The Legend of the Leprechaun By Grace O’Brien

What is a leprechaun? A leprechaun is a fairy that is about the size of a three year old. It's normally

described as a little bearded man who wears a green suit. According to stories, the leprechaun is a shoe maker

who spends most of the day fixing shoes. Some people say when a leprechaun is near you can hear the tap, tap,

tap of their hammer on the shoes.

These little men are very mischievous and love to play tricks on innocent people.

The leprechaun is a mythical creature, but is thought to be seen in the 700’s. The story of the leprechaun

has been passed down for generations. According to legend, the leprechaun has to give his pot of gold to anyone

who finds him and catches him. But he won’t let his treasure go without a fight. Apparently, if he can make a

person look away for just a second, he will be off into the forest. In a small Irish town the Leprechaun is an

The History of St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated on March 17th yearly.

The holiday is the anniversary of Saint Patrick's death. He died

in the fifth century. The Irish have observed this day as a

religious holiday for over 1,000 years.

Saint Patrick was born in Roman Britain in the fifth

century. At the age of 16 he was kidnapped and brought to

Ireland to be a slave. He later escaped but then returned to

Ireland. In the centuries following his death, his life became

more ingrained in the Irish culture.

The first parade held in Saint Patrick's honor was in the

United States and not Ireland. On March 17th, 1,762 Irish

soldiers serving in the English army marched through the

streets of New York City. With Their music and the parade it

helped them reconnect with their Irish roots.

Shamrock Shake Recipe

We all love shamrock shakes and here’s a good recipe. First get all your ingredients out and

ready. Then blend the ice cream, milk, mint extract and food coloring until smooth. Then

drizzle chocolate syrup around the inside two tall glasses, pour the shake into the glasses. Top

with whipped cream and green decorator sugar.

Yummy, it’s ready to drink!

Ingredients

2 cups of vanilla ice cream

1 ¼ cups of milk

¼ teaspoon of mint extract or more to taste

9 drops of green food coloring

2 tablespoons of chocolate syrup or to taste (optional)

2 tablespoons of whipped cream or to taste (optional)

½ teaspoon of green decorating sugar or to taste (optional)

The Fundamentals of an Average Middle Schooler

Middle school, the bridge between Elementary and High school. These are the three years that we start to mature, but some of us mature much slower. Boys in elementary school pester girls all the time, but in middle school things are way less innocent. This is the time when we discover the world, including more sensitive subjects.

Based on the current situation I felt obliged to write this article. No shad, just facts.

As a girl, I can’t walk down the hallway without being shouted at. It’s common thing throughout the school. When it’s not me, I see the same exact thing happening to other girls. Recently I was approached by someone on the late bus, as I was walking to the back he stopped me and said “Hey, beautiful.” It feels good to be called beautiful, but not in that context. If you’re complemented by someone you know, it is taken well and is much appreciated, but when a random person that you've never seen before says it in a weird suggestive way, it comes off as creepy. Another time I was walking to sports practice at the high school, when I noticed a group of boys walking behind me. At first, I thought nothing of it until they started yelling that I was “cute and that we should go out sometime.” The rest of what they said is too inappropriate to mention. I did what I had to and ran. It infuriated me that they thought they could talk to me that way, let alone any girl. Many things have happened to me like this before. I just want to feel safe and comfortable when I go to school. I don’t want to have to worry about people like that. So guys, this is my message to you. Next time you feel like saying something to a girl that you know would make them uncomfortable, or yelling to them down the hallway. Don’t, because it’s not okay.

The Inspirational Women Series

Wilma Rudolph

Wilma Rudolph was born on June 23, 1940. When she was four she contracted Polio. Her dream was to

be on the track team. With the help of her mother, she eventually regained strength to be on the 7th grade

basketball team. In 1956, her coach started a track team and Wilma begins to win races. Wilma Rudolph eventually made it to the 1956, Summer Olympics in Australia. Her team won bronze

for track. In 1960, she went again to the Olympics in Rome and won three gold medals. She got married to

Robert Eldridge and had three children. In 1994, she is voted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame and into the

National Women's Hall of Fame. She died from brain cancer at age 54. Wilma Rudolph is an inspiration to

others because she was persistent and never gave up on her dreams, despite her struggles.

In 1971, the Auto Train Corporation started operations on the Seaboard Coast Line and the Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac Railroad. The Auto Train was a passenger service that carried passengers’ cars with them and ran from Lorton, Virginia (Washington D.C.) to Sanford, Florida (Orlando). The Consist* included 16 General Electric U36B (Universal Series, 3600 horsepower with Blomberg style trucks (picture below). * a set of railroad vehicles forming a complete train

In 1974, the Auto Train Corporation expanded its route from Sanford to Louisville, Kentucky on the Louisville & Nashville Railroad. Operations ceased in 1981. In 1982, the National Railway Passenger Corporation also known as Amtrak bought the dying railroad and kept the concept of it alive. Today, Amtrak still operates the Auto Train, but uses different equipment. P42s replace U36Bs, Superliners replace the passenger cars, Dash 8 locomotives replace the switchers, and End of Train devices replace cabooses.

Facts:

The Auto Train is the longest train in North America.

It uses 40 railroad cars

It travels 855 miles in 18 hours and overnight.

If you want to travel on Auto Train, here are a few things that you should know. Car arrival starts at 11:30 am and ends at 2 pm. If you want to get to Lorton on time, 4 am is the best time to leave Hamburg. You’ll have to set up any train bags after the crew member drives your car aboard. It stays aboard until it arrives at the terminal. There are technically 2 Auto trains; one in Sanford and one in Lorton. They depart their terminals at 4 pm and meet in Florence, SC at midnight for locomotive refueling and crew changes. They arrive at 9 am at the other terminal. The Auto Trains have three dinner times 5, 7, and 9 pm. They usually play a movie at 9 pm, but that will depend on the poster in the terminal. In the morning, you are able to choose from continental breakfast items after a long rest. One thing to be aware of, is the passing of other trains. You can get spooked by passing trains, so be prepared. There are 2 ways of sleeping on the train, the sleeper car, or the coach car. The coach car is like sleeping on an airplane, surrounded by people sleeping up right. The sleeper car gives you 2 room options, the family room and the small compartment. The family room can fit about 6-8 sleeping people. The small compartment can fit only 2 sleeping people. The sleeper car crew also sets up beds from seats while you’re eating dinner. After you arrive at your destination, you get off and the crew unloads the cars. They call your number with the make of your car. For example, ADF 1=A grey 2019 Ford F150 from New York. Auto Trains are a great way to travel to a destination and not have to rent a car to get around. Try it! An enjoyable trip aboard a train to see the countryside of the U.S.A.

Movie review

Captain Marvel Review

Before I saw the film- When this movie was announced, I was ok with the idea. I

don't read the comics but I had confidence in it. The teaser trailer was interesting, and the second trailer was awesome, but all the TV spots were worrisome. However, I still had confidence in it

Plot- This is one of the problems with this movie. The plot is sloppy and hard to follow. I will try to tell it. Carol Danvers is living on a planet with heroes called Cree warriors. She has memory losses after she crashes on Earth. She doesn't know where she came from. Carol teams up with a young Nick Fury to find the shape shifting aliens called Skrulls, while she tries to get home. CGI- In the final battle, the CGI was a little wonky but it is great in the other fight scenes. The green on the Skrulls looks like makeup. Maybe it was, but if it was CGI, it was awesome. The weapons the Cree used were fantastic.

Acting- This movie has amazing actors and actresses like Brie Larson and Samuel L Jackson. The acting has never been a problem in Marvel movies and this no different. Everyone does a great job.

Music- I love the heroic music in this movie. It really plays out well. The intense music during the space battle was memorable.

Passing- I did say the plot is a mess, but the passing is not bad. It’s really smooth throughout and that is what you want in movies. There were some parts that felt a little rushed but it was nice passing.

Verdict- If you’re not a fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you may not enjoy this movie. However, if you are a fan of it you will like it. It’s a fun, superhero movie that may have a debatable plot, but the action scenes are worth it. I would check it out if I were you. This movie gets an 8/10, which is great!

You walk up to the locker and extract from your pocket, 2 paper clips. Feeling foolish, you jam the paper clips into the keyhole and wiggle them around. Nothing happens. You try again and again and again. Then, the lock slides open producing a beautiful, delicate metal click. You swing open the door of the locker to find that you are looking into a whole other world. Much more advanced than Earth itself. You draw closer and you hear a voice in your head, “Come home,” the voice calls. “Come home,” the voice calls again. Behind you, janitor’s footsteps are approaching, coming closer and closer by the second. “Jump!” calls the voice, “…this might be your last chance!”

What do you do?

The Halloween of 1960 By A.J Golden

It was midnight, officially Halloween of 1960. I hear a noise in the

kitchen. My body stiffens. I know my family laid silently asleep in their

rooms. Our dogs are in the front yard tied to a tree on their chains.

I go out of my room to check. But not a single thing is there.

Suddenly, I felt a chill up my back. I was terrified. I slowly turned around

back towards my room. But nothing is there behind me. I turn back around

to the kitchen and there it was; the monster or ghost or whatever this

creature was.

I screamed but no noise came out of my mouth. Then, the creature

flew through me, and I fell on the floor. I was paralyzed. I don't remember

anything after that.

But from that day on, it came every midnight on each Halloween for

5 very long years. One Halloween, as I waited for a noise, nothing

happened. It was silent. As I closed my eyes, something hovered over me

and swung an axe at me. I died.

From that day forward, I haunted that house, wishing I had never

woken up that Halloween night in 1960.

The moment he said that a fairy popped out of the trees above. She was dressed in a black

Zen, baggy shirt and gray pants and a light gray skirt with a black choker as well. As for her

face, she had almost purple eyes, and golden brown hair in pigtails. She spoke in such crazy but

sweet words and said…

H-Hello, my name is Mystic. I saw you running and struggling to carry that girl and I

could just use some of my fairy magic and she could also fly and you too of course.

Him- How can I trust you?

Mystic-Ummm I don’t know but please. I’ve been cast out from my village for using dark

magic to heal my love. And just please, I need to do a fairy worthy thing to get back into the

village. Please.

Him- Ok. I’ll just tell Fona. Do you need any herbs or?

Mystic- No not really, just salt.

Him- We will pass a salt lake soon. That’s also one of our rest stops. You can collect it there.

Mystic- Ok.

Him- Let’s head out. C’mon Fona and Mystic.

Fona- Yes, I am coming

Mystic- Please do come with me…

Chapter 5

Mr. Carnright and His Son- Part 2

“Lui, please show our guests their rooms,” said Mr. Carnright. We went down the

hallway which had three doors on each side and the door on the end where we came in. When

we came in, I never noticed the tunnel square-shaped tube inclining to the second floor. But the

odd thing about it was that it had no door! Lui walked right through it without blinking an eye!

As being the oldest, I followed up the rear. When I went through the wall, I didn’t feel a thing!

Magic I thought! I always believed in magic! Inside there were a flight of stairs with a door that

was different from all the other doors in the house. I wonder where that led to.

At the end of the passage there was another wall. But Lui passed through it like nothing

was there, so we all did the same. Upstairs, there were three doors on each side and one door at

each end. Almost an exact replica of downstairs! Lui led us to the one door at the end of the

hallway and opened it.

In the room, there was a four-poster queen bed. There was a nightstand next to the bed, a

wooden desk with a chair, and a dresser. The green curtains were drawn back, and the bed was

neatly made.

“Okay, Alissa is staying here,” Emile said almost immediately. Since the only thing I had

to unpack was the book, I took it out and put it on the nightstand. Surprisingly in my satchel

were my clothes! I decided to keep them in there just in case we had to suddenly go somewhere.

It was the most amazing room I had ever laid eyes on. Now, since the boys did not let me

into their room, Emile will now in his own words describe the room.

“Okay, it was very awesome and I am not being sarcastic. Back to you Alissa.”

Wow, just wow! What an amazing sentence. So full of detail. I bet it would have gotten

published.

“My room is across from your brother’s room. My parent’s room is at the other end of the

hallway. The balcony is next to the linen closet. Any questions?” explained Lui.

Teen Meta-human

Part 2

Who is Elly? Well, Elly is well, WAS my best friend. We both met in preschool. At the time, I didn't know that I even had powers. Neither did she. It all started in the 4th grade. We were playing with her Barbie dolls. We got into an argument. I'll invite you into that historical moment.

Alex (me) - But I want the Malibu Barbie! Elly- But it’s mine! Alex- I don't care! You can have the disco Barbie. Elly- But i don't WANT the disco Barbie! Alex- Well too bad, so sad

Elly yanks the doll out of Alex’s hand. Then, Alex begins to cry and stomp her feet. Alex- Give Me The DOLLLLLLLLLL! Icicles fly from her hands. Shooting in every direction. They slowly begin to cover the house in ice. Once Alex stops her hissy fit, she looked around to see what she had done. Elly just stood there in awe. An hour later The cops arrive at Elly’s home

Alex- I DIDN'T MEAN TOO. PLEASE! I WANT MY MOMMY. She says while balling

Officer Will- I know you didn't, Sweetie. But you have to go away. You will be able to see your mother one last time. Alex- One last time?? I want to ALWAYS see her! She continues to cry. Alex- Where am I going??

Officer Will- You are going to a nice hospital. The doctors will take care of you while you are there. I promise you will be safe there. Alex- ...okay she whispers. Well that officer was lying. The people who worked there treated me like I was nothing. It isn't a hospital. I don't know WHAT it is and I’ve been here 7 years. I just wish I would have let Elly have her stupid doll. I wouldn't be in this mess!

The unofficial novel of

SKYRIM

One long time ago in a land far away, a child was born. His name was

Archer. He was adopted by the McLaughlin’s. His parents were Bridget

and Marc. They were strict but fun. Archer had three siblings named Paul,

Miles, and Maddie. Archer had gotten bored of the life at home. He longed

for adventure, so he left a note saying,

“To my family, I would love to stay and drink tea all day, but I’ve always

longed for adventure. I have gone to the elder blacksmith. I’ll write.” -

Archer

Now, even though Archer had ‘a born to explore attitude,’ he still had his

fears. He realized this a bit too late armed with only a knife and a bow and

arrows.

SPORTS…

UB Bull’s Basketball

The men finished the season 28-3, while the women finished 20-9. The men

and women played some very challenging teams. The men won games against West Virginia

99-94 and a game against Syracuse their first win ever in history against the Orangeman. The

women held the number 6 seed Stanford to only 62 points. Though going into the MAC

Tournament, the men are at #1 seed but the women are at the #4 seed.

Unfortunately, both men and women’s teams are going to lose a lot of players

this year. The seniors on the men's team possibly moving to the NBA are CJ Massenburg,

Jeremy Harris, Nick Perkins, Mantell McRae, and Dontay Caruthers. The women’s team is

going to lose Courtney Wilkins, Autumn Jones, Ayoleka Sodade, Cierra Dillard, and Brittany

Morrison.

Last year both men and women made the March madness brackets. The men’s

team only got to the 2nd round last year by beating Arizona. Then, they lost to Kentucky in the

next round. However, the women got all the way to the SWEET 16! They beat South Florida

and Florida State and finally they lost to South Carolina. So there is very high hope for both

teams this post season and I hope they go very far.

Manny Machado signed a Ten year/$300 Million contract with San Diego. Philadelphia really got better this offseason, adding players like J.T Realmuto and Jean Segura, and most of all Bryce Harper. Philly looks to be a favorite in the N.L East this year.

The yanks outfield is phenomenal, with players like Judge, Gardner, Stanton, Hicks, and Frazier the list goes on and on. Unfortunately for the Yankees you can only start 3 in the outfield.

2. Boston Red Sox

The Red Sox don’t have as much power as the Yankees do, but are still a great team, with a great pitching staff.
