2 THE BULLETIN SEPT. 2012

Jim Woolley, principal of Forest Heights Collegiate Institute in Kitchener, enters his 3rd year as a member of the OFSAA Executive Council and his first in the role of president. He replaces outgoing president Lynn Kelman.

Jim has held many different roles in school sport including WCSSAA principal representative, WCSSAA president, CWOSSA director, CWOSSA principal representative, and a member/chair of the OFSAA Board of Reference - Transfers. He also took on the role of OFSAA track and field convenor in 1994.

We look forward to the knowledge and insight that Jim brings with him as his expertise in school sport will be an invaluable asset to OFSAA going forward.

It is an honour and a privilege to serve as OFSAA President over the next two years. I would like to acknowledge and thank past President Martin Ritsma and President Lynn Kelman for their guidance and advice during my two years as Vice President.

I have enjoyed my previous involvement at OFSAA as chair of the transfer committee as well as my involvement at the local level with CWOSSA and WCSSAA. I look forward to working with the OFSAA staff and association members.

“Faster, Higher, Stronger” is the Olympic motto and, for seventeen days, during the summer we were able to watch athletes from Canada and the restoftheworldstrivetofulfillthismottoinawidevarietyofsports.Wesawathletes who have trained for years in preparation for the Olympic Games achieve their goals while others fell short and experienced disappointment. In the words of Olympic founder Pierre de Courbertin, “The most important thingisnottowinbuttotakepart.”Wesawthisreflectedmanytimesduringthe Games.

De Courbertin’s statement also encapsulates what OFSAA sees as its role in high school sports. OFSAA’s aims and objectives are: to support the educational value of school sport, to provide incentives for students to participate in interschool sport, to promote fair play and equal opportunities for all athletes, and to provide services for all participants involved in high school sport. It is with great pride as President of OFSAA that I have the opportunity to work with other leaders in high school sport to ensure that OFSAA’s aims and objectives arefulfilledthroughouttheprovince.

I would like to recognize and heartily thank all the volunteers who have made high school sport a reality for many student-athletes. Your time and commitment have always been appreciated by OFSAA and your role is vital in achieving OFSAA’s goals.

I look forward to working with everyone associated with high school sport and to working together to meet the challenges that the next two years may bring.

We’d like to introduce you to Shawn MacDonald, OFSAA’s new communications coordinator. Shawn will manage all our communication vehicles including the OFSAA website, social media, publications, and media relations. He joins us after most recently working as sports information director at Queen’s University, and prior to that he served as the marketing and communications representative for the Prince

Albert Raiders of the Western Hockey League.

Shawn attended Centennial Collegiate and Vocational Institute in Guelph where he played for the school’s baseball team. At the post-secondary level, Shawn is a graduate of Laurentian University (Honours Bachelor of Commerce, Sports Administration) and Mohawk College (Public Relations).

Shawn is excited to have the opportunity to work in educational athletics and to be part of the OFSAA team. He may be reached at [email protected] or (416) 426-7437.

Welcome Shawn MacDonald!

Encourage recently retired teacher-coaches to join the OFSAA Alumni Association to keep in touch with their peers. Donations to the scholarship fund provide annual scholarships for students from around the province who pursue post-secondary education in a Canadian institution.

This year’s Alumni golf tournament was held on June 25th and brought together alumni for a fun day and BBQ. Our winning foursome paired two CWOSSA retirees, Barry Mutrie and Bill Lord, with two Scarborough retirees, Joan Crosina and Paul Francis. Cecilia Carter-Smith, a rookie three years ago, is now a seasoned golf veteran and walked away with the ladies’ longest drive. Congrats Cec! Thanks to all who participated.

Members receive copies of the OFSAA Bulletin and newsletters. Watch the website for news on alumni members, upcoming events, and for the membership application.

David Mann, COSSA

Soccer, basketball and rugby kept David busy during his years at Adam Scott Collegiate and Vocational Institute in Peterborough, and yet he still managed to obtain honours throughout high school. He also contributed to the school community by serving on the Student Council, the Anti-bullying Squad, and the Announcement Team.

David enjoyed every team he played on and learned the true value of being a team member and the hard work required by all to achieve team success. His interaction with his peers, his teammates, and staff was extremely positive and he served as a role model for the younger students.

In the fall David plans to attend Ryerson University to study television and radio. We wish him well in all his future endeavors. Congratulations!

OFSAA Boys’ A/AA Field Lacrosse Festival Peterborough June 5 - 6 2012

OFSAA returned to one of Canada’s lacrosse hotbeds in Peterborough. Convenor Randy Riel, who was set to retire at the end of the school year, was hoping to host a great OFSAA event and have his team capture the gold in front of their homefans.ThebeautifulfieldsatBeavermead Park played host to the festival, while also giving visiting teams a sample of the picturesque scenery found in Peterborough.

These two teams have met in the gold medal game three times previously with Hagersville HS claiming the gold each time. However, a home fan base might have given the Holy Cross CSS team the encouragement they would need. A hard fought game couldn’t be settled in regulationtimesendingbothteamsbackonthefieldforovertime. After exchanging goals, a late surge by Holy Cross CSS resulted in a game winning goal, awarding the host school with their second OFSAA Lacrosse gold medal.

Boys’ A/AA Rugby returned to the COSSA area, this time hosted by St. Mary’s SS in Cobourg. Convenors Darrell HancockandGregConwaywereontopoforganizingthischampionshipfromthefirstdayoftheschoolyear.Theirefforts did not go to waste as the organizing committee hosted a fantastic event which could only be topped by the great rugby performances that took place.

The hosts decided to kick the tournament off with a breakfast banquet in order to help set the tone for the event and make sure all the teenaged bodies were fuelled to compete. This also provided the venue for the presentation of the Leadership in School Sport Award, which was presented to Ray Heffernan of St. Mary’s SS. OFSAA Boys’ AAA/AAAA RugbyHamilton June 5 - 7, 2012

The great facilities at Mohawk Park in Hamilton played host to the Boys’ AAA/AAAA Rugby Championship. Duane Davis and his experienced committee from Cathedral HS did a fantastic job in ensuring a great experience for all athletes and coaches in attendance. This included a banquet dinner at Carman’s Banquet Hall where the participants were treated to a hearty meal in preparation for another day of competition. This year’s Leadership in School Sport Award was presented to Michael Curran of Streetsville SS (ROPSSAA). Michael has been a dedicated teacher-coach for high school rugby for over 10 years. His passion for rugby led him to create an intramural rugby 7’s league at his school which was so well received that other schools are following his model. Michael is better known as being a “rugby teacher” than a coach. He works hard to ensure his athletes are given the tools to make good decisions, onandoffthefield, andtostayclassyinbothwinsandlosses.

Coach Curran’s awards didn’t end at the banquet as his talented Streetsville SS

teamfoundtheirwayintothechampionshipfinal, andfollowing a lightning delay, defeated Fenelon Falls SS (COSSA) 14-5 to capture OFSAA gold.

While much of the province experienced varying degrees of rain, the athletes in Windsor were treated to sunshine and blue skies.

Fortunately, the OFSAA experienced staff at the Giovanni Caboto Club provided all the food teenage boys could eat. First time convenor Ryan Culhane of West Ferris SS looked like an OFSAA hosting veteran with the Boys’ AA Soccer Championship in beautiful North Bay. Using the new facilities at Steve Omischl Park, athletes were treated to both natural andturffieldsintheirattempttocaptureOFSAA gold. A highly contested set of pool games were featured throughout day one, followed by an evening banquet hosted at the Best Western Hotel and Conference Centre. Participants were fortunate to hear from guest speaker Brian Ashton, former Canadian National Member. The banquet also allowed for the presentation of the Leadership in School Sport Award, which was presented to convenor Ryan Culhane for his dedication to coaching at West Ferris SS. Ryan is always eager to get involved which is evident from his involvement in hosting both OFSAA Basketball and OFSAA Soccer Championships.

The gold medal game saw John McCrae SS (NCSSAA) defeat St. Andrew’s College (CISAA) to capture the 2012 Boys’ AA Championship. Congratulations to Mitchell Azevedo, Alexandru Dascalu, Brandon Guilmette, Haris Hadziresic, Deni Haque, Kyle Howe-Patterson, Jeff Newell, Kevin Pitre, Callum Ayre, Eliab Woldeyes, Julian

Also to be congratulated is the team from Arnprior DHS (EOSSAA) for being awarded the Team Sportsmanship Award. The organizing committee indicated that the team was polite, cheered on other teams once they were eliminated, and were excellent guests at the banquet. Thank you to those players and coaches.

Hamilton replaced Windsor this year as the city to be in for high school soccer. Convenors John Ivinac , Julie Perri, and Lora te Boekhorst and their organizing committee took on the challenge of hosting both the Girls’ and Boys’ Soccer Championships. However, given the experience of this committee they were able to make it look easy. Great weather was provided to kick-off the championship. However, dark clouds rolled in and lightning forced the re-scheduling of the last set of games.

This did not dampen any spirits as teams shifted their focus to the combined championship banquet, which put attendance around the 1000 person mark, no easy task to coordinate. None-the-less, once dinner was served therewaslittlewaitforstudentstofindtheirwaytothebuffet tables, which provided an incredible selection of options and ensured full stomachs. The Leadership in School Sport Award was presented to a very deserving Aldo D’Intino of Bishop Ryan CSS (GHAC) for his 37 years of coaching. Aldo has been dedicated to coaching footballandtrackandfieldathisschoolwithtremendoussuccess. He is an inspiring coach who has been known to leave a lasting impression on student-athletes.

The championship game took place under a cloudy and lightly raining sky but that did not dampen the energy of the players or fans as Holy Cross (YRAA) and RS McLaughlin C & VI (LOSSA) battled for the gold. Following a tightly played match, Holy Cross captured the AAA championship with a 2-1 win.

Congratulations to Luca Baldassarre, Philip Balke, Cristian Cavallini, Justin Mederios, Joe Orestano, Carlo Piccone, John Franco Vecchiarelli, Andrew Alonzi, Matthew Carnevale, Antoino D’Acunto, John-Paul Ennamorato, Antonio Damiano, Santino Damiano, Mathew Di Giuseppe, Joe Genova, Steve Graziotto,

Robert Malfara, David Rodiguez, Armin Zia, Matteo Amoroso and coaches Nick Del Principe, Christian Iafrate, and Antonio Finelli.

The team from Lakeshore CHS (SOSSA) also must be congratulated for receiving the Team Sportsmanship Award. The team and their coaches were role models to all teams in attendance, displaying acts of sportsmanship on and off thefield.

Brantford, the Tournament Capital of Ontario, lived up to its reputation with the strong community support showcased for the OFSAA Boys’ AAAA Soccer Championship. St. John’s College convenors Carmine Romano and Peter Pomponio worked tirelessly to ensure a great OFSAA experience. Thanks to some help from Mother Nature, the weather cooperated on day one of the championship as the rain held off until just after the last match was played. St. John’s College not only welcomed athletes to their city but also into the school itself as the championship banquet was held right in the host school. After ensuring the athletes were fed, special guest speaker Walter Gretzky welcomed the participants, shared stories, and posed for photos. The Leadership in School Sport Award was also presented to Kathy Howard of St. John’s College (CWOSSA) for her 20 years of coaching soccer and basketball. She experienced much success with many of the teams she coached including having her girls’ soccer team capture the BCSSA title 17 times. Kathy is a firmbelieverinstickingtoyourcommitments, whichsheemphasized to her players and is seen as a reason for her students’ success over the years.

Prior to the tournament, many thought the strong team from St. Edmond Campion (ROPSSAA) would repeat as

champions and once again they found their way into thefinalsagainstSt.Mary’sCSS(LOSSA).St.EdmondCampion proved too strong for St. Mary’s CSS with a 3-0 victory to capture OFSAA gold. Thank you to Scott Halladay and his organizing committee for puttingonafirstclassevent.Thestudentspickeduponthis positive atmosphere and used it to give their best in every game. Smithville District Christian H.S. was especially able to use this atmosphere, their talent, skill and hard work to capitalize and become gold medal winners over Villanova College. Congratulations to Smithville District Christian H.S. (SOSSA) team members; Tallia Bezemer, Cassandra DeBoer, Sarah Duck, Crystal Elmers, Jocelyn Klompmaker, Alanna Pot, Emily DeHaan, Veronica Slappendel, Micah Vermeer, Kristen Antonides, Ashley Buist, Caitlyn Duck, Morgan Schilstra, Shannon Bezemer, Monica Couperus, Natalie Dykstra, Kirsten Klompmaker, Ariana VandenDool, Alydia VanderKlippe, coach Carol Pot, and head coach David Wonder, for your gold medal win.

The 2012 OFSAA Girls’ AAA Championship was hosted for a second year in a row by John Ivinac and his experienced organizing committee in Hamilton. This year, he decided to also take on organizing the Boys’ AAA Soccer Championship as well. And, as expected, this veteran teamorganizedaflawlessevent. The weather tried again this year to get in the way of the games, but John and his team worked out a solution for all. Thank you to John and his organizing committee for their continued dedication to school sport.

Organizing committee member Julie Perri was honoured with the OFSAA Leadership in Sport Award. Julie has been deeply involved in soccer for all of her life and comes from a soccer family. She has taken this love and devotion to soccer and instilled it to her students. She is fiercelycommittedto“educationthroughschoolsport,”as shown by the fact that she was not only a committee member for this championship, but was on maternity leave and caring for her three young children, while coaching her own athletes.

Iona C.S.S. was determined to upset last year’s gold medal winners from E.S.P. Louis-Riel. It was a close match that came down to a 4-3 win in a shoot out; but Iona came out on top and crowned themselves the new champions of girls’ AAA soccer. Congratulations to Iona C.S.S. The OFSAA Team Sportsmanship Award was

given to St. Maximillian Kolbe C.H.S. (YRAA) for their exemplary respect for others and fair play. Congratulations to the coaches and athletes. Possibly they were inspired by the guest speaker, Olympic bronze medalist in women’s soccer, Kara Lang, who is an alumni of St. Thomas Aquinas C.S.S. in GHAC.
