THE BUOYS
Commander I want to thank the Nominating Committee and the membership for selecting and voting for
me to be the Commander for 2013-2014 Watch. I am proud to serve and I serve at the
pleasure of the membership. My goal is, as always, to promote safe boating through
education, civic contribution and good fraternity. I think on-the-water training (instructors will
need to be certified), a Squadron Emergency Response Assistance Team, Kayak and Canoe seminars, boating
instructions for the First Mates and seniors, should all be a Squadron initiative.
My other goals are to beautify Squadron Harbor and update and add capability to the Squadron’s Web Site.
Last December I asked Barry Wood to head up a Panel of members to recommend improvements to our
facility. At the last Exec Committee, Barry Wood briefed the Committee regarding a three Phase Plan that
would address the first floor. I will be asking Barry and his team now to outline specifics and costs as well as
where we might obtain funding in concert with the Planning Committee.
Our Web Site was developed quite a number of years ago using software that is out of date and unsupported
by Microsoft. Ray Wlodyka, SN, reports that our current software makes adding new features almost impossi-
ble. I am committed to address this very important Squadron need.
At our Annual Meeting, Helen Meyer made the motion that the Cape Coral Power Squadron’s name be change
to: Cape Coral Sail and Power Squadron, Inc.
Frey Meyer, SN, (Fred who received his 50th year Squadron member pin last year) seconded the motion.
When a vote was called, the motion was overwhelmingly passed. I believe this will significantly enhance our
public image in that we are a boating organization and welcome all.
We have come a long way since Marge and I joined the Squadron. A Kayaking/Cycling Group, Fishing Group,
a Weekend Boaters and a Scuba Diving Group have been added and now we will be adding a Sailing Group, all
with a common denominator of boating. Our Squadron, like many organizations, is made up of members who
pay their annual dues. But to be a real member means to become involved. Running our squadron takes a lot
of work and we are fortunate to have members who devote a lot of their time on behalf of our organization. If
everyone volunteered just a couple of hours a month, it would help to keep things running smoothly. A list of
committee chairs can be found at the front of the BUOYS and a calendar of meetings / events can be found at
the back. Please attend some of these meetings or contact a chairperson or contact me. There are numerous
ways that you can help.
I want to thank the following people for their service, who are stepping down from the Bridge: Norm Meshaw,
N, our Squadron Education Officer (SEO) and Lee Soltysiak, AP, our Exec Officer. Also leaving is Assistant
Treasurer Fred Van Slett, S. I’m certain they will continue to contribute their service in other ways and
appreciate their involvement.
I want to welcome P/C Mike Woodward, SN, as our next SEO, Lou Simmons as our next Admin Officer,
William Gouge as Assistant Treasurer and Ann Parsons as Assistant Secretary.
Safe boating,
Cdr. Warren Maciag, AP

WHOW!!
I can’t believe that I have been on the bridge for one full year. It’s really gone fast. It seems like only yesterday that Al Rubio asked me to consider being
part of this great organization. Please welcome Lou Simmons who will be the new Administrative Officer for 2013. As I look back over the past year, I must thank Barry Wood for becoming the Assistant
Administrative Officer. He has been a great help in organizing the many areas of responsibility that reported to the Administrative Officer. I would also like to express my sincere thanks to all
the great chairpersons that have run their groups. They sure made my job a lot easier. Now it’s on to my new responsibilities as your Executive Officer. I look forward to working
with my new staff and assisting Cdr Maciag in making this another great year for the Power Squadron.
The 2013 Vessel Inspection stickers have now been received and inspections requests are being handled. Remember, if you had your boat inspected last year, you need to have it done again
this year. Tell all your friends about this free service that we provide to the public.

I would like to thank the nominating committee and the membership for having the
confidence in me to serve as your administrative officer. I don’t anticipate any big changes since my predecessors have done a great job of managing the office. I encourage all members
to get involved with your squadron. I especially want our new members to be an intricate part of the organization. We can find a job for everyone. I encourage everyone to communicate with the bridge. We need your fresh
ideas.
A little about me: I was born in Baltimore, MD, and lived most of my life in the Annapolis area. I have owned a boat since I was 14. After high school I joined the United States Navy Submarine Service where I learned how to navigate onboard a submarine by compass.
After the Navy I worked for Westinghouse Aerospace. I was an integral part of design and development of television and radar space-bound systems. My 35-year career was rounded
out as a Program Manager of a successful multimillion-dollar special defense program. In 2001, I retired and my wife Anita and I moved to Cape Coral. We piloted our American Tug
34 down the Intracoastal Waterway from Annapolis. While in the Cape I have been a licensed yacht broker and helped my wife open the Cape Dog Bakery (now Cape Dog & Cat) 9 years
ago. We were members of the Royal Palm Yacht Club for a number of years and enjoyed cruising the West Coast. I was a Board Member, for MTOA, the largest trawler organization in
the world. I have attended the Cape Coral Citizens Academy and am C.E.R.T trained. Presently I am the Chairman of the Advisory Board of the SW Florida Veteran’s Foundation and Museum.
Eight years ago I joined the Power Squadron. I have been a chairman of member involvement
and PR committee. Recently I was the liaison to the Community Redevelopment Agency, where I was an appointed commissioner and vice chairman. The most satisfying accomplishment was when P/C Paul Clarcq and I decided the squadron
needed a Sea Scout ship. We shanghaied Bill Nelson to be the first skipper and the rest has been a great success.
Enough about me. It is time for us to all get to work and make this squadron not only the largest in the nation but also the best.
Lt/C Lou Simmons

THE BUOYS
Squadron Education Officer
In early 2005 I happily ended my term as Commander. Squadron Harbor had a new roof, 11 or
12 new air compressors, several new air handlers, a new kitchen and the interior looked like new all thanks to Hurricane Charlie (and a lot of work from many of the members of CCPS … at that time I took an oath that I was finished being on CCPS’ bridge. The lesson I learned from
this is never make promises to yourself about something you may not be able to keep years down the road. So here I am on CCPS Bridge as the Squadron Education Officer. I promise to
do everything I can to leave CCPS’ education program in at least as good a condition a year from now as it was when I inherited it from Lt/C Norm Meshank, N. The lifeblood of CCPS has been (for years) the boating course aka America’s Boating Course.
Thanks to the efforts of more members then I’ll even begin to mention here … for fear of not mentioning someone. Cape Coral still has the largest membership in all of USPS, some 460
members.
Currently we have only a handful of instructors for 11 advanced and elective courses and I can’t count how many seminars we have available to us. One of my goals this year is to find and develop new instructors for our courses and seminars. Please, if you have any background or
interest in any of our courses please contact me. Another is to encourage our members to take advantage of the courses available to them at very reasonable prices. To facilitate this I’ll be
scheduling the Instructor Development course. What’s Instructor Development? It trains you to think like an instructor. See next month’s Buoys for dates and times. Below is a list of the courses we have scheduled for the rest of this year … subject to change as
needed. In the past we conducted classes in the daytime. Let me know what times and days of the week work best for you and if we can come to a consensus between students, room
availability and instructors we’ll schedule courses when they work bestest for the mostest. Please let me know what your preferences are via email … mwoodward217@gmail … my memory is not what it once was and even if I write it down and put it in a safe place …
The office at Squadron Harbor is open Monday through Saturday from 0900 – 1200. Don’t be
bashful, rush down tomorrow morning and reserve a seat!

Kayaking Group January’s kayaking trip was to Lover’s Key State Park. The weather was perfect and the water was smooth. This indeed was one of the most delightful trips to date specifically due to the wildlife we encountered. Manatees greeted us and
then followed us through the waterway. A mother and baby manatee seemed particularly curious and came over to our kayaks to “check us out”. When we stopped in a small cove to eat our lunch, we had the most regal Great Blue Heron and a white Egret sitting on a tree branch watching over us. There were also several large manatees that stayed with us swimming under and around our kayaks. It was just a fabulous day in all respects.
By the time you are reading these we will have completed our February trip on a Moonlight Kayak down the Estero River with the Estero River Outfitters. We expect this will be a very different but pleasurable trip. Kayaking by
moonlight sounds relaxing, yet exciting. We will be sure to have our flashlights with us as parts of the river are very dark at night. If these trips sound like fun to you, please join us on one of our regularly scheduled trips on the last Saturday of the month and occasional “impromptu” trips when the conditions look good. If you know of great kayaking spots please let us know and we can decide if they would be appropriate for our group. You do not need to be an experienced kayaker
nor own a kayak. Many places where we go rent kayaks and most of our trips are fairly easy paced. Please contact us to get on the email list of kayak announcements: Pat Zeidman – [email protected], 610-213-7080 Dee Wilzoch – [email protected], 239-282-1374
THE BUOYS
Member Involvement Meeting Dee Wilzcock reported that February’s kayaking event will be a moonlight trip at the Estero River Outfitters. Bring a
flashlight and spare cloths. There will be a guide at the front and rear of the group. Kayak rentals will be available. Last
month’s trip was kayaking with the manatees at Lover’s Key. The manatees were numerous. A May kayaking seminar is in work. Cost - $15 for member and $30 for nonmembers.
Lites Bites – March Lite Bites will be prepared by Ken and Velva Wilzback. The menu will include pulled pork on a bun, baked beans, colesaw and desert.
Steve Gustafson reported that the 1st Power Squadron Scuba meeting was held 2/5/13. Interested parties should contact Steve Gustafson at 847-622-8551. The Cape Coral Power Squadron is planning a nautical garage sale in March 8th for Power Squadron members only and March 9th for the general public. This will be a terrific opportunity to clean out those nautical items that you no longer have a use for. Details will be distributed. Steve Gustafson is looking for volunteers to support this event.
John and Connie Farmer will host the March MI Pot Luck. The MI group is preparing a flyer with contact phone numbers of the different Power Squadron groups. The flyer will be
available at the Power Squadron office.

THE BUOYS
ENTERTAINMENT COMMITTEE’S HOLIDAY PARTY WAS A HUGE SUCCESS!
This was our first pot-luck dinner. We had a great turnout. With 108
members attending, we had numerous dishes to choose from. We had so
much food that we had to hold some back in the kitchen until we freed up
serving space. We also had those famous mini chocolate éclairs and
crème puffs for dessert.
This was our second event with Bobby Hubcat for our entertainment. Once
again, we got several positive comments from members on how much they
liked his music. The dance floor was filled most of the evening.
We held a “decorate your table” contest. Two best-decorated holiday
theme tables were selected by our judges. Gifts were holiday candles,
kitchen dish towels with holiday theme and holiday theme hors d’oeuvre /
dessert plates.
We held a raffle offering 18 holiday/gift prizes with 18 potential winners.
We purchased several holiday items. In addition, the following Squadron
members contributed gifts:
Paul Moses, a bottle of Crown Royal with a set of glasses
Dee Pogrebniak, an Arbonne International Christmas stocking that con-
tained numerous high-end women’s skin care products
Barbara Partsch, holiday gift basket
Barb Egmore, pierced earrings, 6 Christmas “star” cocktail glasses, 4 old
fashion glasses
Chris Collier, Tastefully Simple gift
Carole Ann Parsons, crystal necklace/earrings set which she made
Gift certificates from three restaurants and one hair salon
We had several Entertainment Committee members volunteer to make this a wonderful evening. Those
who assisted were Paul Moses, table set up and breakdown; Carol Hodgkinson, reservations and check in;
Barb Egmore, Sheila Spicer, Michele Garrels and Sudy Soltysiak, table dressing and/or kitchen clean-up;
and Paul Moses assisted me with end-of-evening dinner room clean-up. Warren Maciag, Paul Moses and
Sudy Soltysiak purchased the evening’s beverages.
In addition, we thank our photographers, Harold Garrels and Barb Egmore, (look for some of Barb’s
pictures in this edition of THE BUOYS); our wine servers, Gene DuBien, Art Cole, Ron Wilzoch, and
John Hodgkinson; Barbara Partsch, 50/50, Sonja Penny and Nancy Kuyoth, raffle ticket sales; Ken Partsch
for table calling/prayer, and Paul Moses for calling our 50/50 ticket winners. If I forgot anyone, I truly
apologize.
The Entertainment Committee members chose the homeless children of Cape Coral for our holiday toy
drive for children 3 to 11 years of age. At a past Squadron general meeting, we learned from a speaker,
Dr. Ruthie Lohmeyer, Lee County School District’s Parent Assistant Center, that Cape Coral has about 400
homeless children, some of whom live in cars. We were able to make a
special request that our toys go solely to children who reside in Cape
Coral. Squadron members were very generous with their toy
donations.
Barb and I delivered
approximately 60 to 70
unwrapped toys to
The School District of Lee
County’s Project ACCESS.

THE BUOYS
FROM THE CIRCULATION MANAGER Our Buoys gang met on 31 January at Squadron Harbour to prep our February BUOYS for mailing. The team of eight, this time, made short work of the task and our job was done in no
time without a hitch. As always, the conversations were on multiple topics and we always have some good laughs, which makes our job pretty easy and enjoyable.
My thanks go out to the following volunteers and to Detlef Rohleder for providing our mailing labels.
Mary Lou Battistini Kathy Sosbe Lt Harold Garrels, P Max Stewart
Lt/C Michele Garrels Phyllis Stewart P/C Al Rubio, P
Remember, volunteers are always welcome. If you would like to join our team for approxi-mately two hours (but most likely less) a month, please contact me at 541-9948 or email me at
Lt Elaine Van Slett P.S. Our team will soon have a new leader who will be announced next month, and I
am sure that our task will be smoothly and efficiently carried forward. I will assist our new team leader at the end of February and if needed in March to be sure that the
transition will be seamless.
