Tony Hague at Image &Design was required to design aweekend retreat for a busyprofessional. The house neededto be used for weekend visits orlonger stays and was toaccommodate the owner and hisextended family. Facilities tocope with the possibility of anelderly resident as well as twoseparate living areas were to bepart of the design.

The house is divided intoseparate areas. The entry leadsto a void and a Y shapedstaircase leads to each of theseareas. One way leads to thegranny flat, garage andbedroom 2. The second areahouses the master bedroom andliving area. Water and marinaviews to the north became afocal point for the narrow blockand the living room and masterbedroom make the most ofthese views.

The master bedroom is set on amezzanine level, while the living

area is double height, creating afeeling of increased space andopenness. This two storey livingarea opens onto the back patio.Standard glazing and doorswere used in this area, withlouvers carefully placed to allowthe breeze through while notaffecting the views. The masterbedroom is open to the livingarea below, meaning that theexpansive views of the water arealso visible from the bedroom.

The second area allows for twofamilies to stay and share thehouse while maintaining relativeprivacy. When one family isstaying in the house, they canspread out and use the wholehouse. Separate entry to eacharea enhances the privacy ofeach part of the house.

The end result is a retreat thatthe client loves: an oasis thatmaintains the modernconveniences while being farremoved from the client's hecticcity lifestyle.

Is the steel in your roof BCA compliant?

This is the question that could make or break you. If you’re using

imported steel, or it’s being substituted without your knowledge,

please be aware of the facts. And the serious risks.

Where the BCA calls for AS1397:2001 compliance in construction,

products that are made to foreign standards may not automatically

meet the “deemed to satisfy” requirements of the BCA.

Steel made by BlueScope Steel is guaranteed to be 100% compliant.
