LLB 92), Managing Director and Group COO, UBS Australasia. James Eyers (BCom

LLB 01), Managing Editor, Financial Review Capital magazine, will interview speakers Stephen Minns (BCom LLB 81), Chairman, Australia of King & Wood Mallesons and Michael Rose (BA LLB 85) Chief Executive Partner of Allens. The globalisation of Australia's major law firms has been a phenomenon in the last three years. Australian firms are expanding through acquisitions, mergers and strategic alliances. Why has this flurry of activities happened

now? Why have law firms chosen

different models of expansion? How will the globalisation of Australian law firms affect the legal services profession and

business in general? Hear first-hand from two UNSW Law Alumni about the different approach adopted by their firms, and how it has affected their firms, their staff and their clients. Tuesday 21 May 18:30-20:30 UBS AG, Level 16, Chifley Tower, 2 Chifley Square, Sydney RSVP online: http://lwt2013.eventbrite.com.au

New and Improved Poetic Justice

In the past, Poetic Justice was an annual publication produced by LawSoc that contained law-related articles from UNSW

law students. This year, Poetic Justice is going ONLINE! Each week, we will be inviting a contributor to write a piece on a hot topic that students will have the chance to read and comment on - yes, it's going to be interactive!

If you want to get involved as a writer and have your voice heard, or are interested in helping out in any way,

please email us at [email protected] now! If you have any ideas about topics you'd like to read about, also feel free to drop us a line.

Court of Conscience The Law Society is seeking passionate, informed and critical written submissions from law students to be published in Court of Conscience 2013! Court of Conscience is an annual publication run by the Law Society that aims to give students and academics the platform to express their issues, praise and concern about social justice issues, discussed and analysed in a legal framework. Submissions should be a maximum of 1500 - 2000 words in length and are due at 5pm Friday May 24.

Examples of previous student submissions can be found at http://www.unswlawsoc.org/?q=courtofc. For any further information or to send in a submission, contact Katerina Jovanovska at [email protected].

Great turnout to the first week of our Clerkship presentations series!

SLEG Student Presenters Would you like to raise young people’s awareness of police powers and their rights as consumers, employees and

citizens? If so, applications are now open for Student Presenter positions within the Schools Legal Education Group (SLEG). SLEG is a student-run organisation operating within the UNSW Law School for over 30 years that aims to empower high school students with knowledge of their legal rights through a youth-to-youth platform. Student Presenters will be trained and all relevant materials will be provided to ensure that they are equipped to conduct one hour

interactive classroom presentations during Semester 2, 2013. SLEG is proud to announce possible inclusion

of a human rights module to accompany existing consumer rights and police powers modules in 2013. If you are interested in volunteering with SLEG, please fill in the application here. JDs and LLBs of all stages are encouraged to apply. For further information, please contact the coordinators at [email protected]. Applications close at 5pm 20 May.

Drinks with the Judiciary

2013 will see the Law Society’s Social Justice team host the inaugural ‘Drinks with the Judiciary’ - an event that allows students to mingle with prominent judges and discuss contemporary issues regarding social justice in the court room and the legal system more generally. Students and judges will first participate in a Q&A style panel, before being given a unique opportunity to mingle and hold informal discussions over drinks. The role of the judge is often overlooked in discussions on the accessibility of justice. Can judges play an active role in protecting human rights? Is judicial activism a check on

legislative power or a violation of the separation of powers? Come and contribute your voice to the conversation as these pivotal issues of social justice are discussed. Guests for this event include: - The Hon Michael Kirby AC CMG - The Hon Ronald Sackville AO - The Hon Keith Mason AO, QC Light refreshments and drinks will be provided. Tuesday 21 May 18:00-21:00 Club Bar, Roundhouse

NSW Equity Breakfast The NSWYL Equity Breakfast is a key

initiative of the SCLSS to promote intervarsity discussion of pertinent social justice issues. In 2013, the theme for the event is Disability and the Law. At the breakfast, Our distinguished guest speaker, Professor Emeritus Ron McCallum AO will speak to the treatment of disability in Australian law and policy, and ways to address associated issues and barriers.

This is an event organised jointly by

the Law Student Societies of NSW. UNSW has 20 tickets to sell at $25 each. They are sold on a first come first serve basis. More details can be found here.
