There was a public holiday on 10 May 2017, Vesak Day. It was also a day of fun on campus planned by student, Do Minh Nhat (Tyler) who is currently doing a Bachelor of Digital Media in Web Communication and Communication and Media Studies with Murdoch University.

The classrooms in Wilkie Edge and PoMo campuses were specially created for this event “Nerf War”. Students registered in teams and challenged each other in three different battle modes; Mexican Playoff, Capture The Flag and Recue The Hostage.

Unlike “Mexican Playoff” and “Capture The Flag” where participants competed in a fixed location, “Rescue The Hostage” required the participants to go around the campuses solving puzzles that would lead them to find and rescue someone

who had been held hostage.

Upon completion of all three battles and after the tabulation of the scores, the top three winning teams with the highest accumulated points got to take home a Nerf Gun of their choice!

If you are a student who loves fun and making more friends, come join the monthly activities organised by the student leaders from Student Executive Committee (SEC)! Come, ask us about the monthly activities and workshops which are specially organised for Kaplan students. You may wish to check out the following link https://campuslife.kaplan.com.sg/ to find more information on our events/activities/workshops held regularly.

“All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” is a proverb which the Kaplan Student Council (KSC) does not advocate.

In KSC, student leaders from the Student Executive Committee (SEC) and Club Representatives (CR) from the various international community clubs organise regular events for fellow students in Kaplan.

The student leaders are supported, mentored and effectively trained in areas of leadership capabilities as they go through a six-month programme tailored specifically for them, known as the Kaplan Student Leadership Programme (KSLP). They go through

six different workshops conducted by a professional trainer, obtain at least one representation experience (i.e. competition) and undergo a 3 days 2 nights teambuilding camp outside of campus.

This enriching programme not only strengthens bonds of friendship, it also prepares the individuals to grow beyond their capabilities and be more than ready as they embark in their future endeavours.

Come, be a Student Leader now! Speak to us at Student Affairs office, PoMo level 6 (next to classroom PM603).

There are many benefits that an intern or part-timer will gain by pursuing an internship or part-time job position before graduating, Besides the industrial knowledge which they can never learn in a classroom setting, an intern or part-timer will be able to build up their professional network and possibly secure a full-time position even before they graduate.

In our three part series, the Student Affairs and Graduate Services will feature some undergraduates who have completed, are currently pursuing their internship or are doing a part-time job in order to differentiate themselves from their peers upon their graduation from Kaplan.

Why did you decide to go for an internship?

I personally felt that going for

an internship would actually be beneficial for me as I am able to experience the demands of a professional role. As a student who studied in a Human Resource Management major, I felt that it was a great chance for me to venture into a different role and expand my capabilities in other areas besides my forte in Human Resource.

I heard some companies treat their interns as a “coffee boy”. Did you end up serving coffee, tea and snacks to your colleagues?

Absolutely not! (with a laugh). I was tasked to take up roles like leading an annual gala event infused with an opportunity to bring about awareness for a charitable organisation. On top of that, I had to manage accounts, budgets and the chamber’s website together with the social media pages. These were the things that I would not

get to learn during my classes. Besides that, I had the opportunity to network with the heads of MNCs who I had to work closely with. I was also privileged to be given the chance to visit big international brand offices like Visa and Apple (Singapore).

What was the most important thing that you’ve learned so far?

Time management. It was very important to manage my time well. My task required me to plan and I always made a point to do my duties ahead of the deadlines. In case if something cropped up at the last minute, I was able to react in a timely manner.

What are the perks that you gained during your internship?

I got a chance to participate in the Ho Rih Hwa Leadership in Asia Pacific Lecture Series which featured Mr Ban Ki-moon, who was the eighth Secretary-General of the United Nations. In my opinion, that was one of the biggest perks that I got as an intern.I guess being an intern in the chamber had helped me to create a positive perception on my resume too. I applied and was selected to participate in the ASEAN-India Student Exchange Programme organised by National Youth Council and Ministry of External Affairs (India).I got the chance to visit India’s government agencies and

meet industry leaders. The best of all was that the trip was all paid for and free of charge. So, I would say that the internship had helped me to open more doors to opportunities of learning and discovering. Do you have anything to share with students who are planning for their career?

I would like to encourage students to take on internships or volunteer in different areas as this would help them to open up their views and perspectives of the professional world. Do attend workshops and other sharing sessions to build your network. Internship is not only about earning extra allowances but it is a learning process which will be beneficial for you in future.
