in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot receive You sacramentally, come spiritually into my heart. I embrace You and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

End Racism

We pray for all who are in prisons and jails. “I was in prison and you visited me.” (Matthew 25:36)

As we continue our parish-wide journey through Open Wide Our Hearts, this week we reflect on the background article about Racism and the Criminal Justice System. See link below: https://www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/human-life-and-dignity/racism/upload/racism-and-criminal-justice.pdf

Has your heart been opened? St. Joseph’s Prison Ministry brings the light, love and friendship of Jesus Christ into the lives of incarcerated people and their families. They learn they are forgiven, and they learn they are loved. It is truly a life-changing, and often life-saving, experience. Learn more about these ministries by contacting John Brodarick at [email protected] for the men’s Prison Ministry and Crystal Sullivan at crystalnkevin@ comcast.net for the women’s Prison Ministry.

St. Joseph’s food pantry, Libertyville now open Sundays

Now open 5 days a week including Sunday, St. Joseph’s food pantry is coming into its busiest time of year. Sundays opening is all thanks to the parish Youth Ministry stepping up its game to help people in need. The Youth Ministry is led by Brigid and Tom Dutton who say when they asked the youth for their help, the response was enormous and the youth volunteer slots through December were filled instantly.

St. Joseph’s food pantry, is one of very few supermarket style food pantries in Lake County. Its aim is to serve people who need food and due to circumstances, cannot afford to pay for it. Clients peruse aisles of food in order to select their groceries, which have generously been donated by St. Joseph’s parishioners and the local community and businesses.

Because of trying times, especially with the current pandemic, St. Joseph’s food pantry has been getting extremely busy this past year serving hundreds of clients weekly.

St. Joseph’s food pantry is located at 112 N. Milwaukee Ave, Libertyville. Open Mondays and Thursdays, 11am-1pm, Wednesdays and Fridays, 4pm-6pm and now Sundays, 10am-12pm.

Donations to the food pantry can be made by dropping off non-perishable food in the bins outside St. Joseph’s church or by delivering all food items to St. Joseph’s food pantry one hour prior to each opening. Personal Care items are also very much appreciated by the clients.

Large donations can be coordinated with Dennis Moffitt, 847-331-4914

Further information can be found at https://stjoseph-libertyville.org/food-pantry

To keep up to date with needed items or events related to the food pantry, you can also like St. Joseph’s food pantry page on Facebook.

St. Joseph’s food pantry would like to thank everybody who has donated items or money to help with this mission. Also, sincere gratitude is extended to all the volunteers who make this mission possible.

Pregnant women and struggling families with young children require assistance with their mate-rial and spiritual needs, regardless of their back-

ground. For low-income Hispanic women, this is espe-cially true, because linguistic and cultural differences pose unique challenges for pregnancy volunteers and pastoral ministers.

In the Dioceses of Yakima and Spokane in central and eastern Washington, for example, your generos-ity to the Catholic Campaign for Human Development helps a group called PREPARES en español to minister to large and vibrant Hispanic communities. By training Spanish-speaking and bilingual volunteers and coordina-tors, and through developing Spanish-language materials, PREPARES en español offers support groups, family com-panions, and parent/child learning and playgroups that

not only assist vulnerable families but do so in a con-text of respect for the unique cultural needs of Hispanic families. With your contri-butions, Spanish-speaking families are strengthened and nourished at the parish level in these dioceses.

Prayer to Our Lady of Guadalupe

for Justice

Most merciful mother, you came to tell us of your compassion through St. Juan Diego, whom you called the littlest and

dearest of your sons. Give your strength and pro-tection to all who live in poverty today, especially the young, elderly, and vulnerable. Plead for them to the Father, that they might experience the Divine Love tangibly in their daily lives, and that all who work for justice on behalf of the poor might grow in fortitude and humility. In these ways, manifest your charity and concern in our lives, that the weeping of humanity may be heard, and all our suffering, pain, and misfortune may be filled with divine comfort and healing. May we always know the peace of being in the cradle of your arms, and bring us safely home to your son, Jesus. Amen.

Green Tip: Excerpts from Pope Francis’ Encyclical Laudato SíTechnological progress is not identicalwith human progress. There is a growing awareness that scientific and technological progress cannot be equated with the progress of humanity and history, a growing sense that the way to a better future lies elsewhere. This is not to reject the possibilities which technology continues to offer us. […] Let us refuse to resign ourselves to this, and continue to wonder about the purpose and meaning

of everything. Otherwise we would simply legiti-mize the present situation and need new forms of escapism to help us endure the emptiness. […]Nobody is suggesting a return to the Stone Age, but we do need to slow down and look at reality in a different way, to appropriate the positive and sustainable progress which has been made, but

also to recover the values and the great goals swept away by our unrestrained delusions of grandeur. (113-114)

Spirituality@Work—Job loss and the challenge of finding new employment is one of the most difficult transitions many of us will face. During these times of high stress, as we navigate this pandemic, we have an extra need to find and draw strength from our rela-tionships with others and God to restore our spiritual strength. To help us with this challenge, Deacon Dan Coughlin will present Spirituality@Work at our next meeting. Dan will describe his career journey, with its ups and downs, and share his insights and learnings, along with his approach to making spirituality and trust in God an essential tool in dealing with career and life challenges. Dan will explore the spiritual gifts of the Holy Spirit and how they can enhance our attitude and confidence throughout the job search. His observations will hopefully help you develop a healthier perspective on your own employment situation. Our sessions are free, and all are welcome. Please preregister at the Zoom link below:

——––––—–—–—————–Prayer & WorshipOur Observance of All Souls’ Day St. Joseph Catholic Church celebrated All Souls’ Day on No-

vember 2. The Mass was livestreamed and attended in-person by parishioners, who carried candles and prayed for the souls of their loved ones. All Souls’ Day, also called the Commemoration of All the Faith-ful Departed and the Day of the Dead, is a day of prayer and recog-nition for the souls of those who have died. It is celebrated by Catho-lics and other Christian denominations every year on November 2.

Deacon Dan Coughlin gave the homily, and he did “some-thing that isn’t normally done” at the beginning of it by quoting a Disney song. Families prayed and listened as the names of those who died this past year were read. Participants were grateful for the guidance and comfort of our faith and the opportunity to remember those who they love and cherish.

New Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion (EOM’s) Practicum Training on Wednesday Are you called to minister Holy Communion to your brothers and sisters in Christ? There are two requirements for everyone who is an EOM in the Archdiocese of Chicago: 1) Theology of Ministry and of the Mass training sponsored by the Archdiocese and 2) practical training for the norms at your specific parish. We will be offering a practicum training for all interested in becoming Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EOM’s) on Wednesday, November 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the church. This training will fulfill the second half of the requirement established by the Archdiocese. At this time, the Archdiocese has suspended the theological training sessions due to COVID-19. Anyone who successfully completes the training on November 18 may begin serving in ministry at St. Joseph Catholic Church with the understanding that the theological training must be completed once it is offered again by the Archdiocese in Vicariate I. Due to safety regulations, we will not be able to accept walk-ins. If you have any questions, please contact Jennifer Kolber at [email protected]. Vocations Essay Contest Winners!Editor’s Note: Congratulations to our St. Joseph Vocations Ministry’s God’s Call is for All essay contest winners! The authors shared the people who inspire them in following Christ each day. Both students will be sent a $25 gift card to Culver’s for their efforts. Here are their essays: The person(s) that inspire me is my Mom and Dad. My mom takes care of me and my brother and sister, and my Dad works for Caterpillar in Deerfield, Illinois. The impact they have made on my life is big. They feed me; they get me up for school every morning they pay for me to even attend school. They make a big impact on this world because they donate to char-ity a lot and they help with the food pantry. They show their faith and values. They are loving, caring and helpful. Their faith shows as they go to church with us every Sunday to pray and worship Jesus and God. My mom and dad inspire me to be whatever I want to be, which is a basketball player. My dad and mom help me practice basketball in my driveway and sign me up for camps, like Kessel, and a basketball team that has skills and a league. By Cameron Epley, Grade 5, Mrs. Kaminski’s class, St. Joseph School Parents: Kyle and Kelly Epley

A person who inspires me to be closer to God is my Grandma. She is friendly and kind towards everyone, just like God wants all of us to be. She goes to church every Sunday (with the exception of COVID-19 times) and prays passionately about her loved ones, including my grandpa, (who recently passed away) who she hopes to see in heaven one day. She befriends a lot of people, including deacons and priests who recognize her from her common attendance and greet her. She finds ways to be closer to God by praying, and tries to make prayers towards all who need help that she knows. She prays the rosary, prays before dinner, prays for my family and (me), and I wish I could pray like that. I love how she is righteous and how she wants to help us in any way she can. Her love also inspires me and her support for anything I do. Her determination to go out and be even closer than she was before to God is so inspirational to me. That is how and why she inspires me to be closer to God. By River J. Thompson, Grade 8, Mr. and Mrs. Harding’s Peer Group St. Joseph Children’s Faith Formation Parents: Jerry and Michelle Thompson

Thoughts on Giving “Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since you have been faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities.” (Matthew 25:21) God calls us to nurture and develop the gifts He has given us and then generously return a portion with increase. He expects us to grow our gifts, use them wisely and be generous with them.

Breaking Open the WordA Journey to Discipleship–Jesus Companions Us Through Scripture

1. Proclaim God’s Word. Choose someone to read the Scripture. After reading, there is silence from the group in reverence.2. Invite Response. Invite individuals to respond to a word, phrase or passage that strikes them in some way.3. Praise God. After a period of response, close by leading the group in praise of God by praying together the Glory Be.

Next Sunday’s Gospel — Matthew 25:31-46Leader: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew Response: Glory to You, O Lord

Reflection Next Sunday, we conclude another liturgical year in the life of the Church by celebrating the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. Each Church year begins with Advent, when we prepare to celebrate the gift of Jesus as He comes humbly as an infant in the poorest of surroundings on Christmas Day. The image of the King of the Universe is a fitting bookend to that humble beginning, for we are reminded that despite being the all-powerful Son of God, Jesus is a King totally fo-cused on loving, protecting and saving all people who seek to enter into His Kingdom. While we celebrate the Kingship of Christ, it is equally important for us to contemplate Him as our own personal King. How are we acting as loyal subjects? Do we go about our day in ways that bring us a greater desire to serve Him and offer our assistance in building up His Kingdom? Do we place our trust in the King to keep us strong and healthy, seeing to our needs and our security against the ravages of those who seek to destroy us and the Kingdom? It is clear that the Jewish people of Christ’s time and even many of His followers did not understand His Kingship as He hung dying on the cross. How well do we understand the loving goodness and greatness of our King when we gaze upon the crucifix? All of our reflections this past year have reminded us that we, His subjects, are made in the image of the Father. We are loved and lovable. We are called to become His disciples and loyal subjects by listening to His teaching, following His example and sharing all we have with those in need. Jesus reminds us that His kingdom is for all people and it is for each of us. As His loyal subjects we should desire to serve Him on this earth by serving those most in need of His love and mercy. We are encouraged to know Christ not as a distant King who has left us without protection as He sits on His heavenly throne, but as a King who lives among the Body of Christ, His holy Church, showering us with the graces of the Sacraments as He guides and sustains us on our journey to eternal life.Reflection Questions 1. How have I honored and glorified Jesus as King of the Universe and of my soul during the last liturgical year? What has been most helpful? How have I drifted away? What has gotten in the way of my spiritual growth?2. Our King has left us His Church as the castle walls of the Kingdom to carry on the redemptive mission of Jesus the King. How has my commitment to the Catholic faith grown or waned in this past year? What has helped to strengthen it? What keeps me from more active involvement in my parish and the practice of my faith?3. What have I done to build up the Kingdom and care for its people this past year? What might I do next year?

For further reflection on the second coming of Christ see The Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraphs 668-682; and on the works of mercy, paragraphs 2443-2463.

Readings for the Week

Jesus said to his disciples: “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit upon his glorious throne, and all the nations will be assembled before him. And he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will place the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. “Then the king will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.’ “Then the righteous will answer him and say, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? When did we see you ill or in prison, and

visit you?’ And the king will say to them in reply, ‘Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of the least brothers of mine, you did for me.’ “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, a stranger and you gave me no welcome, naked and you gave me no clothing, ill and in prison, and you did not care for me.’ “Then they will answer and say, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or ill or in prison, and not minister to your needs?’ He will answer them, ‘Amen, I say to you, what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me.’ And these will go off to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
