A WELCOME FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Guests

Welcome to the Festival of Achievement for 2014.

The British School of Kuwait (BSK) deservedly gained its accolade as a ‘World Class British School’ following a triple inspection, last year, by the Office for Standards in Education (OfSTED), the British Schools in the Middle East (BSME) and the United Kingdom Department for Education (DfE).

This year, BSK has been able to take full advantage of its British Overseas School (BSO) status by forming a partnership with Buckinghamshire Learning Trust to induct newly-qualified teachers into the profession. Joining a teaching staff of over 200, BSK appointed twelve newly-qualified teachers this year. The energy, enthusiasm and skills that these young teachers have brought to the school complement perfectly the experience and dedication of our existing team.

BSK was the pioneer of the integration of computers into the normal teaching environment. By installing a wireless network (wifi), building a virtual learning environment (VLE), installing SMART interactive whiteboards (IWBs) in every classroom and ensuring that all Secondary students use a laptop computer as easily as a pencil or pen, BSK has been able to provide a 21st century approach to teaching and learning.

This year we will take the next step in eLearning by ensuring that all students in the Primary phase utilise iPad technology to access a wide range of interactive learning applications.

All students that have re-registered for Year 2 to Year 5 of the new academic year have already been gifted an iPad Mini and have started to utilise approved educational ‘Apps’. Next term, all students that have re-registered for Year 1 will be gifted an iPad Mini also. At the same time, the school will enhance its wifi capability and the VLE will be expanded further to hold important resources for students, parents and teachers to share. This investment demonstrates once again the long-term vision of BSK to offer the very best learning environment for our students.

Investment is not limited to computers and iPads. New suites of classrooms have been constructed to house our Secondary Mathematics, Modern Languages and History teams. A new subject team, dedicated to Middle Department Science, has been appointed and will be based in two new, fully equipped, science laboratories. Design and Technology has been re-equipped with some of the latest equipment include new wood-turning lathes, a new metal-turning lathe and, the first in a school in Kuwait, a laser-cutting machine for student use. This device will eliminate old-fashioned band-saws for the purpose of precision cutting and can be seen as an extension of the eLearning approach found in the academic subjects.

In my speech this evening, I will outline the achievements of students and the advances in teaching and learning taking place in both the Primary and Secondary phases of the school. I will also outline the success of our massive extracurricular programme that offers opportunities which, if taken, enhance the prospects of our students in their university application as well as providing them with experiences to treasure for the rest of their lives.

The main focus, of course, will be on our departing graduates. I will take the opportunity to reflect on the outstanding public examinations results of last year’s graduates and challenge this year’s cohort to do even better. Certainly, the impressive list of offers from leading universities to our Sixth Form students confirms the claim of BSK to stand as Kuwait’s premier school.
