RECOGNIZING CANDIDA SYMPTOMS !Candida (yeast) infection comes in many guises, which is why it is often dif-

ficult to recognize and diagnose. Millions of people suffer for years, or even

their whole lives, from symptoms such as fatigue, brain fog, recurring yeast

or urinary tract infections, itching, headaches or irritable bowel syndrome,

without realizing the real cause. Simply put, they are harboring an oppor-

tunistic fungus, called Candida albicans. Identifying the issue is the first

step towards restoring your health.

Candida is just one of a family of yeast organisms, but its importance lies in

its being the most common cause of fungal infections in humans worldwide.

It is one of the naturally occurring microorganisms in your gut, and forms

part of the natural population of gut flora.

It becomes a problem affecting your health only when the natural balance of

the gut flora is lost. Unfortunately, it is easy to upset this beautiful arrange-

ment, most commonly by factors such as a high sugar diet, antibiotic inges-

tion and stress. The loss of this system of checks-and-balances leads to the

rapid multiplication of Candida albicans, which in turn produces a multitude

of symptoms.

!!!

“Modern lifestyle and diet choices can lead to an imbal-ance between yeast and healthy bacteria in the gut.”

15 Typical Symptoms of Candida Overgrowth: !1. Mental functions - brain fog, confusion, poor memory, lack of focus, diffi-

culty with concentration

2. Fungal infections of the nails or skin, such as athlete’s foot, toenail fungus

or ringworm

3. Skin diseases, such as rashes, eczema, psoriasis or hives

4. Joint pain, stiffness or swelling (arthritis)

5. Chronic fatigue and lack of energy

6. Digestive symptoms including diarrhea, bloating or constipation

7. Mood swings, anxiety, irritability or depression

!!!!!!!!!

!While yeast infections on the outside of the body are relatively easy to identify, internal candidiasis can be more difficult to recognize.

Page 5: The Candida Manualcandidagomanualv2.pdfCandida (yeast) infection comes in many guises, which is why it is often dif-ficult to recognize and diagnose. Millions of people suffer for

8. Itching of the vagina, rectum or jock itch, infections of the urinary tract

and/or vagina.

9. Cravings for sugar and other refined carbohydrates.

10. Allergies, sensitivities and intolerances, including hay fever.

11. Respiratory symptoms - cough, bronchitis or pneumonia, pain or tight-

ness in the chest, wheezing, shortness of breath, asthma.

12. Sleep disturbances such as insomnia, frequent waking, nightmares, rest-

less sleep

13. Sinus inflammation, swelling and infections, nasal congestion, exces-

sive mucus in the sinuses, nose or throat

14. Muscle aches and pains, numbness, burning or tingling.

15. Weight gain and difficulty in losing weight.

Of course, just because you have one of these symptoms, it needn’t

mean you have Candida overgrowth. However, further investigation is

probably warranted, especially if you have multiple symptoms.

We strongly recommend that you seek assistance and guidance from a suitably qualified medical practitioner, such as a natur-opath, for diagnosis and assistance in putting together a suit-able treatment plan.

The good news is that in most cases, Candida overgrowth is easy to over-

come with a few simple changes in your lifestyle and diet. While the extent

of change may seem difficult to put into practice, you’ll soon find yourself

feeling so much better and healthier, that the new way of living will come

naturally!

THREE-STEP TREATMENT PLAN FOR CANDIDA !

!!Treating Candida is a three step process:

1. First, look at your diet carefully. You’ll be better off with as few sug-

ars, yeasts and fungi as possible. More on that later.

2. Secondly, you would benefit from a combination of safe and natural

effective anti-fungals to help cleanse your system of the yeast and

kill as many of them as possible. We recommend taking two or three

anti-fungals simultaneously, to prevent the development of resistance

in Candida.

Vitaana Health CandidaGo contains a number of natural ingredients,

including oregano extract, caprylic acid and black walnut hulls.

3. The third step is to start a good probiotic supplement. This will help

re-introduce beneficial bacteria to the gut and thus restore a healthy

intestinal balance. The resultant strengthening of your immune sys-

tem will help immensely in preventing any recurrence of the yeast in-

fection.

Vitaana Health CandidaGo is supplemented with probiotics in the form

of L. Acidophilus. However, you may wish to start on a higher-dose

probiotic later in the program. Another excellent source is fermented

foods, which contain naturally occurring bacteria, such as sauerkraut,

kefir and kimchi. However, you must be sure they contain ‘live’ cultures!

Sauerkraut is an excellent choice for re-introducing good bacteria to the gut

BEATING CANDIDA WITH DIET

!Candida is an opportunistic organism that feeds primarily on sugars. Give it

an inch and it will take a mile! So the first step in restoring a healthy bal-

ance to your body is to starve Candida of nutrition by removing its food

source while simultaneously cleansing the body.

As the yeast begins to die, it will release toxins. These toxins are responsible

for what are called “die-off” symptoms in the early part of treatment. These

may include nausea, headaches, skin rashes and many more. How intense

these are depends on how severe your Candida overgrowth is, and how

quickly you deprive the organism of its food source.

!!Vitaana Health CandidaGo Supplement will help speed up the cleansing

process, restore a healthy yeast balance and strengthen immunity. Howev-

er, it cannot eliminate the organism on its own. For complete benefit, it is

essential to make some changes in your diet and lifestyle.

THE ANTI-CANDIDA DIET

!There is no definitive anti-candida diet. Thus you will find numerous varia-

tions of diet recommended by health experts and nutritionists. For example,

some suggest eating small amounts of plain yogurt, while others argue for

cutting it out. Other disputes relate to the place of grains – are all grains

acceptable, or only whole grains and brown rice?

For our part, we encourage you to be strict about conforming to the recom-

mended diet, especially in the initial stages of treatment. The severity of

your yeast infection influences how rigorously you need to follow the diet,

and for how long - which can vary from a few weeks to several months and

even longer in some cases.

Having said that, we consider it perfectly acceptable to introduce the anti-

Candida diet step by step. This will allow your digestive system to adjust to

the new regime, as well as help reduce the severity of die-off symptoms.

Your CandidaGo supplement includes carefully selected enzymes to help de-

crease the intensity of the die-off. However, it contributes to starving out the

yeast, so you may still experience some symptoms. We recommend starting

off with the supplement slowly to further reduce the unpleasant symptoms

of Candida elimination.

As the Candida comes under control, you will be able to start re-introducing

some foods one by one. However, it is important to monitor your reactions

as you re-introduce these foods. If there is any sign of a flare-up, you will

have to cut them out promptly.

So much for starving out the fungus. Another important step which is also

often necessary is modifying the diet so as to avoid foods which induce al-

lergies, a common symptom in Candida sufferers.

The Candida Manual

Always keep in mind - if in doubt, don’t eat it!

Let’s start with the foods that are to be completely weeded out in the first

stage of your Candida treatment plan.

!Foods to Avoid

To make it easier to remember, we’ve grouped the foods to avoid into five

classes:

1. Sugar in any form, including fruit, and all food products containing sugar.

2. Refined grains

3. Yeast and all food products which contain yeast

4. Stimulants and alcohol

5. Dairy products

Foods To Avoid:

FOOD CATEGORY FOODS TO AVOID NOTES

SUGARS Sugar Honey Syrup Chocolate Molasses Rice syrup Artificial sweeteners Agave syrup Candy Cakes All sodas, even diet sodas

Check all labels for hidden sugars. Even frozen vegetables or canned foods will often have sugar added. Artificial sweeteners may weaken the immune system and leave you more vulnerable to Candida.

ALCOHOL Beer Champagne Cider Fortified wines Spirits Wine

Alcohol is high in sugar and weakens the immune system.

GRAINS & GLUTINOUS FOODS

All cereals Baked goods Barley Corn and corn byproducts Oats Pasta Rice Rye Spelt Wheat

Glutinous grains are an excellent food source for Candida because they have a high glycemic index, just as sugar does. Gluten is a protein that is difficult to digest, may interfere with mineral absorption and may cause intestinal damage. Molds found in corn and wheat may suppress normal immune function.

FRUIT Canned fruit Dried fruit Fresh fruit Frozen fruit Fruit juice

Lemons and limes are acceptable.

VEGETABLES Beetroot Carrots Parsnips Peas Potatoes Sweet Potatoes Yams

Avoid all starchy vegetables in the beginning. As you get your infection under control some of them can be added back slowly.

MEATS All cured meats Pork and pork products Processed meats Smoked meats

Cured meats usually contain additives, preservatives and sugars. Pork often contains contaminants that can survive cooking and could be harmful to anyone with a weakened digestive system.

FISH Shellfish All fish, except for wild salmon and sardines

Most shellfish and fish contain high levels of toxins that can suppress the immune system.

DAIRY PRODUCTS Buttermilk Cheese Cream Milk Whey Products

Lactose is a form of sugar, and should be avoided. Plain probiotic yogurt, kefir, ghee and butter are better, but eat in moderation. Cheeses made from goat and sheep milk may be tolerated once the Candida is under control.

ADDITIVES & PERSERVATIVES

Citric acid All additives and preservatives

Citric acid, unless naturally derived, comes from yeast and should be avoided. Additives and preservatives can disrupt your bacterial balance.

BEVERAGES Black tea Diet and regular soda Green tea Energy drinks Fruit juices

Caffeine can impair your immune system and cause your blood sugar to rise. Coffee may also con-tain mold.

NUTS Cashews Peanuts Pistachios

These contain high levels of mold which can exacerbate candida overgrowth.

BEANS & LEGUMES All types of beans Chickpeas Legumes GMO soy All soy products Tofu

Beans & legumes are difficult to digest & high in carbohydrates and should therefore be eliminated in the beginning, but can be selectively re-introduced later on. Most soy is GMO, but if you can find non-GMO soy, you can include it.

MUSHROOMS & MOLDS Mushrooms Truffles

Mushrooms can cause an inflammatory reaction in Candida sufferers, although some have medicinal properties, such as Reishi and Maitake mushrooms.

CONDIMENTS & SAUCES All condiments, including Horseradish Ketchup Mayonnaise Mustard Relish Salad Dressings Soy Sauce Sweet Chilly Sauce Worcestershire Sauce

Most condiments and sauces contain added sugars, not to mention other additives and preservatives and should be avoided. Use herbs and spices instead and olive oil and lemon as a salad dressing.

VINEGAR All vinegars except for raw apple cider vinegar

Raw apple cider vinegar is rich in enzymes that will help support the digestive system

!!!Keep It Simple !We know that implementing this kind of change in your diet is a drastic step. That’s why we recommend that you take it slow. Eliminate the offending food categories one by one, so that your taste buds and appetite centers have a chance to adjust.

It’s quite simple, really. Our aim is to have you eat simple meals composed primarily of fresh, unprocessed protein, such as meat, some fish and veg-etables of the fleshy and green leafy varieties. Your digestive system needs a rest, so, especially in the beginning...

Experiment with herbs and spices as flavoring agents instead of ready-made condiments. Add a festive touch to your food – look, aroma and savor! Most ancient cultures use natural spices and herbs without any loss of taste or food appeal!

Remember, you will be able to re-introduce some of the ‘banned’ foods in moderation, once your digestive balance has been restored. How long this takes will depend both on the extent of Candida overgrowth and how well you stick to the anti-candida diet.

FATS & OILS Canola oil Corn oil Peanut oil Soy oil

These oils are often contaminated with molds and/or are derived from GMO crops.

Many people report feeling much better after a couple of weeks on the anti-Candida diet. You can too! However, it is also important to realize that this doesn’t imply complete healing has occurred. The full process may take longer, which means you will be on this diet program from several months to years.

!Foods You CAN Eat Let’s get to the interesting part - what you CAN eat!

Broadly speaking, foods in any of the following groups are open to you:

1. Vegetables

2. Protein

3. Whole grains

!Foods You Can Eat

FOOD CATEGORY FOODS TO EAT NOTES

SWEETENERS Stevia Xytol Coconut Sugar

These have a lower glycemic index and there-fore make less impact on your blood sugar levels.

FATS & OILS Virgin coconut oil Olive oil Sesame oil Flax oil Red palm oil Almond oil Grapeseed oil

Use cold pressed oils where possible. Coconut oil can safely be used at higher temperatures.

PROTEIN - Meat, Fish & Eggs

Eggs Beef Lamb Chicken Turkey Wild salmon Sardines Herring Anchovies

Try to buy only fresh and organic meat, poultry and eggs. Failing that, make sure the meat is hor-mone- and antibiotic-free. !Avoid processed meats in particular, as these are often loaded with sugars and preservatives. !Many fish contain ocean contaminants. The rec-ommended fish contain fewer contaminants than most.

DAIRY Ghee Kefir Probiotic yogurt with live enzyme cultures - plain with no added sugar

Live yogurt and kefir help re-populate the digestive system with healthy bac-teria. However, since many Candida sufferers are lac-tose-intolerant, we rec-ommend using these with caution, especially in the early stages.

VEGETABLES Asparagus Artichoke Avocado Bok choy Bamboo shoots Broccoli Brussels sprouts Cabbage Cauliflower Celery Celeriac (celery root) Cucumber Eggplant Fennel Garlic Green and wax beans Green bell peppers Kale Leeks Lettuce Olives Onions Greens (spinach, chard , collards, mustard greens)

Non-starchy vegetables help starve the Candida of the sugars it feeds on. !Buy organic vegetables if possible, and fresh in any case. !Eat them raw, lightly steamed or grilled. Make a bowl of salad or some raw vegetables part of your daily routine. !Avocados, although they are technically a fruit and do contain sugar, can help stabilize blood sugar levels and are a good source of healthful and satiating fat. !Olives are acceptable as long as they have not been marinated in white vinegar.

FERMENTED FOODS Apple cider vinegar Kefir Sauerkraut Any fermented vegeta-bles

Apple cider vinegar helps balance the body’s pH levels and aids digestion. !Sauerkraut and other fermented vegetables contain beneficial bacte-ria that will help fight Candida. Make your own, as shop-bought va-rieties are often lacking in live cultures.

BREADS Sourdough bread Try to eliminate bread al-together, especially in the early stages of the diet, as its refined flour pro-vides food for Candida. !If you just have to eat bread, go for a sour-dough or other bread that has no added yeast.

NON-GLUTINOUS GRAINS

Amaranth Buckwheat Millet Oat Bran Quinoa

These grains have a high fiber content. They are therefore excellent at keeping your digestive system moving, and will help eliminate toxins. !Most products made from these ingredients are acceptable, such as quinoa crackers.

!!!Candida Fighting Foods

You’ve made it through the foods to avoid and the “good foods” which help

starve the Candida of its food supply. Now, let’s take a look at some wonder

foods that help actively help fight the Candida. These should be incorporat-

1. Coconut Oil

!!Coconut oil is known for its potent antifungal properties. It contains lauric

acid and caprylic acid, both of which help prevent Candida overgrowth and

strengthen the immune system. It is also very heat stable, making it an

ideal choice for frying, sautéing and cooking.

2. Garlic

Garlic boasts powerful antifungal properties to eliminate Candida. It also

stimulates the liver and colon, helping with digestion, and detoxifying the

body by aiding the elimination of the toxins released as the Candida dies off.

3. Onions

Onions are rich in compounds which give them their characteristic smell but

also confer powerful antifungal, anti-parasitic, and anti-bacterial properties.

They are powerful allies in your body’s fight against Candida. In addition,

they help flush excess fluids from the body. Since Candida sufferers often

suffer from water retention, this is a boon.

And here’s a little tip if you are concerned about garlic or onion causing

breath issues. Eat a little parsley with the garlic to help neutralize the smell.

4. Seaweed

Seaweed is a nutrient-dense and healing food that will help flush toxic pollu-

tants and heavy metals from the body and help cleanse your intestinal tract.

5. Rutabaga

Rutabaga has powerful antifungal properties. Although it seems to be a

starchy vegetable, which should therefore be avoided on the anti-candida

diet, rutabaga will in fact help in the fight against Candida.

6. Ginger

Ginger will help detoxify the body by stimulating circulation, which means

increased rate of flushing out wastes. It also detoxifies the liver and acti-

vates the immune system. It promotes gas elimination from the digestive

system and may soothe inflammation in the intestinal tract.

7. Olive Oil

Olive oil contains powerful antifungal properties and stimulates your immune

system response to Candida. It may also help stabilize blood sugar levels.

This cuts down on the sugar available to feed the Candida.

8. Lemon and Lime Juice

Lemon and lime juice can help increase the efficiency of your digestive sys-

tem. Both lemons and limes are wonderfully piquant seasonings for veg-

etable, fish and meat dishes. They are also an excellent alternative to vine-

gar in salad dressings. A big glass of hot water with a squeeze of lemon

juice first thing in the morning is a great way to start the day.

9. Pumpkin Seeds

Pumpkin seeds are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which promote normal im-

mune function and reduce inflammation. Thus they have antifungal, anti-vi-

ral and anti-parasitic properties. Omega-3 fatty acids also play a crucial role

in maintaining optimum thyroid health. Many people don’t ingest enough

omega-3s in their diet.

Add pumpkin seeds, especially roasted, to salads, cereals, smoothies or oth-

er nuts and seeds to create a delicious omega-3 rich snack.

10. Cayenne Pepper

Cayenne pepper stimulates digestion and immune function. It also reduces

constipation while helping to cleanse the bowel of Candida and other toxins.

It is great at boosting overall metabolism and circulation in the body. This is

extremely useful in combating one of the most common symptoms of Can-

dida, namely, chronic fatigue.

MAKING LIFESTYLE CHANGES

If you’ve come this far, you know overcoming Candida is a long term process. Making such fundamental changes to your diet may seem impossi-ble. However, let us assure you that you can make the transition successfully and with minimum trauma by just taking small steps.

!!!You will also want to look at how your lifestyle is encouraging Candida to flourish in your body, so you can make appropriate changes. Don’t be dis-couraged! Just one small change at a time will add up to tremendous im-provement in your health, fitness and freedom from Candida symptoms over the long term.

It’s not very hard to build your resistance to Candida and fully eliminate the infection, as you are about to see. Just make sure you have:

• Plenty of restful sleep

At least 6 hours of quiet sleep at night do wonders in building up your immunity. Set a regular bedtime, wind down physical and men-tal activity half an hour before it’s time to sleep and don’t drink too much water in the couple of hours just before bedtime.

!• Quit smoking

Smoking has been known for years to be a prime culprit in weaken-ing immune function so as to allow opportunity-seeking organisms like Candida to overgrow. Get support from family, friends or other support groups, learn better methods to relax and take up exercise instead!

• Healthy exercise

Exercise – it will rejuvenate your weakened health, boost your im-munity, improve your sleep, relieve stress and let you feel and look much younger and healthier. Tuck in a few stretches, jogging in place, brisk walks up and down stairs or to work, to get exercise throughout the day – or join a group to make new friends and get the support you deserve and enjoy!

• Reduced stress

There are many excellent ways to reduce stress, like relaxing with friends (but not drinking or smoking)! Or taking a 15-minute break to meditate quietly on the blessings you enjoy now, or have good memories of in the past, brings real change to your feelings and your stress levels. The real winner is spending a little time and ener-gy to help another person in trouble. Reduced stress always means better immunity and health! More on this later.

Are you still feeling intimidated by the number of changes you are being asked to make? Let’s make it simple, then.

Tips for Adjusting To Your Lifestyle Changes:

1. One Step at a Time

Never try to make all these changes at once.

One step at a time is all we can handle successfully. If you try to perform an extreme makeover on your entire lifestyle, you run a great risk of being overwhelmed and giving up before a single change has a chance to take root.

But anyone can make just one change. Why not start off by eliminating sug-ar from your diet?

2. Reward Yourself

You need both inner and outer rewards to make such sweeping changes with any success. At the very outset, a great motivator is visualizing how good it will feel to be healthy, Candida-free and energetic – forever! Keep reminding yourself of that picture, of you enjoying things you love without feeling foggy, tired or itchy.

Secondly, keep yourself motivated by rewarding your successes. For instance, most people find it extremely difficult to eliminate sugar from their diet. The key here is to replace the high you get from sugar with something you love even more!

How about a trip, or treating yourself to a long-wished for spa visit or mani-cure with the money you saved on sugar and candy? Maybe you would just like to take an extra day off and go to the beach, or visit an old friend.

By finding creative ways to celebrate your achievements, you will find that overcoming Candida is much easier than you think!

!!You may wonder what stress control has to do with Candida con-trol. The fact is that when you are feeling stressed, you are more likely to return to your bad habits, such as reaching for sugary snacks.

On the other hand, reducing stress will not only assist in beating Candida, it will also translate into other health benefits.

It’s easier than you think to reduce stress in your life:

• Spend some time examining your life to determine the major causes of your stress. Then you can work out how to reduce those stress levels.

• Exercise on a regular basis – this helps both your body and your mind to tone up and relax.

• Treat yourself to something special … you deserve it

• Take joy in being outside in the fresh air and sun

• Try quiet meditation on a regular basis to put your problems into per-spective.

• Get enough sleep - lack of sleep puts stress on your body

• Eat a healthy diet – the anti-candida diet

!4. Remove Temptations

It is important to support changes in your lifestyle by removing the things you need to avoid from your home and your life. It will ease the transition immensely when temptations are out of reach!

For instance, if you decide to cut out sugar, make it easy on yourself by making your home a sugar-free zone! You can also also stop visiting the baked goods section while shopping – or switch to a health foods store which doesn’t carry refined sugars or sugar-rich processed foods.

If you are giving up alcohol or quitting smoking, don’t hang out with friends who use these substances. If you are attempting to get more sleep, remove the TV from your bedroom at least until you’ve established a regular bed-time. Make your surroundings pleasant and supportive of your new lifestyle.

!5. Build a Support Network

Getting support from friends and family is crucial to successfully carrying out major changes for most of us.

Be open and honest with your family and friends. Tell them your plans, and the changes you intend to make.

You don’t even have to mention dealing with Candida if you don’t want to. All they need to understand is that you have discarded the use of sugar, drinking, smoking or whatever. Your friends and family can be a huge source of support and they can help you stay on track.
