This year's National Glaucoma Awareness
Week will take place on the 8th - 14th June
2015. The focus will be on driving and
encouraging people to have regular eye
health checks to ensure that they are safe to
drive.
Driving and our ability and safety to do so, is
something that many people take for
granted. Yet, how many people have a
regular eye health check? Even if a person
can see a number plate at 20 metres, how
many have been tested for glaucoma which
affects vision?
Glaucoma causes misty, patchy or blurred
vision in places. It can cause people to miss
the unexpected such as a person crossing the
road, a cyclist passing, or a vehicle merging
into traffic. The only way to know for sure
about your vision and your safety on the
roads is to have regular eye health checks
every one to two years, particularly if you
are over the age of 40.

Cervical Screening Awareness Week is a
UK-wide initiative led by Jo's
Cervical Cancer Trust. The week (15th -
21st June) aims to highlight the
importance of cervical screening and how
attending a screening invitation can help
to prevent cervical cancer.
In the UK, 22% of women still do not
attend their cervical screening, so raising
public awareness of cervical cancer
prevention is a priority. Public knowledge
and understanding of issues such as
cervical screening, the causes of cervical
abnormalities and cervical cancer and
treatment is generally low.

Men’s Health Week 2015 is from the 15th to
21st June and will focus on healthy living for
men. The Men's Health Forum leads Men's
Health Week in England and Wales. Men's
Health Week 2015 focuses on healthy living
challenging men to:
Look after their wellbeing
Don't smoke
Drink sensibly
Be active
Watch their weight
Turn up to their NHS Health Check
Why this topic?
Men are less likely to lead a healthy lifestyle.
They are more likely to smoke, drink alcohol
to hazardous levels and be overweight or
obese. These lifestyles can lead into serious
diseases such as cancer, heart diseases and
stokes, the risk of which can be reduced by
leading a healthy lifestyle. Our Men's Health
Manifesto challenges men and health
providers on these issues.

Photokeratitis is an eye condition that occurs when the cornea is burned by
ultraviolet B rays (UVB)
Did you know it’s just as important to protect your eyes from the sun’s harmful rays as it is to shield your skin? The intense ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun damage sensitive cells in the eyes, eventually affecting vision. Experts say it is difficult to isolate the exact amount of damage that UV radiation imposes on the eye over a long period. However, a number of studies have shown that the effects build up and may increase the chance of developing eye problems later in life. These may include cataracts, a clouding of the lens of the eye. While sunglasses are definitely a good idea when it comes to eye protection, not all sunglasses are created equal. Choose sunglasses that limit transmission to no more than 1 percent UVB and 1 percent UVA rays i.e. they block at least 99% of the UV rays. Other things to look for:
Lenses large enough to completely cover the eye and prevent as much light as possible from entering through the edges of the glasses. Wrap-around sunglasses are best. Darker lenses, particularly if you are more light sensitive. Gray lenses. They provide the least colour distortion, but not any better protection than other coloured lenses.
More is better when it comes to protecting your eyes from the sun, according to eye experts. If you’re planning to be out in the sun, protect your eyes with a combination of quality sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat.
