The Building Blocks of Character ~ 21 Characteristics that Culminate In Greatness
There are many important and distinct qualities to lead to achievement, namely among them:Respect, Unity, Responsibility, Accountability, Discipline, Trust, Sacrifice, Humility, Work Ethic,
Commitment, Confidence, Courage, Poise, Passion, Purpose, Desire, Determination,
Perseverance, Excellence, Pride, & Competitive Greatness.
_____________________________________________________________________________________The building blocks provide a powerful pathway to both individual greatness and collective team excellence._____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Having Character means doing all the little things right: every time, all the time. Character creates the
foundation for success. “Character is the firm foundation stone upon which one must build to win respect.Just as no worthy building can be erected on a weak foundation, so no lasting reputation worthy of respect
can be built on a weak character.” (R. C. Samsel) Always remember that, success and character go hand-
in-hand. “Until you get character, you’re not going to win. Get character, then you have got a chance.”_____________________________________________________________________________________
Respect is about treating people right. Live by the golden rule, and always show respect to others.
Treat everyone the way you’d want to be treated…plain and simple. Remember This: You can tell
virtually all you need to know about a man by the way he treats others. Respect Is the Foundation of Everything We Do: Respect is the pre-requisite to all forms of teamwork. Before we can work together,
we first have to come together. Before we can come together, we first have to learn how to get along with
one another. We have to learn to treat each other with respect.
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Unity is about coming together as one. It’s about coming together as one team, one group, one unit, onefamily. A family is a group of many, united together as one. A family is joined together in commitment,
brotherhood, and love. There is strength in numbers, true. But the greatest strength lies, not in the mere
numbers themselves, but in the UNITY of those numbers. Therefore: there is strength in unity. Unity is
about coming together for a worthy cause: it is about many people, having one purpose. Many people:
one focus, one mission, one purpose.
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Responsibility means doing what you’re supposed to do, when you’re supposed to do it. It means
being where you're supposed to be, when you're supposed to be there. It means doing what you say you
are going to do, and doing right by yourself and by others. Be responsible: Be where you're supposed to
be, when you're supposed to be there — and do what you're supposed to do when you get there.
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Accountability means being truthful with yourself and to others, being honest with yourself and with
others, being committed to yourself and to others, and being responsible for yourself and to others. Be
accountable: Know what you’re supposed to do. Do what you’re supposed to do. And do it to the best of
your ability. Be reliable and be dependable. If you say you are going to do something: do it. If you say
that you stand for something: make sure that you stand firmly and truthfully.
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Discipline means doing what needs to be done, when it needs to be done: period. No excuses needed.
Focus on what is most important. Take care of business first, then worry about everything else second.
The price of achievement is the discipline to do what is required in order to be successful. “The definition
of discipline: Do what has to be done, when it has to be done, as well as it can be done. And do it that
way every time.” (Anonymous) “Discipline yourself and others won’t have to.” ~ John Wooden

Trust is all about being able to be counted on. Trust means always coming through; always doing what
you’re supposed to do; coming through and doing what you’re expected to do; doing what other people
need you to do; and doing what other people are counting on you to do. Trust means being able to say:
“You can COUNT ON ME” … and have it be true. You build trust by: Keeping your word,
by being honest, by being on time, by being reliable, and by being dependable.
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Sacrifice means putting your mission first: Sacrifice means putting your goals ahead of your desires.
It means making all the right choices, developing all the right habits, and continuing to walk along the
straightest path toward accomplishing your objective — toward bringing your mission to fruition. Sacrifice
means putting the team first: Sacrifice is about putting the needs of the team ahead of your own personal
wants. It is about putting the needs of your teammates ahead of your own desires. Sacrifice is about
putting the success of the team ahead of your own individual accomplishments.
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Humility is about seeing yourself in proper perspective: in relation to other people, and in relation to whoyou are capable of becoming. It requires the understanding that you are part of something far bigger than
yourself: your team, your family, and the entire human race. Humility means understanding that the world
does not revolve around you; that it’s not always about you, but rather, it’s about other people. After all: “It’s not about you. It’s about them.” (Bob Ladouceur). Be humble: Put others first in life, put the team
ahead of yourself, put the needs and feelings of others ahead of your own wants and desires._____________________________________________________________________________________
Work Ethic is all about understanding the cost of success — that every accomplishment must be earned
through hard work and perseverance — and then being willing to pay the price for all you wish to achieve. The will to prepare, the will to work, the will to train, the will to be the best, the will to outwork everyone
else: all these help you squeeze every drop out of your potential, they help you get every single ounce of
gas out of your fuel tank in life…they help you maximize your life. And that, is what champions are allabout. The better you want to become, the harder you have to work. It is that simple. Hard work is the
great equalizer, and ultimately, the great distinguisher. Work ethic closes a lot of gaps. Ultimately, it is
work ethic that makes champions.
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Commitment means finishing what you start. It means following through on what you say that you are
going to do. Commitment means valuing your words and keeping your promises. It means honoring your
responsibilities and fulfilling your obligations. Commitment means starting something that is worth
doing; but more importantly, commitment means finishing off everything that you start. A promise
is made with a start, but a true commitment is realized when you finish what you begin.
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Confidence means believing in yourself, believing in your abilities, believing in something greater than
yourself, and believing that life — truly — is full of possibilities. Confidence is truly believing in your
mind and body, and knowing in your heart and soul, that you can accomplish anything that you set your
mind to. Being confident means thinking in positive ways, speaking in positive terms, and acting in
positive and productive manners. Confidence is the key that opens the door to achievement and unlocks
the path to potential. Confidence frees us to do the things that we are fully capable of doing. It is a
mindset — a positive approach to life and to living — that permits us to rise to the challenge at hand,
overcome the obstacles before us, and attain the ultimate potential that awaits us.

Courage means doing what is right, always. It means doing what is best, at all times, and regardless of the rest. True courage means fighting the current of popular opinion, and holding true to your principles
and values. Having courage means knowing what you stand for, and more importantly, actually standing
up when called upon to do so. Being courageous also means being yourself, when it might be easier to
side with everyone else. It means being willing to do what you know is right, good, and true, regardless
of other people’s thoughts or opinions. Displaying courage is about forgetting your fears and focusing on
your goals. It is about forgetting your weaknesses and focusing on your strengths. Be courageous: do your best, do what’s right, and do what you k now to be true. Be yourself, believe in yourself,
and do what you know — in your heart — that you are able to do.
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Poise means calm, thinking clearly, and acting appropriately. It means being aware of your surroundings,
being alert to what is happening at the present moment, and anticipating what may happen next in the
future. Having poise allows you to accurately and objectively assess your circumstances, determine whatneeds to be done, identify what you can do, and then carrying out those actions in an effective and swift
way. It is what separates the peak performers from all the rest, because it is what allows you to execute in
the face of obstacles and problems, when other people might not be able to. Play smart, be focused, keep
your wits about you, and keep your composure at all times. Do the right thing, on and off the field. Keep
your head on straight. Stay focused on doing what you need to do._____________________________________________________________________________________
Passion is all about having an enthusiasm for what you are doing, and a desire to accomplish what you
are pursuing. It is about taking an upbeat approach to a given task. It means having a love for what you
are doing, enjoying the opportunity to be doing what you are doing, and striving to do everything to the
very best of your ability. Having passion means giving your fullest and best effort to the task at hand —
because what you are doing has meaning to you. Playing with passion means striving to do two things:
to work as hard as you can, and to have as much fun as you can in the process. If you can do these two
things, simultaneously, then you are going to make the most of your talents and your opportunities, you
are going to reach your absolute full potential. In the process, you are going to enjoy doing it all, as well.
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Purpose is about working toward the accomplishment of a specific goal, objective, or mission. It meansmaximizing your time, talents, and opportunities. It means doing everything that you can to become your
best, to achieve your most, and to live your life to the maximum and total fullest. Have a purpose for all
that you do in life: Be diligent; be determined; make the most of your time. Maximize yourself and your
abilities. Make the most of your talents, abilities, and opportunities. Don’t just be working: be preparing
for something, be training for something, be improving for something. Practice to perform. Work to win.
Exercise to excel. Don’t just go through the motions in life. Instead, give everything you have to makethe most of everything you do. Practice with purpose. Play with purpose. Live with purpose.
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Desire is the driving force that leads to all achievement. Desire is the fire that drives the man higher. It provides the motivation and the willingness to make the sacrifices necessary for success. Desire creates
the inspiration and the passion that enable an individual to make the commitments that are required inorder to succeed. Desire is the metaphorical “Breakfast of Champions.” Every champion starts his day
with desire. He begins each morning with a dream, a goal, and a plan. Desire is what fuels all the work
and sacrifice, the commitment and determination, and everything else that goes into building a champion. Desire is the driving force behind the tremendous work ethic that all champions possess.

Determination means finding a way to finish the task at hand, and to accomplish the mission that youhave planned. Determination means persisting and persevering until the last. It means doing what needs
to be done in order to get the job done. It means finding a way to win. It means finding a way to succeed.
Determination is the will of a man in action. It is the intestinal fortitude of a man on full display. Living
with determination means having the will to begin, the heart to continue, and the toughness to fight until
you achieve your objective. Always remember this one fact: You measure the strength of a man not by
his physical prowess, but rather, by the strength of his determination._____________________________________________________________________________________
Perseverance means always trying, and never quitting. Being persistent means always giving your best,
and never — ever — giving up. Being persistent means being positive, being productive, being deliberate,
and being unwilling to ever — ever — quit. Persevere to the last: Keep working and keep believing. Keep
striving and keep achieving. Stay focused and stay determined, and no matter what: Just keep working.
Persistence is the hard work you do after you get tired of doing all the hard work you’ve already done. _____________________________________________________________________________________
Excellence is all about making a commitment to doing your personal best. It involves working to reach
your full potential in every regard, giving your absolute finest effort in every area of your life, and doing
your absolute very best in each and every one of your endeavors. Living with excellence means always…Doing your best, giving your best, and being your best. Living a life of excellence means constantly…
Striving to be first-rate in anything and everything you do, striving to be first-rate in who you are andwho you become as a person, striving to give your greatest effort to life and the way you live it, and
striving to reach your greatest potential at all times, and in all ways.
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Pride is the positive, focused, and powerful desire to do the absolute best that you can do, in every
moment of your life, and in every one of your chosen endeavors. It is the kind of energy that is focused
on making the most of your talents and opportunities; the kind that is focused on helping you reach your
absolute full potential; and the kind that drives you to be first-rate in everything you do, and first-class in
everything you are and become. Pride comes from having a positive image of yourself, a strong sense of
personal identity and purpose in your life, a healthy amount of self-esteem, an incredible amount of self-
respect, and a true and deep understanding of your own personal self-worth. Having a positive pride inyour life means that you approach everything you do and say with an attitude of excellence.
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Competitive Greatness is the culmination of many attitudes, traits, behaviors, and habits — all aimed at
working toward and reaching your absolute full potential in every regard. Competitive Greatness also is
the result of all the hard work, commitment, and determination that comes with a driving desire to do the
best, to be the best, and to be the most deserving of victory and success. It comes from more than the
desire to simply win on occasion; it comes from the desire — and the corresponding work ethic — to win
every single time that you compete. It comes from more than the desire to simply be good; it comes from
the desire to be great. It comes from more than the desire to just succeed; it comes from the desire todominate. Competitive Greatness is the culmination of these things. It is the crowning achievement of
every intention and every action to be the absolute best, to achieve success, and to attain excellence._____________________________________________________________________________________________

The Building Blocks of Character – Character Education Program
Each week, you can discuss an important character trait with your group or team, that
will help each individual to become successful… on the field, in the classroom, and in life. Eachlesson will involve introducing, defining, and discussion an important character trait. The team
will then work together to create a unique “Team Definition” of what each particular character
trait means. As the lessons accumulate, the impact of the traits’ meanings will begin to play itself out within the attitudes, actions, and habits of the team members and the overall team as a whole.
The traits will be used as the guiding themes for each week, and will be reinforced at
every opportunity, during each and every day that follows. Formal follow-up lessons, along with
impromptu, informal discussions, will help drive home the value of the lessons being taught. Asthe days and weeks unfold, your team and its members will gain confidence, competence, class,
and character — both individually, and collectively — not only on the field of play, but more
importantly, in the great Game of Life as well.__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
A Sample Weekly Schedule for Character Lessons
Monday: Introduce & discuss one Building Block of Character – Lesson & Discussion
Create a sign or designated bulletin-board area to acknowledge and encourage positive
Attitude, positive behavior, and the positive display of character. Label the space as a
“Praise Board,” and set aside time every day (a few minutes each day) to praise peopleFor their positive acts of character. Give credit where credit is due, & more importantly,
Allow each member of the team to “pass the praise” to other teammates. Feel free toUse these Praise Sessions often, in order to help encourage positive character displays.
Tuesday: Hang up a corresponding “Sign of the Week” for a special saying, motto, or slogan.
Wednesday: Create & Post a “Team Definition” for the trait. Post that definition for display.

Some Helpful Suggestions & Ideas
Suggestions for Implementing the ProgramIdeas for Teaching & Discussing the Character Traits
Instill the Traits – Use the Lesson Plans, Notes & Quotes, & Workbook, to Build Character
Implement The Building Blocks of Character program by setting aside time (each day or eachweek) to introduce the character traits, discuss their definitions and meanings, and to drive home
the value of learning, developing, and displaying each trait. Use the lesson plans, notes-&-quotes,and the lessons and group-discussion-questions included in the workbook, to help teach all 21 of
the distinct character traits that make-up the Building Blocks of Character.
Build the Character Pyramid – Construct “The Building Blocks of Character” Pyramid
With each character lesson, make sure that you cut-out and hang-up each corresponding
“Building Block of Character.” Over time, you eventually will build the entire pyramid of character. This pyramid will become an important mainstay for your team, so make sure that
you display it prominently in your team’s locker room, the weight room, office, or classroom.
Create Team Definitions – Discuss, Define, & Decide What Each Trait Means to the TeamDefine each trait, discuss each trait, and decide what each trait means to you and your team.
The team will come up with its own definition for each character trait. That definition will then
be posted on display in the team’s locker room, on “The Building Blocks of Character” board.
Post Weekly Signs – Post Signs and Give-out Handouts with Each LessonEach week, hang-up or post corresponding signs in your team’s locker room, weight room, or
classroom. Post quotes, slogans, & sayings to help reinforce the important lessons learned. Use
the lesson plans, notes-&-quotes, and the building blocks themselves to create relevant handouts.
Give out special handouts or signs each week, post them in lockers, or simply post them in thelocker room and discuss their overall relevance to character, the team, and to life in general.
Create A Praise Board – Call It The “Champions Every Day” Praise Board
Recognize positive displays of character — specifically relevant to the trait being discussed thatday or week. Acknowledge individuals who display the positive character traits discussed, by
creating a “Praise Board” somewhere in your locker room, weight room, or classroom, to keep
track of positive character displays throughout each day and each week. You can call the sign the
“Champions Every Day” Praise Board, and you can set aside time each day or week to add to it.
People will be acknowledged and praised for their positive efforts and contributions to the team,
the school, and the community. Names will be added to the “Champions Every Day” PraiseBoard each day or each week, and will be recorded in the team or group’s designated area.
Have A Daily “Praise Period” – Pass the Praise; Give Credit Where Credit Is Due
Set aside time each day or each week (perhaps for just a few minutes each day) to praise people
for their positive acts of character. Give credit where credit is due, and more importantly, allow
each member of the team to “pass the praise” to other teammates. Feel free to use these “PraiseSessions” often, in order to help encourage positive character displays.
8/2/2019 The Building Blocks of Character - Team Workbook & Discussion Guide
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-building-blocks-of-character-team-workbook-discussion-guide 11/190
10
Post A “Quote of the Day” – Use Quotes, Stories, Profiles, or Analogies to Add to Each Lesson
Select positive quotes to read to the team, or to post in the locker room each day. Choose quotesthat correspond to the character traits discussed each week. Ask team members to bring in quotes
they find as well. If you would like, you can even designate specific people each week, to bring
in a quote or saying that has personal meaning to them.
Double-Up On Character – Put 2 Blocks In Place Each Week
Teach one character lesson each week. Or, if time permits, feel free to add an additional
“Character -Building” session each week. Some groups or teams will dedicate time to teach twoBuilding Blocks each week. In fact, the character traits are setup and arranged in corresponding
fashion, which means that they go together in sets of two. (For example: Respect & Unity,
Responsibility & Accountability, Work Ethic & Commitment, Excellence & Pride, etc.)
Double-Up On Character Throughout the Year – Build the Pyramid Year-RoundImplement “The Building Blocks of Character” program at multiple times throughout the courseof the year. For example: a sports team can teach the Building Blocks daily, for a 1-month period
during the off-season. Then, once the regular season begins, the team can discuss one (or more)
Building Blocks each week, making the character traits the designated theme for the week.
A football team might set aside 21 days in the spring (or the summer) to teach all 21 traits,
discussing one trait each day. Then, during the fall football season, that team might dedicate
time each week to discussing two Building Blocks each week. These Blocks will help create thethemes of each week. Over the course of the spring or summer, the team will build the entire
“Building Blocks of Character” pyramid. Then, once the season begins in the fall, the team will
delve into the deeper meanings and lessons of each Block in the pyramid.
A sample blueprint for a lesson-plan follows on the next page.
A page for recording each of the character trait definitions follows after that.

Having Character
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Having Character means doing all the little things right: every time, all the time. Character creates the
foundation for success. “Character is the firm foundation stone upon which one must build to win respect.
Just as no worthy building can be erected on a weak foundation, so no lasting reputation worthy of respectcan be built on a weak character.” (R. C. Samsel) Always remember that, success and character go hand-
in-hand. Until you get character, you’re not going to win. Get character, then you will have a chance. _____________________________________________________________________________________

Unity
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Unity is about coming together as one. It’s about coming together as one team, one group, one unit, one
family. A family is a group of many, united together as one. A family is joined together in commitment,
brotherhood, and love. There is strength in numbers, true. But the greatest strength lies, not in the merenumbers themselves, but in the UNITY of those numbers. Therefore: there is strength in unity. Unity is
about coming together for a worthy cause: it is about many people, having one purpose. Many people:
one focus, one mission, one purpose.
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Important Unity Quotes
“To win, there must be a strong sense of togetherness, of group support and purpose.
It is this kind of team spirit that wins games and overcomes adversity.” ~ George Allen
“Individual commitment to a group effort; that is what makes a team work…
a company work , a society work, a civilization work.” ~ Vince Lombardi

Discipline
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Discipline means doing what needs to be done, when it needs to be done: period. No excuses needed.
Focus on what is most important. Take care of business first, then worry about everything else second.
The price of achievement is the discipline to do what is required in order to be successful. “The definitionof discipline: Do what has to be done, when it has to be done, as well as it can be done. And do it that
way every time.” (Anonymous) “Discipline yourself and others won’t have to.” ~ John Wooden
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Important Discipline Quotes
“Discipline is hard work done for the sake of excellence.” ~ Chuck Swindoll
“Do what has to be done, when it has to be done, as well as it can be done.
And do it that way every time.” ~ An Anonymous Author
“Discipline yourself and others won’t have to.” ~ John Wooden
“Do today what others won’t, so tomorrow you
can do what others can’t.” ~ Anonymous
Important Discipline Points
~ If you do the things you need to do, when you need to do them,
Then you’ll be able to do the things you want to do, when you want to do them.
.
~ Make it a habit to do the things you don’t want to do. Often in life, what separates thepeople who are successful from everyone else, is not talent, but rather, the willingness to do
the things necessary to achieve success. Very rarely are these the “glamorous” things. But they are the things that ultimately will enable you to go above and
beyond what others are capable of doing and achieving.
~ Do what has to be done. Be willing to pay the price for success.~ Discipline and diligence are the mothers of achievement.

Sacrifice
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Sacrifice means putting your mission first: Sacrifice means putting your goals ahead of your desires.
It means making all the right choices, developing all the right habits, and continuing to walk along the
straightest path toward accomplishing your objective — toward bringing your mission to fruition. Sacrificemeans putting the team first: Sacrifice is about putting the needs of the team ahead of your own personal
wants. It is about putting the needs of your teammates ahead of your own desires. Sacrifice is about
putting the success of the team ahead of your own individual accomplishments.
_____________________________________________________________________________________

Humility
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Humility is about seeing yourself in proper perspective: in relation to other people, and in relation to who
you are capable of becoming. It requires the understanding that you are part of something far bigger than
yourself: your team, your family, and the entire human race. Humility means understanding that the worlddoes not revolve around you; that it’s not always about you, but rather, it’s about other people. After all: “It’s not about you. It’s about them.” (Bob Ladouceur). Be humble: Put others first in life, put the team
ahead of yourself, put the needs and feelings of others ahead of your own wants and desires.
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Important Humility Quotes
“Be humble or get humbled.” ~ Bill Belichick
“Be humble, or somebody is going to make you humble.” ~ P. J. Kavanagh
“Once guy can’t do it by himself, and it’s a matter of recognizing this
and giving others their share of the credit.” ~ Archie Manning
“It’s amazing how much you can accomplish in life…
if you don’t care who gets the credit.”~ Hall of Famer, Bart Starr ~
Important Humility Points
~ Be humble, and never be satisfied with what you have accomplished.~ Stay focused on improving, and keep working to get better at every opportunity.
~ Be humble, and always be respectful of other people’s contributions.
~ Be humble, or somebody’s going to make you humble.

WORK ETHIC

Work Ethic
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Work Ethic is all about understanding the cost of success — that every accomplishment must be earned
through hard work and perseverance — and then being willing to pay the price for all you wish to achieve.
The will to prepare, the will to work, the will to train, the will to be the best, the will to outwork everyoneelse: all these help you squeeze every drop out of your potential, they help you get every single ounce of
gas out of your fuel tank in life…they help you maximize your life. And that, is what champions are all
about. The better you want to become, the harder you have to work. It is that simple. Hard work is the
great equalizer, and ultimately, the great distinguisher. Work ethic closes a lot of gaps. Ultimately, it is
work ethic that makes champions.
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Important Work Ethic Quotes
“Success is like anything worthwhile. It has a price. You have to pay the price to win and you have to pay the price
to get to the point where success is possible. Most important,
you must pay the price to stay there.” ~ Vince Lombardi
““There’s no success, without the work required to be successful.” ~ Clark Kellogg
“There’s a lot of blood, sweat, and guts between dreams and success.” ~ Paul “Bear” Bryant
“In this life we get nothing, except through effort.” ~ Theodore Roosevelt
Important Work Ethic Points
~ A man must work hard if he wishes
To attain any degree of success in this life.
The amount of hard work which he invests will
Determine the degree of success which he achieves.
~ There is one true formula for making progress and attaining success:
The better you want to become, the harder you have to work. It is that simple.
~ You are not born with success. You are not given success. You do not inherit success.Success is not something that you can talk your way into, nor is it something that you
Can back your way into. Rather, success is something that you must earn.
~ Victory cannot merely be dreamed about: it must be earned. Therefore, the will to work must precede the will to win.
~ You have to earn the right to be successful. What is more…
You have to earn the right to continue to be successful.

Commitment
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Commitment means finishing what you start. It means following through on what you say that you are
going to do. Commitment means valuing your words and keeping your promises. It means honoring your
responsibilities and fulfilling your obligations. Commitment means starting something that is worthdoing; but more importantly, commitment means finishing off everything that you start. A promise
is made with a start, but a true commitment is realized when you finish what you begin.

Confidence
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Confidence means believing in yourself, believing in your abilities, believing in something greater than
yourself, and believing that life — truly — is full of possibilities. Confidence is truly believing in your
mind and body, and knowing in your heart and soul, that you can accomplish anything that you set yourmind to.

Courage
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Courage means doing what is right, always. It means doing what is best, at all times, and regardless of
the rest. True courage means fighting the current of popular opinion, and holding true to your principles
and values. Having courage means knowing what you stand for, and more importantly, actually standingup when called upon to do so. Being courageous also means being yourself, when it might be easier to
side with everyone else. It means being willing to do what you know is right, good, and true, regardless
of other people’s thoughts or opinions. Displaying courage is about forgetting your fears and focusing onyour goals. It is about forgetting your weaknesses and focusing on your strengths. Be courageous: do your
best, do what’s right, and do what you k now to be true. Be yourself, believe in yourself,
and do what you know — in your heart — that you are able to do._____________________________________________________________________________________

command through a dangerous situation because you know it must be done.”
“Courage is doing the right thing in spite of taunts, peer disapproval, or physical danger. And it is true
courage when you are doing the right thing, and no one will ever know what you have done.”~ Statement from the Marine Military Academy of Harlingen, Texas
Important Courage Points
~ Accept the challenge and embrace the opportunity at hand.
~ Have the courage to believe in yourself. Have the guts to try.~ Always take the shot. Do your best and expect the best.

Poise
Stay focused on doing what you need to do.

Passion
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Passion is all about having an enthusiasm for what you are doing, and a desire to accomplish what you
are pursuing. It is about taking an upbeat approach to a given task. It means having a love for what you
are doing, enjoying the opportunity to be doing what you are doing, and striving to do everything to thevery best of your ability. Having passion means giving your fullest and best effort to the task at hand — because what you are doing has meaning to you.

Determination
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Determination means finding a way to finish the task at hand, and to accomplish the mission that you
have planned. Determination means persisting and persevering until the last. It means doing what needs
to be done in order to get the job done. It means finding a way to win. It means finding a way to succeed.Determination is the will of a man in action. It is the intestinal fortitude of a man on full display. Living
with determination means having the will to begin, the heart to continue, and the toughness to fight until
you achieve your objective. Always remember this one fact: You measure the strength of a man not by
his physical prowess, but rather, by the strength of his determination.

Competitive Greatness
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Competitive Greatness is the culmination of many attitudes, traits, behaviors, and habits — all aimed at
working toward and reaching your absolute full potential in every regard. Competitive Greatness also is
the result of all the hard work, commitment, and determination that comes with a driving desire to do thebest, to be the best, and to be the most deserving of victory and success. It comes from more than the
desire to simply win on occasion; it comes from the desire — and the corresponding work ethic — to win
every single time that you compete. It comes from more than the desire to simply be good; it comes
from the desire to be great. It comes from more than the desire to just succeed; it comes from the desire
to dominate. Competitive Greatness is the culmination of these things. It is the crowning achievement of
every intention and every action to be the absolute best, to achieve success, and to attain excellence._____________________________________________________________________________________
Important Greatness Quotes
“It is a reality of life that men are competitive, and the most competitive gamesDraw the most competitive men. That's why they are there — to compete. They know the rules,
They get in the game, and they know the objective. And the objective is to win — fairly, squarely,
By the rules —but to win.” ~ Vince Lombardi
“Compete to be a good student, compete to be a good friend, compete to be a good father, and compete to be a good husband. Make conscious choices about what you compete at,
and always compete to do your best at whatever that is.” ~ Pete Carroll
“No one is perfect, but making the effort to be perfect…
is what life is all about.” ~ Vince Lombardi
“It is the nature of man to rise to greatness
If greatness is expected of him.”~ John Steinbeck ~
Important Greatness Points
~ Make the most of your talents and abilities.
If you are capable of greatness, then don’t settle for anything less.
~ Good teams play to win. But Great Teams play to Dominate.
~ Don’t merely go through the motions— in sports or in life.
~ Get in the game. Play the best that you can.
~ Play not only to win: play to dominate.~ Progress is driven by competition.
~ Society is built by winners.
~ It is competitiveness —
the Drive to Win — that leads to progress.
“Without winners, there would be no civilization.”~ Woody Hayes ~

Sound judgment and moral courage, depth of thought and quality of action, truth and wisdom, fairness and right-conduct... these are the things that determine a man's destiny.
