Beginning with Rosh Hashanah, we imagine that God is determining the destiny of each of us in the coming year. Our tradition teaches that our destiny is written on Rosh Hashanah and sealed on Yom Kippur for most of us. The wholly Righteous among us are sealed for good and blessing immediately on Rosh Hashanah, the wicked among us are sealed for ill. Most of us are neither wholly righteous nor totally wicked, and then the ten days are a gift to us to attempt to influence our destiny. Our tradition also teaches that we cannot expect God to forgive our misdeeds on Yom Kippur unless we have already sought and given forgiveness from our fellow human beings. So, the task upon us is to determine who we may have wronged and make amends, if possible, prior to Yom Kippur. As I believe I have taught on more than one occasion, the Jewish conception of wrongdoing, both acts of commission and acts of omission, cannot be adequately conveyed by the English term, sin. In fact, there is no Hebrew term that is exactly equivalent to the word sin. The term we will encounter most frequently in our Yamim Noraim liturgy is Chayt, which means to miss the mark, as an arrow shot at a target might miss the bull’s eye. The implication is that there is some ideal or standard of conduct that we either failed to achieve or completely ignored. Should we feel guilty about this? Yes, but to a limited extent; only enough to motivate us to do better. Very few human beings can ever be completely blameless; after all we are human not divine beings. Perfection is beyond our capabilities. Improvement, on the other hand, is entirely within our power. Is our failure to live up to the ideals of our tradition a moral failing? No. Is it a defect of our character? No. It simply reflects the human condition - we are going to make mistakes. Even with the best of intentions, sometimes the results of our actions will be harmful to others. Our tradition expects us to recognize and accept our mistakes, apologize to those we have hurt in some way, and resolve to do better the next time. Oh, and by the way, some of our most grievous misdeeds are committed against ourselves! This is why we Jews do not make new year resolutions. They are too hard to keep and why carry any guilt on their account? Based on the foregoing, we can conclude that none of us are sinners; we are simply flawed human beings who will always struggle to hit the mark. Most of the continued on page 4]

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

A truly hectic Autumn is upon us. Chalk it up to poor planning, or an overly ambitious group of volunteers (including myself at the top of that list), but regardless it’s exhausting. We said goodbye to summer with another fabulous Men’s Club Barbeque. Once again, there was a great turnout, with perfect weather. We all enjoyed each other’s company and the food from Doni at Grapevine Events. Thank you so much to Men’s Club, and all those volunteers who made that day a success. On writing this, we are approaching Selichot which has a last minute reprogramming to run at Congregation Shaaray Shalom (instead of elsewhere) with a smaller group of participating shuls. The very next day is the Journal Celebration! We will come back to that in a few…a week after the journal is Rosh Hashanah, quickly followed by Yom Kippur, Sukkot, and Simchat Torah (as usual). Then, on November 3rd, there is Sisterhood Brunch, followed by Veterans’ Shabbat on November 9th and Kristallnacht (tentatively) also on November 9th! Let’s not forget that the day after that is November 10th, with our annual Concert! Is your head spinning yet? Mine is… Back to the Journal. A few years ago, Helene Fastman told me (then in my first year as 1st Vice President), that fundraising was my domain, and that the Journal is at the top of the list. I told her point blank that if she wants the Journal to die, she will entrust it to me: she chuckled (I think she truly thought I was kidding). While I was able to pull it off the first year with her assistance, thereafter it didn’t happen. Those that know me, know there is a lot that

I can do, but functions like the Journal are not on the list: it’s just not one of my strengths. I did try to pull it off again, but failed. Helene (and Lew, our Treasurer) were truly disappointed. Helene vowed to bring back the Journal, once she was done as President and could recuperate. Here we are, Fall 2019, and the Journal is at our doorstep. Helene and Lew have worked extremely hard to put this together. To those who aren’t involved, it might just seem like putting together a luncheon with food by the caterer, but there is so much that goes on in advance to make it a success. There is an extraordinary amount of preparation for the advertisers and coordinating that part of the fundraising. Then there is the actual event: food, guests, and entertainment. Oh, and let’s not forget the honorees! This year we have a group of outstanding women who are being honored, who didn’t want a fuss to be made over them! But of course, Helene Fastman is not Wonder Woman, but just a dedicated, caring, and hard working woman. As such, she had to also enlist an army of volunteers to assist in making this year’s Journal a success (and yes, even more coordination required!). I will leave the thanking of the Journal volunteers to Helene and Lew during the event. I hope you, as a member of our Congregation, enjoy the fruits of the labor of all our volunteers. We are blessed to have such wonderful people in our community. Alan Shamoun

THANK YOU I wish to thank all who made the effort to come to a 6:30 morning minyan so that I could say Kaddish for my father, Roman Weingarten, z.l. on his 6th Yarhzeit.

Bernice Slutzman

*****************************

My heartfelt thanks to Helene and Lew for choosing me as one of the honorees for the Journal’s 2019 event. It was a lovely day and your hard work is appreciated. I applaud Sylvia, Bernice, Jan and Michelle for their commitment to our synagogue.

The Rabbi's Discretionary Fund Most synagogue funds are used for the benefit of the synagogue, but the Rabbi's Discretionary Fund in par-ticular, is for the benefit of people in need in the community. Unfortunately, as the needs have increased, con-tributions to the Fund have decreased. Keep making the contributions that you have, but if you are able to give something additional for this Fund, please do. All donors are acknowledged, both with a card and in the Bulletin, unless you wish your donation to be anonymous. Thanks and best wishes.

IT’S TISHREI! Tra la, it’s here the lucky month of Tishrei. That lovely month when everyone says hyster’cly “OY VEY!” [forgive me Mr. Hammerstein] Of all the months in our 5780 calendar year, Tishrei is the most jam packed with holidays. Rosh Hashanah sees us getting together with family and close friends following services to enjoy good food and conversation. Here’s where the first “oy vey” comes in. Good food. Does it get to the table by magic? Does the lady of the house twitch her nose ala Samantha of Bewitched and presto everything is done? Don’t think so. Short of having to change everything over as with Pesach, much work is involved in preparations. Ten days later we have Yom Kippur. No prep here you might say. Wrongo! Ever heard of the break-fast? Very few break the fast alone, so someone is doing work to make it again a festive gathering. Oy vey number 2. Think we’re done. Think again! Following on the heels of Yom Kippur is Sukkot. That beautiful hut doesn’t erect itself ya know. The structure must be put together and decorated so it is usually a family affair. But it doesn’t stop there. Following tradition, guests are invited to eat meals in the succah. Again meal preparation on a grand scale commences. Oy vey number 3. We now some to Shemini Atzeret. Okay, no entertaining usually happens here. Next day, Simchat Torah, a day for celebrating the completion of the reading of the scroll. With the conclusion of Simchat Torah we do not have any smahot until Kislev. [Poor Mar Cheshvan comes in between.] But wait............don’t you have to take the succah down?

Rabbi’s Message [continued from page 1] time, we will do alright. But this season demands honesty from us. If we think we may have hurt or wronged someone this past, we owe them an apology. And though I am the Rabbi, I also make mistakes, both of omission and commission, and I owe lots of apologies. If I have offended you in some way this past year, I apologize and beg your forgiveness. If I am aware of the offense, I promise to try to do better in the coming year. If each is able to do this, then we shall all be inscribed and sealed for good and for blessing in the coming year. A Happy, Healthy, Prosperous New Year to everyone.

Our Daily Minyan is in Need of Your Support Congregation Shaaray Shalom has a long history of supporting the many congregants who need to say Kaddish and observe yahrzeiten. Our constant pleas for participation sometimes work. We have a few new faces and some returning ones. All are welcome to spend a few minutes on Monday and Thursday mornings at 6:30 am and Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 8:30 am. This is another NO EXPERIENCE needed pro-gram and our clergy are always willing to help you learn and become more proficient at davening and maybe someday be a leader. We now conduct minyan services in memory and honor of David Weiss, -@'. We are looking to start a small list of those who can be on standby via TEXT messaging for any of the mornings. A group text would be sent only if we are missing #10 and if one person responds, the others would go on their way. It is a modern approach to the old fashioned apparatus on the wall and it can contact many people in a FLASH. Please contact Rich Selzer: 516 680 3710 / [email protected] or Leah Freeberg: 516 984-7782 / [email protected] to add your name to this list . Our minyan continues to be one of our strengths. Please help us continue it. SISTERHOOD

Here it is October already and we're in the middle of the holidays. Before we got here, when there is no

time for significant Sisterhood activities, we had some noteworthy happenings. Our opening meeting on September 11th was very well attended. We were treated to a talk by the charming Renee Kann Silver, author of And Yet I Still Loved France. Ms. Silver spoke of her book recalling her childhood in and out of France up to and during the Second World War. It was good to hear about a family that actually made it through the war and managed to come to America after it ended. Copies of her book are available and can be purchased (while supplies last) for $15.00. Checks can be made out to Sisterhood Congregation Shaaray Shalom. Call Rita Kaikow to order. Having read the book and hearing Renee.Silver speak, I personally recommend it. On September 22nd our women were celebrated at the annual synagogue Journal. Congratulations to them. They not only represent Congregation Shaaray Shalom, but they are active members. Yasher Koach to Sylvia, Bernice, Jan, Fran and Michele. You make us so proud. Coming up -- finally, something in October -- another Pizza and Bingo/Pokeno Night. Prepare to come on October 28th and play Pokeno and Bingo (move over Mah Jongg). A final note. Even if you missed the deadline for the High Holy Days, you can still be a part of our Holiday Greetings published for two more holidays in the Bulletin. Same price, but your friends will appreciate your good wishes. Helene

MEN’S CLUB ON THE MOVE Men's club was happy to sponsor our annual BBQ in the Park For those of you who count, this is over our 20th year and we keep going strong . There were forty plus participants who enjoyed a great day in the sun with our extended congregation family The food was scrumptious, not just good, and except for the grilled salami it was very healthy with hot dogs, hamburgers and Richie’s famous steamed grilled veggies. What could be better? We thank our committee chairmen Joe Richmond and Rich Selzer and the extended staff of Jacques Hakim and Jeff Shostak and of course the many additional volunteers who pitched in all afternoon to make sure the event went on without a hitch. We look forward to next year. And very special thanks to Doni, the caterer, for all he does for us and of course George who, with his big smile, just makes us all feel good as he runs around helping in every possible way. Be prepared, we are getting ready for our annual movie and luncheon in December and some addi-tional programs all year. Thank you

Greetings from the Ritual Committee  At the September 5th Ritual Committee meeting the Rabbi reported that the venue for Selichot services had been changed from Temple Bnei Shalom Beth David in Rockville Centre to Congregation Shaaray Shalom. Bnei Shalom Beth David changed the scope of the programming with none of the other congregations participating resulting in the other shuls coming to CSS. We had a lengthy discussion of the recent bris that the caterer’s client had in our Shul on Shabbat of August 24th. As a result of the large number of guests which attended the bris, CSS had to move its Shabbat service from the sanctuary to the Moseson Chapel. The committee voted and passed a resolution to recommend to the Board that the caterer NOT be allowed to begin an affair before 12:00 noon and those guests should NOT arrive prior to that time. The Rabbi and Arbie Orentstein suggested to the committee that Torah reading be handled in house from Shabbat September 28th through October 19th. Jeff Smith discussed this with Jeff Beris, our Torah reader. Mr. Beris indicated that not reading Torah for four Shabbatot would be a hardship. As a result of our discussion, Mr. Beris agreed to take off the Shabbatot of October 12th and 19th. The Rabbi approved having Gary Glick of the Merrick Chapter of the Jewish War Veterans deliver the D’var Torah on Veterans’ Day Shabbat. If you have not sent in your cards requesting the honor of opening the Ark during the holidays, it was due August 2, all honors had been distributed. You should have received a letter by now, indicating the day and time of the honors for those that responded. The committee thanks all the volunteers which helped with services during the past month.

Journal 2019

On September 22, 2019 at five pm the long awaited Journal Luncheon took place after months of hard work by the committee under the co-chairmanship of Helene Fastman and Lew Stein. Their hard work paid off as the Journal came up to the hopes of the committee. The event itself, catered by Grapevine events, proved to be worth the wait. Guests in attendance were served with hot hors d’oeuvres in the Tree of Life Room. Of course there was wine, mimosas and soft drinks available at the bar too. Once in the ballroom guests enjoyed music provided by Stu Waters on keyboard. His talent is truly remarkable. Everything got underway with the singing of the Star Bangled Banner and Hatikvah by Helene followed by motzi conducted by Rabbi Vernon. Each of the five honorees were introduced with song parodies by Helene and brief bios read by Lew. The women were then called up to accept citations from County Executive Laura Curran and proclamations State Senator Todd Kaminsky. Not to stop there, but also included in their swag bags were books of a most appropriate nature: Typically Jewish by Nancy Kalikow Maxwell and Great Jewish Women by Elinor Slater and Robert Slater. Since the book was already published before our event, I guess we’ll have to wait until the next edition to find the pictures and stories of our five ladies!
