2017–2018 FILM SALONSFilms are presented at the Community Foundation of Sarasota 2635 Fruitville Rd., Sarasota, FL 34237 | FREE (Donations gratefully accepted.)

A SERIOUS MAN • Friday, December 8 • 1 p.m.–4 p.m.Hosted by Mike Epperly, this 2009 dark comedy takes us into the world of Larry Gopnik, a Jewish physics professor at a 1960s university whose life crumbles both professionally and personally, leading him to questions about his faith. His wife is leaving him to marry a widower, his jobless brother has moved in; someone is trying to sabotage his chances for tenure; and his son is in debt to a marijuana dealer. Larry is a modern-day “Job,” and themes include: faith, death, love, communication and, “Who has the answers?”

BABETTE’S FEAST • Friday, January 5 • 1 p.m.–4 p.m. Hosted by Pete Grant, this 1987 Danish film centers on Protestant sisters Martine and Philippa, who grew to spinsterhood in rural 19th-century Denmark under the wrathful eye of their father, a strict pastor. A Parisian refugee named Babette arrives to serve as the family cook and housekeeper; 14 years later she wins a French lottery and plans a lavish celebratory banquet that tempts the family’s congregation—which has been dwindling since their father’s death—who abjure such Earthly pleasures as fine foods and wines.

SOMETHING THE LORD MADE • Friday, February 16 • 1 p.m.–4: p.m. Hosted by John Mutz, this 2004 film looks at the work of black cardiac pioneer Vivien Thomas and his complex 34-year partnership with white surgeon Alfred Blalock, the world famous “Blue Baby doctor” who pioneered modern heart surgery. In 1930, Blalock hired Thomas as a janitor at Vanderbilt University, but his dexterity and intellectual acumen landed him the role of research partner. Following a move to John Hopkins in 1943, they had to skirt a racist system that only allowed Blalock to receive the acclaim.

THE BIG CHILL • Friday, March 23 • 1 p.m.–4 p.m. Hosted by Peter Mermin, this 1983 comedy-drama focuses on seven former college friends who gather for a weekend reunion following the funeral of a friend, Alex, who committed suicide. Each must confront the personal truths, sacrifices and betrayals that have left them disenchanted, as well as deal with unresolved issues they have with Alex, and with one another. Discussion will focus on the hero archetype and its relationship to social and political forces, and the relevance of the film to our current social and political situation.

INTO THE WEST • Friday, April 13 • 1 p.m.–4 p.m. Hosted by Galin McGowan, this magical Irish film, released in 1992, is about two young boys living with their widowed, alcoholic father. Their difficult existence is uplifted by the arrival of their nomadic grandfather, who has brought with him a magical horse from legend—Tír na nÓg (meaning “Land of Eternal Youth” in Irish). When crooked cops discover the prized animal, they commandeer it, intending to sell it as a racing horse, but the boys resolve to rescue the mythical creature. They escape the poverty of a north Dublin council estate, and ride “Into the West” where they find that Tír na nÓg is not just a horse.

C. G. JUNG SOCIETY OF SARASOTA 2017–2018 LECTURE & WORKSHOP SERIESMARCHDR. LIONEL CORBETTLecture: Friday, March 16, 2018, from 7 p.m.–9 p.m.The Soul in Anguish: Psychological and Spiritual Approaches to SufferingJoin us in a powerful discussion focusing on the problem of suffering, the effects of suffering on the personality and a variety of approaches to address suffering found in depth psychology. This lecture will look at ways to find meaning in suffering, times when suffering can be seen as an initiatory process into a new level of consciousness, and the process of radical acceptance of suffering in situations in which it cannot be changed. We will also contrast some of the traditional spiritual approaches to suffering with a psychological approach.

Workshop: Saturday, March 17, 2018, from 10 a.m.–4 p.m.Painful Emotions: A Depth Psychological ApproachStates of mind such as envy, hatred, grief and loneliness cause enormous suffering. Many such forms of mental pain are difficult to put into words. We will discuss some of the sources of these painful emotions and suggest ways in which they may be approached from a depth psychological point of view. The second part of the workshop will discuss the problem of evil from a depth psychological point of view.

APRILSTEPHEN GILLUMLecture: Friday, April 6, 2018, from 7 p.m.–9 p.m. Workshop: Saturday April 7, 2018, from 10 a.m.–1 p.m.Consciousness Awakening in a New Paradigm As our world is influenced by new discoveries in quantum physics, we can rapidly expand our consciousness on the journey of self-realization, or what Carl Jung called the Individuation Process. In this experiential lecture and workshop, we will learn easy techniques to plumb the depths of the unconscious and integrate this realm—at both the individual and collective levels—into our psychological structure. By observing our thoughts we will begin to dissolve our ego with the light of consciousness. As we become more aware of our thoughts and actions, we are offered a window to become active participants in the co-creation and realization of our true nature. Supporting material will include videos by leading authorities on consciousness including: Peter Russell, Rupert Spira, Deepak Chopra and Ekhart Tolle.

MARCIA BENDERLecture: Saturday, April 7, 2018, from 2 p.m.–4 p.m. Jung and Tarot: An Archetypal ExplorationThe Tarot is an ancient method of divination that sparked the interest of Carl Jung, and the symbolism of these ancient cards weave into Jung's concept of archetypes—those universal, archaic patterns and images that originate from the collective unconscious and are expressed in the physical world through individuals and their cultures. Join us for a journey into the symbolism of the Major Arcana cards of the Tarot and how they can be used to access our psyche, including the unconscious and superconscious or "Higher Self" for guidance and insight into our human nature and journey in life. We also will look examples of the Tarot deck designed by Jung.

DECEMBERDR. GALIN McGOWANLecture: Friday, December 1, 2017, from 7 p.m.–9 p.m. Blessings from the UnconsciousIn Jungian Analysis, much emphasis is given to how one approaches the unconscious as a means of healing, transformation and spiritual enhancement. In an analysis one comes face-to-face with the complex and archetypal content, which can be powerful and illuminating, and bring numinous blessings, but can also be destructive and overwhelming. This lecture will explore the process of analysis and the approach to the complex and archetypal content of the unconscious through the process of Association, Amplification, Active Imagination and Application.

Workshop: Saturday, December 2, 2017, from 10 a.m.–4 p.m.Blessings from the Unconscious: An In-depth JourneyTogether we will weave theory and practice with archetypal content taken from mythological and contemporary sources to explore the steps of Association, Amplification, Active Imagination and Application. We will learn how archetypes can seem to "have a life of their own" and how one can come to know a complex for the first time. This workshop also will explore the use of biofeedback, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, sand-tray and creative structure to support the process of accessing the unconscious content. Participants will have the opportunity to observe or volunteer as desired.

JANUARYDR. JAMES HOLLISLecture: Friday, January 19, 2018, from 7 p.m.–9 p.m.Living More Fully in the Shadow of MortalityJung observed that, "Life is a short pause between two great mysteries." That fact is not in dispute; what matters, then, is how we live that pause. E. M. Forster observed that the two who could most illumine us, the corpse and the baby, are not talking. Given that mortality frames our journey, how might we live it more fully, not defined by fear, morbidity and denial? What attitudes and practices allow us to live more fully? And what psychological maturation brings us to experience this short pause as rich with meaning?

2 CEs available for Dr. Hollis' lecture | $10 CEBroker Course# 20-616498Course Objectives: 1. Examine cultural attitudes and neuroses surrounding mortality. 2. Discern the role that aging and fears of dying play in client's lives. 3. Identify "referred" symptoms arising out of aging and mortality issues. 4. Disclose the therapist's own issues regarding aging and mortality. 5. Analyze cultural attitudes, which impede growth and maturity in clients with regard to aging and mortality.

Workshop: Saturday, January 20, 2018 from 9 a.m.–1 p.m.Living the Examined Life: Steps to the Recovery of a Personal JourneyTiny, dependent and at the mercy of the world around us, we all have to adapt, adjust, bury, deny, split-off and repress, and thereby lose contact with our own sovereignty and natural source of guidance. The core project of the second half of life is the recovery of that source. This workshop will focus on 21 steps we may take toward the recovery of our personal journey.

4 CEs available for Dr. Hollis' workshop | $25 CEBroker Course# 20-585115 Course Objectives: 1. Identify critical issues to be faced in second half of life therapy. 2. FEBRUARYDR. CAROL S. PEARSONLecture: Friday, February 23, 2018, from 7 p.m.–9 p.m.Archetypal Narrative Intelligence Case Study: The USA in AnalysisMuch unhappiness occurs in our individual and organizational lives when the stories we are living are not authentic and do not work in the situations we are facing. The individuation process can include shifting the narratives through which we make meaning of our lives and our situation. The same is true for countries. Principles of archetypal psychology can show how Americans might come together again, so that we can better thrive as individuals and groups in today's challenging global context.

Workshop: Saturday, February 24, 2018, from 10 a.m.–4 p.m.My Story, Your Story, Our Story: Narrative Intelligence in IndividuationPeople individuate in part by differentiating from others to find their uniqueness and also by what and whom we are willing to commit to. This workshop helps participants increase their ability to observe and name archetypal narratives in themselves, others and the systems of which they are a part, as well unconscious messages in dreams, Active Imagination exercises, synchronistic experiences and bodily sensations. The goal is reinforcing both individuality and the ability to connect well with others.
