Staging of Exhibits:

Will be allowed between 8.00am until 9.45am on the morning of the show.

Exhibitors entrance for staging and removal of plants will be by the side

door from the front car park.

Note: Raising of exhibits is not allowed, except in Multi-Pot classes where

they may be lifted using saucers or pots to a maximum height of the pot being

shown. However, plants with flowers that trail below the bottom of the pot

may be lifted sufficiently so that the flowers hang freely.

Removal of Exhibits: Exhibits may be removed from the hall after the

presentation of awards.

Judging: Will start at 10am. and will be to the rules and guidelines in the

schedule and the 2013 (Duck Egg Blue) BFS Rulebook.

Awards will be presented at 4pm.

10. Exhibits should be free of pests and diseases. Plants with an obvious infestation will not be permitted in the show, and if found will be reported to the Show Organiser to arrange their removal. NB Infestation means swarm or overrun with pests or eggs. Plants with a small amount of pests or eggs will be down pointed. Plants with a small amount of disease will also be down pointed, but in the case of RUST or FUCHSIA GALL MITE the show organiser WILL remove plants.

11. Species must be listed in the current BFS Species list and must be correctly named. Notes (a) Plants in the Section Encliandra may not be shown in the classes for Species. (b) Also plants listed in nursery catalogues as Species are not necessarily botanically correct.

12. No exhibits or class cards may be removed before the end of the show without the special consent and in the presence of the Show Organiser.

13. Whilst Judging is in progress all persons, except the Judges, Stewards, Show Organiser and volunteers who record results and write cards, and any others given duties by the Show Organiser, must retire from the Hall.

14. Judges may withhold awarding any prize if the standard of the exhibit/s in a class is of exceptionally poor quality.

15. The BFS salver is to be awarded to the Exhibitor winning the most First prizes. In the case of a tie Second, then Third prizes will be taken into account. If an exhibitor gains more than one prize in classes permitting more than one entry, only the highest award will go towards the salver.

16. The Society reserves the right to disqualify any entry subsequently to found to be in breach of these regulations of those in the current rule book.

17. Any protest must be made in writing to the Show Organiser within one hour of the opening of the show. Complaints after this time, will be dealt with by the Show Sub-Committee or BFS Committee at a later date.

18. Whilst every reasonable precaution will be taken, The British Fuchsia Society does not hold itself responsible for the loss of, or damage to any exhibits before, during or after the show. All exhibits are shown at the exhibitor’s own risk.

19. Any matter not provided for in the Society rules will be dealt with by the Committee whose decision will be final.

20. Triphylla types exhibited, in the Triphylla Classes, must be on the current BFS Triphylla list and must be correctly named.

Imperial Conversions

Where metric sizes are given in the Show Schedule for the diameter of pots and baskets the following imperial sizes will be accepted: Clay pots will be measured

across the internal diameter at the top of the pot allowing for “out of shape”

9cm = 3.5”, 10cm = 4”, 13cm ≈ 5/5¼”, 15cm ≈ 6”,

18cm = 7”, 22cm = 8”, 25cm = 9”, 41cm = 16”

The British Fuchsia Society Show Definitions A. Bush: A bush is a plant which must be seen to have developed on a single stem

not exceeding 4cm. The entire plant should be covered with an abundance of healthy foliage and flower. The plant should present a balanced shape when viewed from all sides.

B. Shrub: A shrub is an exhibit with more than one shoot emerging from below compost level. It can also be grown from more than one plant. The entire shrub should be covered with an abundance of healthy foliage and flower. The exhibit should present a balanced shape when viewed from all sides.

C. Full Basket is to be top planted only and may contain more than one plant. Growth should fill the centre and top of the basket and surge over the edge in a sweeping cascade. Uniform growth with an abundance of healthy foliage and flower should continue to at least the depth of the basket, and be evenly distributed from the crown to the end of the trailing growths. The exhibit is to be viewed from the top and sides when displayed in an elevated position. The container should not be visible when viewed at eye level.

A full basket must be commercially manufactured as a hanging basket. The top must be circular in shape, should be not less than 30cm and not exceed 41cm, the maximum depth allowed is 25cm.

NB Full baskets may have flat bottoms, solid bases and straight sides.

A Half Basket is to be top planted only and may contain more than one plant. Growth should fill the centre and top of the half basket and surge over the edge in a sweeping cascade. Uniform growth with an abundance of healthy foliage and flower should continue to at least the depth of the basket, and be evenly distributed from the crown to the end of the trailing growths. The exhibit is to be viewed from the top, front and sides when displayed in an elevated position. The container should not be visible when viewed at eye level.

The basket must be commercially manufactured as a half basket. The top must be semi-circular in shape with the rear not exceeding 41cm in width; the maximum depth allowed is 25cm.

NB Half baskets may have flat bottoms, solid bases and flat sides.

D. Stakes and ties are allowed but should be inconspicuous.

A framework, however fashioned, is not allowed for Bush, Shrub, Baskets (full or half). Hanging pots, Small Pot Culture Baskets and all Standards. A framework however, may be used to support or train other shapes, e.g. Fans, Espaliers, Rings etc. – as in the current rule book classification.

E A Full Standard must not be less than 76cm, nor more than 107cm.

A Half Standard must not be less than 46cm, nor more than 76cm.

A Quarter Standard must not be less than 25cm, nor more than 46cm.

A Mini Standard must not be less than 15cm, nor more than 25cm.

These dimensions refer to the length of clear stem between the compost level and the underside of first branch on the stem.

Exhibitors Rules

1. The competitive classes are open to all members of The British Fuchsia Society.

2. Exhibitors are advised that this schedule does not contain all the rules and regulations appertaining to the show. They should also obtain and be conversant with the contents of the current BFS Exhibitors, Judges and Stewards Rule book and Guidelines (2013)

3. Exhibitors and those visiting the Shows must comply with the regulations and conditions imposed by the owners of the halls.

4. Exhibitors should report to the Show Organiser immediately on arrival at the Show for their Class and Variety Name Cards. Class Cards must be placed face downwards with the appropriate entry in each class. Variety Name Cards should be placed face upward in front of each entry. Exhibitors will be responsible for writing their own variety name cards and only those issued by the Society are allowed.

5. The Show Organiser will expect that all plants staged will have an appropriate sized terracotta saucer under each pot.

6. All plants must be the property of the Exhibitor and have been in his/her possession for at least three months prior to the Show. This also applies to plants from which flowers are taken for the flower boards.

7. Plants must not be potted up or down for the purpose of exhibiting in the show, although changing from a dirty one to a clean one of the same size is allowed.

8. All exhibits must be correctly and legibly named where possible. Errors in naming will not disqualify an exhibit. If an exhibitor does not know the name of the cultivar it should be labelled “Name Unknown”.

9. Hardies must be on the current BFS Hardy list and must be correctly named.

F. Plant pots: The vertical height of pots up to 18cm must not exceed the diameter at the top and the pot must have a distinct taper. The diameter of a pot is the inside, measurement as near to the top as possible. The colour of the pots must be terracotta. The more straight sided “ containers” or “shrub” pots are excluded. NB The vertical height of pots over 18cm diameter may exceed the diameter at the top and may have a rolled top rim and/or surface decoration.

G. Hanging pots: A hanging pot must be one which is commercially manufactured as a hanging pot. Ordinary plant pots with hangers are prohibited. Any colour hanging pot may be used.

NB (a) Hanging pots must have solid sides, (b) Refer to the Schedule for sizes.

H. Triphylla Type: See the current BFS Show Bench Triphylla List.

NB Any other Triphylla type not included in the list may be exhibited in either the singles/semi double classes, any cultivar class or the more unusual cultivar class.

I. Encliandra Types are those sometimes referred to as Breviflorae and have their origins in the Section Encliandra. Encliandra types cannot be exhibited in Species classes.

J. A Fuchsia Flower normally has four sepals. It is, however, appreciated that some cultivars habitually throw blooms with more or less than four sepals. This must not be treated as a cultural fault.

NB Flowers in flower board classes must have four sepals.

K. A Single Flower has four petals. A Semi Double Flower has five to seven petals. A Double Flower has eight or more petals.

NB Semi double flowered fuchsias must be exhibited in single flowered or any cultivar classes.

L. Small Pot Culture allows any type of growth other than Bush, Shrub or Single Stemmed Standard. E.g. Baskets, Espalier, Fan, Pillar, Conical, Pyramid, Ring, Decorative Standard or any other shape.

Pot size for all classes except baskets should not exceed 13cm. Baskets should not exceed 15.4cm (6”) at the top, be circular in shape, of open mesh construction and may have a flat bottom.

NB In this class the exhibitor may use their own stand, but these must not be taken into account when judging.

M. Unusual Cultivar Class: This class is designed to allow what are considered the more unusual cultivars e.g. Interspecific types and cultivars that show uncommon characteristics. The good spirit of the exhibitor and the judge will make this possible.

NB This class is not intended for plants that can be exhibited elsewhere in the show, no matter how difficult they are to grow or shape.

N. A Beginner is an exhibitor who has not won a First, Second or Third Prize at any previous years BFS show.

O. A Novice is an exhibitor who has not won a First Prize, with the exception of the Beginners Class at any previous years BFS show.

Exhibitors Notes a. Classes marked with * must be bush or shrub trained – see definitions A & B.

b. Classes marked ** should have a more natural appearance.

c. All Varieties to be named and all Seedlings to be coded rather than being named or called a seedling and a BFS supplied variety or seedling name/code cards must be used.

d. The term DISTINCT shall mean – obviously visually different – in leaf and/or flower.

e. An exhibitor may have ONE ENTRY only per class in section 1 (classes 3 to 20) and TWO ENTRIES in each class in section 2 (classes 1 – 2 and 21 – 35). Each entry MUST be distinctly different. However, entries in classes 31, 32, 33 & 35 may be the same cultivar, but they MUST be a different shape.

f. Classes marked with # form part of the Midland Championship.

g. a.s.p. in the pot size column means Any Size Pot.

h. Triphylla Classes – see current BFS Triphylla Show Bench List– see definition H. NB Any Triphylla which is included on the BFS list CANNOT be exhibited in classes 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 22, 23 & 24.

i. The colour of the plant pots (other than Hanging Pots) must be terracotta.

j N.W.F.S. Trophy: It is the responsibility of the exhibitor to place one of the cards

Supplied in front of each single stem bush plant to be eligible for the N.W.F.S Trophy.

k The height of a ‘Mame’ Bonsai must not exceed 15cm from top of compost to top of the exhibit.
