TheBritishInternationalSchool MadinatyYear Book 2013-2014
Welcome.
Dear Students,As I write this introduction to our Yearbook for 2013 – 2014, I am astonished at how fast this school year is coming to an end. You have come so far in one year and I would like to personally congratulate you on the successful completion of your studies. Your promotion is a major step in your education and we are very proud of you.
It has been our major purpose to help you grow into intelligent, compassionate and responsible students. Our emphasis has always been to develop in you the necessary skills that you will need for a sound educational foundation. Each of your teachers has had so much to offer you. They have contributed to and influenced your intellectual, social and emotional growth. Remember that honesty, hard work, friendship, sensitivity and respect for yourselves and others are not just words but rather personal goals for a lifetime as productive students and citizens. I have no doubt that you will continue to carry on to be productive students and citizens.
Thanks to our wonderful staff, we have enjoyed a flurry of culminating activities and some truly memorable moments with you and your families. Back in October last year we had a super Halloween Day celebration with some amazing costumes made by your Mums and Dads. One of the highlights for me was our Christmas Concert with the beautiful blue backdrop covered in snowflakes made by all of you. Our teachers topped that even further with the International Day in Term 2. We had Italy, Hawaii, India, Japan and Scotland amongst the nations represented. It was a wonderful opportunity for the children to learn about the culture and food of completely different countries. Sports Day was truly memorable. I know you all thought throwing wet sponges at the teachers was hilarious and we actually had to hold it in the school hall in case it rained – unbelievable!
An unexpected consequence was the introduction of the dreaded ZUMBA, run by Mrs. Jo, to help our Mums get back in shape - lucky ladies! For Mother's Day our Reception children held a formal ball and got all dressed up for the day. In Term 3, we introduced Extra Curricular Activities (ECAs) and these have been a big hit with the children. We also installed our new ICT suite and started a computer club for ECA which is always busy. Another sell-out success with the children is Mr. Moe's Drum Club! It is great to see the children taking part with such enthusiasm. We held our Spring Concert just a short time ago followed by Book Week where the highlight was the parade of costumes for favourite book characters.
We can look back with smiles on a great year and you can read all about it right here in our Yearbook created by the enormous efforts of Mrs. Sandra Husain and Mr. Moe Asem to whom go my deepest thanks and appreciation.
I echo our staff when I say we wish you all the best next year and continued success in achieving your goals. I. HarrisonPrincipal

STAY PREPARED OVER THE SUMMER HOLIDAYS
Reading over the summer is critical to your child’s success and makes a difference upon their return to the new school year. We strongly encourage all children to read at least six books over the summer, two of them non-fiction. For Reception, KG and Pre-School, a review of letter sounds is critical to retaining the knowledge your child has attained throughout the year. Read to them at least 15 minutes a day and have your child talk about what they remember from the story.
The research is very clear that the books read at home should be easy. If your child wants a harder book, read it aloud to him or her. Reading aloud to kids of all ages is a great tradition that builds vocabulary, comprehension and is just plain fun. Talking with your child about books also improves your child’s reading comprehension. Taking turns reading or listening to a parent read aloud develops vocabulary as well as a love of reading. In fact, the more you engage your children in meaningful conversation in general the more they will improve their thinking and speaking.
Some possible questions you can ask your child after reading: What has happened so far in the book? What do you think the character will do next? Why?What are you wondering about the book/story now? What is the problem in the story and how is it getting solved? Can you re-tell the basic story/facts about the book? How does it begin, end? What happens in the middle?
If your child is not an eager reader, encourage any reading such as comic books, sports, series books, joke books, magazines, online stories read aloud.
