Backup: From Insurance Policy to Threat RemediationData center backup software is typically seen as a necessary insurance policy. It does not add additional functionality to production systems, but it does help prevent one of the worst possible scenarios: loss of data.

Page 6: The Buyer’s Guide to Data Center Backup Software › rs › 827-FOI-687 › images › The-Buyer's-Gu… · Vembu BDR Suite 23NAKIVO Backup and Replication 3 5 7 13 18 19 22. 3

One of the risks of data center backup is that any weaknesses of the data retrieval process only become obvious following a data loss event. At this point, if the software does not do its intended job, it’s too late. For this reason, it is critical to continually test the software in real-world conditions to make sure it functions properly.

Historically, only about 3% of backed-up data was ever restored in a given year. However, the nature of the threat of data loss has changed. The problem today is more likely to be something like ransomware, where the attack surface is 100%. These threats cause a red alert organization- wide. Backup is less likely to be seen as an insurance policy and more likely to be understood as the best possible

remediation against infection by ransomware or other malware threats.

In light of the expanded role of backup software in averting catastrophe, the stakes have never been higher. Buying the right software can mean the difference between a costly and reputation-bruising data breach, and preventing that data breach from ever happening.

The biggest threat of data loss today

originates from malicious attacks, like ransomware.

Trend #1: Converged Secondary Storage

Converged secondary storage is a combination of many data protection technologies including backup, recovery, archival, replication, deduplication, compression, and encryption. This term was originally coined by Cohesity and adopted by other vendors, notably Rubrik. The purpose converged secondary storage is to consolidate data protection processes. Typical use cases are combining data backup with archival, or with recovery. These systems are similar to hyper-converged platforms and are often sold as hardware/software combinations that integrate computing, storage, and virtualization on a single box. The idea of a turnkey packaged solution is attractive to those with little interest in selecting a server and the associated software components, and just want something scalable, secure, and optimized out of the gate. On the other hand, some customers already have appropriate infrastructure in their data center and would prefer a software-only solution they can install themselves. One of the big advantages of the converged storage approach is that it allows buyers to think beyond backup. Instead, buyers think in terms of a broader data protection management strategy.

94% of data center backup users are

happy with the feature set of their

current solution.

Trend #2: Copy Data Management

Copy data management is a solution to proliferating copies of data across the enterprise. This is a common problem. The amount of data collected and processed by enterprises has grown exponentially over the last few years. If multiple copies of the same data are stored, this uses up available space and degrades performance. By some estimates, over half of the data stored by an enterprise is copy data.

The key insight behind copy data management is that there should be a centralized, policy-driven way to manage the creation and use of copies in an automated and efficient

manner. Many IT functions beyond data protection also need access to copies of data. For example, test and development teams constantly copy production data to test, and vice-versa. Infrastructure analytics and report generation also depend on access to copies of production data.

Actifio was the pioneer in this area. The organization realized that by using similar virtualization techniques that VMware applied to compute, they could similarly collapse physical copy sprawl and speed access to virtual copies. This approach radically reduced storage growth rates and simplified operations.

Copy data management capabilities are now pervasive in backup offerings, and most enterprise vendors include some form of copy data management as standard with their products.

Over half of the data stored by an enterprise

organization is copy data.

Trend #3: Cloud and Hybrid Storage

Cloud storage is not yet the de facto storage option for most organizations. This is despite advantages like elasticity which allows for capacity growth with unlimited storage. Due to rapidly declining costs, backup storage in the cloud is growing quickly. However, a large majority of organizations have a hybrid strategy. This allows both on-premise and cloud backup strategies, typically dictated by the kind of data being backed up. For example, mission-critical data might be backed up to disk in the data center, while data less likely to be needed in the short term is stored in the cloud as a form of archiving. Object cloud storage is particularly desirable when large amounts of user-generated data are stored. This kind of storage is typically used for storage of unstructured data like video and music files in the cloud. It is an excellent storage medium for very large data sets, such as backup files and log files.

53% of data center backup users

are using a hybrid backup approach.

Customers are highly satisfied with their data center backup solution...

94% of survey respondents expressed high satisfaction with the feature set provided by their data center backup solution. 91% felt that it was good value for the price. This was true regardless of the product used, despite the substantial disparity in product offerings. The data center backup tools respondents used ranged from relatively inexpensive, simple products to costly, fully-featured enterprise platforms. This unanimity of opinion is likely related to set-and-forget automation. Most backup and replication processes are scheduled to run automatically. IT staff tend to not think about these process until there is an urgent need to recover lost data due to an unforeseen event. In other words, once these products have been purchased, installed, and configured, they shift to back-of-mind.However, data center backup has seen more innovation in the last few years than it has in a long time. The insurance policy mindset is no longer an apt metaphor. Backup and replication products are an increasingly important first line of defense against ransomware and other cybersecurity threats. Backups are also coming to be understood as having a secondary purpose: they can be leveraged by many IT functions, such as test and development teams, that also have a need for this data.

…yet still considering replacing it

As customers become aware of new market entrants with different approaches and capabilities, some may consider switching. Despite the high level of satisfaction respondents express with their current solution, 17% indicated that they would not buy the same product today.

This is part of a trend in data center backup of eroding product stickiness. The propensity to switch is highlighted in a recent report by Evaluator Group. When given a time period of 12 to 24 months, a full 57% of respondents indicated an intention to replace or augment their current solution. Even though

organizations are not unhappy with their current solution, they have a clear sense that emerging technology trends in the space, such as backup to public clouds, copy data management, and broader data protection in general, mean they may have to replace or augment existing solutions in the future.

Reasons for replacing backup solutions

Survey respondents shared why they wouldn’t purchase the same product today. Generally, reasons cited include the need to cut costs, and the existence of better alternatives, especially for cloud backup.

Five years ago, when we purchased this, it was one of the better options out there. Since that time our back up needs have changed, and also

there have been more players in the market, especially in regard to cloud.

I think there are other competitive solutions in the market I would like to try.

The application is great and does its job, the cost is very high, and the

renewal fees are extremely expensive.

I feel there are better solutions out there. We bought it when we have

physical servers, now we are virtual. We might need to reevaluate TSM licenses as we are moving to cloud and there is a pressure to cut down cost and use cloud based backup/restore (snapshot) going forward.

Tips for Buyers

As always, it is important to understand your requirements and map them carefully to product capabilities. However, it is also important to understand market dynamics. There are many new vendors and products. Some are targeted specifically at smaller organizations, some are delivered as a hardware appliance, and still others include new technology such as anti-ransomware security or copy data management.

> Consider several vendors, including newer market entrants with which you may be less familiar.

> Narrow down the options by reading reviews and/or other research. In particular, pay attention to use cases indicating exactly how the product is used. If use cases match yours, and reviewers are seeing success, the product may be a good fit.

> Ask vendors to discuss the rationale for new capabilities around features like cloud storage, data security, and copy data management. Then, ask for a demonstration.

Use reviews to help build a

product shortlist.

How Prevalent is Backup to the Cloud?Cloud backup is fast becoming mainstream. Almost one third of respondents indicated that they are already backing up to the cloud, and a substantial number saying that they are planning on doing this in the future. The main reasons given for this shift are cost and disaster recovery.

Cloud Backup is Quite Prevalent & Becoming More So

Backing data up to the cloud is certainly one of the biggest trends in the space. Accepted wisdom from analysts and vendors is that by the end of next year, somewhere around 25% of companies will be storing backup data in the cloud. Our survey indicates much broader adoption already, with 46% saying that they back up data to the cloud. Another 31% say they are planning on doing so.

So, what is driving this momentum? 60% of respondents who currently or plan to back up to the cloud indicate that disaster recovery is a major benefit of cloud backup. Other benefits include cost effectiveness, regulatory compliance, and long-term data retention (sometimes as a replacement for tape).

77% either already back up data to

the cloud, or are planning to do so.

Tips for Buyers

If disaster recovery is your main driver for backing up data to the cloud, there are a few important considerations that should inform your conversations with vendors. There is little doubt that cloud storage is seen as a modern replacement for data storage on tape. As the cost of data storage has decreased and broadband speeds continue to increase, the cloud is a viable target for storing vast quantities of data offsite, at low cost. But there are potential downsides to be aware of.

Ensure you ask vendors about:

> Security: Cloud storage creates security worries. There have been several high-profile media stories of cloud data being improperly protected and exposed. It’s important to know if vendors provide encryption technology to protect data before it leaves the corporate network. Know what security tools or services the vendor provides to protect your data.

> Data retrieval costs: If and when you do need to recover data from the cloud, are there charges for faster retrieval? As a whole, cloud data storage is becoming more cost-effective. But the ability to read and write from cloud storage data is likely to be slow, and vendors may bill separately for fast retrieval. Make sure you understand these charges.

> Compliance: Compliance regulations often require that data be stored for periods of years, often 7 years or more. Traditional climate-controlled offsite storage on tape can provide compliance with these retention regulations affordably and easily. It’s important to understand how long data can be stored in the cloud.

Read these tips to get the most out of your conversations

with vendors.

Veeam Backup and Replication has a strong legacy as a backup solution for VMware and Hyper-V. The company retains a strong VMware focus, but has diversified to add Nutanix AHV. It has expanded from this base to support other environments such as physical Linux and Microsoft Windows, and more recently AIX and Solaris. The company has also recently added support for endpoint (laptops). Unlike some of its competitors, Veeam Backup and Replication does not offer an appliance form factor. It is rather software-defined and hypervisor-agnostic, meaning that the product can be installed anywhere and can run on any hardware.

In my most recent support case, the passing of it from one team member to another has not been great. I’ve had to re-explain the issue, re-run tests I’ve done before and re-send logs I’ve sent before. This is even after the Tier Two team got involved.

Once Veeam is setup and configured properly, it requires little intervention. Pretty much a set it

While generally quite affordable on the lowend, Veeam can get costly if you’re backing

up a large number of ESX hosts with a large number of CPU’s and cores, especially with the

Enterprise and Enterprise Plus versions.

Great Fit For: SMBs or enterprises that want to protect virtualized environments and prefer a software-defined product allowing installation on any hardware. It includes access to pre-built integrations to a variety of storage options, including NetApp, Pure Storage, Nimble Storage, and others.

Acronis Backup is a reliable data center backup solution for small and medium businesses, or for departmental use in a large enterprise. The company provides backup, disaster recovery, and file sync products across virtual, physical, and mobile environments. Disaster recovery and replication capabilities derive from the acquisition of nScaled in 2014. The product is particularly suited to backing up Windows servers. The company believes that backup can no longer be considered in isolation, but rather as one component of data protection. For this reason, Acronis Backup is working on a new release that will include security capabilities aimed at preventing ransomware and other cyber-attacks, alongside standard backup features.

Restores can be undertaken in a number of ways which is really useful. You can restore a whole VM

to the same host or a new one. You can convert physical machines to a VM and a very useful

feature is the ability to dive into the backup file and pluck individual files and thus restore single files

quickly—good for file servers etc.

Nakivo is a relative newcomer to the data center backup space. Founded in 2012, the company still has fewer than 200 employees. Like Veeam, the company focuses on data protection for VMware, Hyper-V, and cloud environments. It has built a strong presence among smaller companies but does have some enterprise customers. Nakivo is priced to appeal to SMB.The company has seen significant growth in this market over the last few years. Their go-to-market motion is largely through channel partners.
