Campfires in South East QLDWhere you can have campfires?

One of the highlights of camping, particularly in the cooler months, is sitting around a campfire telling stories and toasting marshmallows. While many National Parks and campgrounds do not allow open fires this policy differs depending on the location, time of year and weather conditions so always check before leaving and pay attention to changing conditions while you are there. In most campgrounds, fires need to be contained in a fire pit, fire drum or fire ring with a lot of sites providing designated areas. If a campfire is a must for your camping trip, we have complied a list of places that do allow open fires (except when fire bans apply):

• Bestbrook Mountain Resort, Maryvale• Boreen Point Campground, Boreen Point• Charlie Moreland Camping Area, Imbil State Forest• Gap Creek Farmstay, Tregony• Inskip Point Recreation Area, Inskip• Moreton Island National Park Camping Zones, Moreton Island (excluding The Wrecks and North Point campgrounds)

• Murphy’s Creek Escape, Murphy’s Creek• Mt Barney Lodge Country Retreat, Mt Barney• Neurum Creek Bush Retreat, Neurum• Peach Trees Camping Area, Jimna• Sandy Creek Campin’, Kilcoy• Teewah Beach Camping Area, Cooloola Recreation Area• Thunderbird Park, Tamborine Mountain• Tommerups Dairy Farm, Kerry

Campfire damperIt is so easy to make damper with a campfire and there

are 3 ways to do this.

1. Putting the mix into alfoil and cooking the damper in

the coals.

2. Using a camp stove which is a traditional cast iron pot.

Place the entire pot into the ground and cover with coals.

3. Wrap the mix around a green stick and cook directly

over the fire.

What you need to make Damper

2 cups of self-raising flour, 4 tablespoons of salted butter

and 1 cup of milk

Serve your damper as is or lather with butter, honey, jam

or golden syrup.

(Please note that all councils have strict rules about fire,

even fire pits, in the backyard and we recommend you

check the rules of your local council which you can

find on their websites).

Brisbane Kids travelFraser Island

Fraser Island is the world’s largest sand island and is listed as a World Heritage site. It is ideal for a weeklong getaway with plenty of attractions to keep the family busy. Getting thereAfter a three hour drive from Brisbane to Hervey Bay, there is a ferry over to the island which takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on the weather. You can take your own car across on the ferry as well, but keep in mind that you must have a 4WD to travel on Fraser Island as there are no sealed roads. Otherwise rental cars are an option. You need to arrange National Park permits and Vehicle Access from the barge landing sites.

Seeing Fraser Island without a 4WDThere are bus tours and private tours of Fraser Island available if you want help seeing all the main attractions. You will need to book in advance during the school holidays because it gets incredibly busy. Where to stayAccommodation options on the island range from camp sites to resorts. Temperatures are enjoyable throughout the year with winter months between 14 and 25 degrees; summer between 23 and 30. There are a few different places where you can buy food but these are located within the main camp areas.

Fresh water lakes and creeksFraser Island has many fresh water lakes and creeks with incredibly pure water. Lake McKenzie is one of the most popular, and is fed entirely by rainwater. The crystal clear water and soft white sand are ideal for families.

Eli Creek is another popular destination, located right on the picturesque beach so you can enjoy the scenery of the ocean while relaxing in the fresh water. Eli Creek literally provides a rainforest to ocean experience. There is nothing quite like floating down a fresh water stream that takes you straight into the ocean.

WildlifeWhale watching is what Fraser Island is known for; the season is June to November. There are also many mammals and a variety of bird life found on Fraser Island, but the island is probably best known for its purebred dingoes. There are many notice boards around the island warning visitors of precautions to take in regards to dingoes. Dingo sightings generally only happen at dawn and dusk and despite the danger, it is once again a moment you will never forget.

RainforestsThere are several different ecosystems on the island, giving visitors a wide variety of walks to enjoy. Different types of trees and plants can be spotted with the help of sign boards. Pictured is a 700 year old tree seen from the Wanggoolba creek walkway.

ShipwrecksThe Maheno Shipwreck is another unique spot for kids to visit slowly being claimed by the ocean but still offering a wonderful photo opportunity for families and will be a talked about curiosity!

Brisbane Kids travelPerisher - Australia’s own winter wonderland

For Brisbane Kids, snow is not something they experience everyday which is what makes a family trip to the snow so special and a must do holiday at least once in your lifetime.

Perisher really is a winter wonderland. Seven snow-capped mountains, 47 lifts, 50 runs and 4 resorts catering for all levels of skiers and boarders makes Perisher the biggest ski resort in the southern hemisphere. Located in the picturesque Kosciuszko National Park, The Snowy Mountains are approximately a 13 hour drive from Brisbane. Whether you chose to fly or drive, the snow season runs from June through to September which offers the opportunity to travel during school holidays or the school term.

Perisher has accommodation options to cater for every family and every budget from the exclusive on-snow hotels to camping grounds at nearby Jindabyne. A quick Google search is sure to find the perfect place to stay for your family.

While most people do ski or snowboard on their trip to the snow, there is so much more you can do on your family holiday.

The top 5 must-do activities that BK recommend that you do at Perisher are:• go tobogganing• visit the Magic Forest• have a snowball fight• drink a hot chocolate in Pretty Valley • of course build a snowman

We bet you can’t complete your snowman without at least one family member singing ‘Do You Want To Build A Snowman’ !

Free health checkFree health check for kids in Brisbane - June 2016

QUT’s Caboolture Campus Health Clinic is offering free health checks for kids in June 2016.

Open to all Brisbane Kids in Prep to Grade 12, the FREE Health Check Day will give families the opportunity to check on their child’s health and development. The assessments will be run by qualified optometrists, podiatrists and dietitians.

The free health checks include:• Foot checks• Vision screening• Dietary and lunch box advice• Education and development assessments

About half of the children who had their eyes tested in previous years failed the basic vision screening test. As poor eyesight can interfere with learning and reading, having your child’s eyesight checked is a priority.

The nutrition assessment will provide advice for fussy eaters and children with allergies and will offer lunch box inspiration.

The free health check for kids will be held on Wednesday 29th June 2016 from 9.30am – 2.30pm at the QUT Caboolture Campus Health Clinic, corner Tallon and Manley Streets, Caboolture.

If you have any nagging questions about your child’s health or development, phone the clinic on (07) 3138 9777 to book your child in for this free comprehensive screening. Visit www.healthclinics.qut.edu.au for more information.

Head to the Brisbane Kids website for a list of late night pharmacies, bulk billing and after hour doctors and speciality medical providers.

If your idea of a library is an old building full of books and a ‘Please be quiet’ sign, then it’s probably safe to say that you and your Brisbane Kids have not visited a library in Brisbane in quite some time! Today, our libraries are full of interactive activities for kids, including play spaces, gaming equipment, movie nights, fun weekly activities such as ‘Toddler Time’, crafting stations, holiday workshops, and so much more. However, it’s also reassuring to know that the heart of the library as we knew it has not changed. There are still thousands of books on offer to read—either in the library itself, or to take home to enjoy—in order to foster a love of books and reading in our Brisbane Kids.

A visit to any of the amazing libraries in Brisbane is a great day out for Brisbane Kids that doesn’t hinge on the weather, and the best bit of all is it’s FREE! Below is a sample of the variety of activities on offer at various libraries in Brisbane this winter. Please note that, while all events are free, bookings maybe required for some events held at your local library, so plan ahead.
