The Calling of St. Matthew (c. 1599‐1600) The artist Caravaggio depicts Matthew the tax collector sitting at a table with four other men. Jesus Christ and

Saint Peter have entered the room, and Jesus is pointing at Matthew. A beam of light illuminates the faces of the

Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time June 21, 2020

day, parishioners, neighbors and visitors – Christians and non– Christians – visit and stop to venerate the Lord hanging on the Cross. The crucifix outside is reaching people who won’t come inside.

In such a large space, the centrality, dignity and importance of the consecrated altar was lost. The altar is where the bloodless sacri-fice of Christ is performed through the consecrated priest. It is from here that God feeds and loves us with Himself. The altar is the symbol of Christ himself.

When I was sent to St. Mary’s in 2006, a plywood free standing wall was built behind the priest’s chair. It blocked a small door which was used to access the old high altar which was no longer there. I was told that attempts had been made to fill the visual emptiness of the space. Curtains, drapes and sheers were used to cover it, but nothing was successful. Personally, I found that sit-ting in the chair surrounded by curtains and sheers made me very uncomfortable. We took it down.

After the restoration of the Church in 2010, we built what is called a civory or baldacchin to emphasize once again the im-portance of the altar. The most famous baldachin in the world was built by Bernini over the altar at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Our civory was made up of the four columns united by an architrave (main beam). It was donated by a wonderful parishioner, Bob Little, a veteran who was sent to both the European and Pacific Theatres in World War II. He wanted to make an offering in memory of his beloved wife, Ruthie, before his death. One of our parishioners, Matt Leblanc, built this piece. The design of the original civory was modern. It was my idea that it should differ-entiate itself from all the other rounded arches in the Church.

Over time, I do not think my idea was completely successful. Last year, visitors from a neighboring parish came to me and said they wanted to help us adorn the altar. They told me they have been blessed by God and wanted to make an offering to show their thanks. Let us give thanks for this generous and faithful couple. Let us give thanks for their initiative. They didn’t wait to be asked; they offered on their own. Our plans began before the pan-demic and the drop in attendance and money. We would have never started the project if they had waited to make the donation. They are still alive so I don’t want to mention their names without asking them. I spoke about the challenges and they gave me the go ahead to complete the civory with a canopy or roof. So Matt and I got to work designing the canopy like the one over the altar in the beautiful ancient basilica of St. Clement’s in Rome. We were also helped by the artistic talent of Neil Clapp. The addition is not complete. We are now looking at how to light it and incor-porate a crucifix. We pray that it will bring honor to our Lord and help all of us worship and be united in mind and heart – not by the physical materials but by the grace of the Spirit that comes by the offering of His Body and Blood at that altar. Let us also re-joice that this has been accomplished in light of what we are fac-ing – it is another sign that nothing can stop us from honoring the Lord who honors us with Himself.

ALTAR ADORNMENT A Church building is sanctified. It is consecrated to God. Conse-cration means something is set-apart from other activities for a particular purpose. The holiest part of a Christian Church is the place of sacrifice. It is an altar. A consecrated altar is made of stone and has relics of martyrs placed in the stone. Wooden altars are not consecrated like stone altars but they have a piece of stone built into the wood. St. Mary’s Church has gone through a num-ber of expansions and physical changes since plans for the Church started in 1858. The church building was renovated, ex-panded and beautified over the years. Sometime in the 1890s or early years of the 20th century, three magnificent stone altars were built in the sanctuary. They were designed according to the time and the Tridentine Rite. It included the reredos, the High Altar in the center of the Church. It was highly decorated marble. The priest faced the apse wall when celebrating Mass, and every-one at Mass faced the same direction under that rite. The taber-nacle was in the center. Old photos show that the Statue of Mary which is now on the right side of the altar was in the center with angels flanking her on each side. Today those angels are at the center entrance of the Church. The right side altar was topped by the statue of St. Joseph which is now placed at the side entrance near the Confessional. The left side altar was adorned with the Sacred Heart of Jesus who now stands near the bathroom side entrance. WHY WERE THERE THREE ALTARS INSTEAD OF ONE? The was more than one altar because priests were not al-lowed to concelebrate Mass with one another. It was not part of the Tridentine Rite. Also each priest was required by law to cele-brate a Mass each day.

The Second Vatican Council instituted a number of changes and reforms. The Tridentine Rite which had been celebrated since the Council of Trent was replaced by the Mass of Paul VI. The most obvious change was that Mass was no longer celebrated in Latin only. The vulgate, or language of the people, became the lan-guage of the prayers. This is a topic with a lot of different com-plexities, arguments and feelings accompanying it, which is not the point of this essay. I only mention it because the pastor and people of St. Mary’s after the Council chose to implement the reform of worship by taking down the altars of the Tridentine Rite. I have heard stories that it was broken up in pieces and brought outside to the parking lot so people could bring a piece to their home. I suspect there are still pieces of St. Mary’s altarpiec-es on mantles as well as being used as doorstops in some homes in the parish.

Just as some of the statues on those altars were moved out of the sanctuary, parts of the old altar were used to create the present altar. You can see that the alabaster columns holding up the table were saved. The rest of the apse space was left empty. A large crucifix was placed high up in the ceiling area but it was very far away from the altar and the two pieces really did not connect. Depending where one sat, you either looked at the altar or looked at the crucifix. That crucifix has been brought outside the Church where people can see the Lord hanging on the Cross for them. All

Duodécimo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario 21 de Junio 2020

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, We as a nation are once again facing unrest, division and uncer-tainty on what will happen next. It is often said that the media only reports the bad things. There is certainly no shortage of bad news to report. People in cities all over the country are gathering for marches and protests even with the pandemic. What is the Church’s first responsibility in this situation? It is the same re-sponsibility as at every other time – to pray. The Church is called to ask God to intercede and pray. Prayer must always be done to lead us to act and work for what is just... but it has to begin with prayer. Prayer reminds us to be humble. Prayer is done to soften hearts. Prayer is done because the Holy Spirit is the one alone who can bridge the divide and reach all at the same time. A Church that doesn’t first pray isn’t the Church of Jesus Christ; it is just another NGO, social group or cult. In light of this, we are hosting a PRAYER VIGIL this Friday evening from 7:00–10:00pm, on the Feast of the Sacred Heart (and Juneteenth), to pray for RACIAL HARMONY AND PEACE AMONG ALL PEOPLES AND NATIONS. It is not a Mass. We will begin pray-ing the Rosary outside on the church lawn (weather permitting) because to get to Jesus you go through Mary. We will then move inside for Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. There will be peri-ods of silence, some Scripture and intercessory prayer. The vigil will conclude with Solemn Benediction at 10:00pm. People are welcome to come and go as they like. This evening is being spon-sored by the parish along with the Uganda Catholic Community of Boston. We have reached out to the Black Catholic Office of Boston to invite them and let them know that we are praying for harmony and healing. We hope other parishes will join us in fos-tering prayer because Jesus told us that nothing is more powerful than prayer. Prayer can move mountains, but you can’t just talk about it... you have to pray. Come Lord Jesus! – Fr. Michael

HEALTHY WALTHAM The number of people coming for food donations continues to hold steady. Even with some businesses restarting, 645 people came to get food for their families last Saturday. Let us continue to thank the Lord for the work of Healthy Waltham which contin-ues to help those in need. Let us pray that the numbers decrease because people are able to get back to work.

WELCOME STEVEN! Dear Parishioners of St. Mary: My name is Steven Restrepo. I am a semi-narian for the Archdiocese of Boston. I was born and raised in the City of Boston. I come from two immigrant parents from Co-lombia. I learned how to speak Spanish at home. I have three older brothers. I am a

graduate of Boston College. I entered St. John’s Seminary in the Fall of 2015. I moved to the rectory on June 11th for my summer pastoral assignment. As of May, I finished Third Theology and expect to begin my final year of seminary formation in Septem-ber. It is with God’s hope and joy that I will be ordained as a tran-sitional deacon in the fall. I thank all of you for your warm wel-come this past weekend. I enjoyed being able to interact with some of you outside the doors prior to or after the Mass, social distancing of course. I ask that you continue to pray for me during my final year of seminary formation. – Steven Restrepo

WEEKEND MASSES UPDATES Last weekend the attendance increased to 709 worshippers with 296 attending the largest Mass and 65 attending the smallest Mass. Last week we started to distribute Holy Communion during Mass. We will continue to distribute Holy Communion after Mass on the weekends at least at the larger Masses. We will look at gradually returning to the distribution of Communion during Mass at all celebrations as soon as possible. When Holy Com-munion is distributed during Mass everyone must continue to ap-proach the altar by the side aisles and return to your place by the center aisle. People will receive Communion starting from the last row of the Church. The people in the first row will receive last. Nobody should join the Communion procession until the people sitting behind them have left their pews. What Jesus told the dis-ciples may help you remember this – the last shall be first and the first shall be last. Each weekend, new people show up so please help direct them if they are seated near you and are unsure when to join the procession. Preaching after the Gospel has resumed. Since everyone still wears masks, the priests are planning to preach for 5 minutes on Sundays and 2 minutes at Daily Masses. We will continue to explore restoring more singing and instru-ments. The collection baskets will continue to be at the entrances and exits for the foreseeable future. Please consider donating online. Those who have registered to receive envelopes will still have their donations recorded if they donate online. See the direc-tions for donations in the bulletin.

WORSHIP PROCEDURES For the last few weeks, we have included in the bulletin the pro-cedures that we follow to allow for the safe and reverent celebra-tion of the Holy Eucharist. These procedures have been moved to our website https://www.stmarywaltham.org.

PARISH PROJECT: OUR DAILY BREAD In last weekend’s bulletin we announced a new parish project called Our Daily Bread. We are asking adults and children to vol-unteer to read and record one Book of the Bible in English, Span-ish or Luganda. This will expand (and eventually replace) the current series called Audio Bible that is currently on our website. We will be able to use this library in our catechetical programs for children, adults and catechumens. Thank you to those who have already volunteered; we will provide you with assignments and instructions soon. If you are interested in signing up, please send us an email with your name and contact information. Let us know if you have a preferred Book that you’d like to read!

FRIDAY COLLECTION RESTORED We have begun accepting donations at the Friday 12:10pm Mass. This collection is used to support Project Only A Child orphan-age/school in Guatemala. Donations can be dropped in the bas-kets at the doors on Friday.

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM MASS AND PRAYER We cannot restart the sport and homework hours of the After School Program (ASP) but we are allowed to gather for prayer and worship. Normally, the program would stop for the summer months. However, most of the children are stuck at home all day. We want to keep them engaged and not neglect their spiritual lives. In light of this, we restarted the following prayer times for the children: Tuesday Rosary from 5:00-6:00pm; Thursday Mass 5:00-6:00pm; Friday Adoration Friday 5:00-6:00pm. We will gather and pray in the main church. We will continue this through the summer months for their edification and sanctification. Jesus said, Let the children come to me. Any child not in the program is welcome to join us as well as the ASP program volunteers.

REFLEXION “ No tengáis miedo ”
